There are exceptions to every rule, but I don't think most viewers in the 80s tuned in for the stories. They watched for the characters and actors and the chemistry that they had with one another. These actors were able to rise above the "cartoon" plots and make them interesting. |

The characters were larger than life and had some cheesiness to them sometimes too. I don't see why people can except that but not the plots. |

Personally, I like my soap characters larger than life. I even like dialogue, particuarly romantic dialogue, that you wouldn't hear anywhere else but on a soap or in a novel. If that's cheesiness than please pass the cheese! |

But it takes away from the OP's arguement that people didn't care about the plots because they could be cheesy, well so could the characters. |

I don't analyze why I like the 80s the best. I don't know. I just did. I absolutely loved it. Sure, I thought the 90s was better in some ways but I wasn't glued to it like I was the 80s. I think it was the characters. They were mesmerizing. And the supercouples were out of this world. I loved the adventure, love and romance. The 90s had too much misery. |

No couple was as miserable as JaSam. Their whole getting together was one huge weepfest over Sam's dead baby. |

I get Jasam has a lot of fans but to me, SBu and KeMo hardly have any chemistry. That's another big difference between the couples of the 80s and the 2000s. Chemistry was very important in the 80s. |

I loved GH in the late 80s. I couldn't even concentrate in school/college because of my LOVE for the characters of Robert, Anna, Duke, Sean, Frisco, Felicia etc etc. 1988/89/90/91/92 were especially memorable years for me. I totally disagree that the 90s were better. I don't agree with that at all. |

I just find it funny that fans of JaSam that never watched 90's GH complained it to be too miserable. Please, nothing could ever be as miserable as JaSam. |

I don't know why this era is considered the best.
