I always thought it was sad how sidelined Jessie became in the 80s. Emily McLaughlin was still in her 40s when she got pushed to the side. She was years younger than Maurice Benard is now.
what? for real? EM was only in her 40's in the 80's, not to be harsh but i thought she was in her late 50's then.. ;startle
She was 47 or 48 when Gloria and Doug came on.
They could have utilized history better and done Lee/Jessie instead of bringing on newbie Gail, who was only brought on because she was a pet of Monty's from A Bright Promise.

Quoting limited to 4 levels deep
I didn't think it was that deep for you to go look it up, but ok.
I think we should have conversations about what actually happened, not or emotional tantrum versions.

If a convo about how much the vets are on comes up shouldn't we attempt to deal with reality, not thumbsucking fantasy?
not really ..i't's not that important.
well NOP but I'd skip conversation with anyone who thinks I'm having an emotional tantrum.

Take a look at how many vets were left on GH, and their episode counts, by the time Gloria was finished changing the show:

FLASHBACK: 1988 Episode Counts

Hello all – for some fun and nostalgia here are the episode counts for 1988, compiled through viewings. This was the year Anna was captured by Grant Putnam and lost her baby with Duke; Sean and Tiffany were married; Duke infiltrated the Jerome mob and was pursued by an obsessed Olivia; Julian faked his death for the first time; Tom and Simone had daytime’s first interracial marriage; Tony and Lucy divorced; Monica had an affair with Ned; and Felicia searched for Frisco’s killer.

This was the year we were introduced to Julian and Olivia Jerome, Colton Shore, Lord Larry and Lady Arielle Ashton, Harrison Davis, and Katherine Delafield; and the year GH lost Jake Meyer, Patrick O’Connor, Grant Putnam, and Filomena Soltini.

Hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane as much as I did!! I hope to have 1989 finished before the end of the year.

General Hospital
Number of Episodes in 1988: 257

9. Kin Shriner (Scott Baldwin) – 132
20. John Beradino (Dr. Steve Hardy) – 88
31.Rachel Ames (Audrey Hardy) – 57
37. Emily McLaughlin (Jessie Brewer) – 37

For me, killing off Duke gives me one reason not to watch this show. Yes, Cartini have brought back the vets but there's no substance to them and there are a million newbies (and other former soap stars) that eat up my show. I can't invest in any of them because they're not on enough. Except Sonny. Again. And Jason and Carly. We seem to never truly get a break from them.

I thought under a new regime, things would be different. Geary and Benard wouldn't be catered to as much. But things are still the same. And while FV and RC didn't butcher our vets like Guza did, they didn't do much better with them.

I guess I'm just over this show. I'm scared to watch what they're doing with Luke. He's not the same character I grew to love. But as long as Geary is happy, right? Forget about the fans.

Bye, bye GH!

The actors playing Lee and Gail left in the mid 80's and didn't come back until Wendy Richie produced.

Were they fired by Gloria?

I didn't understand why Monty was so ruthless with eliminating the GHers that predated her. By the time she left only Jessie, Steve and Audrey remained. She kept marginalizing the characters long after the show was saved, so it just made no sense.

It's not like she was ageist either. She had her writers create new, aged characters like Dan, Edward, Lila, Gail, and Ruby, who all went on to be treated like vets, even though they were just very aged newbies.

I get that EM had health issues later on but did she really could have utilized Steve and Audrey soooo much more than she did, Lee too. There was also no reason not to keep Peter and Diane around.
