Good Evening Senators, If it is fine with everyone else, I would like to set some basic Senate Ground rules, mainly Parlimentary Procedure. The first thing that you should type is "Thank you Mr. President, Through you to the Members" That is removing the personal factor out of the post, and signifies you are speaking through the Senate President. Next, You must state the reason you "rise" Example " Thank you Mr. President, Through you to the Members. I rise today in strong favor of the current issue up for debate because......" This is just another formality, and a good way to start, to ease confusion. Thirdly, When addressing another senator in debate refer to them as " The Gentleman from XXXXX" or the " Gentlewoman from XXXX" Another formality. The word "You" should never be used, instead, use the above, OR "A previous Senator stated" Another formality and way of removing the personal factor. Profanities are not to be used. Please refrain from "text message slang" If any of the above rules are broken, I, or the Senate President Pro Tempore (Senator who is Second in the Senate and is proceeding over the senate in the Senate President's absence) will call you "Out of Order" And your post may or may not be deleted. It can however be re-posted in the correct format. Thanks all! |

While I appreciate formality in debate, I feel as if they may be going over the top. I think the most important thing when debating on the forums is respect for the opinions of your fellow senators; the other formalities may serve as distractions and even discourage other senators from getting involved. |

These formalities are used i Every legislative Body in the USA. They allow people to only focus on the issues, not their reputations. |
