For all she tried to act older and more mature than her years, there were parts of Talitha Malfoy that would forever be more like a little girl. She loved ponies. She painted her toes bright colors, and she didn't see anything wrong with giggling. And Talitha Malfoy loved - loved - surprises.

So when her brother had told her that he had a big surprise for her, Talitha had lost herself in excited wondering as to what he could possibly have in store for her. Had he bought her something? That had to be it--what else could it be? She'd tired her sister and even her friends out with her wondering, so that by her last class she had to wonder in secret, doodling pictures of beautiful gowns and a new horse on the edges of the parchment on which she was supposed to be copying notes from the blackboard on.

When the class was finished, Tali hurriedly stuffed her books into her bag and left the classroom, before anyone else had had the chance to finish standing. She walked just as fast as grace and propriety would allow, the hem of her plaid skirt swishing around her thighs once she pulled off her robes and stuffed them into the bag that hung across her body as well.

He'd told her to meet in the west courtyard, the one closest the far-off owlery, and Talitha's mind had not yet been able to come up with a reason as to why he would ask her to meet him there. She hurried down the long, skinny stone corridor with it's tall pillars on either side, spotting Draco's back long before she was within hearing range of him.

When she stepped into the courtyard, she spoke up. "Draco!" she said as she moved toward him. "I hope your day went well?" she asked, of course not going to be the one to jump into the conversation she was so dying to begin.

Draco knew how much his sisters loved surprises and presents. It was one of his favorite things to do as their older brother. Between his own allowances and the money his father would give him if he told him it was to buy the girls something, Draco could have bought them several small countries. Hmmmm, maybe for Christmas. Right now he had other plans, this one specifically for Talitha. Once his sisters got older, he definately made sure to give them things seperately, to show he valued each of them is individuals and didn't lump them together. He knew that was something that bothered them both, when their classmates or professors did that.

Today was Talitha's turn. He had bought her several very interesting items and had told her to meet him here after the last classes. He smirked, knowing how hard it must have been for her to suffer through all of her classes and not know what he had for her. He had told her at breakfast that morning, in passing so she couldn't ask him to clarify or bug him to give it to her now. Draco knew how his sisters were. He had a surprise for Sinstra too, but that would wait for another day.

He had gotten out of his last class a few minutes early and so had plenty of time to set things up in the courtyard he had chosen. He had the boxes of her gifts with him, but hidden with magic until it was time for the great unveiling. Draco was sitting calmly on one of the stone benches, reading a book. He made himself relax and act as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on today. He looked up as he heard his sister's voice and gave her a warm smile. "Tali," he said, "my day has been fairly well. Only one long essay to write tonight. How were your classes?"

Like any siblings, Talitha and her brother had fought in their years together, but Tali held a special place in her heart for Draco. He was a caring brother, one who protected her and included her. And, sometimes, one who doted upon her with surprise presents.

With the way he spoiled her, it was easy to see why she didn't believe he was responsible for hurting the males around her who had gotten too friendly.

"My classes went well," she said as she moved over to the bench where her brother sat. She shrugged her cardigan off her shoulders, it gathering at her elbows and causing the sleeves to slip over her hands, just how she liked them. Sitting beside him, she elaborated on her answer. "Potions was brilliant--I made the draught turn almost the shade it was supposed to--but it was one of the closest in the class." Her pride in this was evident; school had never come easily to Talitha. She'd always had to work hard for decent grades.

"Arithmancy was horrible--we're learning new things, and I'm always so slow to learn in that class, and I always feel worse because father's the professor and, well, you know...I suppose I want to do superbly in his subject, because it's his." Just as her first bit of news had brought a smile to her face, this brought a bit of a frown. One of her shoes scuffed the stone beneath her feet, toes digging into the crack between stones through the front of her favorite black flats.

Suddenly, Talitha remembered something which caused her to sit up straight and whip her head around to her brother. "And by the way, if you hear a terrible rumor about me, I swear it's not true," she said haughtily. "I heard two girls in our own house talking about me, and I couldn't believe the things they were saying. And then a bunch of Hufflepuff boys in the Great Hall were catcalling--it was so embarassing!" she said, her voice of the verge of a soft wail. "As though I'd ever go all the way with a Gryffindor," she couldn't help but pout.

Draco smiled when his sister came over to join him. He closed his book and scooted over a few inches to give her room and so he could give her his full attention as she spoke. Potions was an easy subject for him, it always had been. It was a precise skill, needing attention to detail and a quick memory. He also didn't mind getting to use a knife to take out his aggression on some days. Like his sister, Arithmacy wasn't an easy subject. He could handle money numbers, investing and such. That side of his father's numbers gift he had inherited. But if you gave him math with magic in complex formulas, that's when when he started to get a headache. It made him want to throw the textook against the wall. He also suffered with pangs of wanting to do well in that class because his father taught and excelled in it. Lucius was always patient to explain the complexities of the subject to his son and Draco had no doubt that he was just as patient with his daughters, if not more so.

He opened his mouth to reassure her when she whirled to face him and blurted out her statement. Both of his eyebrows shot up in surprise. Excuse me? Who was saying what about his baby sister? Draco's eyes narrowed and his eyes darkened to a more stormy grey color. Oh, he was never going to get his project done for Transfigurations tonight now. Now, he had to go find these Gryffindors and whoever else started the rumor and teach them that such things are not acceptable to be said nor passed around the school. "I believe you, Tali," he said softly. "Tell me who the rumors say you've slept with and the girls who were talking about you." He gave her a soft smile and a one-arm hug. "I'll make sure they stop talking about you. Don't you worry."

(sorry its so short. *wrinkles nose*)

Talitha didn't realize that she was nervous as to how Draco would react until he reacted so kindly. His soft 'I believe you' and the use of her nickname made her relax, though she hadn't realized she had been worried. As he hugged her to him, she gladly melted against his side, biting her lip as she looked at the stones.

She loved having an older brother. They really didn't fight very much in her family, so she even had few complaints about him. In her eyes, Draco could do no wrong. Sure, he annoyed her every now and then, treating her like a baby or just plain being mean when in a bad mood, but overall, Draco was far more sweet than he let people see. This view of her brother, and the similar view of her father, as well as her Uncle Rod and other males in her family, had done a bit to undermine the ultimate authority of the males of the elite circle of the Emperor. She never treated them with anything but the utmost respect, of course--of course--but she had a feeling that all of them were pretending to be a lot harder than they actually were.

She didn't let him get away with a half-hearted hug, either. Maybe with anyone else, but not with her. She put her arms around him and linked her hands, resting her head against his shoulder. She let the silence go on, just long enough for him to notice her hesitance but not long enough to make him annoyed with her pause.

"They said I..." Her voice tremored as she said the words-- "slept wit...Rudy Pinsley. And I swear the rumors are completely unfounded, Draco," she continued, lifting her head to look at him beseechingly, "What I mean is, I haven't so much as winked at him. Let alone...anything more." She settled her head on his shoulder again as she continued.

"It was Moresa Roud and Jennifer Shadeouw who said it," she said, naming two girls both from families far below the Malfoys. "But everyone's probably heard it by now. Why does no one defend me? I thought I had some kind of sway over people here. But they all jump at the first chance to stab me in the back." Her finger played with a stray string at the cuff of Draco's shirt as she talked, pink lips pursing in displeasure.

He was both furious and highly amused. He was furious that someone would attack his sister so and even more angry that two of their housemates had been the ones to help circulate this rumor. Hadn't the boys learned by now how dangerous he was when his sisters were threatened in any way, shape or form? Apparently not, so he would have to teach the lesson again and would continue to teach it until they got it through their hormone soaked heads! On the other hand he was greatly amused at the innocence his sister's question brought up. She may be 15, but she was still sheltered by him and their father. It was time for some of that innocence to fall by the wayside and here seemed to be the perfect chance to do it without causing her a great deal of pain. Yes, she was hurt because of the rumor, but in the end it was only her ego that was bruised and that he knew very well how to fix. Actually the presents that he had brought her would do the trick just fine.

Draco wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed the top of her head. "Tali, I will always believe you, okay? Don't ever be afriad to tell me something. If I get upset its not at you. It would be at whoever hurt you or perhaps myself for not protecting you. Even if its something I warned you not to do, come tell me so I can fix it. You never need to hide things from me." He gave her a warm smile and stroked her hair.

"I'll deal with the boys and those two girls and I'll fix the rumors too. I already have a plan, so don't you worry about it a moment longer. Sadly, though, you're learning the downside of power, respect and fear. You see, if you haven't earned your power and respect, then people will resent you for it, especially if they don't have any. They'll be jealous. So, if they get a chance to take away your power, they will take it. Those girls are jealous that you are my sister and a daughter of a Great Lord and have friends in the highest of places, places they will never get to. How many times have you met the Emperor or talked to Nolian? He's over with me all the time. They can never really hope to get his attention. You demand respect because of your family name, because of me and Father and we gladly shared with you and Sin. But, technically it still our power, so its easily for them to try to take it from you. Does that make sense?"

It was easy to be cheered up by Draco's comfort, and Talitha felt her spirits lifting as he spoke and kissed her hair. She truly was the luckiest girl on earth, along with her sister. Not only were they a part of the second most powerful family in the world, she had an older brother and a father who cared for her immensely, unlike so many whose fathers neglected them in favor of pursuing money and social standing.

She continued to listen as he continued to speak, teaching her what she knew would be a valuable lesson on power and respect. She frowned at the idea that she hadn't earned her power--she'd done everything right, hadn't she? But as he continued, she was mollified, smiling faintly at the thought of Nolian and how lucky they were to have friends in the Emperor's family.

"You demand respect because of your family name, because of me and Father and we gladly shared with you and Sin. But, technically it still our power, so its easily for them to try to take it from you. Does that make sense?"

Talitha nodded slowly, looking down at her shoes as she processed what he had told her. "I wish I could have my own power," she said ruefully, softly. "But I suppose I never will, will I?" she asked, looking up at him. "Even when I'm married, I will be relying on my husband's power..." A frown pulled at the corners of her glossy lips. "I don't like this idea of forever living off of the power of those around me. Isn't there some way I can make a name for myself, Draco?"

Draco smiled at her. She was a true Slytherin, asking those questions. Some were content with sharing power from a husband or brother or father, but the great ones weren't. They wanted to stand on their own. He was proud that Tali was heading in that direction, though he wouldn't have loved her any less if she had relied on him for the rest of her life. He considered her question and the best way to answer it. "Yes, there is a way you can earn your own power. Look at Aunt Bellatrix. She is respected because of who she is and her own reputation, not because of Uncle Rodolphus. I have my own power which is seperate from Father and Nolian. If you want your own power, Tali, you have to stand up and take it."

He paused for a moment to let this soak in, then continued. "When you were younger, if someone bothered you, you ran to us to take care of it. There's nothing wrong with that and you should have, but that was using our power to protect you. Does that make sense? Now you are old enough and skilled enough that you can protect yourself. An example of something you could do to gain your own power would be to confront those girls or the boys who started it on your own. You yell at them. If they refuse to apologize, curse them. You have to defend and stand up for yourself. They might call you a bitch at first, but it won't last. Use me and Father as an example. We are nice and polite most of the time. People can come ask us things. However, everyone knows that if you cross one of us, it will be very painful for them. You have to build that reputation for yourself."

He smiled and kissed her hair. "It doesn't mean you can't ask me for help or advice. And it doesn't mean that if you get in over your head that I won't bail you out. Just come to me in private and I'll help you in such a way that it won't undermine your power. How does that sound?"

Talitha Malfoy was a good learner. When she really put her mind to something, she was a wonderful student, soaking in everything she was told and commiting it to memory. Draco's words were not going in one ear and out the other, and Talitha could feel a newfound will to establish her own name in the cutthroat society they lived in. The idea of cursing those girls was even excited, and her eyes sparkled as she pictured it. Of course. She'd kept them in line alright with threats of detention, but it wouldn't be enough to keep their mouths shut.

"How does that sound?"

"It sounds brilliant," she said, her grey eyes, mirrors of Draco's own, gleaming. Her sorrow at her situation seemed to be gone entirely, and it would certainly be interesting to see how things panned out for those two girls and all those Hufflepuff boys.

For the first time since arriving in the courtyard, Talitha remembered what she had been summoned there for in the first place. Straightening up with anxiousness, she turned her head to look at her brother, his face framed with the light blonde locks they shared. "You said you had a surprise for me! Oh, what is it, Draco? You have to know I've been driving myself mad over it all day."

This called for an evil laugh of triumph! He wasn't cheesy enough to do it out loud, but he had a nice laugh inside his own head. It was nice to see Tali stand up for herself or even think about doing it. It had hurt him to see her hurt and while he was more than willing to beat the shit out of anyone who hurt her, it was a proud moment for him when she decided that she wanted to stand on her own two feet. His sister knew enough curses and hexes to deal with any petty idiots in the school. She had the right to defend herself and he ould keep encouraging her to use it. It was fun to see the Slytherin side of her wake up, to see the gleam of plotting in her eyes. He would enjoy watching her plan her revenge and get front row seats to the cursing. He considered teasing her more when she said she wanted her surprise, but decided to give in. He always did, in the end.

"I have several things for you, dear Talitha." He gave her a charming smile. "As you know, the Prince's Ball is coming up as it does every fall to welcome in a new school year. I know that you were most upset when the dress you had gotten for the event was washed out and faded too much to be used. So I decided to help you out." He reached behind him and pulled out the first and largest of the boxes he had hidden. He released the illusion spell on the box so she could see it. With a flourish, he opened the lid and offered her the box to take out what was inside.

It was a beauitful dress, made of the softest silks. It was so light, it floated around the wearer with the slightest movement. He already had gotten it tailored to fit Tali perfectly. All of the top tailors knew the measurements of the Great Houses by heart and most of the pure lines. It was a perfect shade to compliment her eyes and make them look brighter. It was a sleeveless dress, since it was still so warm out and the skirt of it fell to about her knees. He waited patiently for her to examine it. He'd show her the rest of what he got after she inspected the dress.

Talitha could hardly keep from bouncing in her seat as he told her he had several surprises for her. She didn’t, of course--a lady never did such things--but inside her head she was dancing excitedly. He was so good to her!

As he brought up the Prince’s Ball, she couldn’t help but smile. Balls were her favorite events of the entire year. She’d been looking forward to the Hogwarts balls since she’d first heard about them, years before coming to Hogwarts. And the Prince’s Ball had proved to be everything she had imagined and more. The most beautiful gown, which she had searched high and low for before finally finding, had been horribly damaged when the Italian store she had had left it too near a window and let it fade. When a box appeared out of thin air, Talitha gasped, her eyes sparkling as she watched him open it. With a grin, she took the top of it and pulled it from the box. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw the most beautiful gown she had ever seen, a grey silk that felt as light and feathery as a cloud.

“Draco, it’s stunning!” she cried, turning back toward him without the words to express her thanks. Of course, speechlessness had never stopped Talitha before. After examining it several moments longer, turning it this way and that, and watching it swish it the lightest wind, she turned toward him, holding it carefully over one arm as she threw the other one around her brother in a hug. “Thank you, Draco! It’s perfect and magnificent and I’ll be the most beautiful girl at the ball!” She beamed up at him before turning back to the dress, unable to keep her eyes off of it for long.

She could just see it now. She’d walk into the Great Hall with whatever lucky boy she chose (she couldn’t help but want to picture herself on Adrian’s arm, but this was often the case). Everyone’s eyes would stick to her like glue as they caught sight of her, and she’d glow with beauty as she danced. All the girls would envy her, and all the boys would wish they were the one on her arm. Just thinking of it made Talitha smile.

He liked seeing her so happy. It was easy for him to do, had been since she was little. Anything sparkly or pretty was enough to do it. Many times it didn't eve take anything expensive to do it, though as a Malfoy he had standards and would never choose a gift because it was cheap. That was beheath him. He chuckled and watched as she explored the dress and held it up. Of course it was beauitful and stunning. She had to look her best for the Ball. It was one of the highlights of the younger generation's social calendar. Each one managed to top the last. Draco had been invovled in the production of this Ball for years. It was fun, but was also a headache for those who planned it. Honestly, there was a part of him that would be glad to have the bloody think done with. He had so many other things to do these days. Draco loved a Ball, but right now, he was tired of the girlf fawning all over him. Why couldn't one of them be their normal selves, instead of these high pitched, eye lash batting, giggling, 'shy' girls? He needed a partner to help himrun his and his father's estates as well as help him help Nolian rule. Someday the Prince would turn Emperor and Draco didn't doubt his status would rise as well. He needed a wife he could trust and lean on for support. He refused to end up alone like his father nor would be bring children into the world whos' mother only toletated them.

Draco inwardly sighed. He needed to stop thinking along such depressing lines. He wouldn't ruin his sister's good mood and there was no way he would burden her with his problems. He offered her a smile. "Sinistra's going to be jealpus, I think. Maybe I should get her one just like it and the two of you can go as twins, just like you used to do when you were little." His tone was teasing. He knew they had long ago insisted on wearing different outfits than the other. He could see the tears and the pouting now if they ended up wearing the same dress to any Ball, let alone to the Prince's Ball. In the end, it would be trouble for him.

"Oh, yes," he continued in the same tones, "Identical in every way. Dress, shoes, jewelry, hairstyles. I know! I'll find you twin boys for your dates! Won't that be fun, Talitha?" People claimed Draco was an evil, evil man. He was, but he was an even more evil brother. It was one of the perks that came with the job. He loved to tease his sisters. Just because they were related to him didn't mean they were immune or exempt from his tongue. Granted, he toned down the scathing, cutting remarks, but that didn't stop him from teasing them. He had to have some kind of fun, after all!
