This would never be happening if Fred didn't know what he knew. This would never have happened if he didn't know that his Master was awake in his quarters, calmly reading a book in the pre-dawn quiet. He would not be here if he didn't have permission from his Master. He definitely wouldn't be here if he hadn't overseen the creating of the wards and protections on snape's private quarters. Now, obviously he hadn't actually put up the wards but his Master had and there wasn't a precaution that hadn't been taken. And, of course, he would not be out and about if he didn't know that the Headmaster would not leave his quarters until Fred returned. Fred, being in charge of Snape's schedule, had never and would never be late and inconvenience his Master so it wasn't really that Snape was waiting on him. Fred was around at all time when his Master could ever possibly need to be out in public.
So here he was, in his khakis and smooth linen shirt, enjoying the peace and sweet air of the dawn. He walked with the hems of his pants brushing his bare feet through the dew-damp grass and let the serenity of the time of day sink into him. He loved the dawn more than any other time of day.

He came around a corner and spotted a thin, slumped figure sitting on the low stone wall around the courtyard. The boy had a book or stack of papers in his hands and seemed to be staring intently at the empty scene in front of him.
"Hey!" Fred called sharply, wondering what one of the School slaves was doing out here. He crossed the space between them... and then came to the sudden, unwelcome realization that the boy wasn't a slave. He was a student and, if the quality of his clothing was anything to go by, a high class one at that.
Fred fought the urge to add a scathing comment now that he knew who he was facing. It wasn't like he couldn't get away with it. A complaint about a slave's behavior in the school was directed to the Headmaster... and to get to the Headmaster you had to get through Fred.
Deep breath, Fred he scolded himself. Be nice. What would George do?
Stopping in front of the other boy Fred met his eyes and tried to look deferential... though he knew from experience that it wasn't a really good showing. "Your Pardon, my lord," he said clearly in the slowly warming air.

Romulus loved the dawn. The early hours of the morning was when everything came to life. The plants and animals and even the whole earth woke up from its slumber of the night hours to greet the sun once more. Not many people saw it the same way he did. He was special. Orion said he was retarded special sometimes, but he would just smile and poke her in the middle of the forehead in response. He tried to explain it to a housemate once and they just gave him a look like he had lost his bloody mind. So he just didn't talk about it. All he did was draw it. That soothed the restless feeling to try to make someone else, just one other person, understand him. It was all there in his art. If someone wanted to, they could read all about him in each stroke of the pencil, each bit of shading.

He didn't often get to be out at dawn. He had too many classes to stay up late and then get up early all the time. Today, he hadn't been able to sleep so had gathered his things and come out here. His classes were harder, he was more busy, and Father had told him a slave was coming for him. He didn't know what he felt about that. He wanted one, cause he was getting older, but he didn't know what to do with one. Ah well, he still had plenty of time to figure it out. The boy wasn't coming for a week or something. Worry about it later.

He didn't even glance up as he heard someone calling out. He could be where he was, on the wall. There was no rule against it. Whoever it was must be talking about someone else. He sketched another tree and a small bird that was stirring. Add a little shading here, a bit of color there....very nice. "Your Pardon, my lord," Romi glanced up. Oh....someone really was talking to him. He waved a hand. "Its fine. Don't worry." He paused. "You're one of the Headmaster's. Sorry, I haven't yet figured out how to tell you apart. I asked Draco once and he just smirked and said to look closer.. Such a help."

The first thing Fred thought, as the boy looked up at him was the this kid was an interesting little slip of a man and it would be fascinating to see what he grew up into. As he spoke Fred felt a smile tug at the corners of his mouth. Young, interesting, clearly intelligent and - Fred stole a rapid glance at the paper hopefully fast enough not to be noticed - obviously very artistic. He didn't know him, didn't know anything about him, though he did recognize the Lestrange coloring, and yet there was a part of him that wanted to clap him on the back and see if he needed help with anything. Which was worse than stupid because he was a perfect little pureblood and they generally didn't need help, or if they did they had more than enough places to get it from.
Lies, a part of him whispered, reminding him of all the times the Snaoe boys had sought out him or George in absolute desperation because they didn't dare show weakness to anyone else.

Fred shrugged off the whole thing, because it was all pointless. He had no real business with this Lestrange child and if he hadn't spoken back would not even still be here. But the boy had spoken and, as a slave - he felt a bitter gall clawing at his throat - it was his duty to answer back. He considered the question and grinned broadly. The Malfoy heir would know, wouldn't he.

"The simplest way is to ask , which never offends, or to have one of us take off his shirt," Fred replied, settling back on his heels and stuffing his hands deeper into his pockets. "If you see a wide burn scar then you know you're looking at Fred. George's back is fairly blemish free."
Fred paused, considering. It was weird but he didn't have a ready answer for this. He and George, obviously, didn't have this trouble and somehow Master Snape never had any problem with telling them apart. None of the other purebloods who wanted them to do something or other ever cared about names.

"I suppose, if you saw us side by side George would be the one with the darker tan, while Fred would be a little more pale from all his inside work. George is also much nicer to people whereas Fred is far too outspoken to be a very good slave. He's not a big fan of you lot," Fred winked at the boy, "but he's very useful to his Master so he isn't worried. But really, why does it matter? It's not like they're people or anything. Just slaves. Who cares which is which?"

Okay, he hadn't meant to add that last part. It had just slipped out because that kind of speech was usually in his head and that was the logical ending to it. He did feel a little bad to dump it all on the kid who was no more responsible for the world they lived in than Fred was... but hey, one of the two of them would have the power to change the world one day and it wasn't the red head.

Romi listened politely as the Weasley boy spoke. He would remember all the ways to tell them apart, though the first way was the easiest, to just ask. Some people got upset when asked, he had seen his cousins the Malfoy twins go off in a fit when they were younger because someone couldn't tell them apart. He had decided to never get caught in such a thing if he could help it. A flash of sympathy went through his eyes at the mention of a large burn mark. He was an odd mix. He was good with weapons and had no qualms about hurting his enemies in battler, but he was still a kid and still was bothered by seeing or hearing about people suffering. He had intended to offer his apologies and to nicely ask him which one he was when he registered the last part of the little speech. Hurt now crossed his face and he pulled his sketch book closer to his chest, shifting away from what he took to be a verbal attack.

"Just because I'm a pureblood, doesn't mean I agree with everything they say or believe, you know. Slaves are people and they don't deserve to be hurt." He fought with tears, trying desperately to be an adult and not give into childishness. "If I didn't care which of you was which, I wouldn't have bothered to ask. Its only polite to address the person you're talking to!" He swallowed hard and looked out at the sunrise.

"Not all of us are the same," he whispered softly. He wasn't. His father wasn't. He knew the Malfoys treated their slaves well. He was supposed to be getting his first slave and he'd never hurt him, even if he was mad. It was his job to take care of his slave. Romi decided right then and there to give Damon a slave's wand, to show him that kind of trust and respect right from the start.

What... Who... Where... WAS THE BOY CRYING?! or at least trying not to. Fred mentally reeled as, one by one, words slipped out of the young man's mouth and battered him.
ARGH! George you're right! I AM THE WORLDS MOST HORRIBLE IDIOT!
Thinking of his brother helped him gain a bit of control. but not much. Fred didn't do women and Fred didn't do people who cried. Women who cried were so far out of the question there was no point bringing it up. It was a whole different problem here though. It had never entered his head that his little flash of bitterness would upset a pureblood teenage boy so much. At worst there would have been an awkward silence and he would've left. At best the kid would've gotten mad and tried to take him down a peg... always fun. But instead he was trying to hold back tears. Oh god!

"Oh sweet Merlin's tapshoes," he groaned out loud, clapping his hand to his forehead. "This is why everyone likes George better than me. Not only is he way more attractive but he's not as dense as a block of marble nor does he have a habit of saying the most insanely stupid things."

He shook his head and let out a long breath. If it had been one of the Master's children he would've crouched so they were on semi-equal heights and apologized, but that might make the Lestrange kid feel like he was being talked down to and Fred couldn't afford any more screw ups today.

"And you are completely right. Not all of you are the same. If my Master was some kind of cruel monster who didn't give a shit about me," Oops. No swearing around the child Freddie. Tone it down. "then I would probably be trying to kill him instead of trying to kill for him. Or even better, die for him. It was beyond stupid of me to stereotype. It's just, you see," he let a self deprecating grin slip onto his face, "I have this problem with authority. We don't get along."

Fred mentally threw his hands in the air. He was being schooled in manners and how to properly treat other people by a PUREBLOOD if either of them had been around George and his Master would have both managed to bust a rib laughing.
Alas, sweet Fred, he intoned melodramatically, is there no depth to which you will not fall?

Well, apparently this was Fred if he was talking about what George would do. It seemed Romi had bothered the older boy with his talk or maybe he had seen him almost crying. Merlin, he prayed not. He didn't want to act like a kid. Well, Fred was a person too, even if he was a slave. Maybe he could just talk to him. He used to talk to one of the family slaves back home, especially once Orion had gone off to school. Fred certainly sounded loyal to his master, which was a good thing. He offered him a small smile. "I don't like authority much myself, except my dad, cause he loves me. Ri tries to tell me what to do all the time and I usually just ignore her. Just cause she's my older sister, doesn't mean I have to do what she says!" He was very emphatic about this point. He wasn't sure if he was trying to convince Fred so he would agree with him or just was really firm about his belief.

He considered him. "I don't think you're as dense as a block of marble. If you were," he pointed out with 14 year old seriousness, "then you wouldn't have even thought about what I said..." he grinned, "cause marble doesn't have a brain." He giggled softly. He couldn't help it, it was funny! "But then you wouldn't have heard me, cause marble doesn't have ears." Yes, sometimes he got very silly early in the morning. He had a sudden urge to drae Fred as a block of marble.

Romi looked up at him seriously. "You can swear, if you want. I've heard them all," he informed him sagely. "When Uncle Rodolphus gets mad, he says more swears than regular words. Its kinda fun to count to see how many normal words he uses." He suddenly stuck out his hand, realized it was covered in charcol, wiped it on his pant leg to get off as much as possible, then stuck it back out. "I'm Romulus Lestrange. Its nice to meet you, Fred."

Fred took his hand instantly, not bothering to check for residual charcoal. His own hands were frequently covered in ink or dirt. He wasn’t a big fan of being completely covered in all things dirt for long periods of time but he didn’t mind it in the short term. It certainty wasn’t worth hurting the boy’s feelings by snubbing him.
He smirked a little at the bad joke about marble and his grin widened when Romulus greeted him by name. “Very nice to meet you Romulus Lestrange. And I have to say, I don’t say that to very many people. When you’re a slave most people think they have the right to boss you around. You should consider yourself lucky it’s just one horrible older sister.”
The George-in-his-head scolded him for insulting a pureblood girl to one of her male family members. That was just begging for trouble, but Fred, rightly, shut him up by pointing out that Romulus had insulted her first.
“Now, I don’t exactly know your Uncle Rodolphus but I think I’ll abstain in front of you anyway. There’re a few things I’ll bet you good money he doesn’t know.”

Well, actually, in terms of Rodolphus Lestrange there were several things he doesn’t know, Fred mused darkly, but most of them don’t have anything to do with me or with swearing.

Now that he thought about it maybe he shouldn’t have brought it up. He cast around for a way to change the topic and finally blurted, “What’re you drawing?”

He was relieved that he managed to put the conversation back on track. Fred smirked at his joke, which also made him feel better and Romi couldn’t stop the pleased grin that came when Mr. Weasley said he really was happy to meet Romulus. He considered telling Fred that he really had two sisters, but then they were talking about horrible sisters, so maybe he had only one. Then the conversation moved onto the topic of his Uncle Rodolphus. Romi liked his Uncle, most of the time. He was a good fighter and Romulus loved to watch Uncle Rod and his father spar together. It was a beautiful dance of blades and bodies. Hmmmm, that sounded somewhat poetic. He was getting sidetracked.

There were days when he didn’t like the Older Lestrange line. That tended to be when they reminded him that he was the heir of the younger son and that his older cousin would be in charge of the Lestrange Family when they grew up. Romulus silently vowed again to be as powerful or more powerful than his cousin one day.

Romi’s attention was brought back to the present when Fred asked him what he was drawing. He felt a flash of intense perotectiveness for his work. Most people made fun of or didn’t understand his art. They couldn’t understand why the son of a Great House bothered with such things. He couldn’t tell them that it was how he kept his sanity somedays. Then he remembered that Fred had been nice so far and hadn’t made fun of him for anything else he had done or said.

Slowly, he shifted his art book away from his chest and angeled it so the older man could look at it. The sketch, in charcoal, was a picture of the sun rising from behind the Dark Forest. The lake was mostly in shadow off to one side. “I come outside in the mornings to do landscapes,” he said softly. “Every sunrise is a little different. Hogwarts never gets too dull to draw.”

Fred watched the boy's arms tense around the sketch pad and wondered if, somehow, he had blundered again. He had no idea how this kept happening. He knew how to talk to young men and he knew how to talk to purebloods... but he was slowly coming to the realization that Romulus Lestrange was not normal of either. He certainly wasn't acting like a normal pureblood. If he didn't care about his drawing then he'd just show it to Fred. If he didn't want to show it he would coldly order the slave off the topic. This hesitant reaction was strange. Fred opened his mouth to take back the question and change the topic... but then Romulus relaxed a little and held out the sketchpad.

Fred reached out toward it, but recognized it as charcoal soon enough to stop himself before he touched it. Until it was set with a glaze the chalky medium was easy to screw up. He crouched a little, one hand on the stone wall to keep his balance, in order to see it properly. It was mostly heavy, dark lines, capturing the main parts of the scene, with just a hint of fine work and shading so far, but Fred couldn't help but be impressed. He was briefly confused about why Romulus would have hesitated to show it to him, but only briefly. Fred felt a flash of fury at the thought of someone insulting what was so clearly real Art. No, he was more angry because someone would insult something that was clearly a part of the boy's soul. He couldn't imagine a day without being able to play with his knives and it looked like this was of similar import to the young man.

When he began to speak he kept his face tilted slightly away from the picture, to keep from blowing any of the charcoal. "I don't claim to be any kind of artist, but I can honestly say I have never seen anyone's personal drawing that is that good. It looks like something my Master would have framed in his study... or at least the beginning of something he would have framed."
