![]() {{The Unraveling There were a few things that wizards and witches could count on, something that would always be around—like deaths and taxes. The Statute of Secrecy had always carefully blanketed the magical community. It was the law above all others even in times of war the Statute was carefully guarded and not to be broken. But that was then. His name was Marius Kilgore, and he was forgettable. Two years behind the great Harry Potter, he’d been sorted into Slytherin where he had proved for the most part to be exceptionally uninteresting. Even his professors had to think twice about what his name was before calling on him. He was completely unremarkable. Until the day he killed the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister was about to leave the stage when a jet of light hit him squarely in the chest. Secret Service rushed forward but he was dead already. They didn’t have to do much to secure the area or to search for the assassin because Marius confessed immediately, and every camera in the room was pointed on him as he spoke, babbling away about unforgivable curses and magic and creatures straight from a fairy tale. “My name is Marius Kilgore, and I killed the Prime Minister. I mean the rest of you no harm. I come bearing a gift, a gift of knowledge. Among you walk witches and wizards with vast powers. They can kill you with but two simple words. This is what you don’t know, and so much more . . .” No one believed him, of course. He’d just killed the Prime Minister. He obviously had to be unbalanced, but how did he manage to do it? Minds turned back to the strange light. But magic? Surely not. As the Secret Service men gathered around him, Marius Kilgore vanished. Impossible and yet . . . An autopsy on the body was inconclusive. There seemed to be no reason for the death. There was no poison, no outward marks, no physical strain. It was as if his body had just . . . stopped working. “Not a mark on him.” “There has to be something.” “There isn’t. Tox screens are negative for everything we could possibly test for. There’s no reason for this man to be dead.” “What’s the matter with you, Doctor? Swayed by the speech of a crazy man?” “All I did was my job. There is no scientific reason for this man to be lying on this slab, but I’ve been around long enough to know that There’s sometimes more to the world than meets the eye.” Naturally, the wizarding community had not missed the spectacle. They gathered on street corners and sent owls to friends and relatives. Why? They wondered, and some worried that their peaceful existence might be at an end but a crack team of aurors was dispatched and many were reassured that soon Marius Kilgore would be locked up in Azkaban where he belonged. “Did you hear about what happened?” “What was he thinking?” “Do you think he’s a bit mad?” “Has to be. Why else would he want to do that?” “What about the muggles?” “Don’t worry about them. They wouldn’t see a fairy if it bit ‘em on the nose. They’ll talk themselves out of it. Always do.” Maybe the muggles would have talked themselves out of it, but suddenly protective spells all over Great Britian began to simply . . . unwind, and the muggles began to notice. A young couple hiking in hills that they thought they knew well suddenly stumbled across a magnificent castle where they would have sworn a set of rickety runes once stood. In London, people are shocked to discover that there’s another house on their street, and a bunch of tourists at Loch Ness get exactly what they paid for when they come face to face with the actual Loch Ness monster. It can no longer be denied. It can’t be explained away. Too many things happening at once effectively shattered the screen between the two worlds. Could the two worlds, separate for so long, ever learn to be one? It doesn’t seem so. Many muggles, upset by the deception that has been going on for so long, also fear for their safety. The power that the magical community can wield with little thought is frightening them. Many begin to wonder if there might have been long histories of wizards abusing power. How would they ever know? Wizards and witches were required to register so that a close eye could be kept on them. Basic rights such as freedom of assembly and right to privacy were repealed, and the magical community could only look on in horror. At the same time, a book written by Grindelwald surfaced. The carefully penned volume outlined his views on wizarding supremacy. When published, it began to gather a cult following, and it wasn’t long before a group decided to act on the book. They overthrew the muggle government and the tables were abruptly turned. But for every despotic government there’s a force set out to oppose them. A ragtag group of fighters, both muggle and magicians has arisen. It's the New Order of the Phoenix, and it's set out to prove that magical and non magical can work together for the Greater Good. This is the Unraveling. We're currently looking for Gryffindor students (seriously) and a Lucy Weasley as well as other subplot characters. |
