Witch/Wizard
- Wizards (male) and witches (female) are terms for humans who are born with the ability to use and manipulate magic. This ability is an inherited trait usually passed from parent to child.
- While pure-bloods are born of two wizarding parents and half-bloods are often born of one wizard and one muggle or muggle-born parent, Muggle-born wizards and witches are born with their magical abilities because they are distantly descended from a Squib who often marries into a Muggle family.
- In childhood, wizards and witches may exhibit random bursts of magic, called accidental magic, which are honed and controlled as they progress in maturity.
- To perform controlled magic, almost all wizards/witches need to use a wand, although the skill of wandless magic may be mastered in later life. A few highly advanced wizards can do controlled magical acts without a wand.
- Some wizards are born with abilities beyond those of the average wizard:
- Seers: Seers have the skill of insight into future events. They may garner this insight through visions and dreams or through scrying physical objects like tea dregs, tarot cards, and crystal balls. A seer is born, not made.
- Animagi: While some wizards have the ability to turn into animals, it is not an inherent power, but rather a trained technique. This type of wizard is called an Animagus. The Animagi have to register themselves with the Ministry of Magic of their country, because human Transfiguration can go horribly wrong.
- Metamorphmagi: Other wizards may have the ability to change only their physical appearance rather than their bodily form. This type of wizard is termed a Metamorphmagus. Such a wizard can change the shape of their noses, hair colour, and other physical attributes.
- Communicating with animals: Some wizards and witches have the ability to talk to animals. For instance, a Parselmouth can speak to snakes. This ability is extremely rare. Other wizards have an innate ability to communicate and bond with all kinds of animals.
- Squibs: Individuals from wizarding families who cannot perform magic at all are called Squibs. Squibs are much less common than Muggle-borns.
- Occlumens: Some wizards have the ability to protect their minds from others who can perform Legilimency. This ability is called Occlumency.
- Legilimens: Legilimens are people who can perform Legilimency. These people can tune into other people's minds, but have difficulty reading the minds of those people who can perform Occlumency. The act of Legilimens is referred to mind reading in the Muggle world.
Werewolf
- A werewolf is a human who, upon the rising of the full moon, turns into a fearsome near-wolf.
- Werewolves can be distinguished from regular wolves by several small distinguishing characteristics, such as the pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tail.
- At all other times, they appear as normal humans, though will often seem to be ill as the full moon approaches.
- This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, usually occurring when a human is bitten by a transformed werewolf.
- There is no known cure, but the effects can be lessened with the Wolfsbane Potion.
- Both Muggles and wizards can be infected with lycanthropy.
Vampire
- A vampire is a magical being that is known for biting people on the neck and sucking their blood.
- They are usually pale and gaunt, with sharp teeth for puncturing the neck.
- They have an aversion to garlic and can be kept at bay by its presence.
- Vampires are classed as beings by most ministries of magic, a fact that led both the centaurs and merpeople to decline the same status since they did not wish to be associated with them.
- They are not considered to be wizards.
- Although vampires are studied in Defence Against the Dark Arts at most wizarding schools, they obviously have rights and are not considered a true threat to the wizarding community.
- It is an opinion that is not universally held, however. Many advocate for their destruction. Some even going as far as becoming vampire hunters.
Veela
- Veela are a race of semi-human, semi-magical creatures reminiscent of the Sirens of Greek mythology.
- They appear to be young, beautiful human women, and their appearance and especially their dance are magically seductive to almost all males.
- When Veela are angry, however, they transform into something more like Harpies — their faces turn into cruel-beaked bird heads and long scaly wings burst from their shoulders, and they can launch balls of fire from their hand.
- Veela hair is a magical substance, suitable as a core for wand manufacture.
- Veela have been known to marry wizards, although it is unknown whether any have married Muggles.
- Children of these unions are half-Veela, and they will inherit magical ability from their fathers and beauty and charm from their mothers. Veela traits seem to persist for at least a few generations.
- Full-blooded male Veela do not exist.
- A true, 100% Veela is hard to come-by, but they still exist. Most, however, claim to have Veela blood. Those who claim have very little of it, but it's potent enough to still wield a Veela's charm and beauty. However, a true Veela is, by far, an exquisite individual.
If you wish for the admins to add a new Magical Being, please PM them with your idea, an organized description of the being, and your argument as to why they should be allowed on the board.
