Founded in 1690, shortly after the first pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts, The Salem Witches' Institute was simply referred to as "The Witches' Institute", before being renamed for the city which had, unknowingly, build itself around the school.

The school is located deep in the Massachusetts forests, perched on the edge of a waterfall by magic. Like all wizarding schools, it is unplottable. Since its founding, it has been protected from Muggles with many enchantments and charms. If a Muggle should ever come upon the school's location, all he or she would see is a daunting waterfall. Their brain will also become fuzzy and they will automatically turn away and walk back, almost in a daze, to where they came from.

The beautiful scenic castle is sustained entirely by magic. Without it, it would surely topple and fall into the rocky waters that wait below. The witches and wizards that built this castle were quite fascinated with building a castle that not only looking spectacular, but that was also built in a rather fantastical way. Like most settlers, they were sick of doing everything the way it had been done before in the land they had left. The founders wanted to make the castle far more impressive than some of the schools they've seen around the world, hence the unlikely location. The castle has five floors, not counting the turrets, which are used for Astronomy classrooms and dorms. There's a small garden in the back of the castle, where Herbology is held. The front of the school, which is usually only used to ceremonially greet guests, has a magically induced field to keep students or professors from falling off the edge.

There are two walkways which take students to either forests on the side of the large river which Salem sits on. On one side is a large Pitch, used for Quidditch games and practices. On the other side is a forest used for exploring or camping. It's quite a wonderful school and its scenic surroundings only make it that much more magical.

Students are recruited at the age of 13, when the North American Alliance of Witches and Wizards have determined that students are old enough to begin proper magical instruction. Students attend Salem for five years before they can begin interning with the career they most want to pursue. The classes offered at Salem are quite closely resembling to that of any other prestigious wizarding school: Herbology, Potions, DADA, Charms, Astronomy, Arthimancy, Muggles Studies, History of Magic, etc. The school has, every year, at least 1000 students attending at once. Although the school only has four floors, it's magically enhanced to accommodate the amount of students that attend the wizarding institution every year.

The student body is very vibrant. It organizes its own Quidditch matches; they also play Muggle sports, such as American Football, Soccer, Basketball and Tennis. The student body is allowed to vote for Student Senators and Student Presidents, one male and one female. Student Senators may only be elected from Year Three and Student Presidents may only be elected from Year Five. It is the job of the Student Presidents to organize social events, such as dances, charities and sports. With the help of Student Senators, Presidents collect money to fund the activities. Student Presidents also create tutoring groups to help underclassmen with their homework and upcoming tests. Student Senators aid Presidents in making all this happen. They also go out among the student body to figure out what exactly the student body needs.
