I'm not sure I completely understand the question because I don't know rugby but I'll try. Are you asking why players don't do a backwards lateral more often while running? If so, it's because of the risk factor involved in it. I guess players could, but the chances for a turnover to occur are much higher because if they miss the backwards lateral, it counts as a fumble. Also, if you think about the types of players on the field, there are only a few highly athletic players on offense at a time. So if a receiver caught it, his only real option would be another receiver or the running back, but they're usually blocking or on the other side of the field. Also, you can only do a forward pass behind the line of scrimmage, so you can only pass it forward once. I'm not sure if I answered that correctly or not.
