Well, 9 times out of 10, when you get called to be on the jury it's for minor stuff like civil disputes or petty theft, stuff like that. And to get picked, you have to be a US citizen, live within the jurisiditcion of the court, and an adult. You get picked at random out of a jury pool. How you actually get into the jury pool im not sure. A summons comes in the mail and says "be here at this time on this day"

For cases like the Zimmerman one, it's different. Jurors are asked question pertaining to the case to see whether or not the have a predetermined bias. They try to get people who know as little as possible about the case so they can be informed in the court instead of on TV and by the news.

There are a few more specifics on how they select the jury, I'm just not sure of them.

In my public administration class we learned a little more about the process.

I don't remember it exactly but it changes cases by case. As Brian said, usually you get chosen randomly for minor cases and it's considered a civil duty to serve on a jury if you are summoned. However, our professor talked to us a bit about bigger cases and how the jury is chosen for them.

If I remember correctly, for bigger cases the jury is chosen in a more select manner. There is still the screening process of whether people are biased toward the case or not, but the selectors will still try to get some people on the jury board that may defend or attack the person being charged.

Things such as race, ethinicity, social standing, etc, will be brought into consideration for a person being chosen. For example, if I believe correctly each side gets to bring in half of the jury. So if someone is defending a black person, they will do their best to try to get some black people on the jury that live in a similar social standing as the person who is being persecuted. Vice-versa, the other side will try to get many white people are are of higher class to be on the jury.

I'm sure the details are completely off but that's the general jist of what I remember. My example is kind of extreme and I don't think everything works out as easily as that. They do try to keep it very unbiased, but by trying to that you just bring in a different kind of bias. It's far from perfect.

Also for the non-US people, even though as an American it's a civil duty to serve on a jury, if you don't want to do it you can easily get out of it. All you have to do is say you're racist or extremely liberal or conservative (whichever the case calls for) and you can get out of the jury duty. People do it all the time.

Detroit is the worst city in the world. Michigan is one of the worst states. The United States is still the best.
