The Frozen One
God damn it was cold.

Maury had come here to investigate the suspicious freezing-over of this sole pond, when everything else was fine with flowing water and such nonsense. He now cursed himself for even thinking of such a stupid idea. Why the hell else would it be frozen in the middle of normalness? Of course it was because of ice types. Sneasel, Snorunt, Spheal, Seel, and bunches of other pokemon with stupid expressions on their faces were nonchalantly rolling around over the now frozen lake.

Well, he had already dragged his lazy ass out here, he might as well make some use of the opportunity to study SOMETHING.

"Well, the shape of these stalactites is odd... Maybe it's a change in their physical properties due to the unnatural environment around here."

Or maybe some pokemon just got in a fight.

Good god, this place is the epitome of boring! Maury, with the thought of dragging himself out here to look at some icicles hanging off the ceiling, stomped his foot and put both forefingers to his temples, rubbing them to relieve his anger. After a while of calming down, he finally managed to take a deep breath, however, the relaxation did not last for long as the ice frozen over the pond shook beneath him. Had he stomped that hard?

No. He hadn't. But he had stomped hard enough to disturb something underneath him. He looked below him, barely able to make out the sudden and angry movements of a creature below him through the very thick ice. He saw though that the pokemon had now started an attack. He began to run away, but before he could, the attack blew up from the ice, shattering a giant hole around it. From the hole emerged a giant twister, lifting Maury from his feet, rapidly spinning him around in the slicing wind of pure power.

For a few minutes the twister raged on, as if it itself had anger towards him and it itself was glaring at him as he was being torn to pieces, as if it itself wanted him dead. Then, it stopped. The onslaught had stopped, leaving him hanging in mid-air, though not for long as he fell flat on his back onto the ice. He groaned and struggled for a bit, bending his arms towards his back so he could rub it, trying to relieve the sharp pain the drop caused him. Slowly he sat up, still holding on to his back, and just as he was feeling better, another movement caught his attention. From the large hole the twister created leaped out a pokemon: a Dratini. Maury immediately recognized the Dratini, and now knew why he was so viciously attacked: This Dratini was an old experiment, one of the two he ever did on pokemon. He could tell it was the one because instead of the normal white spine-like things on her head, it was pure ice. Dratini now glared at him intently, positive her previous owner finally recognized her. But he remembered her all too well...

In his early years as a scientist, early twenties or so, he was most interested on freak pokemon. Of course he still is, but then it was all he could imagine doing. Back then he still had friends, family, and even a brother. He had a makeshift lab in his old room when he moved into his older brother's room after he moved out. It wasn't bad, it had some chemicals, a little splicer machine that might be able to cut a bubble if it was lucky, and a few testing tables, but he could work with it. Back at his lab he had taken a particular interest in two pokemon: Dratini and 'Janobi' (saved for when the English version comes out). His father had his prized pokemon, Piloswine, which Maury borrowed for his experiments with Dratini. He had Piloswine flash freeze several Ice Shards, and with his splicer he went into the very flesh of Dratini. He set several pieces of Ice Shard between Dratini's head and his spine-like fins on either side, and directed the splicer beam straight up and down the lines. Within a matter of minutes and after re-attaching the flesh, the ice slowly started spreading down her head, encasing her entire fins in ice.

To make sure it was legitimate, he made a small cut down the ice-fins, and it started bleeding. The very ice was bleeding! After his countless months spent researching the makeup of Dratini's DNA, the properties of ice, whether it would be compatible, the number of Dratini he failed on, he had finally done it! He picked up Dratini and held it up, arms outstretched, and looked it in its eyes, which had turned an -you guessed it- ice blue. The Dratini, who he had not named because he felt names were not necessary, looked him in the eyes and tried to smile back, though she was confused at what had happened. She noticed her fins were now ice, and was rather unnerved, but she wasn't the kind to lash out at him. She had no harm that was there just for the purpose of hurting her, so she shouldn't be mad... Right?

Maury, with his amazing new invention, decided to go back to Crystal Cave, where he had found her, so he could battle other Dratini. He had combined her with Dragon's only other weakness! Why shouldn't he use it to his advantage? Battle after battle he pitted Dratini after countless others, overpowering them with her new powers. However, what went unnoticed was that battle after battle, the Dratini who were bullied on started to band together, all sharing one thing: a hate for this new freak in the area.

Maury and Dratini just finished another battle against another helpless Dratini, and after yet another celebration of victory, the victim Dratini slithered back into the lake, with a seemingly eerie look on its face. Maury paid no mind to it, though it was rather unsettling.

"Well Dratini, my experiments seem to have paid off, and it seems like no others will step up to fight. We should go anyways, it's getting dark. Come on."

Before Dan turned to leave, a sudden but faint white glow started to emit from the edge of the lake. It was small at first, but then it grew larger and brighter until it vanished, just like that. Then another light came, lit up, and disappeared. Then another, and another. What was this? Intimidated, Dan took a step back, prepared to leave in a hurry if anything went wrong. From the lake emerged a head. This head was dark blue and had wings on either side with a small orb-like gem on its neck: a Dragonair. It slowly slithered out, followed by two more and then a final one. Four of the beaten Dratini had banded together and evolved to take on this monster-Dratini.

With vicious glares, the four of them banded together and began moving in a circular motion, going faster and faster until they were violently spinning in the air. In the center of their four-way circle emerged a dark purple energy, which grew larger and larger, forming a giant tornado of pure dragon power. Once at full power, the Dragonair threw the combined-strength Dragon Rage straight at the Dratini, who jumped backwards to try and be protected by Maury, only to be greeted with cold air; he had left her there, alone. He had ditched her. In her time of critical need, he left. Disappointed and giving up, she stood with resignation as the Dragon Rage engulfed her, easily tossing her around and knocking her out.

When she came to, she was flat on her stomach, surrounded by numerous ice pokemon. One of them helped her up, and when she looked around, all she saw was ice: ice pond, ice floor, strangely-shaped ice stalactites... She had been thrown in here by the others. I guess this is where they thought she belonged. But she hadn't only been thrown in here by the others, she had been thrown in here by Maury, by her owner she thought cared about her...

Back in the cave, Maury woke up after being thrown behind some rocks, hitting his head and being knocked out due to the strong force of the Dragon Rage. He got up from a kneel, stretched out and looked around. The scene looked normal. Nothing was there, the lake was still, the Dragonair were gone, but... So was Dratini! He frantically searched around, looking for his precious creation. After half an hour of failed searching, Maury hung his head, turned around and headed towards the exit. Dratini was nowhere to be found.

But no! Dratini was right here! He had come back to look for her, but never once considered coming to where an ice-type might be! Though she was enraged and attacking him, she was here! But excitement probably shouldn't be the first thing on his mind, he should probably be running away from the bursts of chilly winds coming towards him. He ducked and rolled out of the wind, but his shoe got caught and was easily frozen. Now walking around with a frozen shoe, he faced Dratini. "Dratini! Come here, now!" He commanded. Even more enraged, Dratini blew another gust of Icy Wind at him. Determined to assert himself, he stood through the wind, enduring the bone-shilling degrees, and after it passed over, he glared down Dratini, who looked shocked that he effortlessly braced the attack.

Dratini, come here. Now. He didn't have time to be happy-go-lucky about this, that wouldn't be the fastest way to solve this situation. What he needed to do was to get her over here so he could explain. Or maybe he wouldn't even need to. Who knows.

Dratini looked nervously at Maury, who was still glaring at her. She didn't know what to do, but memories of her owner came flooding back into her brain. Slowly she slithered over in front of him, prepared to let loose hell if he tried anything. Maury, with a changed expression in his eyes bent down and put his finger up to her chin. "Dratini... I never left you. The Dragon Rage knocked me back, and I guess you didn't see me, but I never intentionally left you... Never..."

Dratini looked Maury up and down, examining him for his sincerity. She didn't see any signs that he was just bullshitting for her odd powers, so she loosened up her posture and relaxed her body. Dan slowly reached into his lab coat, to which Dratini responded by tensing back up and growling at him, slightly pulling back. Dan's hand came out of his pocket, revealing an old-looking pokeball.

"Dratini, I know you remember this. I've kept it all this time. So, come on, come join me again.".

Without hesitation, she nudged the button, opening the ball, sucking her in it in a flash of red light, as if she had been in there just yesterday. Maury stuck the pokeball back in his pocket, turned around and left. He'd done a lot of studying today.
