“I’m fine, Honey, I promise. It’s just a little sore; it should be gone in a week or so.”

Hannah brushed the blonde Ursaring away with a gentle hand, her bruised cheek with with sloppy bear kisses. With a moan, Honey insistently put her paw around Hannah’s shoulders, once more drenching the inflicted area with affectionate kisses, like an animal trying to heal a wound. Hannah pursed her lips and closed her eyes, pushing away the massive bear as best she could while simultaneously wiping the spit from her face. The trainer winced some as she touched the black and bruised spot around her eye, but cast the notion aside. As far as she was concerned, the attack had done nothing but make them stronger; after all, Bonnie had evolved. Rose had learned to attack a threat, whereas before she had merely cried. Hell, they had reached Elite Four status!

Walking along the far end of the shore, she stared out along the crystalline surface of the water, pondering how to go about catching a water type Pokémon. She didn’t have a rod nor a Pokémon that knew Surf or Dive – how was she even supposed to go about catching the ones that were in the center of the lake? Pursing her lips, Hannah looked around. Then, eyes widening, she pointed excitedly to a nearby tree. As far as she could tell, it looked sturdy.

“Honey, bring me a strong branch and a long vine. We’re going to make a fishing pole.”

Whether or not Honey knew what a fishing rod was, the blonde bear happily obliged. Standing next to the tree, she extended her curved claws, and with one easy swipe, an entire branch came tumbling down along with the various vines hanging from it. Breaking one of the longer, thinner limbs from the branch, Honey ran her claws along the limb, smoothing it down the best she could. Smiling, Hannah took the now smooth limb from the Ursaring, relieved that it seemed sturdy enough to support the weight of a Pokémon that weighed no more than nine or ten pounds. That would work, wouldn’t it? After all, Goldeen weren’t that heavy, were they?

Tying the vine around the end, Hannah held the makeshift pole up, a smile on her face. “This should work, right?”

Now all they needed was bait. Rummaging around in her bag, the girl took out a sweet poffin and (ignoring Honey’s whines in the background), tied it at the end of the vine. Wasting no time, the girl balanced herself at the edge of the bank and tossed the vine and poffin in, the bait only extending a few feet from the shore – not even deep enough for a fish to comfortably swim. Before she had time to give up and toss the rod in, she heard a loud, gruff, rasping laugher from behind her. Turning, she noticed an elderly man leaning into a walking stick, using it to balance himself as he roared with laughter, tears staining his wrinkled eyes.

Irritated, Hannah withdrew her makeshift pole from the water, “What’re you laughing at?”

“You, ‘o course.” The old man wiped a tear from his eye, catching his breath from laughter. Propping himself up on his walking stick, he stumbled forward towards the girl and her Ursaring, eyeing her makeshift rod. Once more, he started to chuckle and shook his head. Upon seeing Hannah’s disheartened expression, he lifted his hand, still laughing and shaking his head, causing himself to wheeze.

“What do you think you’re going to catch with that piece of junk there, lass? An’ you ought to know that any Pokémon worth catching wouldn’t be in two feet of water. Oh, I needed that chuckle, lass, I did. Tell you what, though, I’ll make you a deal."

Wobbling closer, he pointed to the far end of the shore. Not too far from the group was a small dock with an extremely small, canoe-like boat that could hardly be called a boat at all. "I like your creativity with that piece o’ junk you’re callin’ a rod. You can use my boat to row out if you want. If you do happen to catch anythin’ with that vine, then the boat ride’s free. If you turn up with nothin’, I wouldn’t mind a couple dollars for my troubles.”

Hannah raised a brow, looking to Honey, then the old man. With a smile, she outstretched her hand, eagerly taking the old man's and shaking it in acceptance. Not too long after the deal had been made, Hannah was untying the small canoe-like boat from the dock and climbing inside. After a small push from Honey on the dock, she was awkwardly floating in the crystalline waters, her makeshift rod in hand. Using the small paddle to give her a good push, she started to leisurely float to the center of the lake. From the dock, she heard the old man call out.

"What're you using for bait?!" He shouted, ready for a joke.

"Sweet poffins!" Hannah called back.

There was another silence, and then the familiar sound of the old man laughing hysterically. Ignoring the chatizing from the dock, Hannah pulled a piece of sweet poffin from a pouch on her side, tying it to the end of the vine. With a calculated toss, she cast the 'lure' out, about fifteen or so feet away from the boat, but it was considerably deep considering her distance from the shore.

From the shore, the man wiped another tear from his eye.

"Ain't never seen no one catch nothin' on a sweet poffin. What eats those?"

The corners of Hannah's mouth twitched into a frown as she watched the chunk of poffin float uselessly.

Then, from below, a dark shape emerged and swam around the bait, a horn visible beneath the water. Snapping out of her previous daze, Hannah leaned forward, watching with bated breath as the fish swam up to the poffin. The Goldeen seemed to consider the poffin, but promptly disappeared, clearly uninterested after a small nibble. Hannah released the breath she'd been holding, sinking back with a look of sheer disappointment. Catching a Goldeen had been the whole reason she'd even rowed out here in the first place. What was she supposed to do now?

"Guess I'll be paying that old man. Damn it,"

Harsh words such a young lady. Heaving a sigh, Hannah rested the makeshift pole against the side of the boat, using her free hand to absentmindedly dig around her pouch for a few dollars she could give the man. All she wanted to do was just return the man's boat, give him the money, and forget this even happened. The last thing she wanted to hear was how stupid she was for the second time. Though, he did have a point.

Glub, glub.

A sudden noise caught Hannah's attention, drawing her away from the money in her pouch. Something was nibbling at the poffin. Before she had the chance to even tug the rod, the poffin suddenly vanished and the pole nearly flew into the crystalline water below. Emitting a surprise shout, Hannah gripped the makeshift rod, clenching her teeth as she fought against whatever was on the other end of the line. Without the reel, she couldn't just crank the fish in.

Putting the pole behind her, she grabbed the vine and started to pull it, simply pulling the feisty Pokemon in by hand. After a few moments, a shape became visible just beneath the water, prompting a smile from Hannah. But something was off - the scales didn't seem to be that of a Goldeen. Was it a Magikarp, then? No, that didn't sound right. Magikarp were a bright red - this Pokemon was a rather dull and ugly looking beige color.

There wasn't much time to think about this as she pulled it in, because the fish suddenly flopped into the canoe.

Dropping the pole, Hannah grabbed the flailing fish and pried the vine from it's gasping mouth. After she had freed the Pokemon, she held it out in front of her, looking into it's black, hollow, sunken eyes. Instinctively, the corners of her mouth twitched into a disappointed frown, not quite sure what it was, even with her infinite knowledge of Pokemon. Perhaps it was rare? Or perhaps it was just so damn ruddy that no one cared to document it in her field guide?

"This isn't what I wanted..."

Hannah murmured silently, still holding the Feebas out in front of her.

The shabby looking Pokemon's already sad eyes fell upon hearing the human. Looking at the Pokemon, there was such an overwhelming sense of despondency in it's eyes that Hannah's heart immediately wrenched when she realized she had hurt it. But what was she supposed to say? The Feebas was so utterly homely and mangy that she had said the first thing to come to mind. Still, it obviously had feelings. It even seemed to realize how shabby it looked, hence the immediate drop in it's demeanor when Hannah called it ugly.

"No, no, I'm sorry." The trainer corrected herself, sitting the fish down inside the boat.

Unmoved by the apology, the Feebas sat upright (the best a fish could, anyway), it's eyes cast to the side. It's torn, blue fins were dropped to it's side and it's large mouth seemed to be permanently etched into a frown. The look of sadness was such a depressing sight, that Hannah immediately felt horrible for making it feel worse. She watched the fish, head tilted as it seemed to look anywhere but at her. It wasn't that bad, she realized.

Sure, it seemed a bit shabby and old looking, but it could have been worse.

In a way, it was ugly that it was almost cute.

"No, really, I didn't mean it, baby. Do you want something to eat?"

The fish looked up, sad eyes inquiring.

"Feebas?"

Hannah smiled softly, taking another sweet poffin from her pouch, offering it to the Feebas.

"So you're name is Feebas? Go ahead and eat it, it's good."

Without warning, the Feebas seemed to flop forward, mouth engulfing Hannah's hand as it swallowed the entire poffin, a sudden look of alleviation on it's perpetually sad face. Unnoticeable to the naked eye, as it swallowed the poffin, one of it's rocky scales sparkled and shimmered. Seeming to realize this minuscule change, the Feebas flapped it's fins. It still had a frown etched onto it's face, but somehow it didn't seem as sad as it did before.

"There you go, baby. I think I should name you. How about, Cher? Do you know what Cher means?"

Unmoved, the fish simply twitched it's blue fin.

"It means pretty."

Hearing this, the Feebas looked up, it's hollow eyes wide as it stared at the girl, almost in disbelief. It scooted forward as Hannah took a Pokeball off her belt, offering it to the fish. The Feebas looked from Hannah to the Pokeball, then suddenly lurched forward, touching the ball with it's head. As would be expected, the Feebas materialized inside, the ball showing no signs of a struggle.
