“Well… This walk sure did end up being a pain in the ass,” Jason muttered to himself irritably through clenched teeth. He laboriously lifted his right leg up, and planted it firmly in front of him, then repeated with his left, a look of extreme physical exertion on his face with every motion. “I kept hearing about that stupid cave up here, and I figured I’d be able to find a decent Pokemon here to get me out of any tight spots I might run into… But at this rate, I’ll probably be dead before I can even find one,” he bitterly commented to himself. “I’ve already done away with half my water supply… This cave better show up soon…” Suddenly, the sound of a stick breaking rang out loud and clear. Jason turned his head to face it so quickly, it was a wonder that his neck didn’t break. All he saw was a small, grayish blur of movement. There was a bright light trailing it… Fire? “What could that’ve been?” he wondered aloud. Approaching the spot where the whatever-it-was was standing, something..g caught the trainer’s eye… A narrow opening in the side of the mountain. Jason very carefully inspected the suspicious path, looking for anything potentially dangerous within it. He leaned back a bit, and growled in exasperation. “It’s too dark to see anything,” he announced angrily to nobody in particular. However, this angered reaction was followed by a wistful sigh. “…Even so, checking out this little crevice sure beats the thought of walking up this stupid mountain for another ten miles or so… Maybe I’ll just give it a quick look. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess.” He turned himself to the side and cautiously began to shuffle his way down the narrow path between the two large rock masses. After about 10 seconds of shuffling, something bizarre happened. The air in the top half, from around Jason’s waist and above, began to become noticeably cooler. Meanwhile, the lower half began to heat up. Hey… What’s with the temperature? Jason wondered curiously. I feel freezing, but… My legs feel like they’re on fire. What the heck…? Out of nowhere, the boy stopped his advance through the large crack. A sudden urge to just turn around now assaulted Jason’s mind. He vigorously shook his head, as if to shake the idea out of his mind. Oh, come on… I’m not gonna let some stupid temperature difference scare me, he firmly decided before once again resuming motion. The trip through the narrow path took about a minute, but to Jason it felt more like an hour. The crack started to become gradually wider. “Hey, it’s getting a little roomier here,” he observed. “I must not be too far off from… Wherever this leads to.” Despite this uplifting thought, Jason frowned. Something was wrong. “But there’s no light at the end of this tunnel. There’s no way I can be at the….” Jason was cut off mid-sentence by a loud crunching sound. Immediately, the boy completely ceased any kind of motion, becoming as still as a statue. THAT couldn’t be a good sign. Cautiously, the trainer gently and slowly started to take another step. However, halfway through, a tremendous crashing sound shook the entire tunnel, as light poured in from the ceiling like a waterfall. “…End,” Jason finished blankly. Slowly, Jason directed his vision upwards. Some rocks had fallen from the top of the… Wherever he was. That explains the sudden light. As he redirected his vision forwards, he shuddered at what he saw. It was a massive, gaping hole that seemed to be the entrance into some strange cavern of sorts. It seemed to be completely empty, and was dead-silent, other than an occasional clattering sound that was similar to small feet running across a hard surface. The eeriest thing about it is that the cave was completely dark… Save for a very faint, sinister orange glow that seemed to be emanating from the murky depths of the cavern. Staring into the maw of the looming opening before him, Jason took in a deep, meditative breath. “Well, I guess I’m not accomplishing anything just standing here,” he pointed out firmly. Confidently, he waltzed into the cave. An echo rang off the intimidating, towering walls of the cave with each step the trainer took. Slowly but surely, he made progress towards the dim light in the back of the cave. At least he could actually see past his nose here. That strange clattering sound broke the silence of the cave once more. Except… It seemed louder. Much louder. Jason froze mid-step. The orange light was moving. “Uh-oh,” he breathed at a low volume. “Well, this can’t be a good sign…” Just as abruptly as it began, the clattering stopped. The orange light once again became stationary. A veil of silence settled over the cave once again. Jason remained totally still, sensing that something wasn’t quite right. Out of nowhere, a roar of cries disturbed the once-prominent silence. A herd of small, green forms had gathered around Jason’s feet. Axew. A LOT of them. “Whoa!” the trainer exclaimed in surprise, taking a few steps back. A small group of Axew broke off from the main crowd and formed a wall behind him, trying to prevent him from leaving. “Well… This is a problem,” he stated under his breath as the Axew all barked at him fiercely. Once again, the orange light began to move towards Jason. As it got closer, the trainer could make out what exactly was emitting the light: A strange, dark red Axew with flaming tusks. It‘s eyes glowed with the same orange hue as the flames on it‘s tusks. So that’s what I saw out on the mountain… Jason realized silently. I’ve never seen anything like that before. The dark Axew shrieked at a near deafening volume, which was only increased by the echoes. This one definitely doesn’t sound too happy, Jason observed silently. It sounds like it’s their leader or something. He paused for a second, assessing the situation. Hm… So I still have a bit of water left. Maybe I should start by putting out that thing’s fire? Abruptly springing into action, Jason swiftly pulled out a half-empty water bottle. He ripped the top of it off, and chucked it at the flaming Axew. All of the regular ones gasped, not believing that anybody would dare do such a thing to their leader. They were clearly terrified of the dark red Axew. As the water enveloped the leader‘s tusks, the fire was immediately washed away. Jason breathed a sigh of relief. Well, at least that worked out okay… As soon as the trainer had said that, he wished he hadn’t. The fire flickered back into existence soon after it was extinguished, almost as if at will. “What…!?! Dammit!” Jason cursed loudly. The regular Axew all wailed at the loud noise, and scattered all over the cave. The only one left was the leader. The flames roaring on it’s tusks intensified for just a second as all of the Axew fled. It seemed as though the fire became fiercer when the Axew was angered. Despite the fact that it was now alone against something much bigger than it, the Axew stared daggers at Jason, it’s glowing eyes burning a hole through his very soul. Sheesh, this thing is pretty scary, he thought. Even I don’t like standing this close to it. I can only imagine how those other Axews must feel. They don‘t exactly seem like the bravest bunch… The Axew tilted it’s head slightly to the right. Why wasn’t this guy scared? It had no problem scaring the other Axew, and yet this person wasn’t even fazed. Was it… Not intimidating enough? Perhaps one can only be so threatening at 2 feet, even if their tusks are on fire… Out of the corner of his eye, Jason noticed the Axew hand it’s head dejectedly, ashamed. The flames on it‘s tusks were very weak, becoming little more than a faint orange outline, barely lighting up the surrounding area. Huh…? What’s with that one?, he wondered. Maybe because I wasn’t scared of it…? He carefully stepped towards the small Pokemon. “Uh… Are you all right?” At the sound of the trainer’s voice, the Axew’s head immediately snapped up as it jumped back, the flames on it’s tusks exploding back to full size. Jason simply stared at the Pokemon blankly. Was he supposed to act intimidated or…? Not seeing any sort of reaction out of Jason, the Axew’s flames gradually died down until they once again reached the point of nothing but an orange outline. It tried to look threatening, but at this point it was clear that it was pretty disappointed in itself. Jason waited for a few seconds before continuing to walk towards the Axew. I wonder if I could get it to come with me, he asked himself silently. It could come in handy. “Hey, you with the fire. You alright?” he inquired, although there wasn’t any real sign of concern in his voice. The Axew jumped slightly at the sound of Jason’s voice. It sure didn’t expect Jason to start addressing it. What, now it’s so non-frightening that he wants to hold a conversation now? As it started to hang it’s head once again, Jason spoke up again. “Hey, hey, hey, stop. Look, you want to be more threatening, don’t you? I can help you out.” The Axew excitedly brought it’s head up once more, but then assumed an apprehensive look. Was this one really trustworthy? Jason simply shrugged in response to the Axew’s non-trusting look. “Hey, you don’t have to trust me if you don’t want to. But I need a Pokemon, and you seem to want to be threatening. What better way to accomplish that than training, and what better way to get training than get yourself a trainer? It’s a win-win situation for both of us. What do ya say?” The Axew continued to look suspicious. Jason just shrugged again. “Hey, what could I possibly have to gain by tricking you? You’d be my only form of protection, for a little while. If I had any other Pokemon, I would’ve used ’em when you got your little buddies to surround me.” The Axew still didn’t seem too sure about whether or not it trusted the trainer. But the boy did have a point… He didn’t have any other Pokemon at the moment. Why would he cast off his only form of protection? After a long period of silence, the Axew nodded, albeit somewhat begrudgingly. A grin began to slowly spread across the trainer’s face. “Sounds good then! In that case…” He pulled a Pokenall out of his jacket pocket. At the site of it, the Axew emitted a low, rumbling growl. Jason raised an eyebrow inquisitively. “No Pokeball, eh…? Well, I guess that’s alright for now. But only until you get too big for me to carry you around everywhere, got it?” The Axew nodded, looking a little happier at the thought of not having to be cramped up in that stupid little circle. Jason turned around and began to walk back towards the entrance. “All right then, c’mon. Stay close, okay? Keep the flame bright, I’d love to be able to see this time…” The Axew obeyed, following close behind as Jason prepared to once again enter the narrow crevice. Sure, there was a chance that this trainer is completely incompetent and won’t be able to help at all. But the small Pokemon had a good feeling about the partnership.
