“Man, going through that stupid crack sure is a lot easier when you can actually SEE,” Jason stated loudly, relieved that he finally managed to get himself a Pokemon. He averted his eyes from the path ahead and looked down at the bizarre companion he had managed to acquire. “So, flame-face,” he called out obnoxiously. The Axew turned around, staring at the boy irritably. It was already abundantly clear to the small Pokemon that his new trainer wasn’t exactly the most polite person on the face of the earth. Jason didn’t pay the annoyed look any mind, however. “Y’know,” Jason continued, not even noticing the look that the Axew was giving him. “You really need a name. I can’t be calling you flame-face forever.” He carefully observed the Axew, gently tapping his chin in thought. “Hm… Axeface? No… Orange-tusk? Still no…” Jason gritted his teeth together in frustration. “This isn’t as easy as I thought it would be,” he pointed out to himself. The Axew simply rolled it’s eyes, although it was difficult to tell due to the fact that it’s eyes resembled two balls of flame lodged in it’s eye sockets. Jason snapped his fingers. “I got it!” he announced triumphantly. “Xactyl!” The newly-christened Xactyl showed no reaction to it’s new name for a few seconds, appearing lost in thought, as if to get a feel for it. Then, it nodded quickly, as if to say ’it’ll do’. Jason returned his vision to the road ahead. “Alright then, sounds good. From this moment on, you’re officially Xactyl,” he stated firmly. “No more talking, though. I used up the rest of my water trying to put that fire on your tusks out, and I really don’t dig the idea of dehydrating too much.” Xactyl said nothing in response, deciding not to address the fact that Jason was the one doing all the talking. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, Jason stopped dead in his tracks. What was that noise? He stayed totally silent, concentrating on hearing any sounds that may give some sort of clue of what that was. Nothing. “Xactyl,” he mumbled quietly. “Don’t move a muscle. I have a bad feelings about this.” The Axew obeyed, albeit looking very confused about it. It must not have heard the sound. Realizing that it had been noticed, the source of the noise froze in its tracks. Now that Jason was suspicious of his surroundings, things were going to become more interesting. An odd sound soon took place only to be covered up by the rustling of leaves. Another long silence, and before anything real exciting could happen, the ground beneath Jason and Xactyl's feet suddenly collapsed a good two feet. If the two had fallen in the trap, snorts of laughter from a Pokemon would be heard clearly above and behind them. To look would reveal a rather normal looking Sandshrew producing the laughter. |

Jason narrowed his eyes suspiciously. His vision darted here and there, trying to spot anything out of the ordinary around him. Xactyl’s flames slowly began to rise up. The small Pokemon was getting quite anxious. He was ready to battle at a moment’s notice. However, that moment didn’t come as quickly ash e expected it to. Slowly, the flames began to die down once more as the Axew gradually descended into the deep, inescapable pit of boredom. Meanwhile, Jason was more focused on the strange sounds that this… Whatever-it-was started making. He didn’t have the slightest clue of what it could be. I can’t hear a damn thing! Those stupid leaves are making this a lot tougher than it needs to be, he thought peevishly. Or maybe… Whatever it’s doing involves the leaves, he mused. Either way, he knew something was up. He just had trouble figuring out what. All of a sudden, a cracking sound was violently emitted from the ground, as the earth itself seemed to start giving way beneath Jason and Xactyl. The trainer’s eyes shot wide open to an absurd size. What the hell…! he mentally exclaimed in alarm. The flames on the Axew’s tusks completely dissipated at a shocking rate as fear found it’s way to it’s small face. Was whatever-this-thing-was destroying the mountain!?! Xactyl wasn’t so sure he was ready to fight something that could do THAT. Before either trainer or Pokemon could say a single word, the ground suddenly collapsed. Jason and Xactyl both yelped in unison, both sounds filled with clear shock. Both of their screams were cut short as they faceplanted into the bottom of the 2-feet-deep pit. As soon as he hit the ground, Jason scrambled back to his feet. …Huh? It’s already over? he asked silently. …Well, that wasn’t exactly the horrible death I was expecting… He looked up at the Sandshrew. …And that isn’t exactly the horrible beast I was expecting. Xactyl, on the other hand, wasn’t spending any mental power on the positive side of things. Soon after Jason recovered, the Axew shot up, a terrible rage filling it’s bright, glowing eyes. It stomped on the ground hard with it’s right foot, causing the flames on it’s tusks to burst into an intensity far greater than Jason had seen up until this point. Upon seeing the Sandshrew up above, the Pokemon reached it’s breaking point. Glaring daggers in the sand mouse’s direction, Xactyl reared it’s head back, and emitted a loud roar, blue flames spewing from it’s open mouth. The Dragon Rage attack darted towards the Sandshrew at an alarmingly fast rate, threatening to engulf it in the eerie-looking fire. |

The Sandshrew stopped laughing as it realized that the Axew and human weren't laughing. No sense of humor with these two, or what? That thought, however, was cut short when the little troublemaker realized the Dragon was preparing to attack. The Mouse's first instinct was to Defense Curl and so it did. Before Xactyl had finished setting up the Dragon Rage, the Sandshrew had curled up into a ball and its body glinted in the sunlight as the Defense Curl kicked in. This, however, didn't save it from the attack. It was such a relief when those dragonic flames were gone! A bit irritated with the human and its aggressive follower, the Sandshrew shook itself as if to shake off the pain and started sliding its paws against the ground. At first only dirt was being flung, but soon the dirt turned to sand at the Pokemon's touch and a Sand-Attack was raining down on Jason and his partner. |

At the sound of Xactyl’s roar, Jason quickly directed his vision towards the small Pokemon. A surprised expression occupied his face at the sight of the Dragon Rage. Whoa. I know he‘s used to being feared and all, but I didn‘t expect Xactyl did get THIS mad, he thought. I ‘d better calm him down before things get too crazy. He began to walk over to the Axew. “Hey, Xactyl! Calm down, it’s not that big a deal!” he instructed. It was clear that Xactyl was beside himself with anger at this point, however. There was no way he’d listen to his trainer. As the Sandshrew began to kick up dirt, Xactyl visibly tensed up. Noticing this, Jason looked up at the small Mouse Pokemon. It looked like it was… Digging? No, no chance of that. A Sandshrew trying to dig would be making way more progress than this one was. “What is this thing trying to do…?” he wondered aloud. The Axew, however, seemed to have a much better idea of what was going on than Jason. As a resident of the mountain, he knew what to expect. Xactyl darted behind Jason as the dirt began to turn into sand flying down towards the two of them, using the trainer as a shield. While the small Dragon was largely safe from the attack, the same couldn’t be said about his trainer. “Dammit! What kinda crap is this!” he shouted in annoyance. “Don’t attack me! He’s the one that attacked you! I didn’t even tell him to! Dammit!” he repeated, vigorously rubbing his leaking eyes in an attempt to get the sand out of it. Attempting to capitalize on the opportunity that presented itself, Xactyl tried to rush in towards the Sandshrew from behind his trainer. However, as he did so, a small amount of sand made it’s way into his eye. Howling in pain and unable to see, the Axew began to wildly fling blue fireballs towards the Sandshrew’s general location. He hoped that at least one would catch it… And that none would catch it’s trainer by mistake. As soon as the sound of fireballs was audible, Jason ceased his senseless flailing and hit the ground without a word. He saw how angry Xactyl was. He sure didn’t want to get caught in the crossfire between the two Pokemon, especially when one of the two is angry enough to rip the other’s head off. |

The Sandshrew ignored the human's cries and continued to fling sand until, finally, the Axew howled as sand entered its eye. Satisfied with that, the Pokemon stopped flinging sand only to realize that the Axew was still going to go through with its attack. A small yelp was audible before the Pokemon made itself small using another Defense Curl; luckily none of the attacks hit it. Feeling much more confident because the Axew failed to properly use the Dragon attack, the Mouse jumped to its feet and fired a line of Poison Stings at the Dragon- type in hopes that the attack would land. If not, then the Sandshrew would just have to use Sand-Attack again to ensure it doesn't get it. |

As the fireballs flew towards it’s opponent, Xactyl‘s vicious efforts to rub the sand out of it‘s eyes finally succeeded. It eyed the Sandshrew in the Defense Curl, growling ferociously. Attacking it now would be a waste of energy, so it stood there staring down the Pokemon until it finally came out. As soon as it did, the Dragon dashed in it’s direction, malice showing clear in it’s eyes. The plan was to nail it with a Dual Chop at close range. Xactyl didn’t take into account the possibility that the Sandshrew would start attacking from long range. This threw a bit of a wrench in the Axew’s plans. One of the stings grazed the Pokemon, causing it to grit it’s teeth in pain. It quickly bounced to the side and started to swerve around in order to evade the remainder of the attacks. The wound caused by the Poison Sting was still burning. Not a good sign. Despite this, the headstrong Pokemon continued to push towards it’s opponent. As it reached the end of the pit, Xactyl leaped a pretty incredible height int othe air and over the side of the makeshift trap. It let loose a fearsome battle cry as it drew near the mouse Pokemon. As soon as it was in range, it lashed out at it’s target with a Dual Chop. |

A squeal of joy escaped the Sandshrew as it saw Xactyl get hit by at least one Poison Sting only for the noise to die in its throat as it realized that the Axew was closing the distance between them. Well that couldn't be good. Sure it still had plenty of life left, but that still didn't mean it was willing to take another hit. In an instant, a soft light outlined the Mouse's body as it tensed its muscles. It was prepared to Endure this hit because, at this rate, it would prove to be quite critical. With Endure ready and Counter set, the Sandshrew waited to be hit, and it came swiftly. The Sandshrew cried out in pain as the Dual Chop nailed him right on the head then on the side; luckily the Endure promised to keep it conscious. However, it was the Sandshrew's turn to strike, and the Counter was set off. Double the power of the Dual Chop, the Counter released and a force was sent to Xactyl; sworn to do damage. At this close range, would the Axew be able to dodge without any orders? |

Xactyl grinned in vicious triumph as both of it’s chops nailed it’s target cleanly. It expected the Sandshrew to crumple easily beneath the power of the attacks. However, that wasn’t the case. The Axew’s look of triumph turned to one of surprise as it‘s opponent didn‘t fall to the move as it had expected. In it’s rage, it hadn’t noticed the mouse Pokemon use Endure. Well, this certainly wasn’t going to end well. Jason, finally clearing his eyes up of the debris kicked up by the Sandshrew, jumped up. “Man, that really wasn’t fun,” he mumbled to himself irritably. “I hope I didn’t miss too much of the battle,” he stated, redirecting his attention to the conflict. His brow furrowed as he watched the Dual Chop failed to down the Ground type. It was clear that the Sandshrew was preparing a counter-attack as the small Dragon was paralyzed by confusion. “Xactyl!” he called with authority. “Get away from it! It’s about to attack you back!” Xactyl jumped, turning to face it’s trainer in surprise. When did he manage to recover from the Sand Attack? Then, it quickly returned to the battle at hand. The Axew tried to leap backwards, away from the attack, but the attempt was futile. The strike sent it tumbling back into the pit. Although it did not receive the full-force of the attack, it still received enough to render it unable to go back in for close combat. The scratch left by the Poison Sting continued to burn incessantly, causing Xactyl to growl softly in pain. The dark-red Pokemon felt itself becoming weak. The flames on it’s tusks mirrored this, as they slowly began to die down as well. It managed to stand up, however, albeit slowly and shakily. Xactyl wasn’t ready to let itself lose this one. Rearing it’s head back again, it released another steady stream of blue Dragon Rage-fire in the direction of the Sandshrew. |

The Sandshrew panted heavily as it watched Xactyl trying to escape yet still getting hit. Believing that the battle was at last over, the Pokemon sighed in relief. Too tired to roll away but too weak to dig a hole, the Sandshrew decided to just stand there which proved to be a fatal mistake. It was too late, however, to realize this mistake fot the Axew fired another Dragon Rage at it. There was no escape for the Mouse Pokemon and so it fainted on the spot in the middle of the dragon fire. Jason and Xactyl had won their first battle. ((BP to Xactyl)) |

Xactyl simply stood it’s ground, gasping for breath, as it watched the Sandshrew crumple to the ground. It remained in a defensive position, just in case the final attack didn’t manage to fell it. After a few seconds of observation, it was clear to the small Dragon Pokemon. The battle was over, and it was the victor. Heaving a massive sigh of relief, it dropped it’s guard, and allowed itself to fall onto it’s back. As the Axew claimed victory over it’s opponent, Jason too exhaled deeply, feeling a massive sense of relief. “Whew, that was a close one,” he breathed at a volume too low for Xactyl to hear from that distance. “For a second, I thought he wouldn’t make it. I‘d better congratulate him or something.” Jason walked over to the Pokemon as it fell onto it’s back. Squatting over the dark-red Pokemon, Jason made eye contact with Xactyl. “Not too bad, Xactyl,” he commented calmly. “Good stuff. There are a few things we need to talk about at some point, but I guess that can wait for now.” However, Xactyl only heard about half of it. It was knocked unconscious by the poison. Once Jason noticed the fact that the Axew was out cold, he sighed. “I should get him to a Pokemon center,” he decided. He gently picked the Pokemon up, and, carrying it over his shoulder, continued the trek down the mountain. “Let’s hope we don’t run into any more trouble on this stupid oversized anthill,” he muttered. |
