The days turned into weeks after Jake and his new companion Sawk had left the academy. They spent time getting to know one another as they descended the mountain during the day, and spent time getting to know eachother better when they trained together during the evenings. It quickly became clear to Jake Stark thoug that pokemon need a different kind of training as well. A fight against a wild Graveller made this apparent. Even with Sawk's type advantage, his moves still lacked the proper skill and technique to end the foe quickly and without trouble. They defeated their opponent, but Jake would not count this as a victory. A battle won on luck is a loss all the same. The two came to a secluded clearing, a large deep blue pond teemed with skittish water pokemon as the waterfall behind it churned. Sending a fine cool mist in the air. The trees surrounding the grove were thick, old, and sturdy. Perfect for hardening ones knuckles and the grass was peppered with numerous dense gray stones. Jake had a good feeling about this place. The two camped out under the stars while Jake told Sawk stories, and he replied with solemn nods and an occasional 'Sawk'. It wasn't long untill the two fell asleep. "Sawk?" The azure humanoid replied shaking his sleeping trainer. He knew what the two came here to do and he was excited at the prospect of getting stronger. "Sawk." He said again growing a little louder. Jake stirred but did not wake. When his pokemon called out a third time and his trainer just groaned the Sawk used a wake-up slap to rouse him from his sleep. Jake was awake now, his head throbbing from his pokemons slap. "Alright! Alright! I'm up man!" He said scratching his head, stretching and yawning. The sun still hid behind the high peak of Mount Stella, meaning its warmth had yet to reach them. Perfect conditions to train. Jake stripped down, and with his Sawk dove into the pond. The water was cool like ice and the shock sucked the breath from both of them, but they began swimming nonetheless. The two swam in circles around the pond, keeping pace. Never faltering. Soon they were both sweating in the cold, blue, water. And both had lost count of how many laps they'd swam although it had to be more than a couple hundred. Exhausted, Jake climbed out of the pond and sat on a flat, smooth rock underneath the waterfall. Sawk followed suit. "Were going to meditate here, Jet." Jake started, calling his Sawk by the named he'd given it. "To help hone our focus. To calm our minds. And to give our bodies a chance to rest...we've only begun today, Jet. And tommorrow we will do the same thing. And the next day. And the day after that." He told his Sawk who just listened and nodded. The two closed their eyes and began their steady, rythmic breathing as the cold water from the falls crashed down on their bodies. Jake had lost track of time under the waterful. He wasn't sure how much time had passed but it had to be a few hours because the sun stood high in the sky. He gently roused the blue pokemon from his meditation and the two walked out from under the waterfall, sopping wet and wrinkled. Once he was dry again, Jake donned his clothes. He brought Jet to a large, titan of a tree and looked at his pokemon, who gave him its undivided attention. "You're fast, Jet, and strong. If you can master the art of close combat I don't think there's anyone that can stand in our way. I want you to practice against this tree." Jake told his pokemon. "Sawk!" Jet cried, bowing to his trainer. Very soon after he turned facing the tree did a racous stir up. The sounds were harsh, hollow sounding as each strike landed against the old tree. FWAP! CRACK! THUD! FWOP! FWOP! FWOOOP! The sounds echoed out throughout the clearing and the rest of the mountain with hardly any delay between one and the next as fists and feet collided with the tree. After a couple of minutes the Sawk stopped and began panting. "Sa..sawk." it said looking to his trainer for approval. Jake Stark smiled "very good!" He said impressed. Anyone else hitting a tree like this that hard would have shattered bone on the first strike, but his Sawk just seemed winded. "Catch your breath and do it again" Jet replied with an affirmative cry and soon began again. FWAP! CRACK! THUD! FWOP! FWOP! FWOOP! The cycle repeated many times, over and over. Along with hundreds of repititions of beating his hand against the one of the many stones that littered the grove. Despite giving it all his effort Jet's brick break had only managed to put a crack in the dense rock. He also only managed to hit the makeshift targets suspended from tree branches a few times out of hundreds of tries using his high jump kick. The rest of the times he crashed, tumbling to the ground. This worried Jake but he was impressed as his Sawk, though obviously disheartened and a little hurt, got up and tried again and again. He was begining to see why Sawk was chosen for him, the pokemon was too much like him to deny. The two spent what seemed like months in the clearing, making steady progress each day. Starting out their training the same way everyday, finishing it the same way everynigt. Mostly by eating whatever they managed to forage in the forest or catch in the pond. Jake had made a training exercise of wading into the pind and making Jet tighten his focus to reach in and snatch a fish from the water so the two could eat. After days of focusing their energies under the waterfall the feat was easy enough and they had fish aplenty. They swam again in the mornings, their laps reaching so high a count that they just measured the passing hours and used them to judge a good enough workout, soon their conditiong was enough that neither was out of breath by the end. Jake had decided that this day they would test their progress. He took Jet to the old tree, which was now speckled with dents and abrasions from the myriad of punches and kicks thrown into it. "You know what to do, Jet. Close combat!" "Saaaaawk!" The pokemon cried. FWAP! CRACK! THUD! FWOP! FWOP! FWOOOP! Jake looked on amazed as bits of wood and bark flew from the leviathans trunk. Jet beat the tree relentlessly then stopped. Planted his feet and jumped a little in the air turning a full 360 degrees and sending a roundhouse kick flying. The sound of splintering wood filled the air as the old tree slowly began to topple over. Jake grinned and nodded his approaval. They then moved on finding a large rock. Jet dropped into it's sitting stance in front of it. "Let's see your Brick Break." Jake said folding his arms. The Sawk nodded and flattened his hand out swining it into the rock with a loud SNAP! When he lifted his hand all that was there was a crack. Jake smiled encouragingly, "its ok dude, I know you can do it. Try again...focus this time. Remember our training." "Sawk" Jet replied. He took a couple of seconds to steady his breathing and stretched out his fingers making a knife hand. The Sawk raised his blue hand above his head and brought it down with a loud "SAWK!" Which was said so quick it could have been mistaken for a breath. The rock shattered into hundreds of pieces, leaving only a cloud of dust in its place. Jake scooped up the bits of rubble and tossed in two berries into his hand. He grinned at Jet, this was his final test. He had seen his pokemon jump a clear 9 feet in the air and take out targets with his high jump kick. But that seemed hit or miss, devastating to a potential opponent if it hit but more to Jet if it didn't. Jake wanted to see what he could do with his double kick. They'd only recently begun working on it and had gotten it so fast the the kicks seemed a blue and white blur as Jet's leg went up. Jake wanted to know f they were as acurate as they were fast. "Ok Jet, use focus energy to zero in. Then when I toss them up in the air hit only the berries with your double kick." He instructed the Sawk, who nodded. Jet calmed his breathing, made it steady, feeling and guiding the flow of energy evenly around his body as he'd practiced for so long under the waterfall. Jake smiled once more and tossed the fistfull od gravle and the two berries in the air. The Sawk's eyes, sharp from all the times he zeroed in on quick moving fish caught the crimson berries as they rose with the rocks and locked onto them as they began to fall in what seemed like slow motion to him. Jake looked on as the blur of blue and whit snapped into the air, seeking out the two berries and missing everything execpt them, causing them to explode in a brilliant flash of red juice as the blue feet collided with them. There was hardly any time spent between the two blows and as the rocks fell to the ground Jake smiled once again. He knew that Jet was ready now. |

((Hey, man, the longer the better!)) Possibly drawn by all the noise, a jolly-looking man was drawn to the scene of their training. He strolled over, stick in hand and backpack on back, and his two small pokemon running behind him. The first was a Growlithe with a little bow tie, and the second was a Rhyhorn with a pink ribbon tied around her neck. "Hello there!" he said, his booming voice carrying over with no trouble. He waved his stick-free hand in the air. "What a fine specimen of a Sawk you have there. I was very impressed by that berry display. Have you considered Contests?" He let out a rather loud belly laugh at this point, belly being the operative word, and when he had finished amusing himself he cleared his throat and spoke again. "What do you say you pitch it against one of my darling companions here? I'll even let you pick which one." |

Jake looked startled. He had been alone here for months and no one disrupted their training until now. Jet looked a bit perturbed that someone and interupted them but Jake's demeanor quickly calmed him down. "Thank you, we have worked hard to become this way.' He called back. The hiker laughed again, his booming thunderous laugh echoing far out. "I feat contests hold no sway with me, but I do accept your challenge. I choose both of your pokemon. One after the other or both at the same time it is up to you' he called to the burly man issuuing him a challenging grin. |

"Ah, fantastic fighting spirit you have in you, young man!" the hiker bellowed pleasantly. "Go on, Ria, my darling, you're up." The Rhyhorn trotted up to the centre of the battlefield and let out a little roar in Jet's direction to show him she meant business. "Age before beauty, so I shall go first," he said cheerily. "Ria, start off with a Scary Face to slow him down." He was clearly a battler of some experience, and knew that while Jet had the advantage, his Rhyhorn could very well win if he chipped away some of the opponent's strengths. Ria's eyes glowed and an enormous cackling face was projected into the sky right in front of the Sawk. "And Rock Blast, my darling!" Three glowing yellow rings formed around the Rhyhorn's body as she concentrated, and slowly they formed into rocks that grew larger and larger, and flung themselves towards Jet one at a time. |

Jet staggered back a bit, taken by surprise from the scary face. It had indeed rattled him a bit as the hiker had counted on. "Don't let that slow you down Jet! Get passed those rocks and give that ryhorn a good low sweep!" Jake called out encouragingly. Although not nearly as experienced as this man before him , jake had a natural affinity for fights and he knew that a low sweep would cripple the alread slow rock pokemon. Effectively nutralizing the oppenents scary face advantage. "Sawk!" Jet replied and began chargin forward straight into the three hulking rocks. He leapt in the air flipping over the first one. Then in a dazzling display of agility and acrobatics landed on the second, planting on it and kicking off sending him hurtling straight towards the third. Jet bellowed and in mid stride brought a knife-hand down on the third boulder pulverizing tit with a brick break. It seemed to not even slow his advance as he closed the distance between him and the ryhorn. Once close enough Jet leaped into the air and spun a full 360 degrees, his leg outstretched on his way down attempting to knock the pokemons feet from under her. |

"Ria!" the man called, but she was far too slow to move out of the way. Luckily, having such short, podgy little legs, there wasn't a very long distance for her to fall to hit the ground chin-first. She grunted, screwing her eyes up in pain as she hit the floor, and looking severely disheartened that her attacks seemed to have done no damage. "Tail Whip," he ordered, and she heavily pushed herself to her feet and waggled herself cutely at him, hopefully lowering his defences. "Then go for a Drill Run." She blinked a couple of times and the horn on her face started to spin, slowly at first, but then at a blinding speed as she charged, huffing and bellowing and hoping that her Scary Face had done enough that he couldn't dodge this one. |

"Look out!" Jake cried. Jet tried to move and normally would have been able to dodge the technique had it not been for the scary face. It was all he could do to grab the opponent's horn a hair's breadth away from his chest. The charging ryhorn's momentum made the Sawk's blue feet dig into the ground. The ryhorn wasted no time in lifting it's head, causing the grasping pokemons body to rotate with the horn. He was strong but it was too much for Jet to hold on and the force of gravity sent him flying through the air spinning like a top. He collided into a tree with a loud crash and sent it toppling over. Both trainers looked on in anticipation. Jake bit his lip,/his first battle wasn't going as well as he'd hoped but he wouldn't give up and he knew Jet wouldn't either. Sure enough as the dust and leaves settled the Sawk got to his feet. He shook the dizziness from his head, and brushed some dust off his gi. He winced a little as he turned his shoulder in wide circles before sitting down into his fighting stance. Arms up, palms facing inward, he grinned at the ryhorn flexing his fingers into "bring it" motion a few times. "Yeeaah!" Jake cheered "that's my boy!" He yelled laughing triumphantly. |

"Hm!" the man said. "Very good, young man. But can you survive this?" Ria was panting now as she skidded to a stop and tried to catch her breath. She looked to her trainer for the next move. "Megahorn!" he called. With a happy cry, the Rhyhorn stomped over to Jet, her horn glowing, aiming to ram it with all her strength into his flesh. |

'Heh, let's make this interesting. Knock it into the air Jet, and make it high' he yelled. Jet stole a qucik glance at Jake to let him know he understood. He then turned his attention back to the blindly charging Ryhorn. Although rushing him, it was moving very slow and the Sawk had plenty of time to plan out his attack. He waited for the pokemon to get close, then he ducked down and grabbed the tree that was just knocked over by his flailing body. With a great deal of effort he hoisted it up and swung it with a grunt, catching the charging pokemon in the face and transferring all its forward momentum up and away. "Yeeeeaaaahhh! Home run!' Jake cried out smiling at the hiker's stunned reaction. 'Alright Jet this is crucial, like we practiced use focus energy! Then hit it with a high jump kick!' The Sawk drew in a steady breath locking onto the ryhorn. He watched it reach the peak of it's flight and begin falling in slow motion, that's when he started forward. Slow at first then a full sprint. "SaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAWWWWWKKKK!" Jet cried as he jumped into the air locking his leg out into a flying side kick. Flying like an arrow towards the falling ryhorn planning to catch it on its way down. |

((Hey, it's kind of ok this time because this is just a random NPC, but you can't control other people's characters. This means you can't tell me that the Rhyhorn flew into the air and you can't tell me the hiker had a stunned reaction. Keep that in mind for next time! ^^)) As the Rhyhorn fell, many thoughts went through her mind. If these thoughts had been audible to those in the surrounding area they would have sounded something along the line of, 'Argleplarglemaaaaaarrrghh!' However, had these thoughts been audible AND coherent to those watching the slow-motion descent of the bulky Rock type, the thoughts would have sounded more like, 'Oh! What's this? It seems to be a lot of wind. AN AWFUL LOT, and I don't much like the look of those rocks down there. What if one of them were to break my fall...or neck. I suppose I have to laugh at a time like this; it's not like I have tear-ducts. That Sawk looks like it could cause a fair bit of damage to me, and, would you look at that; it's aiming for my head. I guess I won't have to worry about the rocks. I wonder what I'm eating for dinner. Would a Pokemon centre's dinners be nicer than what I would have otherwise? I guess I'll find out all too soon. Oh, isn't the ground getting terribly close? In case anyone's listening, I'd like you to know that I'd much appreciate a bowl of petunias next to my bed in the Pokemon centre. Thanks." And with that she hit the floor, to be promptly met with a kick in the face by her opponent. She was down. "Oh dear!" the hiker called, his face still flushed with the excitement of the fight. He recalled Ria and then nodded to his little tie-wearing Growlithe, who nodded serenely and then jumped into the battle with a fierce snarl. "Leer and Fire Fang," he ordered, and his pokemon obeyed. |

Jet was taken aback by the fearocity of the little orange tiger stripped pokemon. They locked gazes for a split second, long enough for the Sawk to stand petrified as the Growlithe bit into his leg, breathing fire as his teeth sunk into flesh. "Saaawk!" Jet howled in pain and tried to shake the little puppy off. Jake watch orrified as the pokemon flailed. Finally the Sawk managed to shake the Growlithe loose. "Get him with a double kick, Jet!" The Sawk howled and flung out two kicks in rapid succession, but with a charred and chewed up leg the damage couldn't have been too great. It was more just to give him some time to think and he did a back handspring to put some distance between the two. "I know it hurts Jet but you've got to focus. Use focus energy to help you out, then give him a leer of your own!" he called out. The Sawk steadied his breathing once more, dwinding some of the pain from his leg so he could fight still. Then he glared at the puppy pokemon hoping he would have a similar effect that it had on him. ((Sorry lol i appologize...figured it would have been a cool set up lol)) |

The Growlithe leapt lithely over the Double Kick, the fact that he was fresh to battle giving him the advantage for now, but he was taken by surprise by the Leer and stood there blinking for a moment until his trainer gave him another order. "Reversal!" the hiker yelled, the smile never faltering from his face. "How fantastic this is; what a rush I'm getting, boy!" The Growlithe growled and then leapt forwards, little white orbs appearing around his body. This attack may have been a little early, but his trainer seemed to have confidence in it: the Sawk was injured enough for the move to do something, at least, and this would ensure his upper hand if it worked. |

The Sawk made a startled face as the Growlithe hurtled towards him the orbs spinning. "Were not outta this yet!" Jake called to the burly mountain man. "Jet! Counter that hit!" Jet nodded and flexed his body holding his arms up waiting for the Growlithe to strike him so he could parry the hit and land a mid-air 180 back kick while the new opening was created. |

"Switch," the man said quickly, "scrap Reversal, use Flamethrower!" Unfortunately, the Growlithe had gone too far to stop now, and slammed into the readied Sawk only to be thrown away again. He rolled over onto his side, and then, still growling, stood up and belatedly shot a torrent of red-hot flames in the direction of his bright blue opponent. |

Jet let out a stratled cry and barely had time to cross his arms in front of him before the the flames came crashing in. The knocked hm back but he stood his ground face twisted in pain from the intense heat. The searing became too much for him so he dropped to his back letting the jetstream fly over him. As it stopped he worked himself to his feet his gi covered with blackened burn marks. "You ok Jet?" He asked concerned. "Sawk!" Jet replied, he was burnt but not terribly bad, he was still able to fight. "Alrighty then use bulk up!" Jake cried. The sawk responded by tensing up his muscles making him look bigger, tougher, and more menacing. "Now let him come to you Jet, use bide and we can win this one!" "Sawk!" Jet cried. As he sat into his stance locking eyes on the growlithe, he would be ready. |

"Terribly sorry, but that move was a mistake, m'boy!" the hiker boomed, then laughed heartily. His Growlithe tilted his head at the puffed-up blue pokemon, and waited for instructions. "Flame Wheel, Fire Fang, Flame Burst!" the man ordered. With a yip, the Growlithe spewed flame from his mouth and rolled into it, becoming a wheel of fire that aimed to crash into the unmoving Sawk. He would then uncurl, his mouth aflame, and attempt to latch onto the opponent's body with fiery sharp teeth, and then to finish it, while still locked onto the Sawk's flesh, he would let loose an enormous explosion of fire from deep within his body. The enemy would never survive this. |

All three moves of the combo connected and jet fell to his knees with a yelp of pain. He tried to get back to his feet and he did...but only for a few seconds he. He swayed and then began to fall before a red stream returned him to an empty pokeball. Jake bowed low to the duo. "That was a good battle! That dog is very strong...where did you come across it?' He asked intrigued. |

"Good work!" he called to his Growlithe, and the thing leapt up into his arms to lick him on the cheek before bounding back down to sit loyally by his feet. "I captured him when I was hiking through the volcanoes around Warupt's prong, do you know it?" He got out a little kit and went about healing his pokemon tenderly, then straightened up and saluted the boy. "Thank you for that refreshing battle," he said, "I feel pumped enough to hike for the rest of the day now!" |
