After defeating Spike in the three versus three battle against his Poochyena, Absol and Vaporeon, Maxulus got out of the Gym. With his badge in his case, he was finally happy. He had just gained his very first Gym Badge and all that happened thanks to his pokemon. If Gabite did not put up a hard battle like that, he would not be able to emerge victorious at all. However, after a while the trainer decided to stop thinking about it. That belonged to the past. Now, he had to concentrate on training in order to get his second badge. If he relaxed just because he got a single badge he should be ashamed of himself. He had to train...

And so, with training in his mind, the trainer walked out of the Gym. He had figured out a few ways to train his pokemon... A few ways that could be more than useful to him for his second Gym Battle and his battles with other trainers he happened to encounter on his journey.

Matt was sitting on a bench nearby, a big stupid grin on his face. He swallowed the last few bites of the cheeseburger he'd been eating and wiped his hands off as he watched someone else exit the gym, looking pretty pleased.

"You just win?" he asked the boy, standing up. His three pokemon were all out of their balls. Dancer sniffed around for scraps on the floor and Pyrite prodded Titan to try to wake him up, but the Lairon snoozed on. "Yeah, don't let that get you cocky. Spike's pretty easy." He yawned and stretched obnoxiously, and strolled over the boy.

"Now... if you were to beat me, that'd be a whole different story. What do you think? Or are you scared to have a real battle?" He grinned, teeth flashing, and his Deerling rolled his eyes behind him.

"Pretty easy?" Maxulus said with a surprised face. He did not know whether he should believe the man or not. However, he still knew that he had managed to defeat Spike and get his badge. He had a badge that belonged to him and so even if his opponent was easy or not, he did not care.

Then, as soon as he listened to the man's challenge for a battle, with a smile on his face Maxulus responded "Well.. What makes you believe I am scared? Of course I will accept a battle with you. Hmph.". The trainer did not know the man but the way he acted definitely made him want to battle him...

In no time, the trainer took a position. He picked up a pokeball from his pockets. The pokeball contained Weedle, a pokemon that was used only in his battle with Spike. He said "I am relying on you Weedle! Stand by for battle!" as he threw the pokeball and called the pokemon for a battle.

Matt grinned as the boy sent out his first pokemon without the need for any more cajoling. "Oh, a Weedle, I'm so scared," he snickered. "Dancer, you're up first."

The Deerling trotted with his head held high up to his place in their makeshift battlefield. Already a couple of people had gathered around to watch, as they tended to do when people were having battles in crowded places.

"Dancer, get straight in there - use Jump Kick!" The Deerling took a deep breath, making his chest puff out, and then coiled his muscles, and released, sailing through the air and hoping to land some damage on the little Bug type.

The trainer was surprised by the quick reactions of the man that challenged him. That man got into the battle quickly. It was really surprising. He did not even take his time to introduce himself. However, that did not matter. What mattered was to win the battle against the Deerling. With a determined look on his face, the trainer pointed towards the sky. He said "Weedle! Use String Shot to avoid that Jump Kick.

"Weedle!" the pokemon said and nodded. It looked around and it tracked a stone. Then, it pointed towards it with its head and launched a string that hit the rock and so it pulled itself towards the rock, dodging the Jump Kick a second before it hit and from a very short distance. That Deerling. It was so fast for Weedle! The pokemon was lucky enough to dodge because it was refreshed and the battle had just started. The next time, it wouldn't be so refreshed to be able to dodge...

As soon as he noticed what happened, Maxulus was surprised. That pokemon. It was very dangerous. He had to attack it directly in order to deal with it. Mere seconds after Weedle dodged, the trainer said "Use Poison Sting!" and Weedle launched a poisonous attack towards Deerling in an attempt to strike it.

"Oh," Matt said, as the Weedle pulled itself out of the way. He raised his eyebrows. "That was actually pretty cool." He scratched his head, and Dancer wheeled around to glare at the little bug type that had made it crash down hard onto the ground, hurting himself instead of the opponent.

Then when the super effective poison attack dug itself into his skin, Matthew's eyes widened, but the Deerling nodded at him to let him know he wasn't poisoned. Yet.

"Ok, Dancer. Looks like we were a bit cocky. Let's try a Camouflage."

The Deerling concentrated for a moment, and then his skin appeared to ripple. Ground type, due to the soft earth he stood on. Matt shrugged, at least he didn't have the weakness to the Poison Sting any more. "Now Sand Attack, that should slow him down." Dancer turned around and scrabbled sand towards the Weedle.

"What the?!" the trainer said, surprised with the opponent's move. That was pretty smart. Now, Weedle attacks would be much weaker than before. He was in big trouble. With Deerling having a ground type, it was very difficult now to cause damage with a weak pokemon like Weedle. And on top of that, the Sand-Attack hit it, making its attacks slower and innacurate. "No! Weedle!" the trainer said with a worried look. The pokemon was now with its guard open and with Deerling's strength it would probably take much damage from a single hit... What would happen to the little bug and poison type pokemon?

"I'm Matthew, by the way," Matt said, jabbing himself with his thumb.

"Dancer," he said, turning his attention to the Deerling. "Faint Attack, go."

The deer pokemon nodded, and, shrouded in a swirling mist of dark energy he disappeared, then reappeared suddenly just beside the Weedle, attempting to slam all of his weight into the smaller pokemon.

"NO!" the trainer shouted as he looked at his pokemon getting struck by his opponent's Deerling. Weedle was send several meters backwards and flapped on the ground as it was moving because of the strength of the move that struck it until it stopped by hitting on a rock. That Faint Attack. It caused much damage indeed. However, the pokemon was determined to win. It had lost a battle recently so it did not want to disappoint its trainer. With a smile on its face and with a few scratches on its body, Weedle said "Weedle!" before it started shining. Weedle was evolving!

Just like Gible in its battle against Spike's Vaporeon, Weedle started evolving. Its body changed completely. It was now surrounded by a yellow coocoon and it had strange eyes that looked angry looking. It said "Kakuna!" with a serious face, before it got ready to resume the battle.

"You evolved... Amazing..." the trainer said before pointing towards Deerling. Then, he said "Now, Kakuna! Strike with Poison Sting!" and the pokemon launched the poisonous attack to the deer pokemon in an attempt to damage and poison it. He hoped that his strategy would be successful.

Dancer was struck by the poison needle, which buried itself under his skin. He shuddered sickeningly, and stopped moving, looking at the ground.

"Damn," Matt muttered, then called out to his pokemon. "Are you ok?" The Deerling sucked in a deep breath and managed to nod. He was poisoned.

"Ok, don't give up now. Use Double Kick!" The deer pokemon cantered up to the cocoon and turned around, aiming to slam its back hooves one after the other on the opponent's hard shell.

"Hmph!" the trainer said as he looked at his pokemon poisoning his opponent's Deerling. That move was really cool. With this, he could have the upper hand in the battle. Eventually, if Kakuna managed to hold its own in the battle, Deerling would fall from the poison and the bug and poison type would emerge victorious.

Then, as soon as he noticed that Deerling was going to go with a Double Kick, he smiled. He thought "Double Kick is weak in bug and poison types so it will not do a thing at all. If I echance Kakuna's defenses with Harden, then I can endure most of the damage.". As soon as he thought that he said "Kakuna! Use Harden!"

The coocoon agreed. As Deerling moved its legs in order to strike with the two kicks, the pokemon hardened its body and echanced the defense, getting much more endurant than before. The pokemon did not fall from the attack and that was satisfying.

Afterwards, Maxulus said "Now, strike with Poison Sting again!" and Kakuna launched some more poison towards Deerling to cause some damage.

Matt frowned deeply. Was his pokemon about to be beaten by a Kakuna? That would be mortifying. The poison was setting in quickly, though, and Dancer was gasping and wheezing and staggering about. The second Poison Sting made him cry out in pain, his eyes watering.

"Don't be such a drama king," his trainer sighed. "I know you've never been poisoned before, but it's not gonna kill you." The pokemon turned to him and fixed him with doe eyes, and Matt sighed deeper this time. "Fine! But you owe me." He pulled out his pokeball. "C'mere."

Dancer clopped embarrassedly back to his trainer's side where he was given a special berry to ease the poisoning and returned to his pokeball.

"Ok, so I guess we lost that one. But you won't be defeating Titan with a little Kakuna!" He kicked his Lairon, who snorted and woke up, looking around. When he realised they were battling, he waggled his back half happily and clomped over to take his place in the arena.

"Titan, show it what you're made of with Iron Head!" The Lairon obeyed this command, running over to the Kakuna, his spiky metal head glinting.

Seeing Lairon moving towards Kakuna, the trainer was worried. That thing... It sure looked like a beast. It would be difficult to deal with. Unaware of the pokemon's strength, the trainer pointed towards it and said "Kakuna, use String Shot to slow it down!" and the coocoon pokemon did so, in an attempt to slow it down. The attack was moving towards Lairon but it was too late to hit...

As Kakuna used the String Shot, the pokemon was struck by the Iron Head and was sent flying several meters. That attack caused extreme damage. The pokemon fell unconscious. Maxulus said "Wow... That was... powerful..." with a worried look. However, he took a smile on his face and said "Anyway, I can deal with it. Gabite! Stand by for battle!".

Afterwards, he threw a pokeball and the land shark pokemon appeared. Maxulus said "Use Sand Tomb!" he said and the pokemon threw a large and powerful ball of sand to Lairon that would cause it great damage due to its type and would trap it in the battlefield as well as it would cause it damage as the time passed.

"Metal Burst!" Matt said quickly. The Lairon was flinching as the sharp sand granules rattled against his steely exterior, but when his trainer issued this unconventional order, he looked up, snapped his jaws once or twice, and a powerful shock wave burst forth from his body, sending the sand away to trickle to the floor.

Matthew winked at the other boy. "Gonna have to wake up pretty early to catch Titan like that." He turned to his Lairon, who was slightly going against his words by clattering around nervously in his armour at the sight of the big Gabite opponent. He cleared his throat. "Uh, hey, now use Take Down!" he ordered. The Lairon swallowed and then began to charge again.

"Dodge with Dig!" Maxulus commanded his pokemon and Gabite opened a hole in the ground in order to hide itself and avoid the attack as Lairon moved towards it. It managed to escape from it successfully by digging a hole in the ground and escaping. However, the pokemon would be in trouble as long as it stayed on the ground. Lairon could simply go with an Earthquake attack and strike it to cause it much damage... And so, the pokemon got out afterwards, right behind Lairon in order to strike with the Dig attack that would be ultra effective.

"Argh, Titan!" Matt cried as the Gabite disappeared underground. "Uhh, dodge it!"

Titan turned around to pout at his trainer. How would he dodge an attack if he had no idea where it was going to come from next? He instead started to do a very strange walk where he lifted his legs up to head height every time he stepped. It was both adorable and hilarious, and Matthew began to laugh too hard to give any real orders.

Fine! Titan huffed. He would just have to figure out a strategy by himself. Otherwise the Dig would knock him pretty hard; it would be difficult to recover from that. He sat down on his rear end and his face twisted into thought. Then he stood up again and started to pace. Then there was a rumbling in the ground.

Then the world went very small.

"Argh, Titan!" Matt cried, not for the first time in the last ten seconds. He sighed, looking down at his trainer... wait... since when had he been double his height? He reached up to scratch his head in thought, not realising that he now had arms. The Gabite popped up, meanwhile, right between his legs. "Titan, Headbutt!"

With confusion, the Aggron bent over forwards to look through his legs at the now quite small Gabite. He tilted his head, and then attempted to smash his skull straight into the Dragon type.

"That's nothing!" Maxulus said with a very serious face while pointing towards the Aggron that had just evolved in a similar way his Kakuna did. If the attack hit Gabite, it would take some damage. The trainer had to do something. He said with a determined face. "Use Sandstorm to increase your evasion and keep with Dig's strike!".

In an instant, Gabite moved its arm that was not concentrating on the Dig attack and a powerful sandstorm brewed around Gabite. It's Sand Veil ability was activated. With it under effect, Aggron's Headbutt slipped from Gabite's body and the pokemon dodged. Maxulus' strategy was good... "Now strike!" he said and the pokemon moved the arm that was concentating the ground type move in an attempt to strike Aggron and cause it much damage.

Matt's face screwed up in concentration as he looked on to the battle. Then he snapped his fingers.

"Protect," he ordered as the Dig attack shot from the ground. Titan flinched, but the protective barrier was summoned just in time to deflect the Gabite's attack. That wasn't to say that he wouldn't just do it again, though. He needed a better strategy. Or a strategy at all.

"Iron Tail," he ordered. The Aggron pivoted his new bulk around uneasily, tail swinging and glowing bright white, hopefully all set to smack the Gabite hard around the face, maybe even sending him flying.

"Damn it!" were Maxulus' words who did not expect Aggron to use Protect on the attack. That really caught him off guard. As soon as the steel type pokemon surrouned itself with the protective shield, the dig attack was deflected after it hit the shield and it avoided the damage and on top of that Aggron went with an Iron Tail attack that caused great damage on Gabite. Despite that, though, Gabite was still able to battle as the steel type attack was not very effective against it.

"Okay. Time to get serious Gabite." the trainer said with a determined look on his face. "Use Sand Tomb quickly!" he completed and Gabite went with the ground type attack that would cause much damage due to being ultra effective, that would constantly damage Aggron every turn and would prevent it from switching.
