'Muddy' waters

Micky landed with a thud in the undergrowth. "Thanks" he said to the Dragonite before it spread its wings and flew off.

He had been on Trinxit Beach and seen the dragon pokemon staring out over the ocean like a stone sentinel. When he had first approached he thought it may have been a statue but sure enough, it was real. "Umm... Hi," he said nervously, "I'd like to go somewhere with water." The Dragonite gave him a look. It was obvious that it thought him stupid. It looked out over the water once again. "Oh. Yeah, right." How am I meant to talk to this pokemon? Like it's owner, or more like I'm placing an order for a burger? he thought to himself. "Some different water?" The Dragonite gave a weary sigh and gestured for Micky to climb onto its back. As he held on Micky said, "By the way, my name is Mi- WOAH!" and didn't get to finish his sentence as he was whisked away to 'different water'.

Micky was still spead-legged on the ground, taking in his surroundings. When he had asked for water he hadn't expected a creepy looking lake in a creepy looking forest. The ground looked muddy and, to be honest, so did the sky. As did the trees. Mud, mud everywhere, nor any splodge in which to sink he chuckled at his own, obvioulsy, brilliant wit. He stood up and looked around, he had been wrong. There was a very large patch of what he had thought to be mud which turned out to be a body of water. It must be reflecting the sky he pondered as me walked over to it, dipped his hand bleow the surface, and, as he pulled his hand out, let the water water slide through his fingers.

Pulling the pokeball away from his belt he said, "Come out and have a peak, Pudge." The plump Pidgey appeared, letting out a little cry of surprise as the talons on its feet sank below the surface of the mud. Micky laughed. "Don't be scared, it isn't deep. Now, fly up into the air. Let's see if there's anyone or anything to be seen around here."

"Arrghh!!"

The cry rang out through the trees, and several bird types exploded into the sky in fright.

A little way off stood a teenage boy, hands clutched to his head, eyes wide. Just beside him stood an Aggron. A very short one, it seemed, as he just came up to around his trainer's shoulders. Yes, Titan was stuck in the mud. His 4000lb body had been sucked straight in before you could say 'What a beautiful day it's not'. Which, incidentally, is exactly what Matt had not finished saying before Titan had sunk through the mud.

"It's ok, buddy, I'm gonna get you out of there," he said, and took his pokemon's head in both hands and pulled... himself under. "Crap," he muttered, as he stood waist-deep, unable to move.

Pudgey let out a coo and flew towards the boy and the sinking Aggron. Micky had heard him shout and seen him halve in size in a way that made the Aggron look as if it weren't disproportionately small. What a nice trainer, doing that for his pokem- "Ohhh..." he said in realisation, and ran towards them to help.

"Hey there. Having fun? I haven't played stuck-in-the-mud since I was a youngster, and I never played in quite so literal a way. Since you both seem to be stuck, mind telling me who the stickee is?" he said, raising his hand to sheild his eyes as he mockingly looked around for more game-players.

"Oh, yes, haha, very funny," Matthew said, shooting a glare at this newcomer. "Would you mind helping me out?" He held up a hand that was so covered in thick, gloopy mud that it didn't particularly look like a human appendage any more. He raised his eyebrows, waiting for the other boy to take his horrible excuse for a hand and help him out.

Meanwhile, Titan giggled away at the situation - a rather strange thing for an Aggron to do, it's true - and waited for somebody to give him back the use of his enormous legs.

"Run for your lives, it's the beast from the tar pits!" Micky called out as he began to run off. He turned around before he'd gone more than two meters and headed back to the boy. He streched out his hand. "C'mon, let's get you out of there" he said to the boy in the mud, and then to Pudgey, "Hey, grab hold of my bag with your claws and help me lift this guy out."

Together, Micky and Pudgey pulled the teeneager out of the mud. It wasn't easy or clean. The mud on his hands meant that Micky's grasp on his hand slipped a few times, meaning that evryone involved ended up in the mud time after time. On the fifth attempt the young lad was pulled free. "Any plan on how we're going to pull your Aggron out?"

"Thanks," he said grumpily, wiping muddy hands on even muddier trousers. "This stuff is disgusting. Is it really necessary for it to smell so bad?"

He stepped out of the danger zone and then put his hands on his hips and inspected his large metal friend. "Hum," he said. "Got a tow truck on you?" He laughed quietly at his own hilarious joke, and then scratched his head, therefore smearing stuff all over his hair. "Anyway, I'm Matthew. It's good you were so close by, otherwise I could've been there for hours. Or days!" He didn't want to think about it particularly.

He eyed the boy's Pidgey with confusion. "Dude," he said. "I think it's diet time for someone."

Micky laughed. "I guess it's to discourage people jumping into it." He stuck his tongue out. Stanging with mis muddy hands on his muddy hips he pondered. After a while he said, "You know that tow-truck idea? I've got something really similar. How about we gat an even bigger pokemon to help Aggron out of the mud and if that one gets stuck we can use one that's even bigger than that. How does that sound? Or, on the other hand, you can just get it back into the pokeball. But if you want hilarity to ensue then I would recommend plan A"

Having said this he started to rub his hands over his stomach. "Yeah, I guess I could do with losing a few pounds. Any gyms in Aerei?"

Matt's eyes widened and his face paled. But then it immediately scrunched up again into a scornful glare. "I knew that! I was just testing you," he cried. And then, realising how childish that sounded, he pulled a face.

With a sigh, he pulled out his pokeball and returned his Aggron. The mud that surrounded him filled the gap quickly with a 'schloop' noise, and all was well again.

"Aww, now I miss him," Matt said, looking at the ball before pocketing it. "Gyms here? Uh, yeah, there are ten I think. Is that what you meant?"

"Only 10? I thought there would be more, given the size of this island." Micky paused. "Hang on," he continued, "do you mean league gyms or exercising gyms? Because I don't know I've you've met Pudgey over here but he's in no fit state for taking on gym leaders."

He stared at Pudgey, wodering how it was that a pokemon like that ever managed to fly. He turned back to Matthew. "So, what brings you to this neck of the sludge?"

After taking a good long look at the Pidgey in question, Matthew's face cracked into a smile. "I wouldn't know," he said. "Is he well-trained? Are you even a trainer?"

He looked at the balls clipped onto his belt, then looked around. Why was he here? He tried to think. "I know I got really drunk," he started, resting a fingertip on his chin. "And then I woke up in mid-flight, and the Dragonite dropped me here. I've been trying to find one to take me home for a couple of hours, and I got lonely so I let Titan out... and then you came along."

He grinned, pleased at his explanation. "How about you? Why are you here?"

He looked vaguely surprised, and maybe even flattered at his question. "Me? A trainer? Nope. I just wander around with the Pudgster here. Sounds like you had a pretty wild night." he said. "I'm looking for someone, seen anybody about yay high and with all of her fingers?"

He gestured for his chubby little friend to land on his arm and, with a good-natured sigh, he pulled a slightly crusty handkerchief from his breast pocket and began to wipe away the grime and mud from the Pidgey's little claws. Pudgey complied sullenly, holding out his feet like a nobleman to a lowly shoe polisher.

Feeling the strain from the bulk of his bird type, Micky shooed him gently away to circle the area once more.

He turned to Matt and said, "How strong do you fancy you are?"

On being asked whether he had seen someone who fit the other boy's description, he thought for a moment, and then shook his head. "I've seen someone this high with all of her fingers, and I've seen someone that high with only a few. Why? Who have you lost?"

He quietly watched this nice little exchange between trainer and pokemon with a small smile, and then responded to the second question. "I'm strong. I think I'm pretty strong, yeah. Why?" He subtly tensed his muscles, looking innocently towards the lake. As if to prove some kind of point, he picked up a large flat rock and skipped it. It bounced twice and then sank, and the water rippled out.

"Nice throw," said Micky as he watched the stone skim gracefully over the water, "but I think I can manage to beat it." He looked around for a stone of a similar size. As he chose a rock and sized it up he answered Matt, "Oh, really? Hmm... I wouldn't be surprised if she has lost some fingers, she is quite clumsy. She's my sister. Not seen her in a while. Never mind, I'm sure I'll see her soon." As he said this he picked up the rock and felt the smooth sides with his hands as he readied himself.

He whipped his arm out and released the rock as it went flying towards the water, it struck the water with such velocity that Micky was sure it would skim across the water with enough force that it would reach the opposite side of the lake.

It didn't. Instead of skimming of the top of the lake the rock looked as if it had hit a stone wall and sank straight to the bottom.

As the ripples from the sinking stone began to fade out Micky laughed. " I guess I need to work on my throw." He said with smile on his face and scratching the back of his neck with embarassment. He turned to the water and saw that more ripples were appearing, and growing in frequency. "Wha- what?" he stammered. The tip of a yellow head appeared from the water, emerging a little bit before it was submerged again and then rising up more than it had done. Whatever owned the head was clearly stamping forcefully and as whatever it was drew closer Micky could see that its brow was very much furrowed.

A Psyduck emerged head-first from the water. It's face twisted in anger. It had a long scratch going down its bill and one of it's eyes was a milky colour. Micky saw that it was holding a rock that looked remarkably like the one he had just thrown. "Ooops" When the Psyduck was almost completely out of the water is tossed the rock up infront of its face, its good eye glowed red and so did the rock. Micky panicked: "It was him." he said, pointing at Matt. He then whispered, "Sorry." to Matt as the grizzly Psyduck launched the rock with unexpected ferocity at the innocent spectator.

"Aaahhh!" Matt cried, pointing at the rock as it flew towards him. Before it got all the way over, he managed to fumble with his ball and release Titan, who roared menacingly. "You can be my shie-" he started, but they both shushed when Titan squeaked in fright and sank into the thick mud once again.

The rock whistled over the Aggron's metal head and thwacked his trainer in the face, causing him to fall backwards and mumble to himself for a while. His mumblings weren't particularly coherent, until the final two words, which were crystal clear.

"Avenge me!"

Micky would have laughed were it not for the sense of panic he felt without Pudgey to defend him. "Pudge, where are you?" he called out to the sky. Psyduck turned it's attention back to him and growled. "Matt, what do I do if I don't have a pokemon to attack with? Do I just kick the little bugger?" He didn't have time to wait for an answer.

The psyduck took in a deep breath, and unleashed a jet of water at Micky. It hit him square in the face and sent him flying off his feet. "Pudgey!" he yelled, "where the hell are you?" He picked up another rock and chucked it at the Psyduck, hitting it on the head, but instead of causing any real damage just seemed to make it angrier.

"Matt, what are we meant to do? Are you even awake?" He looked at Aggron and offered it a shrug.

Apparently no, he wasn't awake. The rock had been pretty big, to be fair, but it was completely likely that Matthew was taking the opportunity to fit in a sneaky afternoon nap.

Titan, however, came to the rescue. He managed to turn almost 180 degrees in his mud trap, lent forwards, and kicked his back legs to deliver a powerful Mud Slap to the gnarled Psyduck, which slapped it in the face and shocked it for a moment. Clearly it hadn't expected the midget Aggron to join in with his trainer out cold.

With slightly less mud caving him in, Titan managed to pull himself out, his iron tail wagging madly as he looked at Micky, splattering mud everywhere. It looked like he was waiting for an order from the boy while Matt was out of the game.

"Nice one titan." Micky said to his temporary pokemon, "As for you, Pudgey," he called out to the sky above, "you had better get your butt back here and help out."

Psyduck's eye had started glowing red again but Micky couldn't see what it was manipulating with its mind. The horrible squelching sound beside him made him gulp as he realised. Aggron's outline was a glowing red and he was being lifted slowly out of the ground. Micky didin't want to wait to find out what this psychically-inclined duck was capable of doing.

"PUDGE!" he called out once more, and at that point he saw his bird (bird-brained more like he thought) pokemon lollop through the sky towards him. "About time. Now do your thing: Peck the living daylights out of him." And the Pidgey swooped down towards Psyduck.

Psyduck was fully concentrated on lifting Aggron out of the clinging mud. It must have been hard work because even though Psyduck was fully focused on the task at hand it was going very slowly. It must have heard Pudgey when it was about to attak because it turned around, Aggron dropped again, and the one-eyed Psyduck fell over with a splash.

Micky called over to the stuck Aggron, "Do you know any ranged moves for finishing off Ol' Mean Features?"

Titan watched what was going on with some interest, especially when he was lifted out of the squelchy mud. He stayed as still as he could to aid the Psyduck in his charitable quest, but when he was rudely dropped, this time thankfully he managed to use his limbs for long enough to scramble to slightly firmer ground, he glared.

When Micky asked him for ranged moves, he opened his mouth and screwed his eyes shut. Everything was tense, but then Titan sneezed, and then shook his head, turning around to slap a stream of mud towards the Psyduck for the second time. Apparently that was all he was good for in his current - i.e stuck - state.

"That'll have to do." Micky said to Titan. To Pudgey he said, "How about another Peck attack while Psyduck cleans itself off?"

Pudgey nodded and let out a quick chirp. He dived towards his target which had dipped under the water and wiped the mud away from its eyes. When Pudgey was a little over five meters away from his target Psyduck's eyes glowed red (its left, blinded eye was significantly less red) and Pudgey suddenly seemed to lose focus. "Pudgey, what the hell? Keep at it." but it seemed that it couldn't.

Psyduck sent a Water Gun attack straight at Pudgey which knocked it back. His feathers drenched, Pudgey had no option but to land on dry land. Since there was no dry land about it settled for the closest alternative, significantly less than dry land. As its claws sank just below the surface of the mud it looked at Micky and chirped. What to do now? Micky thought. "Hey, Pudge. How about a Twister attack? Aggron, Mud Slap that duck again."

The attacks merged and enveloped Psyduck in a spinning vortex of mud and debris from the lakeside. When the attack subsided, Psyduck was still standing and breathing heavily. It had taken a heavy beating and, althought it was still standing, its knees were buckling. Full of rage, it let out a bloodthirsty cry: "Psyyyyy!", and a wave of water rose up in front of it. The wave continued to rise until Micky was sure that it was as tall as the trees.

"I'm sorry, Aggron, I'm going to have to use you as a shield." To Pudgey he said, "Quickly take flight. I don't need you knocked out and useless." Pudgey understood and took its slightly soggy wings, which were dry enough for it's fly confidently again, and lifted off. Micky ran to Matt and dragged him behind Aggron. "Holy crap, you're heavy. And you were making fun of my Pidgey because?" When he had finished talking to himself Micky crouched down in the mud behind Aggron. He took the chance to peek out and saw the wave begin to start its horrifying descent. Pudgey looked like he was going to get hit by the wave but lifted himself over the top just in time.

The wave came crashing down. It hit the ground in front of Aggron and rebounded up into its face. Aggron started lifted its arms to defend its face. But it wasn't much use. The little water that was stopped by shielding his face was nothing in comparison to the rest of the wave which followed hard upon and crashed into Aggron's arms also and pushed his arms into his face.

Micky sat cowering behind Aggron, holding onto Matt for all he was worth. The water which was rushing past them had created a little island which was quickly being encroached upon. Micky feared that Matt was going to be sucked away by the torrent of water. He slapped the unconcious teen. "Hey. Hey! Wake up already!" The water was beginning to soak through Matt's trainers and Micky held on to him tightly.

Matt woke up wet and clinging to a strange boy, head pounding. He surveyed the situation for a moment, and then shrugged. He'd woken up to weirder. He pushed himself to his feet and shot a smile at Micky, despite his headache. The water sucked past them both, and he gripped onto his Aggron, who wasn't going anywhere any time soon.

"Titan, you ok?" he asked. In response was a gargling 'mmrrrg!' of pain, and Matt patted his tin back. "Good, good. Now get out of the mud, you big baby. It's not that deep over there, just use that vine to pull."

Feigning grumpiness - Titan probably didn't even know what the emotion was - he gripped onto the thick vine hanging from a handy nearby tree, and pulled himself up. The tree was literally almost pulled out of the ground before the Aggron managed to lift his legs onto slightly firmer land and slowly shake off specks of mud and dirty water.

"Ok, now, you ready? You're gonna have to lure him into the shallow water. Look scary." Titan bared his teeth, looking a bit like a retarded Glalie. "Scarier." Titan's eyebrows twitched. "Scarier!" Matt said, throwing a pebble at his pokemon. The Aggron's muscles tensed, he twitched with mock anger, and then let out a tinny growl that ripped across the mud.

"Here," Matt said, wiping water from his face and coughing as it sprayed and whirled past. He caught onto a similar hanging vine and climbed a little way up it, holding his hand out to Micky. "I think we should get a bit higher."
