"It doesn't look so bad." Matt said, trying to reassure himself more than the Growlithe who sat at his feet. Scruff cocked his head at his trainer before sharing Matt's gaze at the mountain range. The jagged peaks stabbed at the sky like the fangs of some dragon, but they all paled in comparison to the large ominous Mount Stella that stood looming over all the rest. Matt and Scruff stood in the intimidating mountain's shadow starting to feel a bit overwhelmed.

Matt opened his bag to check and see what preparations he had made for their journey. Five pokeballs, 3 oran berries, and a map of the Aerei region. "Thanks Mom." Matt said insolently as he rolled his eyes and yelped as Scruff nipped at his foot in reprimand. Matt scowled at his pokemon but soon realized that Scruff was right; if he was to see what him and Scruff were made of, he would have to fend for himself. Him and Scruff were lucky that his mom was kind enough to give him those items to start with. He should be thanking her, not cursing her.

"Well boy, we should get going I guess." He said, Scruff barked excitedly in reply. Scruff was always a bit braver than Matt, but that comes with being able to breathe fire. Matt looked back hesitantly at Starling City behind him. The mountain range to the east would be a perfect place for him and Scruff to get a little experience before tackling Starling's gym. Matt stroked his lucky rabbit's foot and the two started up into the mountains.

The two hiked up into the mountains, only deviating from the trail when Scruff smelt something, or in search of wild pokemon to fight, or berries to eat. Neither of the quarries they hunted turned up though. They stopped next to a fallen tree at about midday, exhausted. Scruff collapsed onto the ground panting, taking the welcome break. Matt put his back against the fallen tree heaving. If the mountain air didn't make them healthier it certainly made them a bit more well conditioned.

"You hungry Scruff?'' he asked. Scruff growled his reply grinning and nodding with his tongue lolling out of his mouth. Matt smiled and caught his breath reaching into his backpack and pulling out the berries his mom had given him. He brought two of them out, and stashed the one back in safely in its own pouch. This was all the food they had so far so he would have to ration it. He was just about to hand a berry to Scruff when a sudden rustle in the grass made them stop and look.

"What was that?" Matt asked looking back at his Growlithe, Scruff said nothing in return but scrutinized the bush further. He took step after step closer, sniffing the air, but whatever was in the bush was upwind from the pokemon and he couldn't identify it's scent. "What is it boy?" Matt asked as Scruff got closer. Scruff turned his head to give Matt an "I don't know!" look when it happened.

A purple blur leaped from the bush crashing into Scruff with a dazing headbutt causing the pokemon to flinch. As he tried to recover the Rattata rushed towards the startled trainer with a menacing look on it's face and jumped at him fangs bared. Matt raised his hands to protect his face as the Rattata plowed into him knocking him over and biting his hands to get him to drop the berries. As soon as they were free the Rattata stored them in the pouches in it's cheeks and scampered off.

Matt scrambled to his feet and searched for the berries before he came to the realization; the Rattata had stolen them. A sudden rage fueled him. Those were his berries, but out here it was the law of the jungle. And if he wanted the berries he would have to chase that Rattata down and get them. A growl drew his attention to his feet where Scruff was starring intently where the Rattata ran and growling with his hackles raised. They caught eyes and nodded solemnly, both understanding the other. "Let's go get 'em, Scruff. Use odor sleuth!"

On cue, Scruff stuck his nose to the ground and almost immediately found the Rattata's scent. Scruff barked excitedly and rushed into the bushes following the trail. Under the threat of being left behind Matt chased his pokemon keeping on the little orange dog's heels. They caught up to the Rattata, who was taking a breather on a rock a little ways off from where it had stolen the it's prize. It gave a frightened squeal as it saw the duo racing towards it and scampered off further into the woods. It lead the two on a chase that took them racing over stumps, fallen logs, rocks, around trees even across a pond.

The chase ended however when the Rattata leaped into a hole dug under a tree. Scruff, being so intent on catching his prey, failed to notice the tree until he collided with it. The force of the blow knocked him on his but. He was shaking the daze from his head as Matt caught up to him huffing and puffing.

"Nooo!" he whined kicking the tree. "That can't be the end of it!" he cried. He kicked the tree again in frustration before the idea came to him. Scruff watched, puzzled, as his human gathered up some dried up leaves and brush, and began stacking the tinder at the entrance of the hole. "Alrighty Scruff, use ember on that and lets smoke that rat outta there!" he said, proud of his ingenuity. Scruff complied loosing a few red hot burning embers from his mouth, the dry material immediately caught fire.

The two stationed themselves outside the hole, waiting for Ratatta to come out fleeing it's smokey den. Minutes passed with no sign of movement, but the two remained alert. Their perseverance paid off though as Scruff let out a bark, letting Matt know he'd seen movement. Matt stared through the smoke, trying to see their foe but he couldn't. Luckily it didn't take much longer for it to emerge. Not one but several Ratatta fled the den, the duo was so startled that they hadn't the time to react.

The little purple rat pokemon ran in all direction, it was impossible to find which one had their berries, but Scruff's keen eyesight saw the one with fattened cheeks and he pounced on it. The force of the attack caused the berries to fly from the Ratatta's mouth. Matt waltzed over to them and picked them up, wiping them on his pants before putting them in his pocket. He watched the Ratatta struggle under Scruff's paw, his pokemon awaited orders and Matt contemplated what to do next.

He was about to tell Scruff to let the terrified Ratatta go when a loud growl of something that was obviously a lot larger than the two of them sounded from inside the hole. The trainer and his pokemon turned towards the noise, the Ratatta took this moment to scurry off, relieved from the distraction. Scruff sniffed the air and raised his hackles as he dipped lower and began growling. Goosebumps covered Matt's flesh and he stroked his lucky rabbit's foot. Something was coming and he knew it.

With a shriek, a wild Raticate came bounding out of the hole straight at Scruff. The puppy pokemon had barely enough time to react, and he dodged out of the way causing the huge rat to snap it's jaws closed at air. It turned to face Scruff and the Growlithe issued it a challenging roar. The Ratatta charged forward hoping to bite Scruff, he tried to get away but the Raticate was too quick and it sank its fangs into Scruff's neck. He yelped in pain and Matt winced. "Quick Scruff, while it's close use a fire fang!" He yelled, recalling the move that the stray Houndoom had used against his pokemon.

Scruff wasted no time in turning and sinking his jaws into the Raticate's paw and letting out a stream of fire. The Raticate howled in pain and retreated a couple steps holding it's scalded paw off the ground. Without giving Scruff enough time to situate himself the Raticate lurched forward whipping Scruff with it's tail and sending him flying into the tree.

Scruff crashed into the tree and slumped onto the ground. Concerned Matt took a step closer to his pokemon, to see if he could check on him, but the brown blur that shot out of the corner of his eye told him the Raticate had other ideas. He watched as the Raticate closed in for a hyper-fang attack on his Growlithe, who was getting up rather slowly leaving himself vulnerable.

"Scruff look out!" Matt called. Scruff looked up in time to see an airborne Raticate flying towards him, leading with it's rather large fangs which had taken on a whitish glow. Matt's mind shot back to the fight in the alleyway with the thug. His Machoke was closing in rapidly and Scruff was already battered as it was. Without thinking Matt called out for his pokemon to use a powerful attack that he didn't even know it could use. Well it could, and the result's sent the thug fleeing with his tail between his legs. He knew he would have to use that move now, or Scruff would have to pay for it.

"Scruff, hurry, Flamethrower! NOW!" he yelled. Scruff narrowed his eyes, zeroing in on the incoming Raticate. At this distance, it would be hard for the move to miss, and it would be a devastating blow. Scruff opened his jowls and produced a ball of flame which swirled for a split second before streaming from his mouth. It bathed the area in rich orange and red tints accompanied by intense heat before sailing through the air and colliding with the flying Raticate, sending the foe sailing back and crashing into a rock. When the fire died the heat went with it, and all that remained of the attack was a K.O.'d Raticate. Matt and Scruff approached the singed and smoking Raticate.

"Alright boy! We did it!" Matt cried proudly as he vigorously rubbed the spot between Scruff's ears. "Great job boy!" he praised his pokemon. Scruff yelped happily, sharing their moment of triumph, but it was short-lived. The two suddenly became quiet as more than a dozen purple Ratattas returned from the bushes crowding around the fallen Raticate. They nudged the large brown pokemon and muttered little cries of "Ratatta, Ratatta." A few began whimpering.

The Ratatta that had stolen their berries marched up to them, looking at the pair accusingly with tear filled eyes. Scruff tilted his head up to Matt who's own eyes had started to well up. Thats when it dawned on Matt that this Ratatta had only been trying to feed it's brothers and sisters. They were obviously a lot smaller than the pilfering Ratatta, still in need of their mothers protection. The mother that him and Scruff had just knocked out.

Matt sniffed and wiped his eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled the berries out, then into his backpack and grabbed the third. "Scruff....tell it that I'm sorry.'' he started, a stray tear running down his cheek. "I...I...didn't mean to hurt her. I didn't know." Scruff dutifully relayed his message, and when he was done Matt reached out and gave the rat pokemon the berries. The Ratatta sniffed the berries warily and shot glances between them and the trainer before scooping them up. To their relief the Raticate was waking up. The largest Ratatta, the one with the berries, barked an order out to the little ones and they began helping their mother back into the den. Then it turned and made it's way towards the hole.

"Wait!" Matt cried. "Will she be ok?" he asked, the desperation sounding in his voice. The Ratatta cocked it's head before it nodded. "Hmm...well we'll come back, to make sure, and to bring you guys more food." he said, hoping that this would right his and Scruff's wrong.

"Ratatta." was all it said, but it smiled before disappearing into the hole. It took awhile for the two to get back on the trail up into the mountains and the sun was begining to go down. After they hiked a bit longer both of their stomachs were rumbling.

"We're going to have to find some food man." Matt said rubbing his stomach, Scruff barked a reply. After a while of finding no food suitable to eat he decided that finding a place to sleep would be more important. After all you don't need to eat everyday. Matt knelt next to his partner and gently petted him. "You know, its gonna be rough, this adventure. But I know as long as I've got you bud, that everything is gonna turn out alright." He said giving his pokemon a reassuring smile. Scruff barked happily and licked his face, and he laughed. They continued on in search a suitable place to sleep for the night. And for a while they forgot about their hunger.
