It wasn't unusual to encounter eccentric trainers or bizarre bands of handlers that had odd ways of going about training their Pokemon, but thus far, Hannah had never had to deal with more than three trainers with more than two or three Pokemon. The aspiring champion was always willing to accept new challenges, however, was a bit unprepared for the demur that awaited her on her way back from Silex town. As she and Honey walked at a comfortable pace down the dirt path, it seemed to widen around a bend. Coupled with the unusually wide path, the girl stopped short upon realizing there were a group of people that seemed to be sparring with one another along different points along the trail. She and Honey exchanged quick glances before awkwardly continuing forward, though was quickly spotted and stopped by an older gentlemen. "You there!" He called in a gruff, guttural voice that caused Hannah to jump some. As he called attention to the girl, each of the other trainers and their Pokemon stopped what they were doing and began to watch expectantly as if waiting for something. "Oh, come on. I don't want any trouble; all we want to do is continue to the next town." Hannah frowned, still tired from her troubles in Silex and suddenly remembered the band of misfits she had come across in Starling. Though she was overly confident that she could handle them, she certainly wasn't in the mood. Much to her relief, however, rather than attack her, the old man merely smiled and extended his hand. "You haven't heard me out." He said, retracting his hand once Hannah had introduced herself and Honey. "My name is Edgar and these young trainers are my children and apprentices. We have trained here for a long time, challenging passing trainers to a rigorous and near impossible task. In return, you and your Pokemon will be rewarded greatly." "Rigorous and near impossible, huh?" Hannah immediately perked up; after all, the man seemed nice enough. What did they have to lose (well, besides the challenge). Noticing her interest, Edgar smiled and motioned towards the throng of young trainers behind him. "Each of the trainers you see here have three Pokemon at their call, all highly experienced. Your challenge is to face them all, using just one Pokemon per trainer. You will be given a Full Restore after each individual battle, but understand it will be both physically and mentally exhausting to both you and your Pokemon. Only trainers with strong bonds with their Pokemon will be able to succeed." Hannah listened, intrigued, and seemed to consider the man's offer when he finished. However, the dark-haired girl frowned and realized this wasn't entirely her decision to make, it was her Pokemon's. Taking the first Pokeball from her belt, the girl pressed the button on the capsule and released its content. The Pokemon inside materialized into a rather large Rapidash that immediately snorted and stepped back and away from the strange man. After releasing Bonnie, Hannah did the same with the rest of her team. Once all five of the Pokemon were out of their balls and attentive, Hannah explained the fundamentals of the challenge and finally if they were interested. Of course, Charla was the most boisterous when presented with the challenge, but all the team agreed and seemed eager. Bonnie tossed her mane into the air and trotted forward to volunteer herself first. Before Hannah could even turn around, a young man stepped up, bouncing a Pokeball up and down confidently in his hand whilst the old man from before absconded behind him with the rest of his children and apprentices. Behind Hannah stood the remainder of her team, all watching intently and awaiting their turns. "The name's Arthur," The boy announced. "and I've already earned five badges here and two in Kanto. You heard the rules so let's not waste time with formalities. I'm going to give your Rapidash a run for its money, no pun intended. Go, Gardevoir!" ![]() Hannah visibly frowned when she saw what Bonnie's opponent would be; Gardevoir were some of the smartest Pokemon in existence with with their psychic ability, didn't even need to come close to their opponents. Obviously, this was less than ideal considering Bonnie's attacks required her opponents to be at a reasonable distance and, as much as Hannah would hate to admit it, she wasn't the smartest Pokemon on her team. If they were even going to stand a chance (and truthfully, she was nervous; the last thing she wanted to do was lose the very first match) then they were going to have to have good communication and Bonnie would have to be at the top of her game. "This'll be a cinch, Bonnie." Hannah lied. "Start off strong with a Flamethrower!" Braying loudly, the Fire Horse Pokemon reared up onto her hind legs and ignited the flames on her mane brighter before spraying a cataract of red-hot flames. “Teleport, Gardevoir, then Confusion.” Before the command even fully left the young man’s lips, the Embrace Pokemon had gone through with the command in its entirety. It seemed the boy and his Gardevoir had the advantage of being able to communicate mentally, hence why the feminine Psychic-type had already carried outs its teleportation before even being told. As the Flamethrower engulfed the area where the Gardevoir had once been, the Embrace Pokemon was already kneeling a meter or so at Bonnie’s left; the Teleport had been carried out so quickly that the poor horse didn’t even seen the notice that her Flamethrower didn’t seem to be working. Then, it seemed the very moment that Bonnie realized that the Gardevoir had vanished, the Embrace Pokemon had proceeded with its Confusion attack, temporarily paralyzing the horse with both a painful mental attack and disorienting display of flashing, multicolored beams of energy. Like the instinctive creature she was, Bonnie immediately started to rear and flail uselessly, braying loudly whilst trying to dispel the invisible opponent; she was most definitely confused. Hannah stomped the ground out of both frustration and the realization the match was even more uneven now; she had trained and worked with Bonnie countless hours to get the horse to trust her enough not to freak out during battles like she had as a Ponyta. Now, whenever she confused, she seemed to revert back to that dangerous and instinctive behavior. “Snap out of it, Bonnie, hit it with a Flame Wheel!” Hannah tried to maintain her confident demeanor, though knew full well that this was going to be a difficult battle. Even if Bonnie had the advantage of speed on her side (and even then, it wasn’t much of an advantage; the Gardevoir didn’t need to necessarily be fast if it could teleport anytime it wanted), the Gardevoir had the advantage of being able to predict what they were going to do next. How could she attack something that knew and therefore could retaliate against every attack they were going to make? Not to mention Arthur and his Pokemon seemed to be able to communicate nonverbally for the most part, making it difficult to determine just what they were thinking. Hannah hated to admit it, even to herself, but Bonnie’s intelligence was no where near that of the Gardevoir and now that she was confused, it was going to be nearly impossible to command the horse appropriately. The confused Rapidash snorted and stomped the ground, lowering her head and sent a spiraling torrent of flames at her opponent, though her aim was off terribly. Of course, the Gardevoir proceeded to teleport out of harm’s way and then reappeared off to Bonnie’s side, utilizing a Shadow Sneak attack to catch the horse off guard. Bonnie brayed out in pain and tossed her head, then, after a moment, instinctively threw her back hooves as she sensed the Gardevoir behind her, though the Embrace Pokemon was well out of the way by then and back at the Rapidash’s front. Hannah could have predicted that her Flame Wheel attack would either be evaded entirety or at the very least would have inflicted minimal damage, but hoped that perhaps if she made note of the trainer and his Gardevoir’s habits, she could find a loophole somewhere. As the Rapidash continued to toss her head around widely, still evidently suffering from a unfortunate combination of both confusion and pain, Hannah realized that the boy and Gardevoir’s main tactic seemed to be teleporting and then attacking from behind. “Bonnie, Blaze Kick!” Hannah commanded, keeping her fingers crossed that the Gardevoir would go through the same motions as before. Bonnie, mindless of any sort of plan in the works, merely went through the motions in a sloppy and reckless manner, igniting the flames on her tendons and rushing at the Gardevoir with hooves blazing. When she reared up to try and lash out at the Embrace Pokemon with her front hooves, the Embrace Pokemon, as Hannah had hoped, teleported behind the horse. The feminine Pokemon lifted her hand as if to conjure up another attack, but without warning, Bonnie suddenly jumped forward and lashed out with her back feet like any horse would upon sensing a presence behind her and thanks to the Blaze Kick attack, her hooves were already blazing hot. Much to Hannah’s delight, the Gardevoir cried out in pain and was sent skidding backwards, her ‘dress’-like flesh now charred black. Surprisingly, despite the fact that the Gardevoir appeared to be a highly skilled Pokemon, the hit seemed to be a detrimental one. It appeared almost as if its offense entirely outweighed its defense and ability to take much pain at all. “Good job, Bonnie!” Hannah cried triumphantly. “Now, Bounce and hit it with a Megahorn!” “Double Team!” Arthur called, a sense of desperation present in his voice. The fact that he now seemed to be voicing his commands led Hannah to believe that somehow the damage inflicted to the Gardevoir somehow prevented them from communicating mentally (perhaps it was the burn she had inflicted?). Whatever the reason, the vocal command gave Hannah enough leeway to suddenly recall her command; “Bounce and then Wild Charge, Bonnie, find the real one!” As the Embrace Pokemon proceeded to split itself two, three, four, and eventually five copies, Bonnie leapt into the air and above the group, landing in the midst (crushing and causing one of them to vanish in the process) of them and released a surge of electricity present in the impromptu Wild Charge. Though the surge of electricity was no where near as strong as it could have been under normal circumstances (after all, Wild Charge required her to be running in order to build up a decent enough shock wave to inflict damage), but the attack was enough to provoke the copies and cause them to disappear. The real Gardevoir gasped some from the small shock, though was promptly met by the horse’s horn before she had time to react. The attack inflicted Bug-type damage, knocking the feminine Pokemon off her ‘feet’ and tossing her into the air. With another toss of her head, Bonnie threw the Gardevoir into a nearby tree trunk, causing the Pokemon to cry out dramatically and place a hand over her forehead in a pained fashion when she recovered. Her trainer, frowning, retrieved the Gardevoir’s Pokeball from his belt and returned the fallen Psychic-type. “Gardevoir has excellent attack power, but her defense is next to nothing. The trick was inflicting damage. Here,” He trailed off, retrieving something from a satchel at his feet. “as promised, one Full Restore.” Hannah frowned some, unsure of why the Gardevoir was being recalled (was the match really over?), but then perked up upon seeing the boy retrieve the Full Restore. The black-haired trainer hurried across the makeshift battlefield, took the offered potion, and then proceeded to treat the tired Rapidash. Though Bonnie needed a bit of help drinking the potion (and after spraying some of the fluid on her backside where the Gardevoir had attacked), the horse seemed rejuvenated and started to prance excitedly. Only after being certain that she was ready and willing to proceed with the second part of the match, Hannah retreated back to her side of the ‘field’ and awaited the opponent’s next Pokemon. She realized this was going to be a tedious process on both her and her Pokemon (it was hard work making sure they drunk the potion and making sure their wounds were tended to), but the group seemed to be making good on their offers. “If you’re ready, then we’ll begin the second round.” Arthur spoke coolly, bouncing another Pokeball in his hands. “Go, Arcanine!” ![]() Bonnie, with a renewed sense of animation about her, immediately went about pulling back her lips and displaying her teeth to the Arcanine in an combative manner. As the Fire Horse Pokemon pawed the ground rapaciously, Hannah was reminded of the fact that Bonnie acted more in instinct than her training and seemed to recognize the Arcanine as a predatory Pokemon that needed to be put out of commission for her own safety. Either way, the trainer was pleased to see that the Rapidash was fully interested in the battle rather than running away like she was prone to do. ”Okay, Bonnie, show ‘em we mean business with a Poison Jab!” Hannah commanded, drastically more confident about this particular match than the last. The fact that they had actually managed to outdo the Gardevoir when she was less enthusiastic about defeating it than the Arcanine seemed to assure her they would come out on top. While the trainer contemplated this, Bonnie reared up and brayed loudly, her horn glowing a bright purple and visibly secreting a thick and sludgy poison of some sorts. Once the horn was toxic potent enough to inflict some serious damage, the horse took off in the canine’s direction. Her speed was unsurpassed and she closed the distance within a fraction of a second, but the Arcanine possessed an important attribute she had forgotten about; it was also fast. With a booming bark, the canine-like Pokemon jumped up and over the charging horse, managing to barely avoid the oncoming horn. It’s movements were light and agile; without a sound it leapt off the ground a second time, angling itself towards Bonnie to attack. One thing Hannah noticed were that its movements were near identical to Bonnie’s; it seemed just as fast, could jump twice its own height with little to no effort, and was agile enough to react quickly. If this were the case, then it would seem that their advantage had been rendered inert. Unless, of course, she could figure the Arcanine out like the Gardevoir and spot some sort of loophole in the way that it moved. For now, unfortunately, it seemed as if they were going to put their speed aside and focus on another strength. After the Legendary Pokemon had successfully avoided the Poison Jab, Arthur hesitated on commanding the canine, seemingly waiting for Hannah to make the next move so they could react. ”Hit it with a Wild Charge!” Finally came the female’s command. While keeping her distance from the Arcanine would have been preferable, long distance attacks were limited to Fire-types like Flamethrower and Flame Wheel. If they were going to have to make contact with the Arcanine and risk retaliation, at least they would make it as hard for the dog as they possibly could. As the aforementioned Arcanine merely waited with its tail wagging, Bonnie reared up a second time and shot off. This time, however, rather than attack the dog head on, Bonnie rushed past the dog, brushing its side and causing it to jump instinctively. Arcanine whirled around, ears alert as it watched and waited, following Bonnie’s rapid movements fairly well up until the second pass by the horse did. By that time, the Wild Charge had enough momentum and static to build up a decent charge, shocking the dog some as Bonnie rushed past. Yelping, the Legendary Pokemon whirled around, but the shock served as enough of a temporary distraction and give the Rapidash enough time to legitimately attack. Without warning, the brunt of Bonnie’s massive bulk slammed into the Arcanine’s side, knocking the hound end over end. The Fire Horse’s lightening rod-like horn dug into the dog’s side, causing electricity to painfully course throughout the unfortunate dog’s body. “Arcanine, now’s your chance! Bite!” The boy called as both Pokemon collided and crashed to the ground. Despite the being electrocuted and crushed during the tackle by the Rapidash’s body, the Arcanine freed its head and neck, whipping around fast enough to lock its jaws around the horse’s shoulder before Bonnie could get up. With the Fire Horse in the canine’s jaws, Arthur called out his followup command; “Good, now use Body Slam!” Even if the Arcanine had the Rapidash securely in its jaws, it was still an incredibly awkward position; Bonnie was just as large as it was and holding her up seemed to be proving difficult for the dog Pokemon. Still, it lifted its paws to try and quell the horse’s inevitable struggling and forced itself up onto its feet, preparing to slam the entirety of its body weight down onto the Rapidash’s side. ”Low Kick, Bonnie!” Hannah called out desperately. With the way that Bonnie was situated in the canine’s mouth, it was possible for her to twist her torso around and lash out at the Arcanine with her front hooves, which of course, as any struggling animal would, she took the opportunity in full. Slamming those diamond-hard hooves into the Arcanine’s rib cage seemed to dispel any of the canine’s thoughts of going through with the Body Slam; it yelped and lost its hold on the horse, reeling back in pain while Bonnie rolled awkwardly onto her side in an attempt to stand. Unfortunately, the pain from her shoulder seemed to be hindering this process. “Don’t lose it, Arcanine! Double Kick it back then end this with an Extreme Speed!” In response to its trainers command, the Legendary Pokemon barked loudly (its voice cracked some with the pain from its hurt abdomen) and pounced on the downed equine, successfully swiping its massive paws across the horse’s jaw and already hurt shoulder. Then, as quickly as it had started the attack, it literally seemed to vanish. Hannah opened her mouth to try and warn Bonnie, but it was no use. As soon as the trainer opened her mouth, the Arcanine reappeared in the form of an orange blur and plowed into the Rapidash, sending her skidding across the ground painfully. ”Oh, Bonnie!” Hannah cried out, clasping a hand over her mouth. ”Are you okay, baby?” The mare nickered softly in response, tossing her mane confidently as she forced herself into a standing position. The horse and Arcanine looked one another over silently as if waiting for their trainers to make a move. However, despite it being technically her turn, Hannah hesitated and allowed Arthur the time to make the first move. The boy eagerly took the opportunity, thinking this was his chance to perhaps end the battle if at all possible; “Alright, Arcanine, Thunder Fang! We can do this!” The Legendary Pokemon let out a thunderous bark and leapt forward, electricity crackling from around its opened mouth. As the Arcanine took its first step towards Bonnie, Hannah finally called out her command; ”Horn Drill!” Had the Arcanine not attacked first, the attack probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to work. As the Arcanine jumped up to attack as any predator would, Bonnie reared up onto her hind legs and met the dog's tackle with her spinning horn. Since her horn was the first appendage to make contact with the Arcanine, it rendered the canine's Thunder Fang inert. The spinning horn stuck into the Arcanine's shoulder, at which point Bonnie threw her weight forward and tossed the dog onto the ground. After it hit the ground, it yelped in pain and thrashed around momentarily just before it was returned to its Pokeball by Arthur. The boy frowned and in the same motion as he put his Arcanine's ball back onto his belt, retrieved a second Full Restore and threw it across the makeshift battlefield to Hannah. As he readied his third and final Pokemon, Hannah proceeded to spray Bonnie down with the potion and let her drink the remainder, waiting a few moments for the horse's vigor to return and her wounds gone. "Alright then," Arthur cleared his throat confidently, his third and final Pokeball in hand. "here's my last hope. Go, Dodrio!" ![]() ”Just one more battle, Bonnie! You're going to have to be quick on your feet; that Dodrio will be fast. Start out with an Agility!” Bonnie nickered softly, tossing her mane in a show offy manner as both she and the Dodrio sized one another up. Both of the Pokemon seemed to be anxiously flitting from one foot to another, ready to show off their speed as soon as they were commanded to do so. Bonnie was the first with the opportunity to do this; as soon as the word 'Agility' left her trainer's mouth, the mare immediately started to prance in place, her hooves pounding the ground so fast they seemed to be nothing more than a blur. Once she'd built up enough speed and was satisfied with herself, Bonnie stopped, just in time for Hannah's second command. ”Great! Now, hit it with a Quick Attack! Attack the body!" Of course, Quick Attack was extremely vague and the horse could have attacked a number of different ways, however the Rapidash chose to advance on the Dodrio using her horn. It was a good thing Hannah made it clear what body part to attack, otherwise the poor mare probably wouldn’t have frozen in place when met with three possible targets. Bonnie reared up and charged forward, closing the distance between them in a fraction of a second. Still, despite how fast the Rapidash was, the Dodrio seemed to match that speed. Without even so much as waiting for a command from its trainer, the Triple Bird Pokemon jumped up and over the charging mare, using her backside as a runway before it landed behind her. Instinctively, Bonnie kicked backwards, but by that time the bird was well out of the way. "There's a reason I chose Dodrio for last. Your Rapidash may be fast, but my Dodrio is faster!" Arthur taunted from the sidelines while his Pokemon squawked victoriously. "Tri-Attack, Dodrio!" As Bonnie turned around to face the bird, all three of its heads were already charging an individual beam of energy that eventually formed a triangular shape. Hannah tensed, realizing their only chance of avoiding the attack was to try and land a hit before the Dodrio finished charging. ”Try another Quick Attack!" Hannah called out quickly, to which the mare responded with the same celerity. Unfortunately, just as Bonnie seemed a mere foot or so away from impacting the Triple Bird Pokemon suddenly opened all three of its beaks and released the three beams of energy directly into the poor mare’s face. The horse screamed, toppling end over end as a mixture of ice, fire, and electricity coursed throughout her body. For a second, Hannah was afraid that they had lost the match after just one hit. She started to walk forward (in a move that would forfeit the match), but suddenly stopped when Bonnie started to grumble and move, eventually forcing herself into standing back up. Though shaken and being a combination of burnt and frost bitten, the Flame Pokemon seemed even more enthused to win the battle than before. ”You sure?” Hannah asked the horse uncertainly; the last thing she wanted to do was force her Pokemon to battle. But, despite her trainer’s hesitance, the horse let out a loud bray and ignited the flames on her mane and tail brighter. “You have a little too much confidence in your Pokemon. You should know when to quit.” Arthur clearly wasn’t as inspired by Bonnie’s will to continue as Hannah; as soon as the horse had regained her footing, he took that opportunity to issue an attack. “Jump up and latch onto its backside, Dodrio! Fury Attack!” The Triple Bird Pokemon shrieked in unison and as it proceeded to run forward, simultaneously jumped upwards as well. Brows furrowed, Hannah frantically began waving her arms around as she screamed out her command, ”Bounce, Bonnie!" Bonnie followed the Dodrio’s lead by jumping up as well (and quite an astounding height for an animal her size and weight). The timing at which the two Pokemon jumped proved to be the Dodrio’s undoing; since it jumped first, it landed first as well, leaving itself upon for the horse to come crashing down on its fragile body. The poor bird was crushed under the Rapidash’s massive weight, its legs splaying comically out beneath it as all three heads whirled around wildly in both pain and fear. Bonnie immediately jumped off the bird, but it took a little longer for the bird to be able to pick itself up. This left Hannah an opening for another attack; ”Now, hit it with a Flamethrower!" While the Dodrio was still regaining its composure and attempting to stand, Bonnie opened her mouth and brayed. The deep, guttural sound of the cry melded with that of the roaring flames that then proceeded to ensnare the poor Dodrio. The bird began to squawk and jump up and down, its feathers becoming singed and burned, even becoming so damaged that after it finally managed to dispel the flames, a bald patch was visible on its crest and backside. Arthur frowned, realizing that the Dodrio's delicate and featherless feet must have been burned; as the bird shook off its smoldering feathers, it was hopping from foot to foot painfully. Still, it offered a unique opportunity to even the odds, which Arthur made clear with his next command. "Dodrio, even the playing field with Endeavor." Dodrio emitted a rattling hiss, though rather attack Bonnie physically, it seemed to be attacking her with its eyes. All six of the Triple Bird Pokemon's eyes began to glow a menacing red, at which point Bonnie began to cringe and snort. The Endeavor, unfortunately, had lowered Bonnie's HP to that of itself. Hannah groaned audibly, realizing that the prior elaborate attack had been for naught. ”Don't worry, Bonnie, we can still win." Hannah tried to assure the now worried mare. ”Finish this with a Wild Charge!" Upon hearing this command, Arthur seemed to tense, that attack having been one of the factors behind his Arcanine's defeat. Despite having her strength halved by the Endeavor attack, the mare reared up and bolted (literally) towards the Dodrio with her horn extended. The poor bird could only jump back (and subsequently shrieking in pain from its hurt foot) as the Flame Pokemon barreled into its breast. The Triple Bird Pokemon was sent skidding backwards, electricity crackling around its already singed body. As it did so, Arthur recalled the Flying-type back into its ball. Since this was Bonnie's last battle and therefore the horse wouldn't need healing, the boy didn't offer. Instead, he inclined his head in Hannah and Bonnie's direction, presumably admitting defeat, and retreating back with his other siblings. Once it was made clear they had won the first round, Hannah jumped up into the air and gleefully hurried up to Bonnie and threw her arms around the mare's neck. The two celebrated momentarily before Bonnie eventually went to join the other team members (who were debating amongst themselves who would go next). Enthusiastically, Ginger took her place beside Hannah while another young man stepped up to his respective side of the field. "The name's Gaven and I hate to toot my own horn, but I'm a much better battler than my brother. We'll show you and your Sandslash. Go, Raticate!" |

![]() Faced with the chattering Rat Pokemon, Ginger clicked her claws together and brandished her own set of sharp teeth. Then, without any prompting, the red Sandslash proceeded to do a couple of warmup spins and hand stands, showing off just how lithe she was. Hannah put a hand over her mouth and giggled some, thoroughly amused by the amount of energy the Sandslash had, however irritating her constant moving and flipping around could become. Though, taking the amount of stress she would be enduring, perhaps her stalwart energy level would be a good thing. Where as Bonnie started to become sluggish and non responsive after the first battle (even with the Full Restore), Hannah was sure Ginger would remain alert and raring to go throughout the entirety of the match. With that hopeful thought in mind, Hannah slapped a hand on the back of Ginger's neck (careful to avoid her spines) confidently. "Ready, baby girl? Let's start out strong; Defense Curl and then Rapid Spin!" Before the command fully left the trainer's lips, the red Sandslash was already jumping up into the air and spinning, curling herself into a basketball-sized, spiky sphere. As she hit the ground spinning, she immediately starting rolling in the Raticate's direction, throwing up a spray of dust and debris as she did so. The Rat Pokemon stood on its hind legs and successfully dodged Ginger's fist attempt at hitting it by jumping off to the side, but unfortunately, it underestimated the curled up pangolin's supreme range of motion. Like a tread tire digging into the terrain, Ginger turned her quills and thus immediately changed her own direction. With the sudden direction change, the Sandslash slammed into the Rat Pokemon's back and sent it toppling end over end with Ginger essentially surfing on its backside. "Slash it now!" Hannah called out the sound of crunching gravel and dead leaves as the two Pokemon skidded to a halt. Ginger came out of the impact relatively unharmed; she uncurled as soon as she impacted the Raticate and used the rat's body to break her fall. As the rat grumbled uncomfortably, Ginger jumped up and with one spinning motion, raked her massive claws across the Raticate's cheek as it tried to stand. After making contact, Ginger jumped back instinctively, putting distance between herself and the now pissed Raticate. Seeing the rat struggling to stand, Hannah couldn't help but let out a premature, triumphant shout; after all, they were off to an excellent start. Enthused by her trainer's display, the red Sandslash began to chatter excitedly as well, brandishing her claws in a haughty and intimidating manner to the wounded Raticate. Though it looked like an adverse lambaste and even seemed for a brief second they might have won the match with one attack, the stalwart rat Pokemon twitched its whiskers and pushed itself back up with an aggravated hiss. The Raticate began gnashing its teeth threateningly, appearing more mad and spurred on by its injury rather than disgruntled like Hannah and Ginger had been hoping. Behind the rat, its trainer grinned confidently, "Raticate can take the heat! Weaken it with a Screech and then use Hyper Fang, Raticate!" Immediately following the boy's command, a terrible shriek rebounded throughout the entirety of the clearing, bouncing off every surface and making it seem like the sound was coming from every imaginable direction. Ginger's flattened her sensitive ears against her head, trying her best to remain vigilant despite her obvious disorientation. It was then that the Raticate took the opportunity to attack, lurching with its front paws extended towards the red Sandslash's sensitive underbelly. Ginger was quick enough to dodge the rat's initial tackle, but was quickly swept off her feet by the opponents thick, squirming tail and overwhelmed. While Ginger tried to block the Raticate's teeth from latching onto her neck or belly, she shoved her claws into the opponent's oncoming mouth, expecting them to be able to withstand the force of the rat Pokemon's jaws. Unfortunately, she quickly realized even her tough claws were no match for the opponent's gnashing teeth; the Raticate bit clean through her left set of claws, snapping them off. Ginger squealed, more out of shock than pain and attempted to stand, however quickly lost her balance due to the dramatic difference in the weight of her arms. "Ginny!" Hannah cried, horrified. What had she allowed to happen to her Pokemon? Gingers claws were her main source of offense and defense! Without even one of them, there was no way the Ground-type could battle or even dig anymore. With the welfare of the red Sandslash in mind (and that guilt that every trainer felt every now and then), the black-haired girl started to run to her Pokemon's aid. However, the Raticate's trainer quickly shouted down her attempt. "If you touch your Pokemon, the battle's over!" He warned, to which his Raticate mimicked his almost taunting voice by flicking its tail to and fro. "Don't worry, your Sandslash will grow its claws back in a couple of weeks. Let's see how good of a trainer you really are." Hannah stopped, mouth hung open in protest, yet even despite her concern for Ginger, could she really forfeit the match? Her mental turmoil was cut short by a bout of high-pitched squeaks, the source being the red Sandslash herself. Despite having half of her claw broken off, the confident rodent seemed to be chiding Hannah for even considering ending the battle prematurely. Hannah pursed her lips and, going against her better judgement, backed up and returned to her side of the battle field. "Alright, then, Ginger. We can still do this, baby girl. Poison Sting!" "Slasand!" The pangolin-like Pokemon chirped quickly, and much to Hannah's surprise, charged towards the Raticate head on rather than spin as the trainer had expected. The whole point of Hannah issuing a Poison Sting was because it could be done at a distance and without the use of her claws; what was Ginger thinking taking the opponent head on? With her one good set of claws glowing a menacing purple color, Ginger rushed the Raticate and made an abrupt slashing motion to which the rat quickly and effortlessly dodged. This series of attacking and narrowly evading continued for a few seconds before Ginger finally displayed her full range of dexterity. As she brought her claws down for another unsuccessful blow (slamming into the ground rather than the Raticate), the Mouse Pokemon suddenly lurched her leg adjacent to the rat's body outside and to her side. The result was the claw on her toe hitting the Raticate right in the jaw and knocking it to the ground. Of course, Ginger would take this opportunity to quickly turn around and jab her one good set of claws into the rat's abdomen. "What're you, Ginny, a Ground-type or a Fighting-type?!" Hannah called with a broad grin on her face. "Now, use Crush Claw!" Though Crush Claw would be difficult for Ginger to execute with only one set of claws, Hannah figured it would be easier since the Raticate was downed. A grand finale, of sorts. As Ginger raised her arm to prepare for the Crush Claw, the Raticate suddenly seemed to spring back to life; it slashed out at Ginger's exposed face, causing the Sandslash to reel back in pain. Gaven audibly egged his Raticate on, taking advantage of his Pokemon's momentary triumph to issue his order. "Counter! Give em' a taste of their own medicine, Raticate!" As the boy called his command, that confident smile adorning Hannah's face faded some. One would even notice that her hand (which had been clenched since the beginning of the battle), was now turning a shade white. While Ginger shook her head to and fro to relieve herself of the pain from the Scratch attack, the Raticate suddenly sprung back up and swung its tail directly into Ginger. The rat's long tail had been coated in some sort of white veil of energy, delivering Ginger with twice the pain that she had dealt before and causing her to shriek loudly. It only took the pain a moment or two to sweep throughout the poor Pokemon's body, but in those brief few seconds, the Counter had taken a serious toll. Even after the move's effect had subsided, Ginger was visibly trembling and breathing heavily. "Are you okay, Ginny?" Hannah asked quietly, to which the Sandslash chirped a slightly irritated (Hannah knew she would never give up so long as she could still stand) 'yes'. "Good girl. Use Rapid Spin and end this with a Swift attack!"" Without hesitation, the weary Sandslash jumped forward and began to spin, kicking up a wave of dust in her wake. Immediately, the spinning action sent her streaking across the field and towards the Raticate, but her lack of ability to aim while curled up resulted in the rat merely jumping over the oncoming ball. Hannah could have called it; hence why she decided to follow up the Rapid Spin with a Swift attack. After passing the Raticate, Ginger wheeled around for a second hit. This time, however, several star-shaped projectiles began firing from Ginger's spines, seeming to target the opponent despite the rat's best attempt to dodge them. The projectiles hit the Raticate directly in the rump, causing the poor creature to trip forward, just long enough for Ginger to plow into its backside immediately after and subsequently toss it into the air. Not only did the momentum take its toll on the Raticate, but the fact that Ginger had lifted her poisonous spines also proved to be a hazard for the opponent. As soon as the rat hit the ground a meter or so from where it left the ground, it let out a pained hiss and struggled to stand. "Come on, Raticate!" Gaven tried to encourage his Pokemon into standing, but it was no use. Only when the rat's head fell motionless to the ground did the boy realize this match was over. Dejectedly, he recalled his Pokemon and proceeded to toss Hannah a Full Restore, which the girl promptly began spraying over her Sandslash's body. While Ginger seemed rejuvenated by the potion, it unfortunately did nothing to boost the growth of her claws. It would seem they were going to have to get creative for the remainder of the battle. As she contemplated such in her mind, Gaven recalled his Raticate and pulled out a second Pokeball, "We won't lose this time! Go, Linoone!" |

![]() ![]() As soon as the Rushing Pokemon was released, it started to rear onto its hind legs and brandish its claws, almost tauntingly to its opponent who seemed to be missing such a weapon. Hannah watched the two Pokemon square off before the battle officially began, racking her brain for any way they could win this match. From what she'd seen, Linoone were fast, hence their streamlined body. Not only was it obviously fast, but they had a set of claws that would even give a Sandslash a run for their money. Much to her dismay, the dark-haired trainer came up short with an immediate plan of action. It seemed she and Ginger were just going to have to attack and pay attention to the weasel's reaction and movements. "Don't let it get to you, Ginny. Start things off with an Earthquake!" TBC |
