It took her a good few minutes to realise that she was shaking, but when she did, she forced herself to suck in a deep breath and hold it for a while before blowing it out. The strange rise and fall of her chest woke Tryce from his nap and he blinked up at her, amber eyes confused as they adjusted to the light. "Hello again, little one," she said gently to her little Eevee. "I'm so sorry about all of that." He didn't seem to understand what she was talking about, but still the guilt flooded through her. He had been rejected by his mother and so hadn't had a real relationship with Sandie, but what about the other kits? What about Rocky? Had he loved her? She swallowed the lump in her throat and slipped Tryce into her pocket again so that his head and forepaws rested on the hem, and she made her way over to the ledge to check on Rocky again. Sandie had left just in time. The makeshift steps that the Eevee had been knocking into the rock with his Iron Tail had just about finished, and Kitty leaned over to help the kits up it one by one, and to take her pack from Rocky's mouth. They were all in the same place now and looking up to the next flat area on the mountain. If only the kits had pokeballs... Kitty took another deep breath to calm herself, and then nodded. She opened her mouth to tell the others what she was about to do, but then her heart nearly leapt out of her mouth instead when she noticed something. All of the Eevees were sniffing hard at the ground, ears twitching, eyes set with confusion. Rocky looked up at her, eyes wide, tail stiffened. The look in his eyes made her honestly sick to her stomach: pure betrayal, laced with anger, confusion. She swallowed again. "I can explain," she said, which is always the worst thing to say in these situations. "Look, she turned up, she saved Tryce. But then, she left. She just left. I...couldn't stop her." She trailed off, hearing the words as they came out of her mouth and wondering if it was possible that he would believe them, ever. His expression didn't falter, he stayed along the utterly appalled theme, mouth even falling open a little. It wasn't his intention, but he was revealing his layers of perfectly pointed white fangs to her. She started to shake again and Tryce mewled. Rocky barked at him, and, confused, the baby Eevee struggled out of her pocket, landing clumsily on the hard ground, and pottered back to his father. Rocky nudged him away from Kitty when he was close enough, and continued to look at her. "We have to climb this mountain," Kitty said weakly. "For Tyr. Can we just talk about this later?" Talk. Laughable. She would stammer her apologies to her oldest friend while he looked at her as though toxic sludge would be a more preferable companion. She had upset her Eevee before, but never to this extent. She had never banished the mother of his children before, and then hoped he simply wouldn't notice. "She left, Rocky," she said, tears pricking the backs of her eyes again. "I'm telling you, she just walked away." It was true enough that she didn't feel as though she was lying, but she was certainly embellishing the truth to seem like the better person. "Please, I tried to stop her." Now came the lies. "I tried, but she left. I know I let her go, and I'm sorry. Please." Her eyes were actually shining. The closest she'd come to crying since the Incident. She'd thought that had made her dead inside. She'd thought that was the worst thing anyone could ever have done, but could this be worse? No, the Incident was still far, far worse than this could ever be. But it was still bad. "I'm sorry, Rocky," she said again. "I have everyone's best interests at heart, please trust that." Now, there was a truth. She had just neglected to mention that in some cases her own best interests were just a hair more important. The Eevee broke his gaze. Whether he was beginning to try to believe and forgive was to be seen later on. She'd have to wait. She breathed again, and released Tyr on a whim along with Freya to make sure everyone stayed warm from her glow. The Torchic loved her. Clung to her like he needed her. That's what she wanted right now. And so they made their way up the rock face, Kitty with an Eevee in each pocket, one on her shoulder, and Tyr holding another as he clung to her backpack. Rocky held another two, and the last had to ride clinging for dear life onto Kitty's head. When they reached the next level of the outside of the mountain, she was panting a little. She set all of the babies down onto the ground again and returned Freya to re-release her on this level. There was a small cave opening in the rock face, one that she could clearly see the back of so there would be no more surprises, and so she set up temporary camp there for the night, rolling out her bedroll and using her bag as a pillow. The kits slept around Freya's flickering silver flames for warmth. ~Tier 1~ She woke up with a horrible pain in her neck. Sleeping fitfully on hard rock can do that to you. It didn't help, either, to wake up to the sight of at least five Lairon staring angrily at her. "Oh, crap," she muttered, pushing herself painfully to her feet. "Are we in your territory? I'm really sorry. We'll be leaving right now." They either didn't understand, or they didn't care, because one of them bonked her on the shin with its hard metallic head and she, still drowsy and uncoordinated, fell back onto her behind. "Ow!" There was a flash of beige, and before she could say anything, a tiny Eevee had bounced off the Lairon's iron hide and was out cold on the floor. "Tryce!" Kitty screamed, but Rocky was on it, rummaging through her bag for the right potions and berries. Kitty stood up again and wagged her finger at the now rather confused Lairon. "That was not nice!" she said. "He's only a baby. What do you say?" The Lairon looked at her, then the KO'd Eevee, then back to his friends, then back to her. "Lair?" Kitty sighed. "If I defeat one of you in a battle, can we pass?" That was how aggressive pokemon normally were. If you gained their respect you could do what you wanted, as long as you left their territory pretty quickly afterwards. She'd done her fair share of trespassing along the way. "Lair." His answer was unhelpful, but he wasn't attacking her, so she shrugged. She opened her mouth to call out Freya, perhaps the most obvious answer, but if she was incapacitated the kits would get cold. She rubbed her face as she realised the next best thing in this situation. "Alright, Tyr, you're up." She regretted it as soon as she'd said it. The Torchic could barely beat up a Hoppip, much less this stocky and annoyed-looking Lairon. He tried to hide his trembling as he stepped up to face his opponent, but the movement had to go somewhere, and soon the Lairon all around were scuffling their laughter at the nervously dancing Torchic their friend would soon pulverise. "Don't listen to them, Tyr," Kitty said pointlessly, because she knew that he would. "Fire Spin, go." The Lairon turned around in response and began to kick gloopy wet mud from nowhere, aiming right for Tyr's eyes. "No!" Kitty yelled. If that worked, the chick pokemon would totally give up as soon as he realised he couldn't see properly. And, of course, it would really hurt. "Dodge it!" she just about screamed, and to her utter surprise, Tyr unglued himself from the spot and fluttered rapidly to the right, escaping the stream of goop. "Yes," she breathed. "Go for the Fire Spin now." The Torchic unleashed an uncertain torrent of fire that danced around the Lairon, impeding his movement by a long way, making him not want to break through the wall of fire, however weedy it was. "Now that you're safer, go for Sand Attack." Tyr hopped up close to the Lairon, peering through the flames to see him gnashing his jaw at him. He squeaked and fluttered away again, then seemed to remember his command and quickly scrabbled dirt and dust into the Lairon's face, making it sneeze. It kicked mud onto the flames but to no real avail, and so just burst through them with a noticeable wince. Tyr panicked again and ran away. The Lairon and his buddies snickered, and he flashed in the light as he began to lumber after the Torchic. "Oh, Tyr," Kitty mumbled, knowing that if the Lairon built up enough speed he would be like the Juggernaut, and any impact following that would just knock Tyr out cold. She had to slow him down or bring him to a complete halt. "Fire Spin again," she called. The Torchic turned around and launched another, slightly more competent, Fire Spin at the Lairon, but the beast just burst through it again, flinching even more this time, though. "Ok, Focus Energy and then meet him with a Slash." This was definitely a gamble for a pokemon like Tyr, but he obeyed her, glinting briefly as he focused, and then turning, eyes closed and claws glowing, to meet the Lairon's Take Down attack. "Eyes open, Tyr!" His eyes snapped open, just in time, because he thrust his claws outwards and the impact mixed with the momentum flipped the Lairon onto his back. Kitty and Tyr both stood there blinking in surprise as the Lairon struggled fruitlessly to flip back over again. "Um," she said. Did she help it, or finish it off? Before she could decide, though, another Lairon ran forwards, clearly thinking that this wasn't a satisfactory end to a battle. Tyr, before receiving any guidance, blasted an enormous torrent of fire right into its face, and the Steel type immediately keeled over. When he was done, the Torchic blinked a little, looking to Kitty in confusion. "That was one of the rare displays of your genetic power," she explained to him. "That's the reason we're climbing this mountain, didn't I tell you? To find your tribe and try to make it so that you're always that strong." Tyr blinked some more, and looked around at the other Lairon. They didn't want to come near to him at all now, and that suited him just fine. "Great job," Kitty said warmly, picking him up and giving him a small hug. The Torchic chirruped in delight at the compliment, and Kitty, with a nod of thank to the Lairon, continued her journey upwards. "It looks like the easiest way would be in here for the moment," she said, referring to a small cave opening she hadn't noticed earlier that looked like it led inside the mountain, possibly to a more manmade path towards the top. "So everyone got all their limbs? Great, let's go." |

"Possibly this wasn't the best place to start", thought Keith, dragging himself further up the slope ahead of him. He'd had a smile on his face as he'd stepped from the plane onto the exciting new land of Aerei, and in this buoyant mood had decided that the mountain looked like a good place to go exploring and searching for Rock type Pokemon. He was currently regretting that decision. He'd made it quite a long way, but had been thinking longingly of the nice flat roads below him. Maybe a marsh would be a nice place to search for a Pokemon. Just before he decided to give it up and turn around, he spotted a plateau up ahead. "Rest", thought Keith, "that's what I need". He'd been walking for the majority of the day, and the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon. "Just get to the plateau," he told himself, "and then I can sleep". As he reached the plateau, he lay flat on his back, panting from the climb. He should be fitter, he reflected, but at that moment lying down seemed like the best thing to do. Eventually he sat up and looked at the view. Now that made it worthwhile. Watching the sunset from up here was beautiful, but also raised another question, where was he going to sleep. Looking around the plateau, Keith saw the entrance to a cave system. Just inside, he found a nice little niche, set up his sleeping bag and settled down for the night. Despite the climb, this hadn't been a bad first day. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith was woken the next morning by a voice outside. He rolled over, but eventually the sound of metal hitting soft tissue woke him up. He lay stock still for a while, listening to the voice, a female voice, giving commands. Eventually he worked up the courage to stick his head round the corner of the cave mouth, just in time to see a Lairon get hammered by an immense burst of flame from.....a Torchic?! The Lairon keeled over and Keith withdrew his head. A Trainer! A real life Trainer, who knew what they were doing and everything. Maybe she could help him. He packed up his stuff and, just as he finished, the young lady walked into the cave. She looked vaguely familiar now that Keith could see her properly. He opened his mouth to say hello, but was star struck by the multitude of Pokemon about her person, so just ended up standing there with his mouth open, looking a fool. Just remember, don't mess with the Torchic! "Hello?" Keith eventually managed, and then shut his mouth firmly, with the intention that he would plan out every word before opening it again. Kitty strode through the tunnel systems, hoping to get to the top as soon as possible. She didn't need any training right now, so hopefully she'd just be able to- She stopped walking. Something niggled at her. She turned around. She had just stormed straight past a person, who had said a meek 'hello' to her. How rude. She opened and shut her mouth a few times, and then cocked her head. "Uh, hi," she replied. "I, er, didn't know there was anyone around." She scratched at her nose awkwardly, wondering if he'd seen her battle and was inwardly laughing at her for having a Torchic so bad at battling. From the ground there was a squeal, and a thumbnail-sized paw dabbed at her shoe. Kitty absently placed a grumpy Tyr on the floor and replaced him with Tryce, the smallest Eevee kit. "Were you headed to the top as well?" |

Look at them all! Loads of Kits and that Torchic and....oh yeah, talking, time enough for Pokemon envy later. "Hello," Keith said again, but this time with more confidence. "Actually, I'm looking for Pokemon, I kind of want to be a Trainer....but i'm just a little unclear on the details at the moment if I'm honest." "You seem to be a very good trainer," Keith cast a slightly apprehensive look at the Torchic, "could you, maybe, point me in the direction of a good place to find some Pokemon?" What was he doing here? This young woman clearly knew more than he was ever likely to. And Keith was sure he knew her face. But from where? |

Kitty thought for a moment about where she was going: an extremely dangerous tribe of enormously powered fighting Blaziken. Not a brilliant place to bring a newbie trainer, or anyone unsure of their abilities at all, to be honest. The only reason she thought she'd be safe was that she had one of their own with her. "A place to find a pokemon?" she repeated, and then walked to the end of the short tunnel and gestured to the enormous multi-levelled cavern it opened out into. Graveller and Geodude built enormous rock monuments and hideaways, one tiny pebble at a time; Zubat and Golbat scattered left and right, echolocating busily so they didn't run into each other or the enormous dripping stalactites that hung low and glittering from the high ceiling. Whismur, Sandshrew and Ekans darted in and out of tiny holes in the sides, and Machop brawled loudly with each other for territory on the bottom level. "Here's a place to find pokemon," she said lightly, gesturing. "What did you want?" She had to raise her voice above the noises that all these tiny lives were making; the sounds made her smile widely. At her feet, the tiny Eevee babies looked to their father for safety - they had never seen so many pokemon in one place before. "Stick with me if you want to be safe," she added with a smirk. |

Look at them all! Keith had seen Pokemon before, of course he had, but never like this. The sheer amount of life in the chamber amazed him. "Urm, well, I kind of like Geodude..." said Keith, eventually. "But how do I catch one? I have Pokeballs," he said, gesturing to the small pack attached to his waist band, "but I'm not quite sure how to use them. Should I just...throw one at a Pokemon?" Why am I here, I really don't know enough. But the girl had said stick with her if he wanted to stay safe, and he wasn't going to disagree. Kitty sparkled at him, however possible that was, but she did. "Geodude are easy," she replied, "come on." In answer to his question, she laughed a little. "You should weaken them first. It's easy if you've done it before, but it'll be harder for you because you don't have a pokemon yet. You can borrow one of mine, if you want. It'll do them good to train under someone else for a bit." At the sound of this, Tyr and Freya exchanged nervous looks. Rocky was still doing his best to pleasantly ignore her existence, protectively trailing behind his kits who followed their trainer. She turned at the mention of his name, leading the way backwards for a moment. "Kitty," she replied, and span around again to continue walking. "Ah!" she said finally, pointing just ahead of them. The narrow passageway they walked along split into two, left and down into the main cavern and straight ahead inside the tunnel systems. Barely visible unless you squinted inside the tunnels was a Geodude, blending in perfectly to the rock, seemingly scanning the face for something specific. "Ok, here's your chance. If you screw it up, there'll be plenty more, so don't panic." She grinned at Keith, and then as quietly as she could, she released all of her pokemon. She gestured to the six that he could borrow: An Eevee, Tauros, Gorebyss, Torchic, Rapidash and Zweilous. "Pick one, go ahead," she said, splaying her fingers out above them proudly. |

"Ok, urm, thanks. I'll use Tauros" Keith breathed heavily, trying to remember what he'd read in the large amount of trainer books he'd assumed was adequate preparation. ...Geodude....basically a rock with arms....high defense. This Tauros looked strong, but maybe strength wasn't the best way to approach this battle. "Tauros, use Tail Whip!" Keith held his breath to see what the Tauros' reaction would be, but couldn't suppress the excitement growing throughout his body. A battle, a real battle....just try not to screw up |

Minos looked huffily at Kitty. Could she believe the cheek of this man? Trying to control him when she was right there, watching? But to his surprise she nodded at him and gave him a little thumbs up. He snorted incredulously, whipping his tails left and right. Did she think that just anyone was capable of controlling such a wild bea- "Minos, he said Tail Whip. Do you see that Geodude?" Kitty was saying impatiently, jerking her forefinger to the now curiously watching pokemon beyond the stone archway. He was still grumpy about the whole thing, but he rolled his eyes as best a Tauros could (which, it turns out, is rubbishly. He just blinked.) and galumphed forwards to greet the Rock type with a Tail Whip, the likes of which it had never encountered from such great and powerful a pokemon! The Geodude looked up at its attacker in irritation, then grabbed nearby loose rocks and started to violently hurl them Minos' way, much to the Tauros' anguish. "Rock Blast?" Kitty said, trying to be helpful to Keith. She bit her lip to prevent herself from taking over the battle entirely. Why had he chosen a Normal type to take on a Rock/Ground? |

In retrospect a Pokemon with only physical attacks against what was, when all is said and done, a rock, probably wasn't the best choice. God I suck at this, Keith thought, but now wasn't the time for that. "Urm, right, Tauros, use Work Up," Keith tried to think quickly, just how strong was this Tauros? "and follow it up with Take Down." he finished. |

That was much better, Minos thought, settling into the rhythm of the battle. That was just like something Kitty would have told him to do. All aggression all the time. He ran in circles for a moment, whipping himself hard with his tails to work himself up, and then snorted hard and continued running in order to slam hard into the Geodude, but the Rock type simply snickered and clambered up the rock wall to the left, jumping at the last minute and leapfrogging over the Tauros, landing on the rock floor just behind him. Minos had built up too much speed, however, and realised too late that he may have made a mistake doing such a reckless move in such a tight space. He crashed full on into the crumbling rock wall and Kitty flinched, hardly able to look. How bad would she seem if her Tauros was KO'd by his own first attack? But Minos wasn't down yet; he had a rock hard skull to envy the Geodude's. The impact had, however, crumbled the already loose wall, and the Geodude was delighted to see a lot of shiny objects come tumbling out. But he had no time to investigate, because Minos was angry and coming back for him with a second Take Down that hadn't been ordered. Clamping its hands over its head in protection, the wild rock pokemon used a Defence Curl and then the floor began to shake, too weak for an Earthquake. A Magnitude; Kitty estimated at a 3 or 4. Her Tauros would survive that, easy. The Geodude was hit full on by the unauthorised Take Down, but the Defence Curl had taken the brunt of the attack, angering the Tauros further, his eyes flashing dangerously. |

This was getting out of hand quickly, and Keith knew he had to start thinking before just ordering attacks. Depressingly, the only useful attack so far was one Keith hadn't ordered. But the Tauros seemed to like aggression, so he'd stick with that. "Right then, keep going Tauros, you've got him." I need to try and slow it down, thought Keith "Use Scary Face to slow him down, and then Horn Attack," Less powerful, thought Keith, but less likely to lead to Tauros injuring himself. |

The Tauros seemed to want to ignore the order for the Scary Face and just dive straight in with the goring, but he knew that Kitty would be annoyed at him for disobeying so with a snorting sigh, he glowered at the Geodude momentarily. In response, the Rock type curled up into a ball, and for a moment Kitty thought it was going to be irritating and go for another Defence Curl, but it started to spin slowly at first, then gathered speed and rolled rapidly towards the Tauros, who grumbled slightly at it. He remembered his second order, however, and waited for the moment to strike. The Geodude seemed for the moment to be more interested in gathering up speed than colliding with its opponent, and so Minos was getting increasingly frustrated because it took a lot longer after that Scary Face. Suddenly, it seemed to be satisfied with its momentum because it chipped a small rock on the ground and went flying, straight for the Tauros' head. "Now!" Kitty found herself crying, and in response Minos violently gouged at the enemy with his horns, hooking onto it and swinging his head hard to release it. The Geodude went hurtling towards the wall and smacked into it, falling hard and painfully to the ground. It got up, still able to battle, but wincing noticeably from the pain. Kitty was reddening fast at the realisation that she had almost taken control of the battle, so she didn't mention that it would be possible to throw a pokeball now; maybe it was weak enough. |

Well that had gone better. The Geodude was looking weakened, and who wouldn't be after an attack like that. He appreciated the help from Kitty, he'd needed it thus far. Maybe it was time to try a Pokeball. Keith retrieved one from his pack and drew back his arm, taking careful aim. He released it a little early, sweaty palms, and it looped through the air. Fortunately, he'd put too much power into the throw anyway, and the Pokeball looped towards the Geodude. Keith watched on with baited breath, already thinking about what attack to ask of Tauros if this didn't work. |

The pokeball bounced off of the disgruntled rock pokemon and then sucked it inside. The ball shook once. Twice. Three times - the Geodude inside was really fighting it. But with a small, satisfying ping, it stopped moving and glowing and just sat on the ground completely still. Kitty squealed with pride at her Tauros, and threw her arms around his soft ebony neck. He snorted her hair away from his nose. "Well done," she said to Keith. "Your first battle and your first pokemon. How does it feel?" |

What a feeling! No wonder people did this all the time. Not that it hadn't been tense! On the third shake of the Pokeball, Keith had been sure that he was going to break out. He was so relieved when the ball finally pinged. But this Geodude was a fighter, and Keith liked him already. "Thanks Kitty, it was great, and I couldn't have done it without you." "So," continued Keith "Where are we headed next? If you don't mind me coming along that is." |

Kitty couldn't help but laugh at this attitude. She had helped newbies before and they always seemed to run off afterwards. She liked the fact that he wanted to stick around, it was what she would have done. "You're welcome," she said. "It was a good learning experience for Minos, anyway, so thank you for that." She returned the Tauros, Zweilous, Torchic and Gorebyss to their pokeballs, leaving out Freya and the Eevee troupe. It would be good to have some company, anyway, until Rocky decided to forgive her for what she had done to his family. "We go up," she said simply, and started to lead the way again. She knew it wasn't to the left, because that led downwards, so they would have to go forwards towards the wall that Minos had annihilated with his reckless moves. She was about to move past it when the glittering rubble caught her eye and she leant down to inspect it. "It's pretty," she said, picking some of it up. "What is it? It looks valuable." A strange energy emanated from the stone and it was as black as the night sky. Could it be...Moon Stone? She pocketed it just in case. |

Keith followed Kitty and the troop of Eevee further into the cave system, past the hole in the wall. He felt quite bad about that, he hope he hadn't hurt the Tauros. "So, are you here exploring to?" he asked Kitty. He thought he might as well get to know her as he might be around her for a while. He didn't intend to hang around these caves on his own. "I've just come to Aerei, moved from Hoenn. How long have you been here?" asked Keith, as the group rounded a bend, onto a walkway cut into the wall of another large cavern. |

Kitty walked alongside her new companion, pleasantly half-listening to him as he spoke, but then something caught her attention. "Oh," she said suddenly, almost interrupting. "You moved here from Hoenn? So did I. Rocky and I did some training there and we travelled a lot but it was really my, um-" She didn't want to say 'boyfriend', it sounded so tacky. "-my friends who wanted to take part in the League. Then something bad happened, and it was my fault, so I moved out here and decided I did want to be a real trainer after all. I want to be in the Elite Four." It all came splurging out of her before she could think twice; almost her entire life story. If she wasn't careful she'd accidentally tell this complete stranger all about the Incident; a story she hadn't discussed with anyone since the court cases. "My friend actually went on to become the Champion of Hoenn," she went on. Why was she still talking? "We're not speaking any more but I hope he's still training." She blinked in confusion at herself, she never told people anything normally. "But I'll shut up. Tell me a little about you." In front of them a little family of Sandshrew scuttled in fright into a hole in the ground, led by a Sandslash who gave them a warning look before disappearing. |

Keith listened intently to what Kitty had to say. He liked hearing other peoples stories, it made him feel like they trusted him. He stumbled to avoid the last of the Sandshrew in their path, caught his balance and turned his attention back to Kitty. "Oh, where in Hoenn are you from? I'm from Lilycove." Keith thought he might as well tell her about himself. "I was working in the department store, but I needed to get out of Lilycove. To tell the truth, I don't have any real experience with Pokemon, or at least I didn't. I just needed adventure, something different to the 9 to 5 drudge of a regular job." Keith pulled out the Pokeball containing his new Geodude and contemplated it for a second. Then he let the Geodude out, might as well get to know it, he reasoned, it seemed to work for Kitty. The Geodude came out seemingly unamused at having been captured, but stuck close to Keith, and he got the impression of a begrudging respect. "I think I'll call you George, at least until I come up with a better name" Keith said, addressing the Geodude. "So, it was your friend who encouraged you to become a trainer?" Keith said to Kitty this time. He'd noticed something strange about the way she'd said friend, but decided not to push it. "It's cool that you know what you want. I've no idea what I'm doing really." |
