It took her a good few minutes to realise that she was shaking, but when she did, she forced herself to suck in a deep breath and hold it for a while before blowing it out. The strange rise and fall of her chest woke Tryce from his nap and he blinked up at her, amber eyes confused as they adjusted to the light. "Hello again, little one," she said gently to her little Eevee. "I'm so sorry about all of that." He didn't seem to understand what she was talking about, but still the guilt flooded through her. He had been rejected by his mother and so hadn't had a real relationship with Sandie, but what about the other kits? What about Rocky? Had he loved her? She swallowed the lump in her throat and slipped Tryce into her pocket again so that his head and forepaws rested on the hem, and she made her way over to the ledge to check on Rocky again. Sandie had left just in time. The makeshift steps that the Eevee had been knocking into the rock with his Iron Tail had just about finished, and Kitty leaned over to help the kits up it one by one, and to take her pack from Rocky's mouth. They were all in the same place now and looking up to the next flat area on the mountain. If only the kits had pokeballs... Kitty took another deep breath to calm herself, and then nodded. She opened her mouth to tell the others what she was about to do, but then her heart nearly leapt out of her mouth instead when she noticed something. All of the Eevees were sniffing hard at the ground, ears twitching, eyes set with confusion. Rocky looked up at her, eyes wide, tail stiffened. The look in his eyes made her honestly sick to her stomach: pure betrayal, laced with anger, confusion. She swallowed again. "I can explain," she said, which is always the worst thing to say in these situations. "Look, she turned up, she saved Tryce. But then, she left. She just left. I...couldn't stop her." She trailed off, hearing the words as they came out of her mouth and wondering if it was possible that he would believe them, ever. His expression didn't falter, he stayed along the utterly appalled theme, mouth even falling open a little. It wasn't his intention, but he was revealing his layers of perfectly pointed white fangs to her. She started to shake again and Tryce mewled. Rocky barked at him, and, confused, the baby Eevee struggled out of her pocket, landing clumsily on the hard ground, and pottered back to his father. Rocky nudged him away from Kitty when he was close enough, and continued to look at her. "We have to climb this mountain," Kitty said weakly. "For Tyr. Can we just talk about this later?" Talk. Laughable. She would stammer her apologies to her oldest friend while he looked at her as though toxic sludge would be a more preferable companion. She had upset her Eevee before, but never to this extent. She had never banished the mother of his children before, and then hoped he simply wouldn't notice. "She left, Rocky," she said, tears pricking the backs of her eyes again. "I'm telling you, she just walked away." It was true enough that she didn't feel as though she was lying, but she was certainly embellishing the truth to seem like the better person. "Please, I tried to stop her." Now came the lies. "I tried, but she left. I know I let her go, and I'm sorry. Please." Her eyes were actually shining. The closest she'd come to crying since the Incident. She'd thought that had made her dead inside. She'd thought that was the worst thing anyone could ever have done, but could this be worse? No, the Incident was still far, far worse than this could ever be. But it was still bad. "I'm sorry, Rocky," she said again. "I have everyone's best interests at heart, please trust that." Now, there was a truth. She had just neglected to mention that in some cases her own best interests were just a hair more important. The Eevee broke his gaze. Whether he was beginning to try to believe and forgive was to be seen later on. She'd have to wait. She breathed again, and released Tyr on a whim along with Freya to make sure everyone stayed warm from her glow. The Torchic loved her. Clung to her like he needed her. That's what she wanted right now. And so they made their way up the rock face, Kitty with an Eevee in each pocket, one on her shoulder, and Tyr holding another as he clung to her backpack. Rocky held another two, and the last had to ride clinging for dear life onto Kitty's head. When they reached the next level of the outside of the mountain, she was panting a little. She set all of the babies down onto the ground again and returned Freya to re-release her on this level. There was a small cave opening in the rock face, one that she could clearly see the back of so there would be no more surprises, and so she set up temporary camp there for the night, rolling out her bedroll and using her bag as a pillow. The kits slept around Freya's flickering silver flames for warmth. ~Tier 1~ She woke up with a horrible pain in her neck. Sleeping fitfully on hard rock can do that to you. It didn't help, either, to wake up to the sight of at least five Lairon staring angrily at her. "Oh, crap," she muttered, pushing herself painfully to her feet. "Are we in your territory? I'm really sorry. We'll be leaving right now." They either didn't understand, or they didn't care, because one of them bonked her on the shin with its hard metallic head and she, still drowsy and uncoordinated, fell back onto her behind. "Ow!" There was a flash of beige, and before she could say anything, a tiny Eevee had bounced off the Lairon's iron hide and was out cold on the floor. "Tryce!" Kitty screamed, but Rocky was on it, rummaging through her bag for the right potions and berries. Kitty stood up again and wagged her finger at the now rather confused Lairon. "That was not nice!" she said. "He's only a baby. What do you say?" The Lairon looked at her, then the KO'd Eevee, then back to his friends, then back to her. "Lair?" Kitty sighed. "If I defeat one of you in a battle, can we pass?" That was how aggressive pokemon normally were. If you gained their respect you could do what you wanted, as long as you left their territory pretty quickly afterwards. She'd done her fair share of trespassing along the way. "Lair." His answer was unhelpful, but he wasn't attacking her, so she shrugged. She opened her mouth to call out Freya, perhaps the most obvious answer, but if she was incapacitated the kits would get cold. She rubbed her face as she realised the next best thing in this situation. "Alright, Tyr, you're up." She regretted it as soon as she'd said it. The Torchic could barely beat up a Hoppip, much less this stocky and annoyed-looking Lairon. He tried to hide his trembling as he stepped up to face his opponent, but the movement had to go somewhere, and soon the Lairon all around were scuffling their laughter at the nervously dancing Torchic their friend would soon pulverise. "Don't listen to them, Tyr," Kitty said pointlessly, because she knew that he would. "Fire Spin, go." The Lairon turned around in response and began to kick gloopy wet mud from nowhere, aiming right for Tyr's eyes. "No!" Kitty yelled. If that worked, the chick pokemon would totally give up as soon as he realised he couldn't see properly. And, of course, it would really hurt. "Dodge it!" she just about screamed, and to her utter surprise, Tyr unglued himself from the spot and fluttered rapidly to the right, escaping the stream of goop. "Yes," she breathed. "Go for the Fire Spin now." The Torchic unleashed an uncertain torrent of fire that danced around the Lairon, impeding his movement by a long way, making him not want to break through the wall of fire, however weedy it was. "Now that you're safer, go for Sand Attack." Tyr hopped up close to the Lairon, peering through the flames to see him gnashing his jaw at him. He squeaked and fluttered away again, then seemed to remember his command and quickly scrabbled dirt and dust into the Lairon's face, making it sneeze. It kicked mud onto the flames but to no real avail, and so just burst through them with a noticeable wince. Tyr panicked again and ran away. The Lairon and his buddies snickered, and he flashed in the light as he began to lumber after the Torchic. "Oh, Tyr," Kitty mumbled, knowing that if the Lairon built up enough speed he would be like the Juggernaut, and any impact following that would just knock Tyr out cold. She had to slow him down or bring him to a complete halt. "Fire Spin again," she called. The Torchic turned around and launched another, slightly more competent, Fire Spin at the Lairon, but the beast just burst through it again, flinching even more this time, though. "Ok, Focus Energy and then meet him with a Slash." This was definitely a gamble for a pokemon like Tyr, but he obeyed her, glinting briefly as he focused, and then turning, eyes closed and claws glowing, to meet the Lairon's Take Down attack. "Eyes open, Tyr!" His eyes snapped open, just in time, because he thrust his claws outwards and the impact mixed with the momentum flipped the Lairon onto his back. Kitty and Tyr both stood there blinking in surprise as the Lairon struggled fruitlessly to flip back over again. "Um," she said. Did she help it, or finish it off? Before she could decide, though, another Lairon ran forwards, clearly thinking that this wasn't a satisfactory end to a battle. Tyr, before receiving any guidance, blasted an enormous torrent of fire right into its face, and the Steel type immediately keeled over. When he was done, the Torchic blinked a little, looking to Kitty in confusion. "That was one of the rare displays of your genetic power," she explained to him. "That's the reason we're climbing this mountain, didn't I tell you? To find your tribe and try to make it so that you're always that strong." Tyr blinked some more, and looked around at the other Lairon. They didn't want to come near to him at all now, and that suited him just fine. "Great job," Kitty said warmly, picking him up and giving him a small hug. The Torchic chirruped in delight at the compliment, and Kitty, with a nod of thank to the Lairon, continued her journey upwards. "It looks like the easiest way would be in here for the moment," she said, referring to a small cave opening she hadn't noticed earlier that looked like it led inside the mountain, possibly to a more manmade path towards the top. "So everyone got all their limbs? Great, let's go." |

Keith believed Kitty when she said she was alright. She seemed genuine enough, although she was clearly still a little worried. "Urm, I'm not sure." was Keith's initial reaction to Kitty's question. He crept to the entrance, and peeked at the lab beneath. Had he not known it's purpose, Keith would have been impressed at the range and scale of scientific equipment in the lab. It was filled with people at work. None of them seemed to be paying any attention to the walkway, but Keith had a feeling that they would turn at any noise. They seemed excited and jumpy. They'd have to distract them if they wanted to get across. He crept back to the group. "Right, I'm going to try something to distract them. When it starts, run." This wasn't going to be subtle, but it might work....as long as George could get away. "George, I need you to fly down there and do a Magnitude next to those crates," said Keith, gesturing toward some crates containing who knew what. "You should be able to get there undetected, the boxes are stacked pretty high. As soon as your done with the Magnitude, fly to the other end of this walkway and meet us there." George half nodded at Keith, and Keith was happy that his companion trusted him. He just hoped that the trust wasn't misplaced. He watched George fly, keeping close to the ceiling, until he reached the crates. "Get ready." He whispered to Kitty. As the crates began to shake, Keith tensed his legs, and as the first one began to fall, he bolted, hoping Kitty was sticking close. |

"When it starts, run." Kitty blinked at her companion, but there was no time for questioning. She ushered the Eevee kits desperately to the start of the walkway, and barely had time to return Freya to her pokeball before the floor below them began to shudder. It was a good plan; she would have gone for a distraction herself, but there was a flaw in it. Just because the floor beneath was the one subject to the Magnitude didn't mean the walkway was immune to the shaking. It groaned threateningly and Kitty winced, unsure whether she wanted to allow her kits onto it. But there was no choice. It was either that, or leave Rocky and Tryce (er, and the girl and her dad) and turn around and go home. The metal pathway groaned louder as Keith ran across, probably assuming that she was hot on her heels, but she wasn't. Her heart was in her throat. Would she make it? Would her kits fall to the floor? It was likely, with their elastic young skeletons, that they would survive the fall, but they would be immediately in the hands of the Umbrans if they did. Shaking, she made her decision. The Magnitude was almost done. She could see George shifting just behind the boxes, probably getting ready to fly back up to meet her at the other end, and she hadn't even dared to set a foot on the creaking, wobbling walkway yet. She had to do it. They had to just run. "Go," she told her kits, mentally cursing herself for probably the twentieth time for not getting them pokeballs. They seemed to understand her urgency, and they all ran as fast as they could across the walkway. When they were around halfway across, Kitty decided to add her own weight to the mix, and took a run up to sprint across the bridge as well. Bad idea. With a horrifying groan and rumble, the walkway actually detached with an ear-splitting 'ping' at her end from the wall and fell downwards in slow motion. Her eyes widened as her feet continued to pound across the steel, but she was slipping down it, hands scrabbling to catch onto something but not catching onto anything, and the kits in front of her beginning to slide towards her. Panic flooded through her with such force that she thought she would vomit, when suddenly her vision went completely black. A power outage? She wasn't falling any more, either. The bridge raised itself and smacked back against the wall with more deafening metallic noise, and she stood up, vision back to normal, to run back to the other end to meet with Keith. The kits looked confused, but grateful, and met them at the other end, finally off that scary metal path. Her hair was static, sticking up a little, and despite the smile on her face, the trainer looked very frightening. Her eyes had gone the colour of a bottomless pit and the bridge had moved of its own accord, and she didn't even seem to have noticed that there was anything out of the ordinary. "We need to go," she said brightly, her irises still near-black instead of their normal slate grey, but nowhere near as frightening as she had looked earlier. "Go, they're looking up. Now." |

Keith could hear the groaning of the walkway below him. The noise of tortured metal and rock behind him spurred him on. He didn't look round, he knew Kitty wasn't stupid enough to go slow in this situation. Or at least he thought that was the case. He heard the metal joints behind him pop, and felt the walkway begin to slope down. He threw himself forward onto the solid ground and turned round to see how close Kitty was. He was horrified to see her, only halfway across, flat on her face and sliding back down the walkway. He felt hopeless. He couldn't get to her, and George was too far away to be any help. He was going to have to slide down to help, but that would leave them both stranded. He was about to do so when the walkway suddenly stopped falling. Keith scrambled back from the edge, and watched with incredulity as the walkway raised itself and slammed back into place. He tried to see if something was lifting it, maybe a Pokemon, but there was nothing, either above or below the walkway. Keith was distracted by George's appearance next to him. He looked exhausted, and Keith returned him to his ball for a rest, but he'd done well. As Kitty reached him, Keith was lost for words. As they bustled off down the corridor, out of sight of the lab floor, Keith finally untangled his tongue enough to speak. "What? What?" He was blathering, confused and in a little shock. "Do you have any idea what that was? What happened? How?" He breathed a sigh, and waited for his heart to stop pounding. Before either of them could speak again, they heard running footsteps and shouts coming from down the tunnel, away from the lab. People had no doubt heard the commotion and were coming to investigate. Keith turned to Kitty. "What do we do?" Edited by Hodor, Jul 12 2012, 03:28 PM.

Kitty quickly walked alongside her, not wanting to look behind her at the offending bridge - and, as always, totally ignoring what had happened back there - but needing to count her Eevee kits. One, two three four, five, six...seven. Seven. Perfe- Seven? Panic seized her throat when she remembered that Tryce was missing. She counted again. Seven Eevee kits. She counted a third time, sweat breaking out across her. Tryce was not there, but there were seven kits. Before she could say anything, Keith had barraged her with questions and then she realised that there were people coming and had no time to deal with this worrying turn of events. "Here," she hissed, nodding to a steel cabinet to their left. Certainly big enough to fit her and the kits, but Keith as well? She looked around. Nowhere else to go. She flung the metal doors open and tossed the boxes out so that they went flying back and over the walkway into the destroyed lab. Nobody would notice more falling debris. She looked desperately at Keith as she ushered all...seven...kits inside, and the Azurill, and squeezed in. Would he fit too? |

Keith took one look at the already crowded cabinet and knew that he wasn't going to fit in. He tried to look around the corridor for somewhere to hide himself, but the footsteps were too close now. Guess I'll have to wing it. Keith walked to the cabinet and shut the door on Kitty and the others, motioning to her to be quiet. He turned towards the footsteps just as two Umbrans, a man and a woman, came round the corner. Keith stood at his tallest and knew he had to seize the advantage before they questioned him. "Hey, where the hell are you two going!?" he shouted at them. The Umbrans stopped at this, and Keith knew he had to keep at them whilst they were confused. "Why did you leave your posts?" asked Keith, still with an imperious manor. "Ur.....uh....." was all that the male Umbran could muster in response, but the female looked at Keith with suspicion. "Who are you?" she managed, and Keith's heart jumped. Oh god they'll find me out, thought Keith, but he managed to keep his face straight. "I've been out in the caves trying to find a suitable...." Keith left a dramatic pause "candidate." He thought seeming to already know about what was going on would help his case. "Where's your uniform?" "Well, people are hardly likely to trust me if I've got a great big Umbra sign on my chest" Keith had been ready for that one, but he knew he couldn't stand up to much more. The woman seemed to be thinking, staring Keith straight in the eye. Eventually she seemed to make up her mind. "We were coming to see what the noise was." she seemed to have decided to believe Keith. "There was a small earthquake, knocked some stuff over in the lab." Keith motioned backwards, to the direction they'd come from. "Oh, well, ok. They don't need any more candidates anyway, there's a girl in lab 3 who's perfect apparently." Keith's heart sank and he tried to keep the rage off of his face. "Alright. I'll go help them in the lab then, everything should be under control here. Just get back to your posts before someone finds them unguarded." The woman nodded at him, and the man grinned stupidly. Idiot, thought Keith, but nodded tersely back to the pair of them as they turned away. Keith waited until they'd rounded the bend and breathed a huge sigh of relief. He motioned over to the steel cabinet that it was ok to come out. |

Kitty came out of the cabinet when he motioned that it was ok, eyes wide and heart pounding. "I'm so sorry!" she mouthed, referring to the fact that she had been able to hide and he hadn't. But he had covered it up perfectly. There was always the chance that two people and a menagerie of tiny pokemon would have a harder time in trying to bluff their way into an Umbran's good books, anyway. Too suspicious, and too memorable. "Let's go," she whispered. "The girl in lab 3 they mentioned - she might be the daughter. If we point ourselves in that direction we should find everyone eventually." She gritted her teeth as another wave of fear rocked her, not allowing it to show on her face. "Come on." She turned on her heel and strode quickly in the direction the Umbrans had come from, her coat sweeping as she went and the tiny Eevee kits following closely at her heels. When they rounded the corner, Kitty had to quickly turn and storm back, face pale. "Someone's guarding the door," she said very quietly. A man had been standing, picking his nose and then glaring in shock at whatever he had dug out, beside one of the three doors up ahead. Whatever he was guarding must be pretty important, but once again the doors were all shut and there was no sign of Tryce or Rocky. "One last obstacle," she added to Keith, though she knew - and she assumed he did too - that this was probably not the case at all. |

"It's ok," said Keith, in answer to Kitty's apology, but she had already turned to walk away. One last obstacle Keith snorted with laughter, and shoved his hand over his mouth, hoping he hadn't made too much noise. "I doubt it's the last obstacle we'll face", he whispered. "You got this one? George is too tired to help and I don't think I can fool him." Keith noticed the Azurill that had been following them stumble out of the cabinet Kitty had been hidden in. It seemed not to want to be alone, but still shyed away when Keith went to see if it was ok. |

Kitty bit her lip as Keith handed the mantle of responsibility over to her. She tried to motion to the kits silently to hold back while she went forwards but they didn't seem to understand her mad gesturing and skittered back and forth to remain loyally at her heels. Without Rocky as a fallback there was no way she could get them to stay without her. She sighed, and then her heart lurched once again as she counted them. Seven! How had she forgotten that horrible fact? Tryce was nowhere to be seen, and yet there were seven kits. She swallowed the horrible lump in her throat and knelt to look at them all carefully. This could take priority, just quickly. Pretending that she was trying to will them all to stay behind with Keith as she went forward, she smiled widely at each of them in turn. Raksha, Archer, Venus, Xanthe, Lethe, Styx. All were there. Styx again. She counted again. Could she be imagining it? No, the last Eevee kit had duplicated himself. She controlled a shudder, and stood up again. They seemed to understand to stay with Keith, and she looked up at him with a smile, wondering if it would be possible to communicate the fact that one of her troupe had been replaced with a Ditto without speaking. She decided that, no, she would just have to confront it later. Without even a semblance of a plan in her head, she strolled over to the guard again. This time, he saw her just as well as she saw him. His eyes widened. "Hey!" he yelled, and seemed to be about to yell something out but in her panic she raised an arm and hissed 'shush,' and he seemed unable to open his mouth for a moment, attempting to scream from his throat and nose instead. Kitty winced at the noise as she approached, still with absolutely no idea what she would do next. It seemed her body had an idea, though. Her hands lay across his throat and squeezed. He thrashed, struggled, pushed her head and chest away with flailing limbs and continued to try to scream. She continued to gently shush him, unmoved and undeterred by his desperate struggling, until he went limp. Unconscious, not dead. Kitty dragged him by the arms to the cabinet, ignoring Keith's inevitable reaction, and stuffed him in, closing the doors. "He'll wake up in an hour or so," she said, a total guess. She had never done that before, nor seen it done on anybody. "Let's get moving." She glanced warily at the duplicate kits as she walked, happily trotting side by side. "Pick a door," she said, gesturing to the ones on the left and right and the one that had been guarded straight ahead. |

Keith peeped round the corner at the Umbran's yell, and was shocked to see Kitty strangling the guard with her bare hands. He wasn't small, and Keith wasn't at all sure why he wasn't fighting back, or rather, why his fight back was so ineffectual. As he went limp Keith stepped forward to help, but Kitty ignored him and he left her to it. He was a little shaken, he'd thought she'd try to cajole the guard. As she gave him the choice of direction, Keith looked around for the first time. "Well, if this one was guarded, lets try it" he said, making for the door straight ahead. He approached the door and depressed the handle, pushing his head round the door as it opened. The room on the other side was brightly lit, with a clinical feel to it. The door opened onto what appeared to be the second level of the room, with a metallic grill floor, and on the left hand side Keith could see a stairway down to the floor below, and on the opposite side of the room there was a door on this level. But this was just Keith looking round to try and ignore what filled the room. On both levels, cages, water tanks and boxes were stacked high, containing a menagerie of Pokemon. As Keith stepped into the room, cries from all sides bombarded him. A Chimchar beat its chest and threw fireballs at the wall of its cage, a Goldeen beat it's horn against it's tank and many other Pokemon shook the bars of their captivity. "....why?" Keith said at last, although probably not loud enough to be heard. He didn't understand why you'd do this. If you wanted these Pokemon, why not capture them ? "Have you ever seen anything like this?" Keith almost had to yell to Kitty, turning a confused face towards her. |

Kitty walked swiftly into the room after Keith, placing a hand on the cold railings that separated them from the floor below, and looked around with him. "Yes," she answered simply, bitterly. "This looks like it's the main holding room, I guess," she said to herself as well as to him. It was truly horrible, seeing all of these scrawny, jaundiced creatures either pointlessly scratching at their confines, or worse, just slumped listlessly in their cells. There were no Umbrans here. The first thing she noticed, and almost had a heart attack out of relief, was Rocky. He was standing, facing away from her, perfectly still and just staring into one of the cages. In it were two Simisear, and a small collection of semi-conscious Pansear with their limbs or heads resting against their parents. Rocky stood and just silently stared at this little family, muscles tensed with contained emotions that Kitty couldn't even begin to imagine. He heard or smelt their arrival and finally span, eyes resting on his kits, and recoiled just as she had expected him to when he noticed the clone of Styx happily playing with a sibling. He looked up to Kitty with wild confusion and she shook her head with lips pursed, communicating to him that she was pretending not to have noticed: they would solve this without putting any lives at risk or frightening the kits. "I wonder why there's nobody in here," she said, but her own question was semi answered when she noticed the food bowls were all full. "I guess they've just fed them recently and left them to it for now." She shrugged, and turned to Keith. "Well, I guess now we have to figure out how to save them," she said, then turned to Rocky. "Where is Tryce?" The Eevee shook his head, jaw clenched; he didn't know. Clearly he had followed his scent this far and it had been lost among the scents of all the other pokemon. |

Keith looked around the room, and noted the locks on all of the containers. Rather than keys, they seem ed to be electrical. And electrical meant master switch. Keith allowed himself a brief smile, before realizing what releasing all these Pokemon at once would mean. It would be a free for all to get to the doors, and he didn't think these Pokemon were in the mood for co-operation. Nevertheless, he scanned the walls for any kind of switch or lever. Nothing on this level, but down below, beside a door in the right wall that he could see through the grating, there was a dim red pulse of light from a box on the wall. Keith descended the stairs to the door, and took a look at the red box. It was indeed a button, with the words 'MASTER DOOR RELEASE' written across it, with the words "Emergency use only" in slightly smaller writing below it. A little on the nose, thought Keith to himself, but let it slide. Ignoring this for a second he pulled the door next to it open a fraction a peered out. He could see a small ante room with doors leading of of it. 'Lab 1' 'Lab 2', Keith's heart pounded as he stuck his head a little further round to see the next door label. 'Lab 3' There's a girl in lab 3 who's perfect apparently. Keith remembered the words of the Umbran. He pulled his head back into the storage room and shut the door, turning to Kitty. "The lab that they said the girl was in is through that door." he said flatly, "I think if we release these Pokemon it should cause enough of a distraction to get in and get her out." "You ready?" he said, reaching towards the switch. Edited by Hodor, Jul 25 2012, 04:17 PM.

Kitty imagined the confusion that was about to ensue, and trailed her eyes across her Eevee again for a moment. "One second," she said, trying to make her voice sound light and not suspicious at all. She nodded discreetly to Rocky, and he twitched his head upwards in recognition. They had not communicated a plan, but they both knew what was going on. One of the Eevee that looked like Styx was an imposter, but before she got rid of it she had to know which one was which. Subtly, Rocky herded the rest of the troupe to the other side of the room, towards the Simisear cage and, once alone, the two Eevee looked at each other as if for the first time, both looking shocked to see themselves reflected. She had seconds to figure out which one was the real one. And how better to find out which of them was an Eevee than by testing their evolution? She swallowed the hard lump in her throat that appeared as the idea formed quickly in her head; she was about to do something she had sworn she never would: force evolution on one of her babies. It was the only way she could figure out, in seconds, which one was which. If she introduced an evolution stone to both of them, one would naturally react, and the Ditto would copy this natural reaction when it knew what had happened. In other words, the one that evolved second was the imposter, and she would have to dispose of it before anyone got hurt. "Woops," she said loudly, after having fumbled in her bag for a while. An innocuous woollen blanket fell out of her bag and clattered towards the two Eevee, and she bent down to pick it up again after some hesitation, guilt still flowering in the pit of her stomach. "I'm so sorry," she managed to say, before one of them began to glow, looking shocked, and grew larger and spikier before her eyes. Just as she had guessed, seconds later the copy Eevee panicked, seeming to sense what had happened, and began to 'evolve' as well, and soon two Jolteon were standing looking perplexed in front of her. Only months old, the Jolteon still wasn't quite as big as his father, Kitty noted, before nodding to the one who had evolved second. "Everyone, take it out. Now." Rocky leapt forwards to beat the ever-loving crap out of the imitation Jolteon as Styx shrank back to his siblings, but just then it began to glow again, sensing defeat, and grew twenty times bigger. Kitty looked around in panic, wondering which of the dozens of pokemon it was replicating, until it stopped and roared down at them. An enormous Charizard beat its leathery wings as flames sprang from beneath its crushing jaws. "Crap." |

As the two identical Jolteon stood facing each other, Keith was amazed. Wow, a Ditto, thought Keith, wondering which was which, whilst a small part of him was screaming about how cute they were. As Kitty's Eevee stepped forward, Keith was impressed with her intelligence in telling the Ditto apart, but also felt a pang of sympathy for the Ditto. Until it began to change again. Crap is right, thought Keith, reaching for George's Pokeball. He released him, knowing that the Eevee didn't stand a chance, and began to think about which attacks to use. Right, so, fire and drago.....no! Keith was relieved he'd remembered before trying to use Magnitude. It may look like a dragon, but it's fire and flying. That means rock rock and a little more rock then. All this passed through his head as George emerged from his ball in front of Keith. He'd had a nice rest and was ready for more. This was a little bashed out of him as he stared straight into the underbelly of the Charizard, but rallied with his faith in Keith. He knew Keith was good....or at least he hoped he was. "Alright George, Rock Throw." Keith bit his lip. He knew that George shouldn't be too damaged by flying, normal or of course fire type attacks, but the Charizard was big. He couldn't leave George open. "And Defence Curl". George looked around the room for a rock, but seeing none decided to take maters into his own hands. He used a Rock Polish on the wall, dislodging several chunks, one of which he picked up and hurled straight at the Charizard. He's left himself open, thought Keith |

Styx Kitty had expected Rocky to shrink back at least a little when he noticed that the Jolteon had grown into an enormous Charizard, but he didn't even break his gait. The creepy little blob of goo had imitated one of his children; been creeping around beside them for Arceus knows how long, and he wanted rid of it. His glowing tail aimed to crack the huge Fire type's skull, but as he sprang upwards and pivoted, the Charizard instead effortlessly caught him by the tail and threw him back to the ground again, the Iron Tail instead making a dent in the concrete floor. Kitty gasped, and the kits mewled in confusion. At that moment, the rocks went flying towards the Charizard, who snorted distastefully and, beating its leathery wings, took to the air. The room was two storeys high, but still not quite high enough for any successful aerial manoeuvres, and the rocks still glanced off of its thick skin, leaving grooves that didn't well up with blood. Dittos. Kitty shuddered. "Styx, want to help?" she directed to the brand new Jolteon, still tiny and shaking like its siblings. He blinked over to her, barely understanding what it was she wanted. "Use, like, a Thundershock. You think you can do it?" The little eon concentrated hard, shivering and squeezing his eyes shut, but nothing happened. It was to be expected; he was newly electrical and under pressure. She shook her head and smiled. "Don't worry about it, you get out of the way." This perhaps sounded a little harsher than she had intended, but she had no time to rectify her semantics. The Charizard was diving down rapidly, aiming to smack straight into George with a Fly attack. |

The Fly attack connected with George with a terrible thump. Keith sucked in a shocked breath, and almost turned away from what he thought would be a pummeling. However, George bounced away from the Charizard, and when he eventually came to a stop, looked a little shaken, but not really hurt at all. Stop worrying, Keith scalded himself. "Alright, George, rocks are the way. Maybe more powerful. Do you think you could go for a Rock Blast?" George didn't waste time replying. He concentrated, and a faint blue ring formed around him. It grew in intensity and solidified into three glowing rocks circling him with increasing speed. As they became a blur, they broke off, the first going wide to the right of the Charizard, but the others heading towards it. "Ok, be ready for a Defence Curl" Keith added as the rocks arced towards the Ditto. |

The imitation Charizard was not going down without a fight, but fairly strong rock type attacks with quadrupled power were not to be trifled with, and the creature was noticeably wincing with the effort to continue attacking with the agility and force that it had been up until now. "Rocky," Kitty called over to her Eevee, who was struggling up onto his feet again, trembling and blinking. The attack had done some real damage to him; more than normal because he really hadn't been expecting it. She would have crossed the battlefield to get to him and the kits, but the Charizard was beginning to attack again, having been pelted by the succession of rocks and bellowing its displeasure. Judging by the horrifying glowing in its eyes, the flexing of its claws, the stance and the stretched wingspan, Kitty could see that the Charizard was readying a really, really strong attack. She fumbled for her Nav and thumbed her way through the touchscreen device to remind herself what kind of attacks a Charizard could know. Inferno? Heat Wave? Flare Blitz? She swallowed, desperately not wanting to know what would happen to all of them if it attempted- But with a gasp, it stopped trying, and panted instead, sweat beading at its forehead. What? Following a very slight hunch, Kitty whipped her head around to try to locate the original Charizard. Yes, that was it: frail, skinny, ribs poking at the thick orange hide; smaller than average with glassy eyes. Probably the product of forced evolution - it can't have known very powerful attacks, and that meant that neither did the Ditto. Instead, a pretty hefty Flamethrower erupted from its throat, attempting to boil poor George alive. Immediately the Charizard launched forward, following the attack with a full-powered Slash. |

As the Flamethrower erupted from the Charizard, Keith felt panic rising in his chest. He'd commanded a Defense Curl, but in the midst of that heat he didn't know if it would make a difference. But there was no time to move. He would just have to have confidence in George, he was certainly more powerful than before, and his resistance to Fire attacks should help. "Now!" He yelled at George, hoping he hadn't been too late. George curled round into a ball, turning his rock hard back to the oncoming Flamethrower just as it enveloped him. For a full three seconds he was obscured from Keith's sight, surrounded by the intense flame. Keith winced as the metal floor around George began to buckle. As the Flamethrower died away, Keith could see George resting on the floor, still curled round, but not moving. Keith watched as the Charizard moved into finish him off with the Slash, and panic over took him. "Move! Move now George! Wake the fuck up and MOVE!" At this last outburst George finally moved. He managed to roll 6ft to the left. It wasn't much, but it was enough to dodge the attack of the injured Charizard, who smashed straight through the floor where George had been. Keith breathed a sigh of relief, and tried to compose himself again. George managed to pick himself up, but he was clearly dazed. He couldn't take many more attacks like that, even with a Defense Curl, so speed was first on the agenda. "George, go for a Rock Polish, and then try and hit him with another Rock Blast." As George picked himself up from the ground and flew to the wall for the Rock Polish, Keith notices a slight shiny quality to the left side of his body. As he brush against the wall, sparks flew, and it his Keith that metal from the floor had been melted onto George. No time to worry about that now George came away from the wall looking better. He'd got his senses back after the onslaught, and as he began his Rock Blast, the blue ring was denser, and formed into 4 rocks. As they broke off, they headed for the Ditto with what seemed like more speed than before. George wasn't amused. And this Ditto was going to suffer. |

With Rocky incapacitated, and George getting more and more worn out by the second, it was starting to look as though this would be a battle that couldn't be won, unless Kitty risked crowding the area even more with one of her own pokemon; an option that wasn't beyond the realms of possibility, but would be a last resort. The pokemon all around were panicked enough as it was, and she hated the idea of another attacker to try to shield her Eevee from. Plus, it looked like the Geodude was getting really het up. She didn't want to rain on its parade. The Charizard roared, stamping its feet on the ground and causing a shudder to rip through the room, agitating the caged pokemon even further, to the point where their loud cries were getting almost too loud to bear. For a moment, Kitty was worried that this was the beginnings of an Earthquake, but nothing followed, so she took a breath again. It attempted to bash down all of the Rock Blasts with a series powerful Wing Attacks, and this looked as though it was working fine until the fourth collided, and then ripped straight through the flesh, leaving a large hole in the wing. The Charizard roared in pain and doubled over. "Now's your chance," Kitty yelled in Keith's direction. "Finish it!" |

Keith felt a pang of satisfaction as the Rock Blast finally hit the Ditto. He didn't need to be told twice to finish it off. "Alright George, another Rock Polish and finish him with a Rollout" George set off on the Rock Polish, still with the anger bubbling inside him. He scraped down the wall, and was still confused by the strange feeling on his side. As he broke away from the was he began to spin. His speed increased until he was just a blurry ball of spinning rock, and he dropped to the floor. As he hit it, the speed of his spin propelled him back up into the air on a trajectory straight into the torso of the Ditto/Charizard. |

As George catapulted into its stomach, the Charizard rocketed backwards, eyes squeezed shut with the pain, a low grunt escaping its throat. In mid-air it slowly transformed back, glowing and shrinking until a Ditto fell with a loud 'splat' onto the concrete floor. Not entirely satisfied that it was absolutely finished, Rocky pushed himself to his feet, blinked a few times, and then jumped into the air, tail glinting, and slammed the full weight of his Iron Tail straight down onto the pink blob. "It's definitely knocked out," Kitty said uncertainly. The Eevee glared up at her, and his tail flicked back to normal as he turned back to reassure his kits that everything was fine now. The newly evolved Jolteon still wasn't quite as big as his father, all big eyes and drooping ears. She wondered if she should apologise to him for having forced evolution on one of his babies, but decided against it. To apologise was to admit wrongdoing, and she had done enough wrong in his eyes already. Instead, she turned, strode past Keith, and slammed her palm hard against the emergency release button. At that moment, all of the cage doors lifted high enough for their occupants to creep outside, but a siren also began to blare in the centre of the room, flashing red light at the same time. Kitty looked over to Keith, eyes wide. "To Lab 3, now," she yelled over the alarm. |
