It took her a good few minutes to realise that she was shaking, but when she did, she forced herself to suck in a deep breath and hold it for a while before blowing it out. The strange rise and fall of her chest woke Tryce from his nap and he blinked up at her, amber eyes confused as they adjusted to the light. "Hello again, little one," she said gently to her little Eevee. "I'm so sorry about all of that." He didn't seem to understand what she was talking about, but still the guilt flooded through her. He had been rejected by his mother and so hadn't had a real relationship with Sandie, but what about the other kits? What about Rocky? Had he loved her? She swallowed the lump in her throat and slipped Tryce into her pocket again so that his head and forepaws rested on the hem, and she made her way over to the ledge to check on Rocky again. Sandie had left just in time. The makeshift steps that the Eevee had been knocking into the rock with his Iron Tail had just about finished, and Kitty leaned over to help the kits up it one by one, and to take her pack from Rocky's mouth. They were all in the same place now and looking up to the next flat area on the mountain. If only the kits had pokeballs... Kitty took another deep breath to calm herself, and then nodded. She opened her mouth to tell the others what she was about to do, but then her heart nearly leapt out of her mouth instead when she noticed something. All of the Eevees were sniffing hard at the ground, ears twitching, eyes set with confusion. Rocky looked up at her, eyes wide, tail stiffened. The look in his eyes made her honestly sick to her stomach: pure betrayal, laced with anger, confusion. She swallowed again. "I can explain," she said, which is always the worst thing to say in these situations. "Look, she turned up, she saved Tryce. But then, she left. She just left. I...couldn't stop her." She trailed off, hearing the words as they came out of her mouth and wondering if it was possible that he would believe them, ever. His expression didn't falter, he stayed along the utterly appalled theme, mouth even falling open a little. It wasn't his intention, but he was revealing his layers of perfectly pointed white fangs to her. She started to shake again and Tryce mewled. Rocky barked at him, and, confused, the baby Eevee struggled out of her pocket, landing clumsily on the hard ground, and pottered back to his father. Rocky nudged him away from Kitty when he was close enough, and continued to look at her. "We have to climb this mountain," Kitty said weakly. "For Tyr. Can we just talk about this later?" Talk. Laughable. She would stammer her apologies to her oldest friend while he looked at her as though toxic sludge would be a more preferable companion. She had upset her Eevee before, but never to this extent. She had never banished the mother of his children before, and then hoped he simply wouldn't notice. "She left, Rocky," she said, tears pricking the backs of her eyes again. "I'm telling you, she just walked away." It was true enough that she didn't feel as though she was lying, but she was certainly embellishing the truth to seem like the better person. "Please, I tried to stop her." Now came the lies. "I tried, but she left. I know I let her go, and I'm sorry. Please." Her eyes were actually shining. The closest she'd come to crying since the Incident. She'd thought that had made her dead inside. She'd thought that was the worst thing anyone could ever have done, but could this be worse? No, the Incident was still far, far worse than this could ever be. But it was still bad. "I'm sorry, Rocky," she said again. "I have everyone's best interests at heart, please trust that." Now, there was a truth. She had just neglected to mention that in some cases her own best interests were just a hair more important. The Eevee broke his gaze. Whether he was beginning to try to believe and forgive was to be seen later on. She'd have to wait. She breathed again, and released Tyr on a whim along with Freya to make sure everyone stayed warm from her glow. The Torchic loved her. Clung to her like he needed her. That's what she wanted right now. And so they made their way up the rock face, Kitty with an Eevee in each pocket, one on her shoulder, and Tyr holding another as he clung to her backpack. Rocky held another two, and the last had to ride clinging for dear life onto Kitty's head. When they reached the next level of the outside of the mountain, she was panting a little. She set all of the babies down onto the ground again and returned Freya to re-release her on this level. There was a small cave opening in the rock face, one that she could clearly see the back of so there would be no more surprises, and so she set up temporary camp there for the night, rolling out her bedroll and using her bag as a pillow. The kits slept around Freya's flickering silver flames for warmth. ~Tier 1~ She woke up with a horrible pain in her neck. Sleeping fitfully on hard rock can do that to you. It didn't help, either, to wake up to the sight of at least five Lairon staring angrily at her. "Oh, crap," she muttered, pushing herself painfully to her feet. "Are we in your territory? I'm really sorry. We'll be leaving right now." They either didn't understand, or they didn't care, because one of them bonked her on the shin with its hard metallic head and she, still drowsy and uncoordinated, fell back onto her behind. "Ow!" There was a flash of beige, and before she could say anything, a tiny Eevee had bounced off the Lairon's iron hide and was out cold on the floor. "Tryce!" Kitty screamed, but Rocky was on it, rummaging through her bag for the right potions and berries. Kitty stood up again and wagged her finger at the now rather confused Lairon. "That was not nice!" she said. "He's only a baby. What do you say?" The Lairon looked at her, then the KO'd Eevee, then back to his friends, then back to her. "Lair?" Kitty sighed. "If I defeat one of you in a battle, can we pass?" That was how aggressive pokemon normally were. If you gained their respect you could do what you wanted, as long as you left their territory pretty quickly afterwards. She'd done her fair share of trespassing along the way. "Lair." His answer was unhelpful, but he wasn't attacking her, so she shrugged. She opened her mouth to call out Freya, perhaps the most obvious answer, but if she was incapacitated the kits would get cold. She rubbed her face as she realised the next best thing in this situation. "Alright, Tyr, you're up." She regretted it as soon as she'd said it. The Torchic could barely beat up a Hoppip, much less this stocky and annoyed-looking Lairon. He tried to hide his trembling as he stepped up to face his opponent, but the movement had to go somewhere, and soon the Lairon all around were scuffling their laughter at the nervously dancing Torchic their friend would soon pulverise. "Don't listen to them, Tyr," Kitty said pointlessly, because she knew that he would. "Fire Spin, go." The Lairon turned around in response and began to kick gloopy wet mud from nowhere, aiming right for Tyr's eyes. "No!" Kitty yelled. If that worked, the chick pokemon would totally give up as soon as he realised he couldn't see properly. And, of course, it would really hurt. "Dodge it!" she just about screamed, and to her utter surprise, Tyr unglued himself from the spot and fluttered rapidly to the right, escaping the stream of goop. "Yes," she breathed. "Go for the Fire Spin now." The Torchic unleashed an uncertain torrent of fire that danced around the Lairon, impeding his movement by a long way, making him not want to break through the wall of fire, however weedy it was. "Now that you're safer, go for Sand Attack." Tyr hopped up close to the Lairon, peering through the flames to see him gnashing his jaw at him. He squeaked and fluttered away again, then seemed to remember his command and quickly scrabbled dirt and dust into the Lairon's face, making it sneeze. It kicked mud onto the flames but to no real avail, and so just burst through them with a noticeable wince. Tyr panicked again and ran away. The Lairon and his buddies snickered, and he flashed in the light as he began to lumber after the Torchic. "Oh, Tyr," Kitty mumbled, knowing that if the Lairon built up enough speed he would be like the Juggernaut, and any impact following that would just knock Tyr out cold. She had to slow him down or bring him to a complete halt. "Fire Spin again," she called. The Torchic turned around and launched another, slightly more competent, Fire Spin at the Lairon, but the beast just burst through it again, flinching even more this time, though. "Ok, Focus Energy and then meet him with a Slash." This was definitely a gamble for a pokemon like Tyr, but he obeyed her, glinting briefly as he focused, and then turning, eyes closed and claws glowing, to meet the Lairon's Take Down attack. "Eyes open, Tyr!" His eyes snapped open, just in time, because he thrust his claws outwards and the impact mixed with the momentum flipped the Lairon onto his back. Kitty and Tyr both stood there blinking in surprise as the Lairon struggled fruitlessly to flip back over again. "Um," she said. Did she help it, or finish it off? Before she could decide, though, another Lairon ran forwards, clearly thinking that this wasn't a satisfactory end to a battle. Tyr, before receiving any guidance, blasted an enormous torrent of fire right into its face, and the Steel type immediately keeled over. When he was done, the Torchic blinked a little, looking to Kitty in confusion. "That was one of the rare displays of your genetic power," she explained to him. "That's the reason we're climbing this mountain, didn't I tell you? To find your tribe and try to make it so that you're always that strong." Tyr blinked some more, and looked around at the other Lairon. They didn't want to come near to him at all now, and that suited him just fine. "Great job," Kitty said warmly, picking him up and giving him a small hug. The Torchic chirruped in delight at the compliment, and Kitty, with a nod of thank to the Lairon, continued her journey upwards. "It looks like the easiest way would be in here for the moment," she said, referring to a small cave opening she hadn't noticed earlier that looked like it led inside the mountain, possibly to a more manmade path towards the top. "So everyone got all their limbs? Great, let's go." |

Keith was just about to congratulate George as Kitty pressed the button and caught him off guard. The mass movement of Pokemon throughout the room was coupled with the immense sound of the alarm was slightly disorientating. Keith spent a good 5 seconds just trying to regain his bearings, and only then made a dash for the door. As he reached it he went straight through, and held the door open for the others, slamming it shut as George swooped through. He then led them to the door to Lab 3 and , hoping that the distraction had worked, softly pushed at the door. As it swung open he took in the large, white walled room. There was a large amount of scientific and medical equipment throughout the room. Mass spectrometers next to radio cardiographs, and all manner of equipment Keith couldn't even guess at the function of. There were several Umbrans in the room, but they were all paying no attention to the Lab. They were running for the door at the other end of the Lab, clearly trying to get as far away from the holding area as they could. In the center of the room, a bed that look mildly like a hospital bed stood surrounded by equipment. The main difference from a hospital bed were the restraints and straps holding the young woman on the bed in place. As the last of the Umbrans left the room Keith pushed the door fully open and rushed straight up to the young woman on the bed, undoing the straps holding her there. She was concision, but only just. "What the hell is this stuff?" Keith said to Kitty over his shoulder. Edited by Hodor, Aug 3 2012, 06:00 AM.

Kitty stepped into the room, admiring the scientific instruments and the way the sound of her steps echoed. She was vaguely aware of a hum of energy that hung in the air, emanating from the young girl, currently leaning semi-conscious on Keith. For a moment she just stared at the girl, a slight frown on her face; the world outside her head still shrieking with sirens and flashing lights. You stink of death. The words penetrated right to the core of her brain and she flinched. Was the girl talking to her with her mind? Was that even possible? She'd seen some pretty unbelievable things in her lifetime, though, and this couldn't have been the strangest. "Shut up," she snapped back before she could stop herself, waving the words away like flies. With a frown still lacing her features, she turned to continue looking around the room, setting her bag on the floor and expressing surprise when the blanket-wrapped egg rolled out and onto the floor. She'd forgotten about that. She was about to pick it up, when a brown streak rushed to her and leapt into her arms, and she almost wept with relief. Tryce! "Were you making sure she was ok?" she asked the Eevee, who was busily licking her face. "You silly thing, I was so worried about you." As she spoke to her secret favourite pokemon, something else caught her eye. A green cat pokemon stretched and then stalked towards her from underneath a table. "Oh," she said, surprised. It was a shiny Espeon. Kitty saw a small unlocked cage beside where the two had been, and put two and two together. "Did Tryce free you?" She would never know what had happened, because at that moment, the sound of a gun being cocked distracted her. She turned to see an Umbran holding a pistol to the temple of the struggling father, a hairy hand clamped to his mouth. "You've caused us quite a bit of bother," the man said, looking absolutely exhausted and unimpressed. |

Keith turned slowly to face the Umbran behind him, supporting the girl as he did so. As he saw the Umbrans face the anger began to rise in him again. Scumbag, Keith screamed inside. They tortured Pokemon, experimented on this poor girl and attacked countless other people. They were bullies, and Keith didn't like bullies. George began to fly towards the Umbran, but Keith stretched a hand out to him, signalling him to stop. "We're leaving, you may also leave if you are very careful about the decisions you make now." There was no fear in Keith's voice, he was too angry and filled with adrenaline to be scared. Keith began to walk towards the man, taking the girl with him supporting her on his shoulder, taking slightly labored steps as he did so. "Hey, stop!" the Umbran shouted, a little uncertainly. He wasn't used to people ignoring him when he had a gun, but Keith kept coming, taking short steps and pretty much dragging the girl with him. Keith was within 10 feet now, still focused on the door over the Umbrans shoulder, but ready to put his plan into action. Sorry about this, he thought, and almost fancied he heard the words Don't worry echo through his head. He took one more step, still focused on the door, and appeared to stumble. He dropped the girl, and she fell heavily to the floor. As she did so, Keith lunged for the gun. The Umbran reacted, but rather than just shooting the father panicked and tried to switch his aim to Keith. A shot rang out as the man swung the gun round, but missed Keith, and sent the mans unprepared arm reeling back in the recoil. It gave Keith just enough time to ram his right index finger behind the trigger of the gun, making it impossible to fire. The Umbran squeezed the trigger, and pain rushed up Keith's arm as the hard metal crushed his finger, but the gun didn't fire. "Not so tough are you now asshole." Keith yelled in the Umbran's face, bringing up his left arm and driving a punch straight into his stomach. He followed it with a knee to the Umbrans arm, making him release the gun. But Keith didn't stop. He rained blow after blow on the man, with fire in his eyes and an empty heart. The Umbran righted himself, and landed a few blows on Keith, but he didn't even notice through the rage. Keith floored the man with a powerful shot to the jaw, and stood over him, gun in hand, breathing hard. He knew he couldn't shoot him. The Umbrans face was a mask of pain and fear. He probably already had at least one broken bone, so brutal was Keith's onslaught, and he didn't like being this end of the gun barrel. "Please" The word escaped the Umbrans lips and Keith sneered at him. "Please? Please what? Please don't take a young girl? Please don't torture Pokemon and people? Just sit there and shut up." Keith looked round, caught Kitty's eye and gestured with his head first to the girl and then to the door. He then lent down and heaved the father up, keeping the gun pointed in the general direction of the Umbran, and started to back towards the door. As they backed away, the door to the holding area shook violently. It was being battered down. A certain poetic justice, Keith thought to himself, backing up to the door. "Lets see how your captives treat you now the tables are turned. Maybe they'll be merciful. Maybe they'll ignore you completely. Maybe they'll rip you to shreds." with this he backed through the door, and pulled it shut behind him. Edited by Hodor, Aug 5 2012, 02:36 PM.

They were struggling, with a gun in hand. Before it actually went off, Kitty pushed Tryce away, towards the shiny Espeon, who ushered him behind her, and then several things happened that took her a while to really comprehend. A shot was fired, ringing out in a loud, tinny way that made her jump. Then things were in slow motion. The bullet came towards her, aimed right for her stomach. Tryce cried out in pure anguish, she could vaguely hear it. Then, the bullet was surrounded in a thick purple light, and it curved, but it was moving too quickly...Then, pain. Right at the top of her leg. Her light trousers were slick with crimson, and she just blinked at it dumbly. It stung. She looked up with shock to see the Umbran on the floor and Keith pulling the father out of the room. She swallowed; her mouth had suddenly gone very dry, and she had an odd taste in it. Her head was spinning, and she didn't know wh- Pain! "I think I've been shot," she said, so faint and confused that she barely heard her own voice over the ringing in her ears. She'd never actually been shot before. Oh, it had been threatened, but it had not happened. She frowned, and attempted to stand up anyway. The pain was unbearable, and then it was gone. She felt great. She felt like she was floating. She threw the girl over her shoulder in a fireman's lift, effortlessly, and ushered her pokemon closer. The Azurill was still close behind. She looked at the Umbran, and she wondered calmly if she should kill him. As he stared into her eyes, his mouth fell open. "You, it's you! We were right, it happened; it's gone into you, hasn't it? This is...I have to tell the others! I have to tell..." Kitty followed Keith out of the door, and shut it just as the other door exploded open and dozens of furious pokemon flooded in. The Umbran's screams lingered on even after they were long swallowed. |

Keith lay the father down against the wall. They were back out in the caves, the door from the lab had led to a corridor that had ended with a heavy metal door like the one they had entered through, and they were free of the facility, leaving the still blaring sirens behind. Keith sat next to the man he had carried out, drained, all of the adrenaline and rage having left him exhausted. He sat with his eyes closed for what must have been a minute, and then opened them to look around. He saw Kitty, and then saw her leg. "Shit! What the hell happened? Are you ok?" |

"Are you ok?" His voice distracted her, and suddenly the pain came shooting back into her thigh as she looked at Keith. How had she left that room? She couldn't recall walking down that corridor or anything else. The girl fell from her grip and she stumbled, and would have fallen if the father hadn't caught her and taken the girl from her, allowing her to lean on him until she was sitting on the cave floor, pale and confused. "Uh, I don't know," she finally responded, looking at the still-growing red patch on her leg. "Am I?" "It's ok, sshh, I have experience in medicine," the man said, and proceeded to rip the left leg of her trousers off, turning them half into shorts, and tying the fabric tightly around the wound. Kitty just watched, perplexed, as this happened, and the girl began to stir. "I owe you my daughter's life. I don't know if I can ever repay you," he said, not looking up from his knot-tying. "You can find me a stick," Kitty replied with a small smile. She had been half joking, but the man immediately turned to his daughter's green Espeon, who pricked up her ears, nodded once, and leapt away through the tunnels. Where she intended to find a stick in the caves was beyond Kitty; she'd have to exit and get back in somewhere. She frowned. "Ok," she said. "It's explanation time. What was your daughter doing there?" The man paused, frowning deeply and shifting the young girl so she leant on his lap. "She was an experiment," he said quietly, as if he didn't want to believe it. "I worked in Umbra as a vet of sorts- I know, I know," he added, to the look that appeared on Kitty's face, "I didn't know they were monsters back then. A lot of us didn't." He sighed. "Anyway, they began a new experiment. One that really upset a lot of us. They got their hands on some embryos and they stuck DNA from Psychic pokemon in, hoping to create people who could communicate telepathically with pokemon, and therefore be the perfect warriors. The experiments were a failure, they thought, so they were going to destroy the evidence. The children, as they were now. Us scientists who were helping didn't let them, we adopted the children. When word got out somehow that my daughter here was exhibiting some telepathic abilities, they took her. They just took her. I was so frightened; I know what they're capable of, and-" At this point he dissolved into tears. Kitty wasn't one for comforting strangers, so she just nodded. "Fine," she said. "Well they got what they deserved. This base is unusable for quite some time. Anyway, my leg hurts. Like, really." She was attempting to remain calm, but sweat was beading on her ashen face. Just then, the Espeon reappeared, holding a perfectly sized sturdy-looking stick, fresh with leaves and a green centre. It must have found a tree and telekinetically removed it. Kitty took it, thanked the cat, and used it to help her stand, wavering and almost falling, and then standing straight. She was almost certainly about to pass out. Tryce whined for her at her feet. Keith didn't quite know what to do when the father started crying, but in the end opted for the reassuring pat on the shoulder. He helped the man up, and then the girl, who was still unconscious. With her strung between Keith and her father, they started moving, and Keith was able to let her father take her after a couple of feet, although it wasn't clear who was really holding who up. Keith looked round for Kitty and saw her moving awkwardly with the stick she'd been given. She looked pale, and weak, but Keith had a feeling she wouldn't ask for help or even accept it if he offered. She'd just keep walking until she passed out. Well bugger that, thought Keith, putting his arm round Kitty's waist, ignoring any reaction, and taking most of the weight off her feet. He wasn't quite carrying her, but he might as well have been. He turned back down the tunnel and began to follow the man and his daughter. They may not have known where they were going, but they didn't really need to. The tunnel led out onto the side of the mountain. The sky was a deep orange.Keith panicked a little at first, but then realized that it must be dusk by now, and the tiredness of the day washed over him. He breathed in the air deeply, not appreciating till now quite how stagnant the air had been in the tunnels and caves of the mountain. "Look, my village isn't far from here," said the man, panting heavily. "Both of you need rest, as do I and my daughter. I don't know what you went in that mountain in the first place for, but for now you should come with me." |

Kitty stopped just before exiting the mountain. She was in pain, yes, but it wasn't the worst pain she had ever felt. She had come here with a job to do, and she was so close. "I can't," she said. She turned to Keith, knowing that he would almost certainly try to make her come with them. They wouldn't understand. "I'll be fine," she said. "I have to get Tyr back to his family." Not even Kitty understood necessarily why she was so desperate to do this, but she was. The thought of giving up and following the others back to civilisation after everything she'd gone through was making her feel ill. She'd just have to start again. "I have to go." She released her Torchic, who looked around with confusion, then ran to barrel into her leg, making her squeak in pain. At the noise, he sprang back again in alarm, looking at the dried up tracks of blood running from her thigh to her ankle. "Chiic?" he asked. She took a deep breath. "Tyr, lead me to the Blaziken tribe. Do you know where they are?" The Torchic clicked his beak and then hopped towards a stone ramp that led to an archway within the mountains, ruffling his orange feathers. Further up; she should have known. Another surge of pain coursed through her. To go up or to give up. Either way would be painful and either way would be lonely. She wouldn't find what she was looking for no matter what. She looked at Keith, eyes wide, suddenly feeling very small. |

Keith looked at Kitty with disbelief, the girl had a gunshot wound and she was still trying to go on. He was going to say something as she turned to him, but when he saw her face he stopped. The look in her eyes told him she wasn't going to stop trying to get to the top. She looked a little afraid, in pain and yet also determined. He put a hand on her shoulder and looked her straight in the eye. "Look Kitty, I'm not going to leave you on your own. But I'm also not going to let you go on in this state. You need rest. No," he said, forestalling her argument, "you won't make it anywhere if you try to go tonight." "Here's your choice. Either we go with this man and get some proper rest. Or you stay here tonight, and we can keep going up this mountain in the morning. I say go and get some proper rest, but if your intent on keeping going," Which I know you are Keith thought, "then you'll be stuck with me all the way." As Keith spoke to Kitty he felt a pressure rising up his back, and as he finished the Azurill appeared on his right shoulder. It curled up against his neck, clearly exhausted from trying to hide from them all day on it's small legs. "If you don't make your mind up I will just carry you to civilization and get you treatment" Keith said finally to Kitty with a little steely glint in his eye. |

((=D)) Tryce and Rocky looked up at her warily, as Tyr waited by the ramp. "Ok, I've decided," she said slowly. Keith was blurring, and the whole cave was fading. "I think actually I just want to-" Everything went black, and Kitty went paper white before slumping onto the ground, her stick clattering onto the ground and making her Eevee troupe scamper away in fright. Now no one would know what she had decided. The decision was no longer hers to make. |
