The Almighty

Founded over two hundred years ago by a small group of people who simply called themselves the 'Raisers', the sect now known as the Amann de Rais is now considered to be the most influential religious group in all of Aerei. Based almost exclusively in the hard-to-reach theocratic city of Khalaban, the Amann de Rais are in charge of all major decisions regarding law and order. They are headed by the equally strict and enigmatic Brother Aras, an ex-monk who is rumoured to have trained in the deadliest of martial arts for years in the wastelands of Orre. Aras is rarely - perhaps even never - actually seen by the cityfolk, or the lower members of the sect, and this has borne many, many rumours about him, beginning at his being a master in martial arts, and continuing to say that he has captured and tamed Rayquaza. Since all law comes right from the top of the Amann de Rais, Khalaban is ruled in a way that revolves around their religious beliefs, which include the idea of strict hierarchy in power, but also strict equality in monetary worth, meaning that the most powerful members of the sect - known sometimes simply as 'Brothers' - must be obeyed on pain of imprisonment, but are not permitted to own more land, earn more wages or import more or better goods, than the lowest of the city dwellers. The Amann de Rais took their teachings from an old and dusty book unofficially called the Mortenomicon, as the real name is written in an ancient Aereian script of which the pronunciations were lost centuries ago. As the book is written in this script - which can be roughly translated but never read aloud - it is now understood that the Mortenomicon must never be read from; a tradition misunderstood by most non-members to mean that it is disrespectful, not impossible. The Mortenomicon is, to put it simply, next to impossible to decipher entirely. This was not a huge problem until fairly recently, when a simple scholar of the Amann de Rais came across a passage within the book that he felt had not been translated accurately. In essence, what had always been taken to mean, 'Death is sinister and unavoidably powerful' (and therefore founded the basis of the main principle of the Amann de Rais: protecting Aerei from the wrath of Morbidark, and finding out what this might manifest as - a fact that only the higher Brothers are aware of) he found he could retranslate equally to 'Death walks to your left and is your saviour.' This was checked and rechecked, and no scholar could necessarily agree which translation was the more accurate of the two. This led to a recent split in the ranks of the Amann de Rais, leading to two sects of semi-equal power, though both essentially believe in strictness, discipline and financial equality: the Amann de Rais strive to learn from the Mortenomicon when Morbidark is said to 'rise' to ultimate power and destroy the island entirely, and hope to be able to stop this from happening, while the offshoot of the sect, naming themselves the Raisers, after the founders, believe that the Mortenomicon is not a warning about the events leading up to the apocalypse, but rather instructions on how to bring it about. - Currently the Raisers operate in the underground cavern systems and have no political power. They live, work and operate as normal within the city's structure, and will not be discriminated against for being a Raiser, but they do not receive the respect of the Amann de Rais. The Mortenomicon is safely in display in the Cathedral, in the hands of the Amann de Rais and Brother Aras. Only the Brothers have access to the tower the book is contained in, let alone the display itself. The Raisers are currently trying desperately to find a way to get their hands on the book so that they can make their own plans for the end. If a member of the Amann de Rais is found to be spreading Raiser beliefs around, they are always quickly found out and 'demoted' to civilian. If this happens, no matter how hard the sect attempts to keep this covered up, the Raisers will always approach and attempt to recruit this ex member to their underground organisation. |
