Paris, Île-de-France Region, French Republic
14 September 1992. 1100 hours local time.

Tactical Board

Listen up, this is it. NATO command has just informed us that units defending Château-Thierry northwest of the capital have declared Broken Arrow and our tactical air was not able to prevent them from being overrun. The Russians are now advancing on Paris as we speak. It gets worse, our surviving radar in the Fulda pocket has given us the heads up on multiple large groups of enemy fighter aircraft headed towards the front lines in France. With most of our pilots still tied up over Belgium and the Netherlands, we need every single aircraft we can get in the air until they can scramble reinforcements from the UK. NATO command has authorized us for air-to-air, for the time being we're all that stands between Ivan and our aircraft on the ground at Charles de Gaulle and Le Bourget. They are your first and only priority. Until stated otherwise, we are not cleared for any air-to-ground ordnance; NATO command doesn't really have a choice at the moment about who defends their airspace, but understandably they don't particularly feel comfortable letting the mercs and volunteers drop bombs around a six thousand year old city. Expect primary opposition in the skies to be MiG-29's and MiG-27's, and I expect you to make damn sure they do not get Paris without a fight.

Enemy Force Composition:

Air Units:
1. Fighter-Bombers
2. Fighters

Ground Units:
1. MBTs

Mission Roster:

RCAF 1st Auxiliary Air Wing:
1. Col. Preston Hadwell
2. Astrid Stahl (BE)
3. Sir Mark Walker (Quinn)
4. Jean Musquin (Tweak)
5.
6.

NATO Forces:
1. None

The flight into the capital offered quite the view for the volunteer pilots, command and control had vectored the two fighters in just north of the city's center; If they hadn't been scrambled to intercept Russian fighters, and he had brought along a camera, Hadwell might just have snapped a picture of the Eiffel Tower and the surrounding landmarks. Of course, they had in fact been scrambled in defense of the capital, if the Colonel wanted to play tourist he knew that NATO would need to kick Ivan's ass all the way back to the Iron Curtain first. Thumbing the controls on the stick, the pilot selected his BVR missiles as the radar began scanning the distant horizon for prey. It was time for 1st Auxiliary to get to work.

As Astrid maintained her distance behind the Colonel's F-16, she looked out the cockpit of her own Falcon into the city below. She saw a city in chaos, as panic overcame the civilians who had yet to evacuate their beloved city. People were in the streets, fighting their way west as the Soviets advanced. Paris had survived two world wars, and now in the third it looked like the city would finally become a battleground. Astrid knew exactly what they were feeling. She had felt those same feelings as Germany had been overrun by the communists.

Astrid's internal reflections were interrupted when Hadwell instructed her to begin BVR combat. She flipped on her radar and got ready to earn her pay once again. Her heart sank as she saw what the two F-16s were up against. The sky was seemingly filled with Soviet aircraft. Oh well. The NATO pilots would go down fighting. Astrid locked up an enemy fighter with an AIM-7 and fired.

Hadwell released his first AIM-7 as Stahl's own leapt from the rail of the F-16, only seconds later he was watching as it began to veer off course. Apparently the seeker had found something more interesting further west.

Sir Mark let loose one of the four Sparrows that hung from the underside of his Phantom. He watched as the missile tracked his target in front of him and felt the weight balance of the aircraft shift ever so slightly. The old bird was heavily loaded down, with 18 500lber bombs, 4 AIM-9s and 4 AIM-7s... well, three now.

One of the local base personnel found himself in a spare Falcon. Looks the pilot shortage meant that anyone with flight hours would get seat time. Many of his friends went up to fight before he did, but not a single one came back. It was a weird feeling; being in the seat of a multi-million dollar fighter plane was something he could only dream about a few days ago. He was nervous though. He thought at any moment something awful could happen to him, and that would be the end of his journey. He was Jean Musquin, an aircraft mechanic turned fighter pilot overnight.

He targeted an aircraft and fired a Sparrow, and hoped it would hit, but doubted his chances after he saw the missiles of his wingmen fail.

"Fuck." Quickly, Sir Mark went through all his Sparrows, firing them off one by one at targets.

Astrid cursed as her first Sparrow missed. She fired off her remaining AIM-7 and prayed that this one hit.

Jean took a deep breath. Breathe, he thought. Just breathe. He fired his last missile and watched it as it went.

There were plenty of smoke trails in the air, but only two missiles of the 1st Auxiliary's volley found their mark as a pair of MiG-29's trailing in the enemy formation exploding upon impact. After effectively routing NATO air forces above the skies of Château-Thierry, the Russian pilots had planned on an easy run in to their objectives at the two international airports that sat just outside the French capital. However, their only threat didn't come from the air, the enemy aircraft were now directly above SAM sites as their crews attempted to stall the advance of the Soviet fighters.
