Name: Zial
Full title: eeys-mi Zial Teldieen ahn Nerand-ar
Birthplace: The city-ship Telmarr
Home Planet: Pćlidan-ere, now destroyed (see race description for the Gatekeepers)
Species: Gatekeeper
Gender: Male
Age: about 319, in Earth years

Height: 4'6
Weight: 105
Eye Color: reddish brown
Physical Appearance: Lateral scales a rusty-red color with flecks of dull orange and yellow. Feathers are the same shade of rusty-red with accents of black. Skin a light tan color. Robes are brown, with intricate writings in Elavien along the fringes.

From race description: The Gatekeepers are humanoid in form, with scales of varying color descending laterally along their entire bodies. It's evident that they evolved to live in an environment very different from ones found on other worlds, and they are poorly-suited to the activities and tools developed by most of the humanoid races. They appear to have three fingers and a stunted opposable thumb, but in actuality they have an additional four fingers that are long and thin and attached with a thick, leathery piece of skin forming crude wings as those of a bat. However, they are unable to fly at all and can only glide effectively in low-gravity environments. Their toes are in a zygodactyl arrangement, as such they are poor runners and move clumsily on land. They are between about 4 and 5'4 tall, and have a saggital crest with feathers on their head that usually lies flat. They also have a small feathered tail, and feathers on their face instead of eyebrows.

Guild and rank: eeys-mi (of middle rank) in the historians' guild, or Nerand-ar. Also trained as an assistant gatekeeper, or Vede-rra

Weapons and armor: none

Ship: Travels aboard the Faladir, a small explorers' vessel that makes its berth on board the city-ship Anaregas

Personality: Shy, but curious. Sage and knowledgeable despite his rank. Sweet and kindly, and difficult to anger. Very simple. Loves music and has mastered many instruments, but spends most of his time reading. Underneath has a slightly sarcastic side. Extremely slow and methodical.

History: Born and raised aboard the city-ship Telmarr. Apprenticed at age 51 with the Nerand-ar and traveled mainly aboard the Anaregas. Completed his apprenticeship at the young age of 198. During his apprenticeship he trained to be an assistant gatekeeper, which many of the explorers do in order to attain more freedom and greater likelihood of qualification for missions. Though skilled among his colleagues he's often overlooked for promotions and missions due to his quiet nature. As such he tends to spend time alone on worlds as an observer, learning about cultures and studying their histories, though he also often travels aboard the Faladir with his colleagues.

(note: Zial's history will be expanded as I RP him)

(Umm... so... I can't make any posts in the technology section because the board won't let me, so I'll just post this here I guess?)

Gates

(Note by the author: Should you need some additional details about the Gateways for a post please just consult me via PM or chat, please do not auto. This includes specifying which worlds have Gates. Thanks!)

Physical Appearance
All Gates are found in space, within the solar system of an inhabited planet (or, a planet that used to be inhabited). They are composed of a rare metal that is capable of conducting large amounts of energy. Gates are enormous in size, and large ships and freighters can pass through them. Most are oval in shape, though each Gate has a unique appearance, shape, and structure.

Occurrence
Not all Gates are still active, and they will fail if not maintained periodically. Systems whose species no longer use a Gate or which have died out may have inactive Gates. Traditionally, the Gatekeepers will arrive on a world and assess it based on several criteria before constructing a Gate. The inhabitants of the world must have warp capability, must maintain relatively peaceful relations with other worlds, and must be interesting in some respect to the Gatekeepers in order for a Gate to be build there. They also must agree to the building of the Gate. A Gate takes more than a decade to build, and many are thousands and thousands of years old. The inhabitants of any system in which a Gate was constructed may contact the Gatekeepers at any time to maintain or repair a Gate.

Most of the Gates in the alpha quadrant are inactive, though there may still be one or two Gates left that are used. Also, few gates have been constructed in the alpha quadrants compared with other quadrants in the galaxy.

Use
Any inactive Gate may be repaired, but only a Gatekeeper can conduct the repairs. There are a total of 147 Gates in the Milky Way. Each Gate connects to between 3 and 7 other Gates - you cannot reach any Gate from any Gate. This has to do with the parameters of a system’s sun, which provides the energy for the Gate - some suns are more easily connected to than others. Distance between Gates is irrelevant.

Travel through a Gate takes about 10 to 20 seconds. Anyone can activate it and direct the wormhole to any of its possible destinations, though without specific knowledge about a particular Gate there would be no way to tell exactly where it could go and which destination was which.
