Languages of Neolantia Neolantia's two official languages are Navis and Esprit. Education is bilingual and almost all Neolantians can speak both languages fluently. Navis is the common first language on the two island Cantons and Esprit in the four mainland Cantons. Neolantian Navis: Essentially identical to Orchyrian Navis with minor differences in grammar and spelling. Neolantians do have a distinct national accent and their speech tends to be less formal than that of Orchyrians. ((Real world equivalent: American or Canadian English)) Neolantian Esprit: As with Navis there are few significant differences between standard Neolantian Esprit and that spoken in Hesperia. ((Real world equivalent: Swiss or Belgian French)) Lanten: A distinct dialect of Esprit once widely spoken in the rural areas of mainland Neolantia. It has been slowly dying out and is now only common in Tonner, the northernmost Canton. It is derived from a very archaic version of the language and is extremely difficult to understand for speakers of standard Esprit. ((Real world equivalent: Cajun French)) Sosondowah: Not a single language but a catchall term the family of languages spoken by the Native Zephyrians who occupied the northwestern peninsula prior to it's colonization by Hesperia. Still spoken by scattered communities throughout the region. ((Real world equivalent: Iroquoian languages)) Other: Neolantia has a fairly large immigrant population and dozens of other Alterran languages are spoken by within the country. |

Languages of Orchyre: Navis is the official language of Orchyre; however, many other languages are spoken in Orchyre depending of geographic location. Navis: Navis was developed from the northern most island of Orchyre and after the appointment of the First High King of Orchyre, High King Aszit I. Navis is compulsory for all children to learn. Estwaelan: Estwaelan was developed one the Estwaelan island and was the official language of Estwael until they united into The United Kingdoms of Orchyre. Estwaelan is mainly spoken in Estwael and most people in Estwael still speak it alongside Navis. Olemish: A language brought to Orchyre from invaders. Olmond never left Orchyre but their language did slowly fade away. Now mostly only scholars studying Olmond still speak the dead language. Nestik: Once the official language of Nestowe in Orchyre, many Nestwalens still speak the language. In order to graduate from secondary school students are required to learn and become fluent in one non-Orchyrian language. Many students choose to learn Esprit. |

Languages of Daemonesu The official language of Daemonesu is Demonese and all official, legally binding documents are written in it. However, learning Navis in school is compulsory and is de facto the second official language. Demonese and Navis are used interchangeably in broadcasts, but each may have its own source of print; there is no law mandating signs need to be in both languages. Navis: Learned as soon as a child enters school. It is typically spoken in front of foreigners, partially out of politeness and partially out of paranoia regarding Demonese's sacredness. In major cities, it is typically blended with Demonese freely, creating a sub-dialect. In certain parts of the country, it is spoken with a lilt while in major cities there is an effort to speak it is spoken in Neolantia. Cine: An ancient Tribal language, it is effectively dead. Remnants remain in the form of names and some modern family names derive from it. ((RL equivalent: Irish Gaelic) Shuzoku: Despite being an ancient Tribal language, remnants of it have remained in use through names and with some small, isolated tribes that have refused to join the modern world. ((RL equivalent: mainly Japanese)) Demonese: Made up of several mora, it is functionally easy to learn but difficult to pronounce and is guarded as sacred. Two dialects exist: formal "rural" Demonese, which is properly spoken as it is taught, and "city" Demonese, which is filled with slang, grammatical shortcuts and truncated words, and imported words. Suffixes: Suffixes play an important part in Daemonesu and will be used no matter what language is spoken, though they may sometimes be replaced with their Navis equivalent. -kae = "Mother", may be used as a noun with a suffix -sumae = "Daughter", may also be used as a noun with a suffix -kami = Derived from a longer sentence, it is functionally "Living Goddess" and is translated as Empress -kaminofu = Translated as "Empress-to-be" and should never be translated as "princess" -kaminoryu = Translated as "Empress-who-was", it is applied to past Empresses -shiro = very respectful, often translated as Lord/Lady, though there is no direct equivalent -dana = spoken to a lower rank to remind them of their place; reprimanding -was = respectful, equivalent to "Mr./Ms." -mitsu = familiar, akin to using "Jenny" instead of "Jennifer" Edited by Demoness, Feb 12 2011, 07:23 PM.

Languages of Slostia Slostian: The native tongue of Slostia. It is similar in many respects to Espirit (They both have their roots in Cerebus-language) , but over the centuries, it has been shaped into a distinct language. Navis and Espirit: Taught in all schools as foreign languages. (Some schools teach other languages depending on availability of teachers.) In addition to these languages, there are many other languages that are spoken by the various ethnic groups that are concentrated mostly in the North of Slostia. For the most part, these languages are more closely related to the Liberian and Xian languages that their ancestors spoke than to any other Hesperian language. I feel like I've said this before, but I'm thinking about changing Slostian to the Alterran version of German, as it is the only language other than English that I speak with any skill whatsoever. (as Navis is to English and Espirit is to French). Perhaps Slostian evolved into Alterra-Afrikaans when it reached Espirit, or vice versa. Combined two posts (the last paragraph) for clarification. Languages of Psyonia Psyonian: Psyonian is the official language of Psyonia, and is the language that most government business is done in. That being said, Psyonian is sometimes classified by linguists as a "language group" rather than a single language. This is because there are currently eight distinct dialects of Psyonian spoken throughout the country. All of the dialects use the same character system, and groupings of characters still mean the same thing. The difference is purely in the pronunciation. What is widely referred to as Standard Psyonian (though is also called Palentian Psyonian) is learned by all Psyonian children, and all national television channels broadcast in that dialect only. Local broadcast stations and schools may be taught in the local dialect if it has official status in that area. The Psyonian Language Institute has records on over fifty extinct dialects of Psyonian, though one of the older dialects has recently been resurrected by Psyonian teenagers seeking to hold conversations that the teachers and parents can't understand. Navis and Espirit: As the most widely spoken languages on Alterra, Navis and Espirit have been given special status in Psyonia. In an effort to make the country more favorable to merchants, the Federal Republic of Psyonia instituted a policy of printing all government signs in Navis and Espirit along with Psyonian. This policy was continued under the People's Republic, though for differing reasons (mostly relating to tourism and immigration). Navis and Espirit are the most taught foreign languages in Psyonian school. Others: Ethnic enclaves in Psyonian Cities (there are a few of them around) will frequently have their native tongue given official status within the enclave's area. This typically means that schools in the area can be taught in that language, and signs are posted in that language as well as Psyonian, Navis and Espirit. Edited by Psyonia, Feb 16 2011, 06:07 PM.

Languages of Artfulia Gaelig: Gaelig is the official language of Artfulia and the primary language for the regions surrounding the country. Its roots trace back thousands of years to the beginning of written history and has gone through three forms: Old Gaelig, Middle Gaelig and Modern Gaelig. The priests and bards of Artfulia's national religion, Belsric, read and sing the holy scripts exclusively in Middle Gaelig, though groups of liberal Belsrics have translated and printed the texts into Modern Gaelig, Navis and Esprit. Navis and Esprit: Navis and Esprit are taught at secondary school level and beyond. These languages are mainly spoken by scholars, businessmen and politicians, though it's not uncommon for children to pick up words and phrases from media outlets. |
