Over the past couple of nights, I've been working on the outline of a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie called Xochitl, meaning "flower" in Nahuatl. The significance will be explained in later chapters. (By the way, all of the characters are Japanese.) Here are the four chapters that I've got down so far: Kaishi (Start). This chapter is a prologue. The year is 2231. Two hundred and forty seven years following a nuclear apocalypse, what is left of humanity is located in a small enclave in Japan, where Osaka once stood. This new settlement is called Nishuto, a portmanteau of the Japanese words for “western capital”. Here, 22,456,024 people live in 250 square kilometres, and as a result there is an astronomically high population density (89,824 people per square kilometre), meaning that structures must go deep below the ground and high above it at the same time to accommodate all of the people. Resources are made by personal computers (including food), and genuine resources are almost nonexistent and extremely expensive. This chapter also shows the apocalypse and what happens after it. Ni (2). This chapter is the true beginning of the story. Thirteen-year-old Flavio is a Spaniard living in Nishuto, whose ancestry hasn’t been fully Indo-European since before the apocalypse; many of his ancestors and relatives are Japanese, and he is predominantly so. He is a student at Sector 212’s secondary school, where crime is rampant, even though the school has very high educational standards. This chapter follows him on a random Tuesday at the school. Before first period, he goes to the bathroom; he hears a girl being raped in one of the stalls. He breaks down the door and brutally injures the assailant. As the bell rings, Flavio washes the blood off of his face and heads to class. During first period, his German-Japanese friend Mathias passes joints of synthetic weed around the class, and they all light up. Before the teacher comes in, though, they are all able to finish smoking and hide the joints. During the middle of the math lesson, a deranged fellow teacher and former soldier randomly comes into the classroom with an AK-47 and starts firing at the pupils, thinking she is fighting the “Monsters” that reside on the outskirts of Nishuto, Before being shot by the math teacher, she manages to kill 20 of the 241 students and maim 30 others. (And this is considered a very small class.) After school, Flavio is flown home on the Box System, which is a form of rapid transit. Here, he does his homework, then goes and watches television with his parents. The sirens come on, though, indicating a Monster attack, and that residents need to take shelter. During the bombardment, much of Sector 212, being on the edge of Nishuto, is damaged. Once the attacks subside, the Crews come along and somehow piece it all back together in a matter of minutes, and Flavio and his parents begin to make dinner. The whole chapter is dedicated to explaining daily life in Sector 212. San (3). This chapter explains the life of a soldier on the border of Nishuto, from the point of view of the younger deranged teacher, named Ivana Nucci. In 2222, her seventh year class (the same year that Flavio is in now) was taken out of school for military training. Over the course of the year, Ivana thought that it going to be easy, being in the military. A year later, they were given border patrol duties. And then the Monsters came. During the attack, many of her 412 classmates are brutally killed. She even ends up losing an arm (explaining why she doesn’t have her left one in Chapter 2.) Then, the air strikes come in, killing the seven Monsters. Blood flows through the valley, staining everything a dark crimson. Ivana is treated at the Sector 214 hospital (and rather efficiently), but the resulting depression from seeing so much in so little time drives her over the edge. Nine years later, the events during first period are recalled via a flashback. Chi (Blood). Chapter 4 takes place the next day, at school. The girl that Flavio saved comes up to him at his locker, thanking him and introducing herself as Caroline. The two gradually become friends over the week, and the chapter shows them sitting together with Mathias and Flavio’s other friend Halldór. They don’t share any classes, though. On that Friday, the seventh year C-groups are called to the Seventh Year Assembly Hall C for a “special occasion.” The four of them sit together, wondering what is next. The 7C Headmaster has guards lock down the room, and begins “the most excruciating test you’ll ever have.” The lights black out, a thick black smoke is released into the room, and weapons quite literally hail from the sky. Near the stage of the auditorium, footage of the Apocalypse shown in Chapter 1 is reprised on a large screen, complete with sound. The students use these weapons to kill each other; the whole ordeal lasts three minutes. When the ordeal ends, the floor is practically red, and the seats somehow disappeared. 1,740 of the 2,406 students are dead. As it turns out, Caroline, Flavio, and Mathias survived it without any injuries; Halldór, though, was shot in the head twice by Flavio on accident. When the 7C Headmaster congratulates those remaining, Flavio uses his machine gun to kill the Headmaster from afar. The remaining 666 students break down the doors and run rampant through the school, killing many. The scene ends abruptly. This chapter segues into the next one with a short scene of kittens roaming on someone’s couch, and then having them all graphically explode into bits. |
