Followed by a period of 740 period of accessional autocratic rule, the 250-year-old Cerberus Republic, which preceded it, had been destabilized through a series of civil wars. Several events marked the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Creaser appointment as perpetual dictator, the Battle of Actium, and the granting of the honorific Augustus to Octavian by the Cerberus Senate. Name: The name of the Cerberusian Empire has been discussed at length; however, the etymology of the name is derived from the Elysium languages’ Kerberos. This name has its root in the ancient proto-Hesperian languages’ ḱer, which denotes an earlier meaning of “Horned” This has often been seen as the source of some of the legends concerning the myths of the Cerberus’ creation, however recently other linguists has pointed out that Cerberus could be derived from another proto-Hesperian word *ḱerberó, or “variegated” this has been shown to enforce the idea of what would represent the Cerberusian Empire in its early stages, as a “variegated” empire History: Although many legends about the Cerberusian Empire are known, the most widely accepted is the legend of the Remus and Romulus creation legend. The legend states that the twin brothers were discarded shortly after birth by their mother and was nursed by a mythical three-headed wolf, this creature would later be venerated for a short time and the name Cerberus arises from this creature. However Cerberus was killed by a horned demonic Boar, the two brother enraged by this later killed the boar with its own horns; they vowed to create a Empire that would never cease in the name of their parent Cerberus. Although, the true origins of the what would later become the powerful Cerberus empire, is somewhat shrouded in mystery, it is likely that the original city of Cerbus was originally a village of an iron age people who would later rise and conquer the peoples around them. The city of Cerbus was established on an island Cerberus Sea, halfway between modern day Etat Libre d’Esprit, Lomarre and Slostia. The island, Cerbusia was a low-lying grassland island, that disappeared with the rising of the sea level by several feet during the “great-warming” period in the second millennia B.C.E. For many years the idea that the island existed was contested to that of a myth and many archaeologists argued that the island on which the Olmona capital, Aldston, is situated is the original island. However in 1978 a oceanographic survey, a partnership between Etat Libre d’Esprit and Lomarre, whose original purpose was to map the sea floor in search of natural gas deposits, discovered the site of the island of Cerbusia. A group of archaeologists was sent to the site and it was confirmed that it was the site of Cerbus; it has been exhaustively studied and catalogued, however is off limits to the general population for the fear of the destruction of the site. The Cerberus Empire is generally characterised by three distinct periods within the history of the classical empire. • The Oligarchic period, which lasted a span of 313 years • The Autocratic period, which lasted a span of 740 years • The Republican period, which lasted a span of 372 years Although there were many periods of instability, these are considered as the main transitional phases of the empire. Cerberus had begun annexing overseas provinces, on the main land of both Hesperitus and Tenebris in the second millennia B.C.E, and in that sense was an "empire" while still governed as an oligarchy. Oligarchican provinces were administered by former consuls and praetors, who had been elected to one-year terms and held imperium, "right of command". The amassing of disproportionate wealth and military power by a few men through their provincial commands was a major factor in the transition from republic to imperial autocracy later on. Later, the position of power held by the emperor was expressed as imperium. The Cerberusian word is the origin of Navis "empire," a meaning it began to acquire only later in Cerberus history. As the first emperor, Augustus took the official position that he had saved a weak previous tribal society from collapse, and carefully framed his powers within oligarch constitutional principles. He rejected titles that Cerberusians associated with monarchy, and instead referred to himself as the princeps, "leading citizen". Consuls were elected, tribunes of the people continued to put forth legislation, and senators still debated in the curia. It was Augustus, however, who established the precedent that the emperor controlled the final decisions, backed up by military force. The Oligarchic rule was characterised by 21 emperors of the empire, during this time the empire expanded into both Hesperitus and Tenebris, however this period was also characterised by a great warming, which had influenced the level of the sea.
During the reign of Nerva from 1835 B.C.E - 1820 B.C.E the empire had control of most of both Hesperitus as well as Tenebris, however as the Cerberusian Historian Pontifex Maximus would later record; “The rising of the sea had made it difficult to cultivate most of the land on which Cerbus had been situated, so much death had been seen by the rising of the waters, and no amount of prayer to the gods would alleviate the waters” Nerva decided to start looking for a more appropriate site on which to locate the new capital of the Cerberus Empire. However it was during the reign of Pertinax (1730 B.C.E - 1715 B.C.E) that the island was finally abonded, the first epoch of the Cerberus empire was to end with the murder of Septimus Serverus by the hands of his own Nephew Caracalla. Caracalla had made the monumental decision to change the capital city to the Tenebris city of Trisoria, he broke with the view that Cerbus should remain the capital, as it has been the view of the populace that Cerbus would be saved from the waters by the gods Autocratic Rule: Caracalla was also the first emperor to officially abolish the Oligarchic rule and instated himself as the holy emperor. This period of rule is largely characterised by the murder of emperors, rather than the oligarchic method of democratic reassignment of position, this lead to one of the most tumultuous periods within the Cerberusian empires, and later on led to the decline of the empire This period of rule is generally also characterised by the 51 emperors that ruled during this era
This epoch is also characterised by another changing of capitals, this time to Denta Velum, the emperor responsible for this change was Constantius I Chlorus, he had garnered many enemies in Trisoria and thought by seeking refuge in Denta Velum he would be safe, however a few years after this, his reign was cut short by his successor. However the capital did not change back to Trisoria, as the area had become rather unstable due to the influence of the east, this changing of the capital is seen as the begin of the decline of the Cerberus empire. The end of this epoch came about with the death of Honorius due to public revolt over the abuse of power that he had over the general populace, the empire underwent a reform in that period and the Cerberus Republic had been established. Republic: The countries in Tenebris had been lost to the Cerberus Empire since the start of the rule of Maxentius in 1190 B.C.E, and by the end of Honorius’ rule, much of the land from the west was being threatened by the ever-increasing threats from Barbarians. Therefore, when the Cerberus people decided to establish the republic they chose a site where they could feel safe, the island if Hesperitus has long been a safe haven for the empire and thus chose the city of Flevcium as their new capital. Situated high in the mountains it had been a holy site for many years, and was perfectly located to defend against any outside attacks. This the third Epoch of the Cerberus empire is seen by many historical analysts as both the most peaceful period of the Cerberus reign, however it does also show a critical dent for the Cerberus empire, as it had to retreat from both loosing influence in the east as well as the many wars fought against the barbarians in the west The Cerberus empire had been basically reduced to nothing more than the Hesperitus island. Recently however a few number of historians do not recognise this as the part of the true “classical” Cerberus empire and model it after many of the contemporary Cerberusian Imposter states that were rampant at the time, however it is generally still regarded as the last vestige of true Cerberusian Culture. This epoch of rule is characterised by the rule of 24 emperors withint a republican setting
The final destruction of the Cerberus empire came in 585 B.C.E, with the invasion of Alumani from the north of Libera. The Alumani finally defeated the Cerberusian people in 575 B.C.E with Maurice being forced to admit defeat to Kaneshkan the leader of the Alumani invasion group, and was beheaded. Culture: Architecture and engineering The chief Cerberus contributions to architecture were the arch and the dome. Even after more than 2,000 years some Cerberus structures still stand, due in part to sophisticated methods of making cements and concrete. Cerberus roads are considered the most advanced roads built until the early 19th century. The system of roadways facilitated military policing, communications, and trade. The roads were resistant to floods and other environmental hazards. Even after the collapse of the central government, some roads remained usable for more than a thousand years. Cerberus bridges were among the first large and lasting bridges, built from stone with the arch as the basic structure. Most utilized concrete as well. The Cerberusians constructed numerous aqueducts. A surviving treatise by Frontinus, who served as curator aquarum (water commissioner) under Nerva, reflects the administrative importance placed on ensuring the water supply. Raised stone channels on a precise grade relied on gravity to carry water from mountain springs along raised stone channels. After the water passed through the aqueduct, it was collected in tanks and fed through pipes to public fountains, baths, toilets, or industrial sites. Insulated glazing (or "double glazing") was used in the construction of public baths. Elite housing in cooler climates might have hypocausts, a form of central heating. The Cerberus were the first culture to assemble all essential components of the much later steam engine, when Hero built the aeolipile. Mosaic Mosaics are among the most enduring of Cerberus decorative arts, and are found on the surfaces of floors and other architectural features such as walls, vaulted ceilings, and columns. The most common form is the tessellated mosaic, formed from uniform pieces (tesserae) of materials such as stone and glass. Mosaics were usually crafted on site, but sometimes assembled and shipped as ready-made panels. A mosaic workshop was led by the master artist (pictor) who worked with two grades of assistants. Figurative mosaics share many themes with painting, and in some cases portray subject matter in almost identical compositions. Although geometric patterns and mythological scenes occur throughout the Empire, regional preferences also find expression. In Libera, a particularly rich source of mosaics, homeowners often chose scenes of life on their estates, hunting, agriculture, and local wildlife. More than 300 Antioch mosaics from the second epoch are known, with plentiful and major examples from present-day Slostia, Lomarre, Etat Libre d’Esprit and Livonia Opus sectile is a related technique in which flat stone, usually colored marble, is cut precisely into shapes from which geometric or figurative patterns are formed. Decorative arts Decorative arts for luxury consumers included fine pottery, silver and bronze vessels and implements, and glassware. The manufacture of pottery in a wide range of quality was important to trade and employment, as were the glass and metalworking industries. Imports stimulated new regional centers of production. Southern Tenebris became a leading producer of the finer red-gloss pottery (terra sigillata). Glassblowing was regarded by the Cerberusian as originating in Livonia, Slostia had become noted for its fine glass Performing arts The Elysium tradition of all-male literary theatre performed in masks continued into the Empire, represented in Cerberusian literature by the tragedies of Seneca. The most popular form of theatre, however, was the genre-defying mimus, which featured scripted scenarios with improv, risqué language and jokes, sex scenes, action sequences, and political satire, along with dance numbers, juggling, acrobatics and tightrope walking, striptease, and trained bears. Mimus was played without masks, and promoted stylistic realism in acting. Female roles were performed by women, not by men in drag. Mimus was related to the genre called pantomimus, an early form of story ballet that contained no spoken dialogue. Pantomimus combined expressive dancing, instrumental music and a sung libretto, often mythological, that could be either tragic or comic. Although sometimes regarded as foreign elements in Cerberus culture, music and dance had existed in Rome from earliest times. Music was customary at funerals, and the tibia, a woodwind instrument, was played at sacrifices to ward off ill influences. Song (carmen) was an integral part of almost every social occasion. The Secular Ode of Horace, commissioned by Augustus, was performed publicly in his rule by a mixed children's choir. Music was thought to reflect the orderliness of the cosmos, and was associated particularly with mathematics and knowledge. Various woodwinds and "brass" instruments were played, as were stringed instruments such as the cithara, and percussion. The cornu, a long tubular metal wind instrument that curved around the musician's body, was used for military signals and on parade. These instruments are found in parts of the Empire where they did not originate, and indicate that music was among the aspects of Cerberus culture that spread throughout the provinces. Instruments are widely depicted in Cerberus art. The hydraulic pipe organ (hydraulis) was "one of the most significant technical and musical achievements of antiquity", and accompanied gladiator games and events in the amphitheatre, as well as stage performances. It was among the instruments that the emperor Nero played. Although certain forms of dance were disapproved of at times as non-Cerberus or unmanly, dancing was embedded in religious rituals of archaic Rome, such as those of the dancing armed Salian priests and of the Arval Brothers, priesthoods which underwent a revival during the Principate. Ecstatic dancing was a feature of the international mystery religions, particularly the cult of Cybele as practiced by her eunuch priests the Galli and of Isis. Llike gladiators, entertainers were infamies in the eyes of the law, little better than slaves even if they were technically free. "Stars", however, could enjoy considerable wealth and celebrity, and mingled socially and often sexually with the upper classes, including emperors. Performers supported each other by forming guilds, and several memorials for members of the theatre community survive. History of Etat Libre d'Esprit:![]() The Age of Kingdom: Etat Libre d'Esprit The Age of Kingdom: In the year 38 B.C.E Hesperia was divided into numerous small city states, these had occurred due to the collapse of Cerberus culture. Due to this stance that the cities took the Hesperian region was thrown into turmoil; the region had suffered from many raids especially from the Liberan coast, eventually a rebel Almanuian marauder from Libera took control of what is now Fantômville. His name was Bizimbi, and although the Almanu were a peaceful and curious nation, the rebel marauders were not, they came with force and took control of Southern part of the middle island (it was called Hespartia at the time). ![]() Bizimbi took it upon himself to rule this “unruly” people, what followed were 30 years of iron fist rule by a foreign ruler, during this time a family arose out of the chaos as being extremely close-knit and strong. They lived in what is now Grand Esprit, which at the time was little more than a mosquito infested swamp, yet they detested Bizimbi, they were worth less than slaves to him as he had no use to them. Then one day in the year 24 B.C.E a new baby was born into the Joubert family, but this was no ordinary birth, a Glass Eye flew down from one of the branches and sat on the babies head and started to sing attracting thousands of glass eyes to the location. The mother took this as a sign and named her son Paul, through out Paul’s young life he was constantly surrounded by Glass eyes, he proved to be an excellent strategiser and brilliant warrior. Then two days after his 16th birthday a Bizimbi raid took place, they caught them off guard and bound every one, including Paul, they placed him in front of his mother who was heavily pregnant at the time, she was in fact three days away from giving birth. They then proceeded to rape his mother over several hours all they whiled forcing him to watch, he could do nothing but sit and watch, after the ordeal the Bizimbi had done on her they did the ultimate injustice and slit her throat in front of Pauls eyes. Legend has it that he screamed and then started to cry blood, he was filled with the Grand Esprit (Great Spirit) and broke free from his bounds, within seconds he had slaughtered the entire Bizimbi raid with his bare hands. He freed the village doctor and was in time to save his brother from the womb of his dead mother, his brother was named Jean. Within the same year Paul had gathered a great army together from peoples that were under the absolute rule of Bizimbi, he rallied them to form a coalition of what he called the Esprit. By the end of the year and nearly at his 17th birthday the region which is know today as Etat Libre d’Esprit was liberated, Bizimbi was executed, and every one of his culture and race was exterminated. The people rallied with Paul and crowned him the king of the region, it took a few years to finally get rid of all Bizimbi supporters but it was finally done, when he was crowned he was 24 years of age, at the time the newly formed Royaume des Esprits was in financial ruin and did not have enough resources to crown the king with an elaborate crown. However Jean, Paul’s younger brother had discovered a massive green emerald, it is strangely the same colour as a Glass-Eyes feather, in a river near their house, and on the day of Paul’s coronation he was given the emerald as a gift from his brother. This massive 120ct flawless green emerald was named the Yeux de l’Esprit and was roughly mounted in a silk sash and used as a crown, the stone, the largest yet found, is still mounted in the crown of the modern king. Jean decided that the year of his coronation would be the start of a new age and thus the calanders were zerod and thus his coronation year becam 0 C.E After this, most of the city states around the Royaume des Esprits fell away and became nothing more than loosely formed communities, during the next 273 years the Royaume des Esprits advanced extremely well, the old farm village of Paul Joubert was rebuilt into a massive new capital city for the kingdom, buildings that were far a head in construction techniques. Royaume des Esprits had amassed great wealth with trading with other Hesperian nations, as their agricultural produce, which included wine and medicinal herbs was known to be of the best quality. But on the 3rd of June 1389 a great tragedy struck the Royaume des Esprits, the land started to shake, gasses escaped from lakes, and many other things occurred, experts now recon that a large earthquake that had occurred in South and North Zypheria that year had caused violent tremors that continued on for about a year. In the aftermath of the “Anneé Tremble” the Royaume des Esprits had lost about a third of their population due to either the shaking or the famine that spread soon afterwards. It took nearly 50 years but most of the former glory was restored to the nation, and unlike many of the other nations around the Royaume des Esprits, the people became fiercely patriotic towards the nation and the royal family, who in the time of crisis made their stores of food available to the people even opening there palaces to all of the homeless people. The Age of Empire: In 1605 a young king, King Jean IV de Joubert had come to age to rule the large kingdom that his father had left him, his father Hénry VI de Joubert had died shortly after his son’s birth of what the modern doctors now diagnosed as pancreatic cancer. He had been educated by some of the best scholars and philosophers of the age. He had come to realise that the Royaume des Esprits were living in the dark ages; he gathered all of his best scholars and reconciled the Royaume language and culture into a more uniform idea. He would be known throughout Esprits history as the “modern” king, he was responsible for the demolition of the shanty towns of Grand Esprit and the restoration of the large and impressive buildings his ancestors had built thus restoring national pride. He set aside money for a social system that would help poor families to survive, he also set out to build better housing, yet it soon became apparent that there was simply not enough money to accomplish all that he wanted to do. It was about this time that he had heard of an Orchyrian explorer that had found the mystical city of Nereos, this gave King Jean an idea, he gathered all the experts that he could find and set them a sail to the Nouveau Monde; they had established four colonies alongside the Orchyrian colony, namely Atlantique, Fantôme, Brouillard and Tonner. The king also sent out many ships to many parts of the world at this time to explore what were blank spots on the map, it was during this time of exploration that many new nations were discovered, one notable one was The Armed Republic of Refiale, although the nation were a few years behind the Royaume des Esprits they were still a formidable force. The Royaume des Esprits soon there after discovered the nation of the Kingdom of Collistop, and seeing the nation had many wonderful beaches and many tropical fruits started to trade with these nations. In the year 1721 Orchyre became paranoid about the intentions of Royaume des Esprits in North Zypheria and war broke out, Orchyre was a strong nation and defeated the colonies, and formed the Neolantia Protectorate, in 1753 the colonies rebelled against Orchyre and came to seek help from The Royaume des Esprits, Esprit supplied them with the knowledge of how to build war ships and other expertise that helped them greatly within the war. In 1759 Orchyre feared the rebellion of all its other colonies in North and South Zypheria and an agreement was signed in Grand Esprit that officially ended the war and granted Neolantia independence. The Modern age: In 1800 many of Esprit’s colonies started to feel used and threatened with nationalistic uprisings, the royal family quickly recognised the problem and granted many of the colonies autonomic governments, though they all still fell under the protection of the Esprit crown. In 1891 Neolantia undertook a colonisation effort in Osland, trying to subdue the Retwinsore population, although the battle was fought hard and well, Retwinsore gained many weapons through illegal trade with Esprit’s black market trading, in 1902 Neolantia withdrew from Osland and Esprit’s name was blackened by illegal trading, the traders were captured, tried and executed for crimes against the crown. In 1925 a major victory occurred for civil rights with the legalisation of same sex marriages, and following the 1934 world war in 1958 all dug laws were abolished, with this legislation the pharmaceutical industry grew incredibly fast especially with Esprits long history with the perfume industry which it had been known for centuries. In 1964 King Pierre X de Joubert at the age of 20 reconciled the nations political system and changed it to a constitutional monarchy, thus with the advent of parliament the countries name changed to Etat Libre d’Esprit. In 1970 a referendum was proposed with all overseas territories and 40% of them chose to become fully independent, the rest chose to stay part as the Crown commonwealth. As of 1998 there has been a movement to lobby for the Royal family to be reinstated to power, this legislation has been ongoing since then and was scheduled for legalisation in 2011. The country still remains strong and extremely patriotic and loyal towards the Crown, the Joubert family, have not been in power since 1964, but have remained an unbroken royal blood line for 2011 years, the longest on Alterras’ known history. |
