On the morning of June 6th of the previous year I signed a contract with the United States Navy and took the Oath of Enlistment. On Tuesday, that oath comes due when I report to Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Illinois for the first step in my training as a United States Sailor. For the eight weeks that will follow I will not have any access to the internet, and thus both Nation States and Alterra. I wish I had more time to help shape our little world, and at the end of Recruit Training I will have some free time with the internet to begin participating once again. Until then, it has been fun and I will miss the diversion our region provided greatly. Thank you. Future Sailor Psyonia, United States Navy Edited by Psyonia, Mar 7 2011, 07:14 AM.

Don't take anything they say too seriously. Most of it's just to see how well you handle stress and if it helps, think of it as a game. Good luck! |

Good luck Psycho... I hear they let you keep your phones so with a lil imagination you can bogart a lil here & a lil there... and yes, to my eternal disgust even my frakkin army is allowing that these days. 'Family support being vital to the mental well being' etcetcetcbullsh*t. You may be surprised, or not, with weekend computer time... so here's hoping we may see your swabbie @$$ before then. If not then we'll be here... now avoid the whores in Subic, don't bother with a strip bar in Hong Kong and for God's sake stay away from the Somali coast... I hear they have pirates there! ; ) |

We were allowed our phones when we got our family calls, but that was it. Computer time sounds nice though... >.> I'm pretty sure the suicide rate has jumped, so that's why they're giving more phone time. I heard of at least two attempts from my buddies when I was in tech school and there have been two suicides at the base here in the last month. *shrugs* Edited by Demoness, Mar 8 2011, 02:14 AM.

Can't address the suicide rates... inexplicable to me. I know I know... 'the War'... been there, done that... twice. Border duty back when we faced the USSR across Fulda Gap and we had plenty of casualties... stress, it gets 'somewhat irksome' the third or fourth time you have to watch some civvie, shouting for help all the way, get gunned down by rifle & machinegun fire... and you aren't allowed to do dick. Call me an ignorant old school bastard, but IMO we'd be better served by -removing- all forms of outside supports from training... seemed to have less problems when the weeding out process forced trainees to cope & deal on their own, with only their fellow troops for any form of support. Miserable, sure it was... so are months in the jungle or desert (I did both), people actively trying to kill yer sorry butt and the general feeling that your fearful leaders have no frakkin' clue what they're doing. I was told when I went through basic that we were amazingly coddled... told this by my uncles who had served in WW2 & Korea as well as my brother who visited Vietnam a few times. I couldn't imagine how... now I can. Perspectives change... but if we put enough stress onto a trainee that he breaks, then it was almost a certainty that he'd have broken in or after combat. I love the way my friend can talk to her son, now in AIT, daily on Facebook... but it boggles my mind more than a little. Oh the bloody stress that him losing his phone for a WEEK caused... for him and her. And he's training to be a grunt! Going to 10th Mountain in 10 days... and there was much weeping & wailing when he found that he wasn't getting leave because he used it between Basic & AIT to go home for Christmas... ??!!?? She's an old friend, he's a kid trying to be a soldier. Neither of them cared much for me saying he just had to suck it up & drive on... but at least the kid admitted to his mom that I was right. Maybe I'm wrong about the new training... I hope so. Kid gives me some hope that maybe it isn't quite as bad as I think it is. He may have whinged, but at the end he did sigh and apparently drive on. All that aside, I look forward to hearing all about it from Psycho when he's able... another perspective from a new minted polywog may add something to my perspective. Sorry, *Rant mode off again*... |
