Sports: The Florinthian people are avid sports fans, with several Florinthian leagues being the epitome of their sport. The most successful sports associations are the Florinthian Football League for arena (American) football, and the Florinthian Football Association for association football. Both of these leagues are the top leagues in their sport, and athletes from around the world come to Florinthus to compete in them. Association Football (soccer) Association football is the most popular sport in the nation, and is particularly dominant in the Florinthian half of the confederation. It is still quite popular in Galeae, but not quite to the extent that it is in the Florinthian states. On the international level, Florinthus currently has an association football squad for both men and women, and is a part of FAFA. The men's squad is one of the most successful squads in the world, recently winning the first ever FAFA World Cup. The women's squad hasn't seen the success that the men's squad has, but still holds its own against most squads. The Florinthians have an unofficial rivalry with the Demonessians, and the matches between the two nations are always particularly entertaining. Arena Football (American/gridiron football) Arena Football is another popular sport throughout Florinthus. The Florinthian Football League (FFL) is the top league for arena football in the Florinthian states, and is also the premiere arena football league in Alterra. When the FFL was first formed in 1970, over 30 amatuer/semi-pro teams joined the league. Since then, many have disbanded or reverted to amatuer play. As of the 2012 season, the FFL has 16 teams based in cities across the Florinthian states, and they are arranged into four divisions. The league has plans to expand the league though, and is loking at the option of having a secondary league below the current one, so that players who have less skill can have a better opportunity to make it to the top league, as well as having a better way to target smaller media-hubs.
Ice Hockey Hockey is another popular sport, although coverage of it is not as widespread as some of the others. Hockey has often been called the association football of Galeae, as it is most popular there. The FHL is the premiere hockey league in Florinthus. It features 12 teams that are broken into two divisions, north and south. At the end of the regular season, the teams are seeded based on their division rank into a playoff bracket. On the international level, both Florinthus and Galeae have squads. The two play in the Confederation Classic, which has been played every year in January for more than 50 years. Traditionally, the Galeaen squad has been more skilled than their Florinthian counterparts, although in recent times the ability gap has been narrowing. The Florinthus team has a rivalry with the Lomarre international hockey team, and plays them each year in the Flo-Marre Classic, a five match exhibition competition that takes place in both nations. Florinthus beat the Lomarre squad 3-2 in 2013, taking home the competition trophy. Edited by Florinthus, May 2 2013, 11:59 AM.

History: Eighteenth Century (1700-1799) 1725 CE: -August: Georg Klenn, a scholar in Tarleton, claims to have recieved a vision from Yua, who is angry at his followers for disobeying him. He records his vision in book titled: "The Fates of the Sinful Church".The book goes into great detail about the problems with the Trivense Universal Church, and the wrath that Yua will bring upon them if they do not denounce their sinful ways. Klenn sends copies of his book to many Yeshuite scholars across Florinthus, most notably Lennox Daien in Balzary. -November: Georg Klenn is arrested by the Tarleton officials for "spreading heresy and lies amongst the flock". Klenn denies ever having done such a crime, but is still convicted. -December: Georg Klenn is burned at the stake by Tarleton authorities. Holy Prince Deryn IV Wendyll of Tarleton orders that all copies of Klenns book be destroyed. It is unknown as to how many books survived the purge. 1729 CE: -February: Lennox Daien, a Yeshuite scholar from Balzary posts his "Statements of Reform" on the doorway of the Cathedral of Blessed Tyrus in Lein, the capital of Balzary. His "Statements of Reform" are heavily inspired by the book "The Fates of the Sinful Church", written by Georg Klenn several years prior. -April: King Corin II Aberdeen of Balzary meets with Lennox Daien and agrees to adhere to his teachings. The King declares the young Daienist faith the official religion of the Kingdom of Balzary, with only minor upheaval. With newfound support of the King, Daien begins spreading his ministry beyond Balzary. -May: Lennox Daien begins his trek from Balzary to Fenridge, preaching anywhere he can get the chance. Many Florinthians take a liking to his new ideas, and begin to follow Daien on his trip. The path he took from Lein, Balzary to Fen, Fenridge is now known as the Holy Pilgrimage of Daienism, and is considered a requirement for all true believers. -June: In response to the recent religious changes, Holy Prince Deryn IV Wendyll of Tarleton declares Lennox Daien a heretic to the Universal Church, as well as declaring a Holy War on the newfound Daienist faith. His soldiers are ordered to root out and kill any Daienists in his province. He writes letters to the other Universal rulers in Florinthus, asking them to do the same. -July: Lennox Daien stops in Denil, meeting with King Andrew X Patrim of Denil. The King is skeptical of Daien, but admits that his points against the church are valid. Daien stays in Denil for two weeks, and by the end of his stay, the King agrees to follow Daiens teachings. -August: Fearing that the fire is growing to fast to put out, agents under the authority of the Universal Church of Tarleton begin an aggressive manhunt for Lennox Daien. Meanwhile, Daien and his followers arrive in Fen, Fenridge, where they convice Duke Darius VIII Cressel of Fenridge to join the rapidly spreading Daienist faith. After a weeks time, Daien leaves Fenridge, moving inland towards Tarleton. -September: Daien is captured by Tarleton soldiers while preaching in the city of Tarleton itself! -October: After a brief trial, Lennox Daien is burned at the stake, a heretic, by order of Holy Prince Deryn IV Wendyll of Tarleton. The Kingdom of Balzary declares a three day period of mourning. 1730 CE: -January: King Corin II Aberdeen of Balzary calls for a meeting in Balzary, where the young Daienist following, still a disorderly band of faithfuls, can come together to establish its beliefs, as well as a heirarchy. This meeting is called the First Council of Lein of 1729, and the religious leaders at the Council established the core beliefs of Dainism, as well as the Church's heirarchy, which still stands today. -May: The First Council of Lein of 1729 concludes. The first Patriarch of the Daienist Reformed Church, Clement I, is selected by the Council. The Council also decides to hold further Council's between every five and ten years. 1731 CE: -June: Holy Prince Deryn IV Wendyll of Tarleton dies of natural causes. His twenty-three year old son, Mede, is selected by the Bishop of Tarleton to become Holy Prince. He is crowned Holy Prince Mede I Wendyll of Tarleton on March 20, 1731. Mede is even more zealous than his father, and makes it his goal to destroy the Daienist heresy once and for all. His often vicious treatment of Daienists throughout his reign earned him the moniker, Mede "the Cruel". 1732 CE: -December: Holy Prince Mede I Wendyll of Tarleton issues an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Balzary, the Kingdom of Denil, and the Duchy of Fenridge: Your heresy is a black stain on this land, bringing curses of Yua upon our peoples. Cleanse yourselves of this heresy or we, Yua's instruments, shall cleanse it with the blood of your people. 1733 CE: -March: The official start of the Florinthian Civil War. Holy Prince Mede I Wendyll of Tarleton declares holy war on the Kingdom of Balzary, the Kingdom of Denil, and the Duchy of Fenridge, in an effort to cleanse their heresy. Nineteenth Century (1800-1899) 1876 CE: -February: The Sixth Galeaen War begins as the Kingdom of Galeae invades Walford and Hillingdon. 1879 CE: -June: The Grand Army of Galeae under General Edward Le'Saem defeats a numerically superior Third Coalition army at the Battle of Lindon. Coalition general George Mackey is killed in the battle. 1886 CE: -March: Galeaen General Edward Le'Saem is killed by a chance rifle shot during the Siege of Fremont. Beheaded, the Galeaen army is routed by Third Coalition forces and is eventually destroyed. Over the coming months, the Galeaen advance is halted and subsequently turned back. -April: In the wake of Edward Le'Saem's death, Frederick De'Lae is named leader of the retreating Galeaen armies. He is defeated twice in one week during the first and second battles of Kent, where the Galeaens hoped they would make a stand to halt the Coalition army and continue their advance. The defeated Galeaens begin a long retrea back to Galeae, known as "Frederick's Failure". -September: The remnants of the Galeaen Grand Army cross the border into the Kingdom of Galeae, with the armies of the Third Coalition right behind them. 1888 CE: -October: The Treaty of Denil is signed, establishing the Confederation of Florinthus, and finally bringing an end to the Florinthian Civil War. Twentieth Century (1900-1999) 1909 CE: April: Pope Invictus III of the Trivense Universal Church meets with Patriarch Nikolis IX at the Second Piedmont Convention. Both officially end the prejudice of each others followers. Twenty-First Century (2000-Present) 2013 CE: -January: The Confederation decides to leave the Alterran Assembly, favoring the newly formed Hesperian Confederation of Independent Nations. Mr. Mikel Ve'Saan, the ex-delegate to the AA is appointed the new delegate to the HCoIN Council. The decision results in the end of the anti-AA protests that had rose up periodically since the Confederation first joined the Assembly. Edited by Florinthus, Jun 7 2013, 01:12 PM.
