Ok, how about this for Obama: Since taking office he has slapped two of our main allies in the face by siding against them in regards to foreign relations (Israel first with the 1967 borders and then the UK by siding with Argentina in regards to the Falklands War). Despite what he said on the campaign trail he has rubber stamped the PATRIOT act, not once, but twice. He has also gone as far as to strengthen certain aspects of the act. He played up LBGT rights while on the trail as a big goal, but has flopped around like a fish out of water since then. The economic stimulus plan was thrown out there without much guidance at all and as such was still used in many pathetic pork projects. Libya borders on a violation of the war powers act after the massive criticism of the Iraqi conflict. Should I go on? >.> As far as the link is concerned, I'd hit a police officer every winter if I were homeless to spend the winter in a warm jail. >.> |

Oh american political discussions how I adore thee! I'm from Canada so there isn't much heated political debates unless it's with my American freind, oh well time to go watch Glen Beckett (is he a serious person or you know joking about stuff, because if he's serious he's damn messed up)

You mean Glen Beck? Sadly, many people do take him seriously, mostly the far-right wingers who think Obama isn't even a U.S. citizen. I don't like to go into politics because, I admit, I'm not savvy enough to enter the debate. I do have opinions, but I've stated them before in a different thread and I don't want to bog this community down with a potentially hot-button issue. |

Emerald, my respect for you just went up ![]()
Completely agreed on all points, especially on PATRIOT, Israel, LBGT, and Libya. Especially especially Libya. But to be fair on the stimulus package, I'm not sure if it's even possible to get smooth, working legislation through Congress when you opponents are acting like 4th graders. I'm not saying that Obama is flawless. I hate a LOT of what he does. But he has done good things too, which he should get credit for. Also, it irks me to a great extent when I hear the large amount of bs that comes over from the right about him. And it downright pisses me off when he get's blamed for the tribulation that was the Bush Administration. |

I didn't trust him from the get go, but I was willing to give him a shot. So far my impression of him has not improved. His "change" is to remain just like every other politician out there, say what people want to hear on the trail and screw 'em once you win. I think that the economic stimulus could have worked if put out there properly, but they just wanted to ram it out without major guidelines on what it could be spent on. Hell, I think dividing the stimulus amount amongst the taxpayers as part of their returns would've had a better effect on the bloody economy at this point. That is, wait for everyone to file their Federal returns, then everyone that filed gets $X. Spending would have gone up and when people spend, people get jobs to produce and sell materials. State sales taxes and the like would have increased, leading to more government funds from taxes to go toward infrastructure. I know it's probably a LOT more complex than that, but eh.The "Obamacare" issue is just another one where I think it was just rolled out as law without fine tuning. Most of what I see in the law could've been done with improvements to Medicaid/Medicare instead of this new law. Meh, I honestly wish that I could sit here and say that the administration proved my suspicions wrong, but they've just pulled it down further. Then again, starting off by putting a bunch of tax-dodgers in your cabinet isn't really the best way to go to distance yourself from the previous administration's issues (*looks at Cheney*). Of course, I don't expect to see someone who's platform I fully support to win anytime soon. Well, unless we can get Bill, Ted, Marty, and the Doc to go pick up a few of the founding fathers for us. Again, I'm forced to agree for the most part. However, it seems safe to say that at least things aren't getting worse (or at least, not getting worse at an increased rate). *cough*implying lesser of two evils *cought* |

That's another thing I hate. I hate that we really only have two choices. I want someone to win based on their platform, not because they're right or left. Too many people out there still vote straight ticket and I hate that. We have the ability and the access to see what our representative's platforms are. Investigate! I may be a right leaning moderate libertarian, but I'll vote for someone on the left if I think their platform is what we need. Then again, I've seen some Democrats who are more conservative than the Republican running against them. So weird. *shakes head* Scary to agree with someone on the right, isn't it? ![]() I like being able to have an intelligent debate with someone about issues. Our viewpoints are relatively different, but I'm pretty sure that in the end we both want our home to be safe and our lives to be unimpeded. *shrug* Just wish our lawmakers could get along as well as some of the debates I've had. lol |
