Internal Bureau of Investigations (IBI)![]() The Internal Bureau of Investigations is a governmental agency belonging to the Canusian Department of Justice that serves as both a federal criminal investigative body and an internal intelligence agency (counterintelligence). The branch has investigative jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crime. The IBI's main goal is to protect and defend Canusia, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the Commonwealth, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners. Overview Director: Sue Bromley Headquarters: Jorgan Strijker Memorial Building, Tharkad, Neues Zuhause Members: 31,151 Major Offices: 6 Budget: ~$7.8 billion (₡15.76 billion) Currently, the IBI's top investigative priorities are: --Protect Canusia from terrorist attacks --Protect Canusia against foreign intelligence operations and espionage --Protect Canusia against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes --Combat public corruption at all levels --Protect civil rights --Combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises --Combat major white-collar crime --Combat significant violent crime International Special Intelligence Service (ISIS) ![]() The International Special Intelligence Service (ISIS) is an independent civilian intelligence agency of the Canusian government. It is an executive agency and reports directly to the Director of National Intelligence, with responsibility for providing national security intelligence assessment to senior Canusia policymakers. Intelligence-gathering is performed by non-military commissioned civilian intelligence agents, many of whom are trained to avoid tactical situations. ISIS also oversees and sometimes engages in tactical and covert activities at the request of the Alpha Councillor of Canusia. Often, when such field operations are organized, the Canusia military or other warfare tacticians carry these tactical operations out on behalf of the agency while ISIS oversees them. Although intelligence-gathering is the agency's main agenda, tactical divisions were established in the agency to carry out emergency field operations that require immediate suppression or dismantling of a threat or weapon. ISIS was founded in part for intelligence-gathering as a means to prevent a declaration of war based on erroneous conceptions. Energy Canusia is one of many nations at the forefront of energy technology, making full use of nuclear power, as well as the renewable resources of hydro-electric dams and solar panels. Nuclear ![]() Canusia employs the use of 39 Nuclear Power Plants, supplying nearly 41% of the country's energy needs. All of the nation's reactors are privately owned by energy companies, and overseen and regulated by the Commonwealth's Department of Energy. These reactors are state-of-the-art, enabling a number of failsafes to prevent catastrophic failure in the event of an accident, or terrorist attack. Canusian research into the workings of nuclear power began after the first nuclear power plant came online in the mid-20th century. Energy companies across the country were very interested in the prospect of what then seemed like limitless power. While originally expensive, investors continued to provide funds for the development of Canusia's nuclear infrastructure, resulting in plants coming online as early as 1967. At first, these plants were owned by the federal government, but as their operation was streamlined, commercial energy companies began to purchase the plants to supplement Canusia's growing need for electricity. As the Commonwealth has no natural reserves of Uranium for such projects, it is forced to import the required material from other nations, such as Amarek. Hydroelectric ![]() Dominant in the southern states of Canusia, where the rivers flow year-round, and do not freeze over during winter. They provide a continuous supply of electricity to dozens of towns and cities, providing 29% of the power requirements for the states of Felderia and Barcelona, as well as the southern regions of Hochgebirge. Wind Turbines ![]() Wind power is steadily growing in use around the Commonwealth, as the use of solar power is only effective through half the year. The wind turbine, however, is able to provide power year-round, with a great deal of wind provided by storms, the northern climate, and the rapid cooling of air over the World's Cap mountains. All turbines within the Commonwealth are the vertical-axis variety, allowing for more units to be placed in an area. They range from the large turbines located on a city's edge, or smaller versions mounted atop buildings to provide added power, and help lessen the power requirement of towns and cities. Natural Gas ![]() While much of Canusia's energy needs are met through more renewable or long lasting sources, the large reserves of natural gas provide the country with the rest of the required power. While being the oldest energy source still in use, natural gas has begun to be phased out in response to growing use of power sources that do not require fossil fuels. Fusion (Experimental, currently under research) ![]() With fossil fuels dangerous to use, and nuclear fission plants a constant management issue, the Commonwealth of Canusia has been researching the ability to harness a power similar to the reaction that takes place in a star. By using Hydrogen atoms fusing into heavier Helium atoms, scientists hope to harness the power given off by the reaction to create a new power source, one far more efficient than any previously discovered means; and one that will virtually never run out of the required fuel. While the process itself is simple to understand, putting it to practical, continued use is another matter entirely. The Commonwealth projects that by the year 2041, the first Fusion Power Plant will be operational, and ready to supply Canusia with its much needed power at a fraction of the cost of its current infrastructure. Religion Because of the nature in which the people who would settle Canusia first fled their homeland, religion has been seen as more of a burden than a blessing. As such, the government takes no formal stance on any religion, taxing them as it would any other business. The population of Canusia is largely athiest or agnostic, with only a small percentage claiming to belong to any religion at all. However, all religions are tolerated within the Commonwealth, with laws protecting the rights of the people to have freedom of worship. The largest religious denomination in Canusia is made up of the nature-worshipping religion practiced by the Danann thousands of years ago. |

Space Travel While commercial companies maintain a private line of launch vehicles for satellites, the Commonwealth's Navy oversees much of Canusia's means of travel beyond the reaches of the atmosphere. The Naval-Aerospace Administration (NAA) is primarily responsible for the research and conduction of research into long term colonization of other worlds, as well as research into future asteroid mining operations. Among the programs are also those of future defense systems, as the need for weaponized craft ![]() The space shuttles Freedom and Enterprise are Canusia's primary link to the stars currently. Maintained by naval crews working alongside private firms, they are constantly updated with the latest technological equipment to ensure success. ![]() Anchor 1 is Canusia's primary orbital station. In current geosynchronous orbit over Tharkad, the station provides insights and a home for 18 astronauts. Currently undergoing further construction, Anchor 1 is being retrofitted to begin production of future spacecraft, with future plans calling for it to become a waystation on the way to lunar bases. Holidays Though Canusia is a largely secular state, with the majority of the population either atheist or agnostic, Holidays are still seen as a big part of the year, stemming from generations of tradition, and an overall willingness to celebrate. Neue Jahre (New Years) December 31st/January 1st New Years day is a time of celebration for the entire country, stemming from the founding of Canusia, and the subsequent fight for survival in the far north. It is celebrated from the night of December 31st, and culminates in a countdown during the final seconds of the new year. Large amounts of alcohol and snack foods are common among celebrations, with fireworks displays being a central focus at the final countdown. Frühlingstauwetter (Spring Thaw) Last full week of March, or first full week of April (weather dependent) Spring Thaw is a week of celebration which stems from the early colonies, where the end of the harsh northern winter is heralded with a week of outdoor activities. In modern times, this has evolved into a carnival-like atmosphere, with entire parks or empty lots being covered in outdoor games, concession booths, and rides. Veteran Tag (Veteran's Day) May 1st Veteran's Day is the celebration of the active and retired members of the Commonwealth Defense Force, in thanks for their sacrifice and hard work. Celebrations involve small parties, and large organized parades. Gründungstag (Founding Day) July 1st Founding Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Articles of Union, which banded the six member states into one country. The celebrations usually involve outdoor cooking, mainly with barbecues and grills of various types, which culminates in large fireworks displays approximately one hour after sunset. Ernte Woche (Harvest Week) 2nd week of October Harvest Week celebrates the end of the growing season, and the benefits of the year's crop. More popular in the southern states of Barcelona and Felderia, it involves a week of celebration, usually involving alcohol among adults, and field games for all. The celebration closes with a large feast, ranging from individual families to entire towns. Winters Festmahl (Winter's Feast) December 20th An old tradition hearkening back to the Slostian refugees sailing to Canusia, Winter's Feast is seen as a time for families to gather close and give thanks for their lives and livelihood. Celebrations often involve the colorful decoration of the house, including a heavily decorated tree, the exchange of gifts, and a large dinner which traditionally involves elk or deer. |
