History
(1974 BCE-1795 CE) Pre-Revolution Veldria
Spoiler: click to toggle Cerberus EmpireThe known history of Veldria begins in 1974 BCE, when Cerberusian scouts began to survey the lands for future conquest and eastward expansion. Landings of Cerberusian forces occurred around 1930 BCE and small military ports gradually grew over the next 400 years, with the small port of Veldria in particular by the discovery of a nearby source of gold. Cerberusian forces continued to expand the empire eastward until they reached the Hrystran sea and by 1600 BCE three major cities had developed along the coast; Veldria, Alexin and Karnaca, all of which were shielded by the Vespyrian mountains from the barbarians further inland. Veldria became the dominant city of Tenebris, known as 'the Gateway to Tenebris'. Great structures were built throughout the city including in 1443 BCE, the Great Tower of Quantitas at the center of ancient Veldria, which still stands today. The city came to be known for it's classical white buildings, often adorned with copious amounts of gold on their exterior and interiors. White stone was exported from the town of Albus near Karnaca, which is now the town of Whitecliff ( see map). However, Veldria, and to a larger degree Vekta and Tenebris, became less successful as time wore on. This was primarily due to the growing divisions in the Cerberus Empire between east, west, north and south, the chaos wrought by the rule of weak Emperors such as Severus II and Maximian in the face of northern and Xian barbarians and, ultimately, the barbarian threat to Hesperitus itself. It was for this reason that Emperor Constantine I gradually pulled Cerberusian forces back until finally, at the beginning of the reign of Maxentius, all Cerberusian forces were pulled out. Barbarians quickly overran large tracks of land and by 1182 BCE there were no reports reaching Veldria from beyond the Vespyrian mountains, not even from Vekta Ulterior. In 1181 BCE, contact was lost with Karnaca and Albus and in 1180, Veldria itself fell in the Battle of Veldria. All of Vekta had fallen to Barbarian forces by 1150 BCE. Imperial Veldria at it's height.City State and EmpireVeldria began to stabilise again after 600 BCE and in 509 BCE, the Senate of the People and Veldria (SPV) was formed, modelled on the old Cerberusian Senate which had collapsed 60 years prior. This senate exerted control over not just the city, but the surrounding area. This rise in power was noticed by the City state of Driscol and a rivalry ensued between the two. Driscol had been the center of power and wealth in the region for the previous 3 centuries. This rivalry culminated in 467 BCE when a Driscolian fleet blockaded the port of Veldria in response to an escalation in the degrading relations of the two nations. In the ensuing war, Veldrian wealth and land military strength proved to be superior. Driscol ceded it's colonies along the White coast(the region surrounding Whitecliff), south of Veldria. Veldria continued it's rise, however Driscol still posed a threat and a second Driscolian war occurred in 325 BCE, with Veldria again proving successful, now seizing all major settlements east of Driscol. At this time, Veldria began using it's military to subdue raiding Harad tribes, expanding it's territory into the great woodlands towards the Vespyrian mountains. Another war occurred in 210 BCE with what was left of the Driscolian Empire. The Driscolian military collapsed into the city of Driscol, unable to face the Veldrian military on the field of battle. With this, the siege of Driscol began and was only ended 6 months later following the massive deployment of siege ladders. The battle lasted 6 days and was a bloody slaughter but ultimately ended with the capture and capitulation of Driscol to Veldria, ending the 250 year rivalry between the two city states. With the conclusion of the war, Veldria now controlled all of the province of Griscol. EmpireThe Harad tribes of Serkonos and Tyvia were now the primary threat to the Veldrian Empire, prompting legions to be sent out to pacify resistance and assimilate the tribal populations into the Empire. Primary focused upon the Region of Tyvia, over 200 years the region was colonised and tamed by the Empire, with towns such as Tamarak and Alexin becoming wealthy center's of trade in the North. Similar expansion occurred in Serkonos, where small city states had begun to form along the coast. This allowed Veldria to move in with less effort expended upon assimilation. The city of Veldria was now home to 800,000 citizens, a huge amount for the time, but Veldria's glories could not last forever. DeclineThe Veldrian military had realised it's extreme power and the possible influence it could wield over the empire. In 152 CE a general by the name of Corvo Attano, set out to end the republic and install himself a supreme leader of the Empire. With the personal support of his armies from Serkonos he tried to march upon Veldria. However, his progress was stopped at the walled city of Driscol where an republican army came out to meet him. A 6 year stalemate ensued, with both sides attempting to outflank the other party, sending raiding parties to attack farms and villages that were supplying goods to the enemy. However, in 158 CE a disease known as the rat plague occurred killing hundreds of thousands across the Empire. This was immediately followed by a famine, wiping out yet more people. In 160 CE, Tyvia declared independence in two separate places, resulting in the Tyvian War of the Warlords in which the two halves of Tyvia fought each other for control of the region. Encouraged by this, Various cities declared independence from Whitecliff to Driscol in Griscol to Bastillitan and Karnaca in Serkonos. As Imperials and Republicans collapsed in on themselves, the senate was dissolved by the head of the city's garrison who assumed direct control of the city, ending the 650 year empire and plunging the region into another Era of Anarchy. The decent into anarchy, the collapse of the Empire in 161 CE.Dark EraFollowing the abolition of the Senate there is very little recorded history. From what we do know, the Empire continued to break up into rivalling factions. This millennium of darkness is often referred to as the Dark Era. The dark Era ended in 976 CE with the ascension of the first King of Veldria to the throne, Luther Kaldwin. Luther I secured the area around the city of Veldria and began reincorporating previously owned regions back into the Kingdom. Progressively, over the next 100 years Griscol was brought back under the control of the city of Veldria. This period was also marked by the dramatic rise in the power of the Trivenze Universal Church's power, as shown by the creation of a missionary force in the Kingdom in 1101 called the Order of the blessed Carthan. The Dark Era ended with the Esprit conquest of Veldria, caused by the missionary actions of the Order. The instalment of Prince Lothair Joubert as king and the fall of King Teip I ended the political dominance of Yeshuanity and began the espritisation of Veldria. Veritas once again became the state religion. The Kingdom of VeldriaFollowing the Kaldwin coup of 1142, Griscol was consolidated and fortified. For 100 years, castles were built and loyalties ensured. It was esyablished that in order to become successful and gain the kings favour, one had to either support veritas or speak esprit. By 1256 the Veldrian Kingdom had stabilised and found itself surrounded by other strong kingdoms. However, raiding by these kingdoms following 1300 CE lead to decreasing relations with them and to war. In 1362 Veldria invaded the Serkoni Kingdoms, aiming to incorporate them into the Kingdom. This was achieved in 1398 with the Balfour Treaty. The War of the Swans followed in 1420, when House Caronite challenged the reigning Kings right to rule the Kingdom. This civil war lasted 57 years, but was finally ended in 1477 when the last of House Caronite was destroyed by House Kaldwin. The next phase of Veldrian expansion occurred in 1537, when Veldrian King Tywin declared war and attempted to siege the capital of Tyvia. While this was a failure it was not the last attempt by Veldria to take the Kingdom. A series of wars followed with Veldria gaining modest amounts of land in each one. However in 1564 the sacking and burning of Baleton prompted a treaty to be signed returning the borders to how they were in 1537. Tyvian raiders however paid little regard to the treaty and another war began in 1568, with this attempt proving altogether more successful than previous attempts at annexation. Only the northern tip of Tyvia remained independent. This was also annexed in 1588 following a short war. Following the ascension of Tywin II in 1589, Veldria returned to Yeshuanity and became very close to the church in Trivenze. A government declaration in 1601 announced the beginning of the Second Empire. The ceremony announcing the creation of the Second Empire. The Second EmpireBy 1601, the Second Empire had borders similar to the First Empire's at the height of it's power. However, the power of the Monarchy had grown and it's absolute rule was a source of contention for several dukes, who wished to have greater control over their duchy's. The result of this contention was the Baleton 7, a group of noblemen who sought to reduce the Kings power while increasing the power of the Privy Council. Rallying the peasantry of their duchy's to their cause. In 1648 a Peasant revolt occurred, lead by the Baleton 7. Royalist forces struck back and within 7 months the Baleton revolt had been crushed by royalist forces. However nationalist revolts also occurred at the same time in Tyvia and Serkonos, resulting in another 15 months of fighting. It should be noted that this was the first mass use of gunpowder by the Veldrian Military. Greed and RevolutionAttempts at annexing the Kingdom of Morley occurred throughout the late 1600's. Veldria invaded Morley in 1678, 1684, 1698 and 1702, all of which were unsuccessful. A period of Enlightenment followed known as the Era of Enlightenment. This era featured the rise of Philosophy with prominent ideas challenging the established authority that had ruled Veldria for 1000 years. More rational, secular ideas became popular such as democracy, fairness, equality and scepticism. Secret societies were created, such as the Abbey of Everyman dedicated to the violent implementation of these ideas. At the same time, inequalities rose due to the industrialisation of Veldria. This rise in inequalities and the propagation of enlightened ideas eventually built up until they were compounded by famine and an indignant monarch in the form of King Horbury IX. These factors exploded into the First Glorious Revolution. King Horbury IX, the last King of Veldria
(1796 CE-1797 CE) The Glorious Revolutions
Spoiler: click to toggle Build upThe factors that contributed to the Glorious Revolution had been building for a great deal of time prior to the actual event. The formation of the Abbey of Everyman in 1756 shows that at least 50 years before the revolution there was strong sentiment in certain circles for the abolition of all vestiges of tradition and authority. To a certain degree, the Baleton Revolt of 1648 called for the reduction in traditional absolute rule and is seen by many as the beginning of the republican movement. However, the actual build up of tensions prior to the First Glorious Revolution has to be put down to a large degree to the worsening economic situation of Veldria. Particularly low rainfall in the years 1794-1796 had lead to a 2 year famine, starving the peasantry. While the people grew hungry, the King and his court continued to live their extravagant lifestyles, untouched by the ravages of hunger or the destruction of the Famine. The Future leader of the First Republic, Arthur Scargill, made the following charge in a republican pamphlet, aimed at the royal court. "Do you know why there are so many needy people? It is because your luxurious existence devours, in one day, the substance of a thousand men."This difference in living standards was assisted by industrialisation, which had devalued the work of the lower class and cheapened their wages while the already rich aristocracy continued to make gains of off their labour. This early socialist thought bred a deep seeded hatred of the upper classes, their voice and their privilege. Another factor in the build up to revolution was the weak nature of King Horbury IX. Initially unable to produce children, fat and indecisive, he was seen as the epitome of the privileged elite. He was often mocked in pamphlets distributed amongst the lower classes, as was the queen, who was seen as the height of opulence. Early EventsTo fix the rising crisis, King Horbury called the Estates General Assembly, which was composed of one third Clergy, one third Aristocracy and one third everyone else. In attempting to cure the Empire's ailments, the Plebeian chamber had become more and more extreme, calling for the massive reduction of powers of the monarchy. When King Horbury attempted to stop them from meeting by closing their chamber, they instead stormed a nearby handball court and wrote a new constitution in which the Kings Power would be reduced to a symbolic position, limited to simply signing legislation passed by the new General Assembly. Although this assembly was not yet legitimate, they began meeting in Veldria in the Somerset Palace. Rising anger and support of this new constitution in the City of Veldria prompted Horbury to order the army to take up positions around Veldria. By September 11th, these positions had been assumed by Royalist forces. However, at the same time a Woman's protest against the rising price of bread began to snowball out of control when word began to spread of the King's preparation's to put down the new movement. The women, armed with whatever they could find, stormed Eaton Palace and demanded the King not only move to Veldria's Somerset Palace, but that he also ratify the constitution created by the National Assembly. In fear for his own life, and that of the continued existence of the Monarchy, he agreed. The new National Assembly storming Eaton Palaces handball court.Temporary CalmFor six months, the National assembly continued passing laws reducing the power of the Monarchy, Aristocracy and Clergy while increasing the power of the people and the assembly. However, in March the King began to write letters to the King of Morley, asking for military assistance in restoring him to power. By April the King of Morley had returned a letter granting him asylum in Morley and promising to help restore him to his throne. On the 14th April 1797 the King set off with his wife and child, heading east towards the Vespyrian mountains and the Pale pass on his way to Morley. However, he had to pass through Fort Angrenost in order to get through the Pale Pass and his disguise failed him. He and his family were carted back to Veldria in disgrace. The royal family's attempt to flee their own nation only further inflamed hatred towards them. ChaosThe Morlay invasion that followed 7 days later on 22nd April pushed public opinion yet further away from the royals, as accusations of Treason began circulating. As Morley began pushing through Serkonos towards the Pale Pass panic gripped the remainder of Veldria. When the Duke in command of the Morley army in Serkonos, the Duke of Brunswick, declared that Veldria city would be destroyed if any harm came to the King or Queen, the fear exploded into anger. Angry mobs stormed the Somerset Palace, murdering anyone who tried to get in their way. The Royal Family fled to the National Assembly chamber, but were ultimately captured and imprisoned in Dunwall Tower. The Kings titles were revoked and the birth of the republic was declared, the First Veldrian Republic. The royal family being captured in the Somerset palaceHundreds of suspected dissidents were rounded up, including a large number of the clergy and aristocrats who did not share the enlightened ideals of the revolution. These prisoners were all kept in Dunwall tower, albeit on less secure lower levels than the king. As the Morlay army continued it's advance, and was on the brink of reaching Fort Angrenost, the 500 year old fort that guarded the Pale Pass. The government began drafting adult men to fight for the country, mobilising citizens guard units and massive amounts of manpower to throw at the approaching enemy. The fears of the people now turned to the hundreds of prisoners in Dunwall prison. It was feared that there were not enough soldiers left in the city to fight off a prison escape and that if Morley reached the city, the combined force of their army and the prisoners would lead to a bloodbath of the people. It was at this point that the government began sending out spies and, under the advisement of the Abbey of Everyman, Overseers. Fear had not just gripped the peasantry, but it had also gripped the government and Scargill. Scargill, once a staunch opponent of capital punishment, now when questioned on his change of mind simply said "Times have changed". Scargill's government declared the nation to be in a state of emergency and he suspended the bill of rights and constitution that he had helped create. His party now lurched to the extreme fringe, authorising massive use of violence to prevent the Republic from returning to the old Kingdom. Grapeshot was used against reactionary revolts in Griscol and Tamarak and large numbers of suspected citizens were hanged for allegedly not showing enough enthusiasm for the Republic. When Fort Angrenost fell on 15th August fear gripped Veldria stronger than ever. Mobs stormed the Prisons, murdering any prisoners they found. Clergy and Aristocrats were killed by the dozen, several were thrown off the top of the tower, others simply hanged from the battlements. The King and his family however, survived the attack as their cell was not breached. It was at this point that Scargill, a man who had once supported Constitutional Monarchy, decided the king had to be executed. On 28th August 1797, King Horbury IX and Queen Victoria I were hanged like common criminals at the national gallows, outside the Somerset Palace. His child was given to peasants to raise. Morlay troops charge the inner keep of Fort Angrenost.Fall of the First RepublicBy September, the military and economic situation began to look brighter. Fort Angrenost had been retaken by the overwhelming numbers of the Citizens guard and the price of grain and bread had fallen. George Danton and his party in the Assembly now began to argue that it was time to end the terror, as it had served it purpose and was no longer needed. When he brought this up in a cabinet meeting, it is reported that Scargill simply called him a traitor and stormed out. Danton was the Minister of War in the Emergency ruling coalition and had vital connections with the military. When Scargill declared the next day that he had a new list of traitors and that they would be read out at the next cabinet meeting, Danton made his move. On the night of 11th November 1797, Citizens Guard units moved into and captured the National Assembly and arrested President Arthur Scargill, High Overseer Thaddeus Campbell and a great deal of Overseers and incriminating documents. Danton and his new government now reinstated the constitution and bill of rights, although not before having Scargill and many other prisoners accused of having bathed in the nations blood hanged. This coup is often called the 2nd Glorious Revolution and was seen to set the new republic back onto the course it was originally intended to be on. The Age of Enlightenment remained undiluted and would carry on into the 19th century. Arthur Scargill on his way to the gallows, along with other perpetrators of 'the Terror'.
(1798 CE-2013 CE) The 2nd Veldrian Republic
Spoiler: click to toggle Era of EnlightenmentThe new republic continued to fight the Moray forces back through Serkonos and by the Fugue Feast Morley had withdrawn from the Republic and a treaty was in the process of being signed. With the Republic now secure, a massive wave of reform swept over the nation. Distances were decimalised, Equal rights were extended to all, including women and slaves. Capital punishment was finally abolished and the Bill of Rights was firmly established and implemented. In 1812 Education was extended to all with a public education system. Arts and Philosophy flourished in this period. Large secular universities were build in all of the major cities at this point Era of IndustrialisationStarting with Veldria's discovery of rail roads in 1836, Industrialisation truly gripped the nation like never before. Factory production increased 10 fold with new techniques and equipment assisting every day. A great Railway was built through the Pale Pass, allowing goods to travel easily through the mountains to Serkonos and the border with Morley. Serkonos was rapidly industrialised, with it's mountains providing plentiful resources and production materials. The towns of Tyvia boomed, with the towns of Yaro and Calton gaining the nicknames of Cottonopolis and Linenopolis respectively. The city of Yaro, otherwise known as "Cottonopolis", at it's height in 1867The occurrence of the Second Upper Hesperian War of 1845-48 with the United Kingdom of Greater Laddneia resulted in defeat for Veldria and the ceding of large tracks of territory to the North, including the capital of Tyvia, Tamarak. ( see map) This humiliating defeat and the formation of the new UHAA to the north led to the October Commune of 1848, in which Veldria City was gripped by an attempted communist takeover, with the peasantry rising up and taking control of the city for 3 months. Although the October Commune was ultimately crushed, this was not the end of attempts at implementing radical forms of socialism. Throughout the 1850's revolutions occurred around the country, however all were put down by the bolstered military (another result of the war). The military revolution of the 1860's saw weapons turn from short range wooden constructs to long range iron killing machines. Peace and progress continued however and by 1880 Veldria city was electrified, with other industrialised cities following suit soon after. A notable feature of Veldria post 1850 was it's level of Imperialist attitude, revanchism and militarism. War of Morley AggressionRelations with the Kingdom of Morley became more frosty as the century turned to the 20th. Morley had also lost territory in the Second Upper Hesperian War and, again like Veldria, had been building up it's military. Claiming it had the right to all land from the Vespyrian Mountains to the River Wrenhaven, the Kingdom of Morley declared war on Veldria in 1901. ( see map) The war was protracted, with both sides employing heavy use of artillery and trenches. Veldria however was able to strike back quickly due to the heavy fortifications placed in the area and the Republics use of Zeppelins to massively bomb hostile positions. A stalemate eventually settled upon the River Wrenhaven, the traditional border of Morley and Veldria. Following the use of Zeppelins to drop troops behind the lines in 1903, Veldria broke through Morley's defences. Use of armoured trains, large scale artillery bombardments and masses of hoarded troops allowed Veldria to continue it's advance, albeit slowly and in 1905, Arran, the capital of Morley, fell to Veldrian forces. Morley surrendered unconditionally and Veldria subsequently annexed the state. The bombing of Arran by Veldrian Zeppelins, 28th August 1904InstabilityThe fall of the King in Morley broke Morlay society. For hundreds of years the people of Morley had been taught to obey their rulers and to accept the social hierarchy, However, the republic opened up new freedoms and many took this as an opportunity to create their version of utopia. Communists rose in various towns and cities throughout Morley in the 1920's, with reactionaries also rising up in an attempt to restore to old power structures. From 1916-1922, there was also instability in the North as the UHAA removed all troops and informally broke up during the Great Hesperian War. Veldria did not take this opportunity to take back it's former territories (and those of Morley) but made it clear that it would if negotiations were not started on the peaceful handover of Northern Tyvia, Morley and Serkonos. A formal handover of territory occurred in 1946, at the end of the Great War. ( see map) Era of PlentyThroughout the next decades, the Republic passed more and more social reforms, such as Universal State Healthcare and Unemployment Subsidies. Cultural unification has been pushed forward by continuous governments since 1934, promoting a national culture that includes all the peoples of Veldria, through education and the media. Inequalities continued to lower throughout the late 20th century as the global economy moved on from manufacturing to services. While manufacturing in Veldria did decline in the 70's, 80's and 90's, it has since levelled off and begun to rise again. Poverty of the kind experienced prior to the 1930's is relatively unheard of, with the government giving monetary assistance to the needy.

Economy
The economy of Veldria is primarily focused upon the Tertiary sector, with Banking and services making up a large part of the nations economy. However, Industry, or the secondary sector, is highly valued in Veldria, as is to a degree the primary sector. A list of the top businesses in Veldria is as follows:
Spoiler: click to toggle Forseti Limited of Veldria, Griscol Automobile manufacturer
Kraimer Motor Works of Kunich, Morley Automobile manufacturer
Aquila Group of Baleton, Griscol Automobile manufacturer
Muspell Industries of Arran, Morley Specialise in the creation and maintenance of Nuclear Reactors and the mining of Nuclear material. Also specialise in Helium Mining.

Cybus Industries of Veldria, Griscol Specialise in the creation and maintenance of renewable energy sources, microchip and computer manufacturing, Railway running and maintenance, creation and maintenance of ICT systems, creation and maintenance of Robotic systems
'Bank of Veldria' of Veldria, Griscol Nationalised bank, competes alongside private banks, offers very low interest loans to secure recipients, allows the people to store their money into a secure bank backed by the the Government
Veldrian Broadcasting Corporation of Veldria, Griscol Specialise in mass media
Members of the Veldrian Arms Partnership Harland and Wolff Corporation of Driscol, Griscol Specialise in ship building

Cromwell plc of Veldria, Griscol Specialise armoured vehicle production
Atlas Systems limited of Veldria, Griscol Specialise in engine and airship construction
Asquith Corporation of Culero, Serkonos Specialise in fixed wing aircraft and armaments manufacturing
The existence of the nationalised Bank of Veldria has resulted in a lack of powerful private banks and contributed to the lower than average services Sector employment numbers. As can easily be seen, the most powerful and wealthy companies in Veldria are those involved in either mining or manufacturing. Old heavy industries have continued to see prosperity beyond the 60's, which is rather unusual for a highly developed nation. However, this has largely been put down to concerted modernisation efforts by both the government and private entities in order to remain competitive. The big 3 industries in Veldria are counted as ICT, Automobile Manufacturing and Arms manufacturing. While Airship construction was one of the top 3 up until 1960, it is no longer a large industry and is primarily maintained by the rich and the powerful purchasing them as symbols of status and culture. For each sector, the big 3 industries are counted as:
Primary 3 Uranium Helium Iron Ore
Secondary 3 Automobile Manufacturing Arms manufacturing Nuclear Reactor construction and maintenance
Tertiary 3 Information and Communication Technologies Mass media Banking
Government economic policy
Flag of the office of the Treasury of Veldria The Veldrian governments economic model is based upon the principle of supply and demand, which largely justifies it's close relationship with protectionist policies, as the cycle of increased wealth leading to increased purchases leading to increased goods leading to increased jobs leading to increased jobs requires Veldrian products to be the items of choice of the general population. The government has largely used trade tariffs to ensure that this preference remains intact, but recent international negotiations have begun breaking down this barrier to select nations.

Culture The culture of the Veldrian Republic is heavily influenced by the events of it's past, primarily by the Glorious Revolutions. The ideological attitudes of the people of the republic is best summed up by the principles in the national motto; "Liberté, Égalité, Unité". Universal liberty and equality are highly valued in particular, with any contradiction of these principals being largely considered as immoral. The third principal, Unity, is one of national unity and has largely helped in maintaining a cohesive Veldria, against forces such as Tyvian communism and Morley nationalism.
The people of Veldria are highly concerned about moral matters and the country is known for it's love of debate. Compulsory critical thinking and philosophy classes proliferate the enlightenment to new generations. As such, the populace is highly informed on cultural, ethical and moral matters and tends to take strong views on most subjects relating to these subjects. Rationalism, science and objectivity are widely celebrated, with events such as the Festival of Reason being highly popular events of the social calendar. The primary broadcaster of Veldria, the Veldrian Broadcasting Corporation or VBC, is restricted by law and supervised by the Office of Communications to only presenting non-biased material and is seen as a national treasure, occasionally given the affectionate title of "the Guardian of unbridled truth".
Religion Religion is a rapidly declining phenomenon in Veldria, down 20% since 2000. While republican Veldria has always had a relatively high number of non religiously affiliated people, in recent years the number has exploded. This has largely been put down to the skeptical nature of the population and the recent spread of the internet as a resource for debate and the sourcing of evidence. Another factor in the declining religiosity of the Veldrian population is the collapse of belief in the Justosian Holy Church, which itself is primarily due to the collapse of Justosian to the plague. Unaffiliated is currently the largest religious group, but it is not a majority. The countries past is largely intertwined with the Cerberus Universal Church, which held a commanding position in the country from 1600 to 1797. As such, many of the churches throughout Veldria are CUC affiliated with Gothic architecture.
Architecture The architecture of Veldria varies from one state to another, although Enlightenment architecture permeates the entire nation for buildings built post 1810. In Griscol Baroque architecture dominates the landscape, in Tyvia Turris architecture is mostly seen, in Serkonos it's Renascentis and in Morley it's Cerberus revival. Veldrian architectural styles heavily involve the use of symmetry and the heavy use of decoration throughout their designs. The government has long held the policy that these architectural styles are integral to Veldrian culture and so have banned all styles that do not conform in a non-residential setting. This has resulted in some odd designs, especially considering Veldria's heavy regulation on skyscrapers.
The Palais Garnier is often held up as the pinnacle of Veldrian architecture
National celebrations The national celebrations of Veldria primarily emerged immediately following the first glorious revolution. Events such as the Fugue Feast and the Festival of Reason were set up by the Abbey of Everyman in their attempt to replace the Cerberus Universal Church in all aspects of life. Although the abbey itself was disposed and outlawed, the celebrations it installed were maintained as symbols of the new beginning. Particularly prominent festivals are as follows:
Festival of Reason
The Festival of Reason is a week of events that occur from the first Monday of August until the first Sunday after that. The festival beings with a state holiday in which massive open air debates occur with titans of ideology and philosophy around the country. Citizens are encouraged to challenege their idea's and to test their ideology's and to simply get into a discussion with a neighbour or friend on a subject that matters to them. What follows is 6 days of science, with scientific discovery and wonder being celebrated. Every night of the week large observation posts are set up to allow citizens to observe the sky, mainly in areas of low light pollution. Parades in the name of science are set up in all major cities. On the final day of the festival, the leaders of the top 5 parties have a televised debate, with experts on the subjects discussed being called upon to ensure that the politicians do not stray into the realm of fiction or spin.
Festival of Liberty
The Festival of Liberty is a celebration of the liberty and representation of the people. Concerts and parades often occur on this day which is a 1 day state holiday. It is encouraged that the people take the freedom of this day to enjoy themselves, to try something new and to explore new frontiers. High Altitude Airship diving is a particular favourite activity during this time. The freedom of equality is also celebrated on this day.
Festival of Unity
The festival of Unity is a celebration of Veldria as a nation. It occurs on August 28th (both the date of the death of the King and the date of the Declaration of the Rights of Man) and begins with a massive march of the Veldrian Military along the Primus, which ends with a fly by conducted by 100 jets of the Veldrian Air Force and all of Veldria's state airships. It concludes at the end of the day with a massive firework display around the Great Tower of Quantitas.
Presidential tour
The presidential tour immediatly follows the Festival of Unity. In the Presidential tour, the president travels to Veldria's state capitals in the massive VAS Majestic. The event usually takes about a week and a half to complete.
[anchor]Dissidents[/anchor]Dissidents
The people of Veldria are highly diverse, and although held together by the unifying freedom and equality the republic presents, there are several anti-Veldrian Republic movements within Veldria. Morley Nationalists - Morley nationalists aim to establish the nation of Morley once again, which became a part of the republic in 1905. Support for an independent Morley stands at about 30%. However, the landlocked nature of Morley and the fact that the old Morley was an autocratic militarist regime has lowered support, down from a high of 46% in 1960 in Post-1946 Veldria. Veldrian Communists - Primarily based in formerly UHAA occupied parts of Tyvia, Morley and Serkonos, Veldrian Communists wish to see the full implementation of Veldria's second principle; Equality. They believe that equality of wealth is the key to a truly equal society and seek to end the oppression of the rich and powerful corporations or "Bourgeois" over the downtrodden "Proletariat" masses. Citing the lower education ratings of poorer Veldrian's, they seek to end privileged upper class lifestyles so that the wealth used in such a lifestyle can be distributed fairly between everyone. Current support the Veldrian Communists stands at 7%. Reactionary's - Reactionaries, or 'whites' as they are popularly known, seek a return to a more church based country, where the Holy Book and the Cerberus Universal Church are the moral guidance of Veldria, not the immoral masses. They seek to set up a theocracy and to give the Pontiff in Lomarre ultimate control over the nations politics, along with a privy council elected by the people but approved by the clergy. Support for this group has been continually dropping for several decades, from 5% in 1960 to 1% in 2013.

Veldrian Party The Veldrian Party is a Fascist, anti democracy party primarily based in Morley. They seek to end the Veldrian Republic and replace it with the Veldrian Third Empire. They call for a more unified people, with true Veldrian's uniting in with pride in their culture, history, language and values. Highly regimented, the Veldrian party was founded in 1922 and is lead by Maxime Vainqueur. Their primary ideals are militarism, eugenics, culture, autocracy and autarky.
Conservateur Party The Conservateur Party is a nationalist, reactionary party, founded in 1799 and lead by Robbe Pierre. The Veldrian Party's main focus is upon reinvigorating the Veldrian military and the centralisation of power in the hands of the cabinet. They believe this will allow for a more efficient and smooth running government. Their core principals are militarism, trickle down economics, reduction in regulations, theocraticism and traditional values. It's members are primarily from aristocratic backgrounds.
