Yes. Where we apparently scared a resident homeless person. Somehow. But I assume this is a shot at DC's self-governance ability.
I don't think that's what expected either, but... To write it would mean it'll be incredibly detailed and disorganized and I don't really have the time or inclination to do it. I don't mind having discourse on it or other systems, but I'd rather field questions than write a dissertation. I already had an hour long discussion with Feni about class struggles against the Clans and why there didn't seem to have been any. |

Same. I'd rather figure out one or two things on the fly than write everything out in detail. |

Slostian Augustus
|
Let's see... Slostia draws from all over the place. The basic governement structure is like that of the US, but there are differences, as well as other influences. Slostia is a somewhat devolved unitary state (although the Government often delegates work to provincial officials, the central government has the ultimate say), and has a Parliament composed of the Diet (Drawn from Parliamentary districts and primarily focused on domestic policy) and a Senate (Elected from the entire country's vote, and primarially focused on foreign policy), an Executive Branch composed of the Prime Minister (elected by popular vote to sign or veto legislation and to suggest it) and his cabinet, and a High Court (appointed by a process that I'm not yet sure about, I'll get back to you on that--to determine the legality of passed laws). Laws passed by these branches of government are enforced by the Bureaucracy (the Ministries), which is influenced by each of the branches. Several parties exist, the largest being the dominant, Social Liberal, Peoples' Democratic Party, and the Slostian Libertarian Union. Businesses are regulated to insure that they do not harm the environment or their customers, thus high quality and environmental standards are in place. The government also can manipulate businesses by using the market, with its government enterprises and by owning stock in large companies. Several industries are totally government-owned, most notably passenger train transport, nuclear energy, and infrastructure construction and upkeep. Passports can be obtained through the Foreign Ministry via post offices, courthouses, DMVs, and other governmental buildings. Slostia maintains a large set of social services, including universal healthcare, quality public education (up to the college/university level), and pensions. However, many of these things can be waived in favor of obtaining them privately (This is especially true for schooling, as many Slostian students attend private schools and/or universities). Forgot about a few things it seems... Schools are public, though local businesses offer their money in return for advertising on sports teams, and cheaper food and drinks for the advertising opportunities. Universities are mainly private, though there's some cities who have their own public ones. There are also many private schools. All private schools use advertisements to keep admission cost low. Social services are low. Pensions are unheard of for non-military retirees. Government health insurance is only there for current government employees, and active or retired military, otherwise it's done by private companies, if people use it at all. Citizens can opt into a social security program, where the more they put into it through the years, the more the payout is once they retire. The government itself is split into 2 main branches, the Alpha Council and the High Court. The Council is made up of 3 Councillors from each state, elected by popular vote, the Grand Marshall of the Marines, the Supreme Admiral of the navy, and then the Alpha Councillor as the leader of the country, who's elected from the general populace by popular vote, and by law can't have been a member of the Alpha Council within the past several years. The High Court is made up of judges put to the post by the Alpha Councillor, and confirmed by majority vote of the other Councillors. Edited by Canusia, Jan 4 2013, 05:26 AM.

Hm, Allemann is a Federal Commonwealth, direct democracy with a Directoroal system (council rule). A bit like Switzerland but not so decentralized as the Swiss are. Head of state is an elected monarch that holds no power other than making reports and statements to the assembly (parliament). A high tax rate which means public education and healthcare, regulations on firearms. People can choose to not have public healthcare and instead pay lower taxes. Universal conscription in the military, though one can choose to do civilian duty instead. |

thank you guys and gals, this is great, look it doesnt have to be very detailed, I will leave that to your factbooks, and Demoness and Xosia I understand that your information might be ridiculously comlicated, however the objective of this is if a new player does decide to join Alterra, and he/she doesnt know what type of government to choose from, then they can look at these posts to give them some ideas... as I am seeing there are a lot of nations on Alterra that have governmental types either slightly or far removed from RL, and I think that is what makes it exciting, so keep on the good work! hopefully within a few months we will have enough information to add to the "nation builder" part of the forums... |

Ruler of The Republic of Vantel
|
If I was to give a general outline, Vantel would basically run like the US, but each State is a lot more powerful in running itself. Basically, the States are subservient to the Federal Government of Vantel in all matters foreign, defensive, and insuring that Human rights are maintained, but otherwise they are fairly independent and may even embargo each other, though the Federal Government usually mediates well before that, and even if they manage to maintain the embargo, other states may act as roundabouts to maintain trade. |

I guess the closest comparison would be with Iran, except replacing religious figures with intellectual elites. |

Okay... I'll attempt a cheat sheet: While Demoness is technically an absolute monarchy, it could also be classified as a theocracy as the Empress is literally a goddess and the Church has a high influence on policies. The Empress is the head of both the government and the Church, but the government (Adon) and Church may oppose her policies; their liaisons respectively are the Lawspeaker (Prime Minister) and High Priest (Empress' consort). All non-elected government positions are at Her Divinity's Pleasure. The Adon (Ministries) are based on meritocracies, but the Adoni (Minister) is an appointed position and while the Empress is free to make her appointments, she can and will be criticized for bad choices. Eda are governors, though they were historically stewards of lands, and are by appointment and/or inheritance. Mari are mayors and are, in effect, the highest elected position with any power; this is head by popular vote. The Senedh was created by Empress Jia Li as an advisory council and while they are elected to their positions by popular vote, they essentially have no real power; the Empress will listen to their concerns and they represent their people, but they have no ability to act. The Council of Twelve runs the Church and is elected from within the body; while the Empress has absolute authority over the Church, she rarely wields it and it's essentially a meritocracy as well. There are political parties within the country, but they are mostly platforms from which to speak rather than actual vehicles of change. Housing is often provided by employers and is part of an employee's pay. Medical benefits are provided by the government at no expense, but you must pass a health examination yearly. Those who smoke must purchase insurance while drinkers have reduced coverage depending on the severity of the addiction; an occasional drink is fine, but dependency is discouraged; other dangerous behavior is analyzed and coverage may be reduced based on those behaviors; supplementary insurance may be purchased. There is also a large invisible power structure within the Clans and Vulareishite. The Clans, unable to war with one another, now instead own large tracts of land and companies. The Empress owns whichever land is not owned privately and has several of her own companies. College education is free, but the education system is different. At thirteen, a student must choose a career path and most of xyr education will focus on that career. Not all careers result in a Bachelors degree and adjustments are made for that. The system has high standards and it's possible to fail from a career path. Demoness is highly environmental, especially in its business practices, and does its best not to harm the environment and instead integrate into nature; this is evident with the way buildings utilize natural power and hydroponics. Capitalism is regulated but encouraged. Punishment for crimes is always harsh and often involves public humiliation. Social services suck. It is expected for families to step in and help rather than the government, but the Church provides charity; the exception is the elderly, who are well-cared for due to the culture's belief in respect. Only those of Demonessian blood may become citizens in accordance with religious beliefs, but non-native Demonessians (i.e. immigrants) may apply for Permanent Residence, which is essentially the same as citizenship in other countries. The infrastructure provides a beautiful public travel system, connecting cities easily and reducing the need for private conveyance. Cities are built on a grid and built upward to utilize the smallest area possible. While the Empress is a pacifist, the Demoness of old was aggressive with its military tactics. It stockpiles nuclear, biological, and chemical weaponry, possibly illegally, and continues to develop them in private while hiding or denying their existence; this is even hidden from Fenwick. While its philosophy reflects MAD, it believes the Goddesses will protect it from the worst damage. Demoness is, and always will be, racist, but it hides it behind a smile and polite words. Those who visit will note there is a strict adherence to social structure and deviation is not tolerated, though most of my characters are exceptions; that's what makes them characters. |
