History of The Chevalier Trading Company Founding and Early Activities The Chevalier Trading Company was founded in 1606, by a minor noble, Auguste Chevalier, who came from just outside Cannes. A year earlier a new king, Jean IV de Joubert, had ascended to the throne and soon developed a thirst for exploration. The Company initially set about gaining transportation contracts with merchant guilds, and using the income to fund exploration ventures. Soon enough, Esprit had established her own colonies and it was the Company that received the contract to supply these new outposts of Esp civilisation. The Company then turned their eyes to the east. Several voyages to Xia and Libera were chartered, and soon enough, the Companies voyages made contact with the native peoples. In western Xia, trade posts were established, especially in the north breaking the Company into the lucrative fur trade. These lucrative deals, combined with the newly discovered trade markets across the seas, made the Chevalier Company one of the wealthiest early corporations. In 1614, Auguste Chevalier founded the Esprit Stock Exchange and issued stock and bonds. This made the Chevalier Trading Company the first joint-stock company, although the Chevalier family did, and always has, retained a rather large majority share. For the next hundred and fifty years, the Company would continue to play it’s role in Esprit’s colonial ventures, helping it to establish its global empire. ![]() The first Chevalier Trading Company bond ever issued, it was given as a gift by the Company to King Jean IV. The Exploration of Libera and the First Colony In 1803 the Chevalier Company was approached by Eustache Faucheux, and asked to back an expedition of discovery into the untouched heart of Libera, where Faucheux believed lay an inland sea surrounded by a rich fertile land, ripe for colonisation. René Chevalier, the then head of the company eagerly agreed to fund the expedition. Faucheux’s First Expedition, as it became known, set off from Port Roux in 1804, travelled up the Manogo River. The expedition returned to Port Roux a year and a half later, half starved and a failure. Instead of an inland sea, they found endless dark jungle. However, Faucheux was adamant that his next proposed location, the Rukwa River, would be the one where he would find his fabled land. Faucheux’s Second Expedition, set off in 1806 with eight months of supplies. However, Faucheux only got as far as highlands just inland from the coast, before he was forced to turn back, however, he did discover one of the largest waterfalls in the world, René Falls. In 1809, after over a year of preparation, Faucheux’s Third Expedition, was launched. This time, they sailed up the Rukwa in special light steamers, designed to be taken apart and dragged overland past waterfalls. However, it turned out that Faucheux had in fact turned off the river on his previous expedition, and the specialised boats never had to be dismantled. Faucheux soon stumbled upon his paradise; a huge freshwater sea, surrounded by miles of savannah and rich in wildlife. René became fascinated with this new land, named Augustia in honour of the company founder, and immediatly began petitioning the crown and all men of wealth to invest in a private colonial venture. While the crown did not contribute any funds, it granted the company a Royal Charter, legally giving the company rights to: trade with Liberan rulers; to form banks; to own, manage and grant or distribute land, and to raise a militia force. In return, the company agreed to develop the territory it controlled, to respect existing Liberan laws, to allow free trade within its territory and to respect all religions. Eventually, René was able to find a group of investors to funded the establishment of a colony on the shores of Lake Faucheux (as the inland sea was named). They called the colony Laucourt, after the village from which the Chevalier family originated, and was founded in 1811. Eustache Faucheux, upon his return to Esprit ![]() Faucheux's river steamer, The Angélique, used to explore up the Rukwa The Beginnings of the Company State Five years after the establishment of Laucourt, the Company arranged a second colonial expedition to Augustia. This new wave of colonists founded Ascálon in 1816. Slowly, people from all over Hesperia began to migrate to the new colony. Land grants were readily handed out for a pittance, and the land was exceptionally well suited to livestock, grains and wines. In time, the colony was deemed large enough to undergo political and legal reformation. The Territory of Augustia, as it was originally named, was formed on 2nd March 1820. The Territory was administered by the Office of Colonial Affairs in Port Roux, and the local Governor, appointed by the Board of Directors. Only months later, the name was officially changed to Chevalieria, as the colonists referred to it. The territory continued to grow and expand for the next twenty years. During this time, the Company came into conflict with the local Xotho peoples. This escalated into open warfare in 1821. The Chevalier Mounted Police Force (Chevalier Monté une Force de Police, CMFP), the militia forces of the colony supported by a regiment of mercenaries hired by the Company led an assault into Xotho lands. The actually conflict was very brief, within a month, the Xotho had surrendered after Captain de Broglie burned their largest town to the ground, and killed their king. After the surrender, the Xotho were annexed into Chevalieria as the Unorganised Territory of Xotholand. ![]() Gaspard Sauveterre, First Governor of Augustia, and Ubuntu, his trusty manservant ![]() Captain Léon de Broglie, first commander of the CMFP A depiction of CMFP officers scouting in Xotholand Further Expansion and the First Kwanegani War Edited by Chevalier Trading Company, Jan 8 2013, 12:09 PM.

Company Rule in Chevalieria Administrative Posts, Politics and Legislatures The head of government in each territory, is a regional administrator appointed by the Office of Colonial Affairs. Mebatete and it’s associated tribes retain their own monarch, currently King Mpande kaCetshwayo, however, the Mebatetean Crown holds little administrative authority. All territories are managed by an administrative council; on which seats the territorial head of government, four other officers appointed by the company, and four members elected by the territory (or, in the case of Mebatete, appointed by the crown). Each councillor is charged with heading a committee, comprised of volunteers citizens, that manages are certain aspect of the territory. There are many active political parties in each Territory, each of various ideological persuasion. However, no political party can be said to "rule" a territory. They may hold all the elected offices, but decision making will always ultimately fall to the Company. The citizens of the Territories enjoy good civil rights, as the company takes the view that "One is largely free to do as they please, so long as they do business with us!"*. This is reflected in the fact, that the CTCo. holds a monopoly on almost every area of commerce in the Territories. The Company Credit is a currency used to pay employees, forcing them to only purchase goods and services from the Company and her Subsidiaries. *This quote is attributed to René Chevalier, who organised the first colonial expedition to Augustia Edited by Chevalier Trading Company, Jan 7 2013, 07:51 AM.

The Armed Forces of The Right Honourable Chevalier Trading Company The Chevalier Trading Company has been employing mercenaries since it first began to receive transportation and trade contracts. These first Company soldiers would simply act as security aboard the trading cogs, defending the cargo from pirates and mutinous crews. When Laucourt was established in 1811, the Company administrators organised a militia comprised of all male colonists (the Chevalier Monté une Force de Police, [CMFP]). As tensions increased with the local Xotho tribes, the Company hired a regiments worth of mercenaries and shipped them off to the colony. The Armed Forces of The Right Honourable Chevalier Trading Company was formed in 1841, unlike the CMFP, it answered to the Company, instead of the territorial authority. Today, the security of the Territories falls to the Company Armed Forces, which is under contract to the territories to provide defence and law enforcement services.
