EDL - NOT IN MY NAME SAYS HERO

The English Defence League say they will parade on behalf of George Cross winner Matt Croucher

'I don’t see any point in dragging me into this' says George Cross winner Matt Croucher

A hero Marine has slammed far- right extremists who claim they will be marching in his name at an anti-Muslim demonstration.

The English Defence League say they will parade on behalf of George Cross winner Matt Croucher in Birmingham next month.

They claim to be outraged after Muslim councillors failed to join in a standing ovation for the Royal Marines Reserve.

Matt was awarded the gong after throwing himself on a grenade to save his pals in Afghanistan.

He said: “They won’t be marching in my name and I won’t be joining them.

“I don’t think anyone joins the forces for political reasons and it wasn’t any different for me.

“Politically, I don’t see any point in dragging me into this.

“I don’t think people have any understanding unless they’ve been to Afghanistan or Iraq and spoken to the people themselves, rather than believing what they read.”

The row began when Respect councillors Salma Yaqoob and Mohammed Ishtiaq refused to stand for the 40 Commando Lance Corporal at a Birmingham city council event. Matt said: “The female councillor was saying it was a protest against the other councillors and the Government – it was a good excuse to protest at an event like that.

“She has been on national radio since as a result and probably got her party quite a lot of interest which is probably what they wanted.”

Far-right EDL leader Stephen Lennon tried to hijack the issue by announcing a March 19 demo on behalf of Matt, 27, who now works in private security protecting footballers and celebrities and also helps the Royal British Legion.

But the former bootneck from Solihull, West Midlands, said: “I don’t support them.”

Meanwhile, under-fire Lennon, 27, told us he is ready to quit his job, bleating about concerns for his safety.

The tanning salon boss, who has a conviction for assault, said: “It’s destroying my family, do you know what I mean?

“My missus is crying. It’s a big stress. I don’t want to be the leader of this organisation but I want something to change.

“Why is my head on the chopping block? All the things I am saying, politicians should have said them years ago.”

Lennon has experience of far-right politics dating back several years.

He joined the British National Party in 2004 and attended at least one BNP meeting in Luton in 2007.

Lennon admits that the group, made up of football hooligans and other hoodlums, has no hope of becoming a political party.

He said: “I am not politically minded. We know our place, we are bottom of the food chain.”

Lennon told us he is now ready to retreat from public view and leave it to the real politicians, although he had one final inflammatory swipe at Islam.

He added: “Let’s see Cameron put his words into action. Cameron said multiculturalism has failed.

“He is wrong. Islam has failed, not multi-culturalism. That is an insult again to all the communities who have integrated perfectly into society and are really doing good for Britain like the Sikhs, the Hindus, the West Indians.

“Cameron needs get more to the point. He needs to come out and say it: Islam is not working in this country – fundamentally.”

Lennon impressed many when he defended his group’s views on BBC’s Newsnight when grilled by veteran newsman Jeremy Paxman.

But this newspaper has already revealed how a prominent EDL member is a convicted people smuggler.

Ex-serviceman Allan Hetherington-Cleverley, 55, spent four years in prison for smuggling Chinese immigrants across the Channel in an inflatable speedboat.
And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
