The Verses of Jihad One often quoted verse used against Muslims is that of Surah 8, ayat 12. The verse reads as: “Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them." Anti-Islamics and hate preachers like to always bring this up and claim that this verse proves that Islam promotes terrorism and that the Quran orders Muslims to be terrorists. Thus labelling Islam as a religion of terror. Furthermore, they allege that chopping people's heads off along with their finger tips is a light matter in Islam. The fact that these hate preachers still living in the Christian medieval dark ages be they from ‘jihad watch’ or other sites which preach Islamic hatred and make such claims shows their lack of knowledge on Islam. If they are sincere (which most of them are not) they should really study Islam with an open heart rather than copy paste from other anti-Islamic sites or read anti-Islamic books and believe everything they see or hear. So to make things easier for everybody, I shall give the explanation of this verse, with the hope you will all use it and spread it to many different sites and non Muslims. To begin, this verse is referring to a SPECIFIC BATTLE, this verse is not meant to be understood in general terms as an order on Muslims wherever they are in any situation or in any battle!.This verse is talking about a specific battle that took place and it is referring to that in its cotext. The battle it is referring to is the battle of Badr. Some background to the reason for its revelation It was revealed in 2 A. H. after the Battle of Badr, the first battle between Muslims and Non Muslim Quraish. As it contains a detailed and comprehensive review of the Battle, it appears that most probably it was revealed at one and the same time. But it is also possible that some of the verses concerning the problems arising as a result of this Battle might have been revealed later and incorporated at the proper places to make it a continuous whole. At any rate, in the whole Surah there is nothing that indicates that it is a collection of a couple of discourses that have been patched up together. The non Muslims had stolen all the wealth and property of the Muslims who had been driven out of Mecca and forced to migrate to Medina. The Musims became aware they were massing their wealth and taking it to Syria to sell in its markets. So rightfully they went out to intercept the caravan of goods to reclaim their possessions. The Quraish got wind of the Muslims advance and sent an army to kill the Muslims. They wanted to kill them in order to wipe out Islam and the Muslims. The Quraish did not send their army to defend the caravan; it was purely to wipe out this religion of Islam. The Quraish did not deny the possessions in the caravan belonged to the Muslims. They knew that very well, but insisted on killing the Muslims to wipe out the religion of Islam and so that their false gods laat, Uzza and Manaat would continue to be worshipped. The explanation of this verse by Ibn Katheer. The verse in discussion - Allah commands the Angels to fight and support the Believers However let us look at the next verse, Allah said: “Remember when your Lord revealed to the angels, "Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed.'' This is a hidden favour that Allah has made known to the believers through these verses that he had sent angels to strengthen them and increase their numbers. He further instructed them (angels) to keep the believers firm. This was so that they (believers) thank Him and are grateful to Him for it. So where Allah's says, “I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved.” It means, `you -- angels -- support the believers, strengthen their (battle) front against their enemies, thus, implementing My command to you. I will cast fear, disgrace and humiliation over those who defied My command and denied My Messenger, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes. So that was a specific instruction to the angels to carry such actions out and not to the Muslim believers. The believers and non believers use to strike heads, necks, toes and hands in normal warfare practice. The terror cast into the hearts of the enemies was done by Allah when the angels would smite them and leave burning marks of fire. In another verse it says: “So, when you meet (in fight Jihad in Allah's cause) those who disbelieve, smite (their) necks till when you have killed and wounded many of them, then bind a bond firmly (on them, take them as captives) [47:4] Ar-Rabi` bin Anas said, "In the aftermath of Badr, the people used to recognize whomever the angels killed from those whom they killed, by the wounds over their necks, fingers and toes, because those parts had a mark as if they were branded by fire.'' So now it becomes clear that the verse was specific to the angels which when they stuck it burned the flesh. Whereas when the Muslims struck there were signs of normal slashing of the flesh. Remember Allah said, “...and smite over all their fingers and toes...” Ibn Jarir commented that this Ayah commands, "O believers! Strike every limb and finger on the hands and feet of your (disbelieving) enemies.'' So as you can see, these events were taking place during a battle. Now of course during a battle in those days you would aim for the neck to get an immediate blow, and of course you would also aim for their fingers, once taking out their fingers the enemy would not be able to carry his sword hence you neutralize the enemy. So there is nothing barbaric or mean about these verses, it is simply referring to a battle, and nothing barbaric was done in the battle. Also, these were how battles were fought back then in those days. What makes this even more clear is that no historian has ever reported a statement from the Quraish who lost this battle, or a quraishite after that battle as saying this type of killing was barbaric! Because it was the accepted norm of warfare at the time. |

Thanks bro James it makes perfect sense and your explanation was easy to follow. “I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved.” was referring to the angels who participated in this battle otherwise it was impossible for the muslims who were a lot less in number to overcome the enemy with out Allah's help. Violence was indeed legislated by Allah during the times of war but the ignoramus anti islamic groups always try to depict that such verses are the norm and applicable at all times even during times of peace. Our religion Islam is so perfect in that there is a logic explanation for every verse or belief that people take out of context. Jzk for your post it has been very beneficial. |
