The English Defence League has sacked the man tasked with organising its first major European demo, after he was jailed for assaulting a bouncer with a large metal torch and a stun gun. The anti-Islamic campaign group confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that it was demoting Kasper Mortensen, spokesman for the Danish Defence League, only weeks before the Danish arm is set to host the European Counter-Jihad meeting in the city of Aarhus. "For someone in a responsible position such as heading up a Defence League to get himself involved in a brawl is not the best thing to have happened," Steve Simmons, who heads the EDL's European expansion, said. "When he comes out, certainly he will no longer be the spokesman for the Danish Defence League." Mortensen, a 23-year-old body builder, was confirmed head of the Danish Defence League by Simmons in January, just weeks before the EDL announced the demo, which the EDL is promoting as the birth of a new European movement. The meeting on March 31 will bring together between 300 and 1000 activists from than six of the EDL's sister organisations, as well as speakers and supporters of Stop Islamisation of Europe, and other anti-Islamic groups. "This the first proper European event," said Stephen Lennon, the former football hooligan who formed the EDL three years ago."We're hoping this will be the launch of a wider European Defence League." Mr Simmons, who handled media for the EDL before launching the European Freedom Initiative in 2010, said he tries to vet those launching and heading sister organisations in other countries. "We check them out as best as we can," he said. "We look around and make sure that they're not linked to any neo-Nazi organisations, and if they're found to have any such links we turn them down." Philip Traulsen, a 34-year-old veteran of Denmark's extreme Right, who is preparing for the demo in Mortensen's absence, said police were keeping him behind bars for as long as possible to disable the movement. "It's a perfectly reasonable strategy," he said. "Cut off the head and hope the organisation crumbles." The Aarhus demo has mobilised militant anti-fascist groups from across Europe . Projekt Antifa, a coalition of anti-fascist groups has booked six buses to take protesters from Copenhagen to Aarhus on 31 March for what it is describing as " the capital's biggest anti-fascist mobilisation for more than ten years."
