A Pimp Named Slickback

Majii entered the classroom side-by-side with Sylvia, giggling uncontrollably. Syl did know how to distract her whenever she had any sort of relationship trouble. Granted, she probably didn't know the true extent of the abuse. Majii had only ever told Syl about a few cruel words, and hid hand-shaped bruises under her volleyball jacket. A few racist jokes later, and they seemed to ache less. "Syl, you're horrible!" Majii exclaimed, hitting Syl lightly with her violin case. The two sat in desks in the very front of Mr. Prestwick's classroom, desks that they weren't technically assigned to. Sylvia always faked a vision problem sot hat she could sit next to Majii. "No, Harrison is." Sylvia said, her tone suddenly turning more serious. "You need to dump him, like, yesterday." Majii bit her lip and stared down at the floor. "I-I can't." she replied. "He's my running mate for prom queen. I'll go down in the polls if we break up." This wasn't the real reason, of course. Majii had no Earthly idea why, but she loved Harrison with all her heart, and, despite the way he treated her, she was sure he felt the same way. "Fuck that!" Syl exclaimed, kicking Majii's desk hard enough to make it shift. "Language, Miss Scotia." Said Mr. Prestwick, entering the classroom just before the bell rang. Sylvia muttered a quick apology and returned to the conversation. Majii continued to ignore her friends warnings, instead adjusting her shorts a bit. That was the downside of being on the volleyball team, everyone was checking her out in those tiny little shorts...perhaps that was part of the reason Harrison was so damn possessive. Suddenly, Nydia Estaria rushed into the room in her cheer uniform, handing a note to Mr. Prestwick and shooting a dirty look to Majii. "How's it going, Jack Sparrow?" Majii muttered, indicating the eye patch Niddy wore since her surgery. For a second, the petite girl looked hurt. "Oh, nothing much, Majii. I'm just late because Cole was helping me to the nurse's office. Y'know, Cole? My boyfriend? Not yours?" Niddy shot with a sarcastic smile. Majii rolled her eyes. So, Niddy was still on about that...ever since middle school, Majii and Niddy had been fighting over Cole Baxter. Majii gave up the fight sophomore year, and started dating Harrison as a junior. Cole was completely disinterested in her, and after a while, the feeling was mutual. Still, Niddy was the type to hold a grudge. "Jeez, are both of you on the rag?" Eady interrupted, drumming on Majii's desk. Majii smiled softly. Eady was the only person in the world who could get away with a comment like that. Niddy scoffed and waltzed over to her own desk in the back of the room. "Alright, delinquents, listen up." coughed Mr. Prestwick, standing up from his desk and hobbling over to the front of the class, cane in hand. "We're gonna be having a student observer in here for the next month or so. He should be here in a few minutes. You should respect him just as much as you respect me; if he says jump, you say how high. Please, don't hurt him." Mr. Prestwick eyed Eady, Sylvia, and Alyce, a the quintessential trio of trouble. Even though Eady was his own son, he was still one of his problem students. Niddy's hand shot up, and Mr. Prestwick nodded in acknowledgement. "I just wanted to remind you guys to vote for my sister for prom queen. Or Alyce. Just not Majii." Niddy smiled, resting her chin on her hand. "Dually noted. Does anybody else have any off topic banterings?" asked Mr. Prestwick rhetorically. Alyce raise her hand hesitantly, and Mr. Prestwick rolled his eyes in reply. "Thanks Niddy, but it's totally cool to vote for Majii, too. I'm voting for Majii." Alyce added, crossing her legs and allowing her pleated cheerleading skirt to reveal a bit more than the dress code allowed. Majii turned around and smirked. There was a bit of a rivalry between her and Alyce, but it was all in good fun. "That means a lot, Alyce. I thought you were gonna be a lamer and vote for yourself." Majii joked. Her vote was on Alyce, too. "Silence, flies. I fail to understand why you children make such a big deal about this...prom nonsense. You spend hundreds of dollars on dresses and tuxes and tickets, all for one night of terrible music, dancing, and spiked punch." Mr. Prestwick ranted. "Now, back on topic..." Sylvia raised her hand as soon as the words escaped Mr. Prestwick's lips. "For the love of all things sacred....what!?" "I would like to denounce all rumors that I'm a lesbian. I'm going to prom with Elliot Fleck. He's dreamy." Sylvia stated matter-of-factly. Mr. Prestwick hobbled over to the white board, slamming his head repeatedly. ((Comet's in this class. He has to be. Comet fiddled nervously with the edge of his notebook, trying not to look awkward in the scenery about him. As usual, he sat next to Niddy, the girl he kinda-sorta-had-a-humongous-crush-on-but-couldn't-tell-her-because-she-already-had-a-boyfriend, but unfortunately for him, his only friend in the class happened to not be there. Again. He was a bit shy about socializing, hence his lack thereof, and was even more shy about being in a class full of people he didn't really know or talk to. Not that they would ever talk to him anyway. The hair covering half of his face and his headband made him look rather odd, but it was better than to let them see the scars that marred his face from the car accident just two years before. He was forever in the debt of the 'old family friend' Rellik who had taken him in after that, only asking in return that Comet helped out occasionally with the apartment so that he could go work out (or flirt with Drazil) between college classes. Speaking of him, where was Drazil? It wasn't like her to play hookie more than once a week. Then the door opened and she walked in, wearing a skirt as short as the dress code allowed and a shirt equally revealing. "Sorry that I'm late," she winked at the teacher, "the principal wanted to measure my skirt to see that it's long enough. Or maybe he just wanted to feel up my legs." She giggled and sashayed to her seat, flipping her long, bleached hair out of her way. Comet sighed. Rellik warned her often about the dangers to her reputation for dressing and acting that way, and how others would look at the two of them held a relationship('they're gonna think I'm a damn pedophile for being with you,' he'd say) and whatever else. But she didn't listen; and Comet supposed that if she wanted to be listed as the school's biggest whore, she was free to take that title. Even if he didn't really like her that way, he could admit that she really was a good-looking and shapely individual. But he preferred Niddy. Not that he'd ever tell her, of course, but the cheerleader did have quite a bit of charm to her. If only that Cole weren't around, he thought with a flicker of jealousy, and he would have made some sort of a move by then. Or not. He was shy after all. He tried to politely keep himself from eavesdropping on the other various conversations in the room as he stared at his notebook, blushing slightly as he realized he couldn't keep Niddy's voice out of his mind. He could let the others blend together, but hers stood out like music against the drone. And of course, Drazil's giggling when she caught on to his obvious discomfort did not make it any better. "You're such a cutie, Comet," she said quietly, trying to keep their conversation underneath the others'. "It's so obvious that you're all flustered today." "I try not to be..." he protested absently. But he knew it wouldn't work. She could read him like a book. --- Raian paced in the hallway for a few minutes, practicing his English pronunciation as he pondered going on in there. He had not expected American schools to look so low-budget. He had only been to the college up until that day and it had taken him by surprise. In Japan, the schools were all very clean. So much for the land of opportunity. He'd figured that if the place was known for booming industry and decent teacher pay then it would be a great place to live and teach. Plus, there was the demand of schools to provide classes in his native language so all he would have to do was get certification to teach that on top of his other studies. But over there, he wouldn't feel so damn short. Of course, he was still smaller than average over there, but Americans grew so big! It had been three years since he moved and he still wasn't used to the change. He went over the English patterns and grammatical structures in his head one more time before he mustered up the courage to face the door. He'd already been warned by other immigrants that American students tended to laugh and poke fun at any mistakes a non-native English speaker would make, and so he strove to have a better English background than most people who had only been speaking the language full-time for three years like him. He was ready for this. He knew he was. After straighening the cuffed sleeves of his shirt, he turned the doorknob and walked inside. "Er..." He bowed to the teacher, then did a smaller bow to the class. "Please to meet you, I am Raian Go. I am your student obse-observer," he stumbled slightly over the word as he attempted to put the right accents on the right vowels. "Er, Please take care to treat me well." ((Go = generic Asian name of the century~ Western Elfin territory was kinda the Applecore version of Asia so I figured I'd move it on over.)) |

Majii bit her tongue to keep from laughing. This one was probably going to the unhappy victim of quite a few schoolgirl crushes (the tiny ones got all the attention). Sylvia quickly scribbled a note and discreetly passed it to Majii. Majii eagerly but quietly opened the note from under her desk. Hot for teacher? Majii couldn't hold back a giggle, and wrote her reply down in sparkly red ink. Maybe. He's short. Majii remembered Harrison and pushed the thought aside. Besides, Raian was...older. For some reason, that bothered her. Sure, maybe it was only two or three years, but dating anyone in college seemed odd to her. She stared down at her speckled gray desk, ashamed of herself for thinking of anyone other than Harrison. If he only knew what she was thinking at that moment...she swallowed hard. "Ladies, do you have something you'd like to share with the class?" Mr. Prestwick asked, slamming a hand down on Sylvia's desk. "I would love to, sir, but I don't think it's sharing time." Syl said sarcastically. Mr. Prestwick gave a short grunt, glancing over to Majii. "Miss Aithera, walk of shame for the gum. That's the third time this week." the teacher sighed. Majii hesitantly got up from her seat, shamefully hanging her head and giggling under her breath as she walked to the trash can to spit out her spearmint. "Shaaame!" Eady, Alyce, and Sylvia jeered as Majii spat out the gum. Majii walked past Raian on the way back to her desk, looking him in the eye for a split second. He had really pretty eyes... .... Niddy glanced over at the green-haired boy next to her, smiling brightly. It was so sweet that Comet had a crush on her, but she wouldn't leave Cole for anything, not after all she'd gone through to finally be his girlfriend. She even bothered to take tumbling so she could land on the cheerleading squad. Being as tiny as she was, she was guaranteed the top of the pyramid, and Cole automatically noticed her. "Hi, Comet!" Niddy greeted with her usual peppy demeanor. For a while, she could tell Comet had feelings for her, and she regretted knowing that he would just have to settle for having her as a friend. He was reasonably handsome, too...but his shyness seemed to get the way of any attempts at friendship. It was a pity, Niddy liked making friends. The only people she genuinely disliked were Majii and her stepfather. |

Raian watched the gum-offender walk back to her seat for a moment, wondering what her name whas. Hm, she was rather beautiful...but that was improper of him. In America, high school was four years long, so even if she was old enough to be a University student where he was from, it wasn't the same over here. It was considered improper to have thoghts about one who was still in high school even if their age differences were not so great. Nervously, he moved to stand at the end of the class, wondering just how hard it would veto become invisible. Or become taller. Even lots of the girls were taller than him. Not a good sign at all. --- Comet jumped slightly when Niddy said his name and looked up, somewhat astonished. He'd assumed she didn't even know who he was... "Er, hello," he said, training his eyes right back onto his notebook after he spoke, feeling noticeably flustered. Drazil giggled at him again and reached out with one of her hands to fix his face back toward Nydia. "Look at someone when you're speaking to them," she teased. He knew she was just trying totorment him; that was how she was, after all. "It's impolite to look away, dear." Comet flushed, smiling sheepishly at Niddy. "Er...it's nice to see you...again." He saw her every day, after all. Not that he really expected her to notice him or anything. |

Majii looked back up at Raian again, smiling to herself. It would be interesting to have him as a student observer...he seemed very self-conscious about his height. "Detention, Majii, today or tomorrow." Mr. Prestwick said, writing a do-now on the board in orange expo. "Yeah..." Majii sighed, completely disinterested. Majii pulled her copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray from her bag, the book everyone in Mr. Prestwick's class was required to read. It was fascinating, to say the least, but she would never admit she liked it out loud. "Oh Raian-sensei..." Sylvia whispered teasingly to Majii. Majii rolled her eyes and giggled. "Domo arigoto, Majii." Eady added, whispering in Majii's ear from the desk behind her. "I have a boyfriend. I don't get schoolgirl crushes..." Majii muttered, flipping through the pages of her book and highlighting key passages. ----- Niddy giggled at Comet's awkwardness. Drazil was technically right, but she didn't think of Comet's actions as rude. In fact, it was absolutely adorable. Every awkward sentence he managed to form was adorable. "Nice to see you, too..." Niddy fiddled with her eyepatch. It was getting extremely uncomfortable...ever since her sister tripped her on the steps, she had terrible vision in her left eye. She finally had it surgically corrected, but that meant wearing an eyepatch up until the week before prom and contact lenses after that. It also meant way cool drugs. "Ugh, these painkillers are tripping me out...I can like...see the air." |

Raian fiddled uncomfortably with the hem of his sleeve, attempting to pay attention to the techniques the students' teacher was implementing. Majii...that name clung to his head. It was the name of the pretty one. Not that it should matter; on an American basis, she was too young for him anyway. And her group wouldn't stop chitchatting. Somewhere in that nonsense, he caught his name... But he politely ignored them. He had a feeling they were bad-talking him; was that a hint of poorly-pronounced Japanese in there? He had a feeling it indeed was. These students were rude and far too talkative, he pointed out to himself. Plus, they were too tall and smelled like cheap perfume. He quietly wandered to their little corner, his eyes narrowed. "In my home country," he informed them in a low voice, trying pointedly not to focus on Majii (he didn't want a pretty face to keep him from scolding the students properly and as he was trained to do), "idle chatter rewards harsh punishment. I suggest you listen to your teacher." --- Comet opened his mouth to say something more to Niddy, but before he could he felt Drazil's brightly-painted fingernails prod him in the arm. "Hush, darling. I think we're making the observer angry, no? Or maybe he just doesn't like those four...after all, I am sure they were mocking him. It is what they do." Comet nodded, casting an apologetic look at Niddy. He didn't know Majii, Eady, Sylvia, and Alice very well, but they all four seemed like the type to avoid. He didn't want any trouble, and they appeared made of it; furthermore, if there was trouble then Drazil would get involved and she couldn't afford to get any more suspensions to her name just as much as he couldn't handle the brash types. At least he'd never heard them mention his name or hers, as his only friend, during the time he'd spent in the class; but he heard Niddy and Majii argue more than enough times. Since he'd taken such a liking to Niddy, he didn't like hearing people insult her while knowing he didn't have the guts to say anything about it. "I hope you feel better soon," he whispered over to her with a smile just once more before trying to put his focus on the lesson. Of course, he wouldn't be able to focus today--Niddy actually TALKED to him--but he could make an effort to pass, no? He wondered quietly how she felt, with that eyepatch on her face. At least hers wasn't permanent, he figured. He did kind of miss seeing both her eyes though. She had such pretty eyes. And he didn't like hearing people poke fun at her about it. He'd had one eye for years now and no one said anything...but maybe people like Majii provoked Niddy with it specifically because it was a new thing that would come to pass soon. They just needed some sort of flaw to point out at her. |

Majii blushed furiously and sank into her chair, almost ashamed to call the trio her friends. Alyce made a point of flicking Eady in the head. After all, she wasn't the one participating in his teasing, but she seemed to always get blamed because she was his girlfriend. "Eady and Sylvia..." Majii began, staring down at the floor. Mr. Prestwick walked back over to their little square again, this time rapping on his son's desk. "Eady and Sylvia are my problem students, and undoubtedly two of my brightest." the teacher interrupted. "If Sylvia would actually apply herself I could see her doing very well in this class....as for young Mr. Prestwick..." Eady rolled his eyes, always trying to escape judgment for being the teacher's kid "Well that all starts at home now doesn't it? Detention, Miss Scotia. As for you, Eady, you're grounded." Mr. Prestwick was failing to hide a smile at the public humiliation of his only son. Klaus and Eady had a very strained relationship, but they both took pleasure at getting the others goat. Eady slammed his head down in frustration as Alyce laughed, offering the teacher a hi-five. Mr. Prestwick chuckled and shook his head, returning to what he was writing on the board. "I think you should take away his allowance." Alyce remarked, copying what was written on the board in her binder. Majii couldn't help but smile, too, but remained perpetually mortified under Raian's gaze of her clique. "Class, if you are unable to read...which may actually be the case with a few of you...." Mr. Prestwick began, staring down a few students, "I would like you to find one allusion in Dorian Gray." Most of the students set to work, remembering a few passages from Sparknotes they'd read the night before. Majii flipped to Chapter 11, copying down a reference to the Divine Comedy and raising her hand. Mr. Prestwick gave a short nod. "He seemed to be of the company of those whom Dante describes as having sought to 'make themselves perfect by the worship of beauty.' One thirty-two." Majii recited. .... Niddy muttered a quick thanks to Comet, starting to feel her one open eyelid get heavy. The English teacher seemed to be focused on Majii, Eady, and Syl, so she wondered if she may be able to get away with falling asleep. There was quite a bit of codeine in her drugs after all. "Comet...wake me up if something important happens..." Niddy whispered, resting her head on her desk. Maybe if she was caught, Mr. Prestwick would be forgiving on account of her surgery. |
