Raian glowered at the group for a moment, marveling at how they still had the audacity to speak, before moving back to his familiar spot. Quietly, he scanned the rest of the class--no one stood out particularly, except for another three another three who appeared quieter (thankfully) than the others he had been familiarized with. One girl looked smaller and softer, sporting an eyepatch that signified eye surgery, a boy who appeared to have a liking for emo hairdos, and a girl who looked a little too dolled up for her age. He recognized the girl after a minute; he knew he'd seen her with one of the senior university students between classes many a few times. His eye twitched; wasn't she a little young to be with that guy? He did not know Rellik Ach'tsun personally, but he did know enough stories about him, and apparently he was at least a year or two older than Raian.

Maybe the blonde had gotten held back or something...he left it at that. Hopefully Ach'tsun would have had the decency to wait until she was at least a legal adult before he'd started dragging her around campus.

Speaking of her, she spoke up then, her voice tinted with a sickeningly girlish hue. "Mister Prestwick," she chimed in, "I believe the principal mentioned that all classes are to do the prom queen vote at the beginning of the class period while I was in his office. Am I not wrong?" Now that she mentioned it, he did see the stack of ballots on the teacher's desk. Noting it, he scribbled onto his clipboard, 'when teaching, do not forget to implement school-wide votes before the beginning of class.' He figured that such situations would prove a distraction if forgotten. Then the whole class period would be off-focus. He'd never participated in such votes in Japan, but he'd seen enough American movies to know what it was about and know that prom was very important to many of the girls.

---

Comet tried to be attentive, but found it increasingly hard with Niddy's cute little sleepy face next to him. He nodded at her to signify that he would wake her if necessary, but he didn't know if he'd have the heart to do so. And how would he? He hadn't laid a hand on her in his entire life, so if simply speaking to her didn't help, then it would only add to how flustered he'd gotten through the little bit of time since class had started. To speak to Nydia was hard enough; to touch her? He flushed slightly.

Majii suddenly remembered the vote. So that's why the little blond brat was rambling...Majii wasn't sure if she actually cared about being the prom queen or if she was just running because it was the socially acceptable thing to do. After all, she was dating the captain of the football team. After some badgering from Sylvia, she decided to go ahead and run. Majii was an overachiever, being in all sorts of various student activities, orchestra and volleyball being the most important. Perhaps all the people she was connected to through clubs and societies would vote for her and she would have a shot. Alyce was much prettier than she was, though...
Niddy suddenly shot back up again at the mention of prom, focusing less on her drowsiness and more on how late her prom dress was being shipped. It was so pretty, too...it would be a shame to have to borrow something should it not arrive.
"Right...that thing..." Mr. Prestwick said, rushing over to his laptop and pulling up an e-mail with the list of candidates. He peered over his shoulder at the list as he scribbled names on the board and their coinciding letters. "I still fail to see why you children...whatever. Candidates for prom queen...Majii Aithera, Chanti Estaria, Charice Dewberry, Alyce Sirene, and Drazil...however you pronounce that." Mr. Prestwick moved over to another column. "For prom king...That Harrison Gray brat, Zachery Smith, Thor Baxter, my favorite son..." Mr. Prestwick added a touch of sarcasm to the mention of Eady, "and Ulrich Aithera. How are you two related?" Mr. Prestwick turned to Majii, a look of sheer confusion on his face. Majii smiled and shrugged. The fact that Ulrich made it on the ballot was a mystery, or that any juniors whatsoever made it on the ballot. "Right then. Just...write down your votes for prom king and queen and pass them to the front. Self explanatory enough...and no chatting, as soon as you're done, get on with Dorian Gray."

Drazil smiled sweetly at the teacher, but personally, it made Raian want to cringe. "It is Tae-Yan, Mister Prestwick." She then added under her breath, "How sweet... Someone nominated me again this year." Raian was starting to get disturbed by the falseness in her voice and so he decided to tune it out. Tae-Yan...what was that anyway? Chinese? Or maybe she was from whatever place Ach'Tsun came from. His mind supplemented for him that maybe she came from the moon. But that was just too preposterous. ((Lol.))

He wondered quietly if Majii would be chosen, having been as prety as he thought she was. Or maybe the tastes among students were different from his. It was, as he had also learned, a popularity contest as well, and so he supposed whoever of them had the most friends around the school would be chosen.

---

Comet laughed lightly at Drazil's confusion. He knew she had a few admirers around the school, as would any girl with her appearance; and they nominated her for everything. That is, if they could spell her name. He never did get to ask the origin of it, but after being scolded enough he did know how to properly spell and pronounce it.

Quietly, he scribbled Niddy's name onto his paper as homecoming queen, leaving the 'king' blank as he did not know any of the people on the list personally. He folded it once--he would be embarrassed if he let Niddy see that he was rooting for her--and waited silently to pass it up, wondering idly who would get the vote. He hoped it would be Nydia, as he would love to see her delighted face should she be chosen for prom queen. He couldn't help but be jealous of whoever would be the king, though, to get to stand next to her...once, before the accident, he'd had a nice enough face to be ableto be that guy, and he was a tad more charismatic...but somehow, the scars in his appearance had done something to him to make him less outgoing and more shy and reserved. Perhaps he was afraid of the mortified glances of those who did once get a change to see his warped half of his face, and the sightless eye socket underneath the eyelid that he would never be able to open again. He was thankful at least for his long hair and headband, that hid away the most of the damage; and for Rellik, who despite his rude attitude made one hell of a master nurse. With his work, maybe in a few more years the scars would have faded to something where he didn't have to hide them behind a mask of hair.
((edit; ohwait, I thought Niddy was goingto be on the homecoming list when I wrote this. Olololol comet votes for her anyway.))

Majii quickly scribbled down Alyce's name for queen and Harrison's for king. She smiled to herself, thinking how awkward it would be if Harrison won and she didn't, or vice-versa. Of course, that wouldn't actually be all that funny if somebody else got to dance with her and Harrison beat the living daylights out of both her and the poor king. Majii swallowed hard, folding her vote in half and taking everyone else's from the row behind her. Looking around to make sure nobody saw, she quietly flipped open votes to see how many she managed. To her surprise, Eady voted for her (and himself) instead of Alyce, but considering Alyce had two more votes in the stack, that wasn't a problem. Then there was one vote for Drazil and another for Charice. Majii didn't really know either of those girls, just that one was in show choir with Eady and the other was considered the school slut.

----

Niddy wrote down a vote for her sister and peeked over at Comet's vote with her one good eye. She blushed lightly, but said nothing. Well, that was absolutely precious...Maybe Comet misread the board or just saw her surname and immediately wanted to write her down. It would probably be the only vote like that, though. Despite being a cheerleader, Niddy wasn't very popular outside her squad. Everyone had made fun of her since middle school, and a cheerleading uniform wasn't going to change that fact that she wasn't quite pretty. Cute, maybe, but not nearly as beautiful as her sister. She wondered if Comet had ever met Chanti before. Probably not; if he had, then he would definitely not have feelings for her.
Niddy wanted to write down Cole's name for king, but decided against it. Cole probably wouldn't win anyway; Niddy wasn't nominated so he decided to pick Charice as his running mate. Charice was popular, but not nearly as popular as Alyce or Chanti. Niddy scribbled down Comet's name and passed up the slip of paper, going back to sleep.
"And where were we? Right, allusion, Dorian Gray." Mister Prestwick said, collecting the slips of paper and placing them in a yellow envelope. "Would somebody like to analyze Majii's quote?"

There was a notable silence from Comet's little nook in the classroom. How could he make it look like he read--no, that he even bought that book? He didn't have an ounce of money to his name, and so he never purchased books for classes; usually, Rellik would fill him in on all he needed to make it look like he'd read it. Rellik was, after all, a big fan of the classics (and his roommate to boot) so he usually knew what Comet was talking about. But this time, when he'd asked about it, he'd been offered a blunt "What the hell is that? Looks like you're going to have to quit slacking off and read this one, kid."

So he sat there, feeling a bit odd. A glance to both sides showed him that Niddy and Drazil both had a copy (he had a feeling Drazil didn't read it either though) and subconsciously fiddled with the end of one of the gloves that kept the scars on his hands covered up. He wasn't sure he'd ever even found an allusion in a book--at least, not after the accident and therefore not in times enough to make it notable. He doubted he would even make a decent grade in this class with his kind of exclusion of his workload in his daily affairs. But he didn't have time to read a stupid book when he already worked until two in the morning on a good day to help pay off the huge sum of debt that came upon his shoulders when his parents died and still he didn't make enough to cover the monthly installments without Rellik helping out. He already got into trouble for working on homework when nobody was looking.

He already had enough English credits to graduate, though. If he failed this class, it didn't really make a difference, did it?

---

Raian sighed and kept scribbling in his little notebook as he looked about the class. He wasn't sure about this teacher's capability. He either did not discipline, or Americans made terrible students.

He idly started doodling amidst his thoroughly pessimistic notes in his notebook, brushing his hair out of his face with his index finger--which didn't work, as usual. Ever since he cut it to his chin, it never seemed to cooperate anymore. Though his longer hairstyle was considered sloppy by any culture, he'd much preferred it to a nightmare in his eyes.

Said eyes widened, however, as he was broken from his idle hair related thoughts to find that he had drawn that Majii girl onto his page. Squinting, he scratched it out and started again on something else. She had a pretty face, but he would not draw a picture of some girl he'd just seen in a classroom. It was dishonorable of him. There were many other girls with pretty faces out there and therefore there was no sense in drawing that one, a student by anyone's standards. Biting back his frustration with himself, he instead doodled a sandwich; totally innocent. It reminded him that he was hungry and needed lunch, of course, but it was something that he wouldn't mind looking back on when it came to these notes in the future. Better than going on about whatever flimflam teaching methods this Mr. Prestwick implemented.

Mr. Prestwick sighed, staring out at his sorry students. He could tell that his student observer was thoroughly unimpressed with the class, and he regretted even having an observer in the first place. If only he could get Raian to see his AP English class...then maybe the kid would learn something. Most of the teenagers in his third block were taking English as a remedial course, the only exceptions being Majii, Eady, Comet, and Niddy. Even then, Majii and Niddy were the only dedicated students in the room, and they were constantly at each others throats. All in all, it was the worst class he'd ever had.
"None of you are even listening..." Mr. Prestwick sighed, massaging his temple. "I have no trouble saying that this is my worst class, and there's no reason for that. Most of you need to learn to apply yourselves more...My AP class would be shocked at some of the scores you get away with."
Eady stared down at his desk, knowing he would probably get a lecture later on for not setting a good example for the rest of the class. After all, he was the teacher's son, and if he was the class clown, why should anyone else listen to his father?
Majii glanced over at Raian, suddenly annoyed at the hair in his face. She had gotten so used to being like her mother when taking care of Nor, minor things like that annoyed her to no end. It was what made her more mature than her other classmates; the motherly tendencies she picked up weren't typical for the average teenager. If Raian was Nor, she would walk right over and brush that stray piece right out of his face. It was beginning to drive her crazy.
Majii suddenly realized Mr. Prestwick was talking and blushed furiously. She always listened to her teachers and nothing ever caught her off guard. She needed to stop her near-ogling of Raian and pay attention.
"I want to know..." Mr. Prestwick continued, "How many of you actually read The Picture of Dorian Gray?" Majii, Niddy, Eady, and three other students raised their hands. Klaus would have marveled at the sight that twenty other students didn't even bother with it, but it wasn't too much of a shock. "Right then...I'll tell you what, I'll give you all one week to finish the novel. Read the Sparknotes at least, for crying out loud...I was going to give you an easy little project, but no. You'll all have a test next Thursday over the entire novel. It's about time I enforced my syllabus..." Mr. Prestwick eyed sleeping Nydia and grabbed a bottle of water from his desk, making his way to the back of the room. "...which includes no sleeping." The teacher unscrewed the cap and poured a small amount of water onto Niddy's head, causing her to shoot up and frantically shake out her hair. Normally, this would have been cause for the entire class to laugh, but with the mood that their English teacher was in, silence was a much wiser choice.
Mr. Prestwick made his way back to his desk, putting on a pair of reading glasses and opening up his own book, the latest of Dan Simmons' works. "Silence for the rest of the class. Read."
Niddy finished patting her hair, and glanced over to Comet's desk, seeing that he didn't have his own copy of Dorian Gray. She'd already read the book, and she still had her Spanish homework to do...she pulled her purple binder from under her desk and discretely passed the book to Comet with a smile.

Astonished, Comet gazed at the book in his hand, and then back to his secret little crush, who smiled that sweet smile at him that made him turn pink. He smiled back at her, mouthing a small 'thank you' and placing the book discreetly on his desk.

Looks like he didn't have to worry about failing the class after all. And maybe he would read this one. After all, it was Niddy's book. The Niddy's book. As in girl-he-unrequitedly-worshipped Niddy's book. He felt afraid to touch it, like it would shudder and wither away into dust from his rough hands.

She was just too kind. Too amazing. Perfect, he figured. Generous, sweet-natured, a star pupil, beautiful, and a member of the cheerleading squad to boot.

And she had a boyfriend. Why did life torment him so? He'd been through a few girls before he met her, sure, but none of them lasted in the end and he'd never seen so many great qualities in them as he ever had in her. She was truly his dream girl...and she was already taken.

---

Raian quirked an eyebrow at the teacher. Worst class...? Was that really his luck, to be stuck dealing with the remedial class? Where only a few students were even good students? Once again, he scribbled "discipline is key" on his sheet, since it seemed that was what those students needed. He would have to become a mean teacher...but for a good cause. The cause being for there to be no need for remedial English for some of the lazy children in there who didn't seem to be even trying in the class. He would have to make it Hell on Earth for students who did not do what they were supposed to do so he wouldn't have such a delinquentile situation.

He suddenly felt like this might actually be a good class to observe. By finding all of the ways they create a nightmare classroom, he would learn to combat it and become a nightmare teacher. At least, that was what he figured...

((Lol Drazil is such a terrible student that she's in remedial class. XD ))

The rest of the class was rather dull. There wasn't much for Majii to do other than pass notes with Sylvia and Alyce since she already read the book. She could tell Syl and Aly were trying their hardest to focus, (both of them were failing), but they'd never been star students before. Finish a book a week? Majii doubted they'd ever read the back of a shampoo bottle.
Or perhaps English just wasn't their strong subject. Majii was sorry in math and science, but Sylvia was the top of those classes. As for Alyce...being the head cheerleader had its perks. She would get by by cheating off of all the nerds that had a crush on her.
The bell rang, signaling the end of third block and every student that had been tallying minutes packed their things up in relief. Niddy made her way over to Comet's desk, smiling shyly. It wasn't every day she got to make a friend, and the only people she could ever be nice to were the few that were nice to her. Everyone else could see behind the uniform and knew she was just the loser they knew freshman year, and being on the squad didn't make her popular like the girls in all the cheerleading movies. It was a good day for her, so she decided to go ahead and speak to Comet for the first time instead of fearing what he might think of her if he knew her any better.
"Comet..." Niddy sighed with a smile, "Do you need help, like, tutoring or something?" Knowing Mr. Prestwick, he was going to make this test count a good portion of their grade. If Comet failed the test, he'd probably fail the class. She didn't want that to happen to the poor boy.
"Hey there, little thang..." Eady greeted, sliding in between Comet and Niddy and returning Niddy's flash drive. Eady always pretended to borrow hers so he could save an essay or something, but Niddy knew he was just copying her answers. Niddy lightly pushed Eady out of the way so she could talk to Comet.
"Hey, I'll talk to you at lunch or whatever, but I'm busy." Niddy said. Eady eyed Comet and then glanced back at Niddy, giving a short wolf whistle. Niddy blushed and stared down at the floor. "Tell Majii to back off, OK?"
"She hates you with the burning passion of a thousand fiery suns." Eady shrugged. "And I've told her before. But I'm such a nice guy, Niddy, my charm only goes so far." Niddy smiled. Eady was one of those few people that was just kind to everyone, even if he teased them a bit. "I'll leave you two lovebirds alone...should I tell Cole about this?" Eady winked and walked off. Niddy rolled her eyes, trying to turn her attention back to Comet.

((I kinda want Comet to like Eady. XD Also, Mr. Prestwick is modeled after my sixth grade English teacher, Mr. Hill, who once threw a desk through a window. He was a tyrant, but nobody listened to him.))

Comet blushed and gazed shyly at the ground, gathering his things and moving to stand. Drazil lingered in wait for him from her spot; since she was his only friend at the school, they usually waited around in the school's courtyard during lunch together (unless she was skipping again, that is).

Lovebirds? Why would Niddy's friend call them that? Niddy already had a boyfriend, and there's no way she would ever be interested in a shy little boy with half a face and no personality like him. She had no reason to be when there were plenty of other guys in the school that she could be with.

Then he remembered that she had asked him something. His thoughts shot back at the present and he blinked in surprise. Tutoring...he wished he could. But he didn't have time; nor would he have the heart to take up her time like that, either. "Er, I..." He wanted to. "I don't really have time for tutoring right now...I have a very demanding job, you see..."

"Comet," Drazil reminded gently from behind him. "We can't wait around here all day, darling." She looped an arm in one of his and guided him forth. He waved shyly at Nydia with a meek smile and a "See you around," but Drazil halted for a moment with what appeared to be more to say.

"It was nice meeting you," she told Niddy formally. "It's good to know that little Comet here is making some friends." She narrowed her eyes then, but still held onto that feminine smile of hers. "I suggest you keep his name far away from your friend circle, though. We do not want any trouble if your Cole doesn't like hearing about you talking to other guys while he's not there." That bright air returned around her then, and she giggled. "You seem like a nice enough girl though. Just keep that up and no one's feelings will get hurt, honey."

"Drazil..." Comet warned. The older girl always seemed so obliged to protect him; but surely Niddy didn't plan on spreading tales about him or anything! She was just trying to help though, he reminded himself...even if she had an odd way of expressing it.

Niddy gave a sad little pout at Comet's response. She really did want to get to know him. It was too bad that he had a job, though...she supposed she wouldn't know what that was like; her parents were wealthy and she was spoiled. But there had to be a way for them to spend time together...
Until Drazil gave her her warning. Niddy was suddenly completely shaken up about even approaching Comet. She was right, Cole was the jealous type...she remembered Cole threatening Eady's life for "having the audacity" to hug her goodbye one day. Comet's crush on her was rather obvious, and if Cole ever saw them together...that would be disastrous.
She then gave a sad glance at Drazil's other warning, not to mention Comet's name among her friends. What friends? The only friends she had were the girls on her squad, her sister, and Eady. She wouldn't dare tell the gossipy cheerleaders anything, her sister would never tell anyone her secrets anyway, and she wasn't extremely close to Eady. It was sad that the girl on the top of the pyramid was so friendless...
"Well...you can...facebook me if you find the time, I guess..." Niddy swallowed hard. She didn't even know Drazil, but she supposed that was her life: even the people that didn't know her made her feel bad about herself. Niddy rushed off to her next class, hoping no one could see the tears forming in her eyes.

........

Majii regretfully caught herself eavesdropping on Niddy's conversation. The pipsqueak wasn't even worth her hatred, but old feelings did die hard. She could tell Niddy was visibly upset when she left the room, and couldn't help but be slightly satisfied. The girl really did need to change how she approached high school if she ever wanted to be well-liked. It was pathetic, she tried too hard to get people to like her, so everyone thought she was shallow. (And rightfully so)
When people saw how horrible she was at handling light teasing or bullying, she isolated herself even further. But even though the old fight for Cole was over, and Niddy had won, Majii couldn't help but keep on hating her for being so mean to her for so long. It was obvious she was trying to be nicer, but she was failing.
Majii was suddenly interrupted in her train of thought but a firm, painful grip on her forearm.
"Do you plan on coming to lunch or not?" she heard Harrison ask. She jumped a bit, dropping her books. "Klutz..." the quarterback leaned over and got Majii's books for her, practically shoving them into her arms.
"Sorry, I was thinking and I kinda forgot class was over..." Majii laughed weakly, trying her best not to sound scared. "You came to get me..."
"So get got." Harrison replied dryly. Majii put her books her her tote bag, wrapping it around her shoulder and picking up her violin in the same hand. Harrison immediately grabbed her free arm and escorted her to lunch.
