Way better than you.
Comet held a comforting smile on his face, masking the shock that he felt inwardly. Here he was, hugging Niydia Estaria. Nydia Estaria. Just two days ago, he'd never uttered a complete sentence to her.

But, he considered, it wasn't anything special. She just needed a shoulder to lean on in a hard time, and he just so happened to be there. If her friends were around, it would be different.

Letting those thoughts quell his inward astonishment, he brought his arms around her soothingly. Not to mention that he managed to glare rather darkly--or as darkly as one eye could manage--at the girl that teased Niddy for her situation. He didn't know her, but those words copied her face down into his head as one of the people he didn't like.

Of course, that moment with Niddy was gone just as soon as it'd started. He truly hoped his support would make a difference for her; should it not...he would defintely feel guilty for taking up her time and possibly even changing her reputation.

As they parted, he replied to her, "If it makes any difference...I don't hate you, and I'm sure there are plenty of other people who would love to get to know you too..." He smiled. "You're definitely more..." he struggled to choose his words. Beautiful? Kind? Interesting? "...much more amazing than you cut yourself out to be." And with that, he left, turning to go the other way if not just to hide the blush spreading rapidly over hisface.

.........blaaaah time skip~~~

"Ah-choo!"

Comet blinked and rubbed his nose, looking up and down the hallway for Drazil. Maybe she was skipping again. But he knew Rellik had classes in the afternoon that day... After all, he'd heard him griping about them more than enough times. Speaking of him, he hadn't seen Rellik in the morning either...

Maybe they were both skipping out on their duties to spend a day together. It wouldn't be the first time the two of them did so. Sighing, Comet walked into the classroom. He always felt a bit self-conscious without his friend there to divert all the attention from him.

----

Raian politely ignored the class as they entered, pretending to be reading or whatnot with his phone. But he couldn't help but listen in on things regarding Majii. She'd been plaguing his thoughts all day, making him worry. And now these rumors...pregnancy rumors? Did this have anything to do with her bruises?

By chance then was she possibly... raped...by that boy he saw her with? A twinge of fear struck at his heart. That would be terrible. He prayed that was not the case.

Surely they were separate things. Rumors happened all the time, after all. Silly rumors, that totally had nothing to do with anything that really happened...like, saying she was going to dye her hair green, or had a foot fetish?

But that didn't calm his nerves.

Mr. Prestwick pulled out his own annotated copy of Dorian Gray and put on a pair of reading glasses. He himself had been through the text countless times, but his students, even the less than bright ones, always found things in the book he'd never seen before.
"Alright, class...now, I'm assuming that most of you have been desperately trying to get through the book to prepare for your test...or at least I hope you are....but I don't want any of you skimming or surface reading." the teacher said. Majii reached into her purse and got out her copy, actually paying attention to the teacher as a distraction. "If any of you are confused about the book or historical context, I want you to go ahead and ask questions now."
Immediately, Niddy's hand shot up, and the teacher nodded at her in acknowledgment.
"Well...I know that Sybil's fight with Dorian was...upsetting..." Niddy began, flipping to a passage in a copy of the book she'd borrowed from her sister. "But I don't understand why she had to kill herself. It just seems like a plot device used to make Dorian feel guilty." Majii sighed, and raised her hand.
"Do you have something add, Miss Aithera?" Mr. Prestwick asked.
"Well, it's obvious that Niddy, "Majii hissed out, "Doesn't get this historical context. The fight wasn't just a fight, Dorian left Sybil with the impression that he wasn't going to marry her. Sybil was already poor, and the possibility of marrying a rich man, especially one she actually loved was all she could ever hope for. So she made a bad decision..." Majii swallowed hard. "She let Dorian use her. She gave herself to him, and sex out of wedlock was not at all socially acceptable at the time. She ended up pregnant, and if Dorian left her, he was basically taking all hope of happiness away from her, and pushing her farther down than she was when she met him. Sybil felt used, and knew that if she had a child out of wedlock, she was doomed to an existence in London's underworld, and she couldn't take it...." Majii sighed, wondering if she would do the same if she was in fact pregnant. She knew Harrison wouldn't stick around for long if she was, and she could hardly raise Nor on her own, let alone a baby...but there didn't need to be a pregnancy involved to make her feel just as used and worthless as Sybil. "So Sybil Vanne killed herself. It was better than living in some fresh hell..." Majii closed her eyes and let her gathering tears dry before they could fall. The only thing that kept her alive anymore was her brother...if she didn't have to bring him up she would have ended her life as soon as she got home the day before.
"...Wonderful." Mr. Prestwick said flatly, "I want you all to be able to offer that kind of insight by the time your test comes around...in fact, your grade depends on it." The teacher smirked a bit. "Your test will actually be a project on Dorian Gray. You'll be presenting in next Friday, and you will all be assigned a certain area of the novel to summarize to the class. That's not to say you won't also have an actual test, but that will be postponed for now...I won't give you a rubric, just a few chapters of the book. You'll have five minutes to explain the importance of the text...of course, there's not enough sections for all of you, so you will be presenting with a partner. Can I trust you to choose a partner and not destroy my classroom?" Immediately, everyone was switching seats and rushing to claim their partner before they were already taken. Eady and Alyce immediately paired together, as did Sylvia and Majii. Mr Prestwick cringed at the sound of desks being pushed together and shoes scuffing up the new tile floors. Niddy didn't even bother leaving her seat, and simply scooted closer to Comet. She supposed that normally he would have chosen Drazil, but she wasn't there, so it wasn't a crime to claim him for herself.
"Are you quite done?" The teacher asked, and the class slowly hushed. "Good. Here I have your chapter assignments...you start immediately. Don't ask me anything, just think for yourselves..." Mr. Prestwick made his way around the room, handing half-sheets of paper to the students, ending with Comet and Niddy.

((Hurrr lame excuse to get Comet and Niddy to spend time togetherrr))

Comet looked up and couldn't help but smile as he realized that Niddy had chosen to work with him. That had to be some sort of a blessing...

"I-I guess we're partners..." he said shyly, pulling out the copy of the book that she had given him. He wondered if it was a good thing or a bad thing; in group situations of the past, he would always work with Drazil because she knew abou his situation and would really do all the work since he was working all night long. Plus, he wasn't so good about presentations so she would do all the talking while he hung behind...

But maybe, just maybe, he'd find the opportunity to actually do this project. After all, the bar owner wasn't opening the place back up for a while since he was in surgery so Comet had some time off work (though Rellik would be helping even more with the debt payoff this month).

Plus, the thought of spending so much time with Niddy Estaria was exciting to him. He could really get to know her...not that he didn't hear a lot about her already, but he got to talk to he even more. Maybe theycould even be friends... That was really something he couldn't even imagine just a few days ago. He and Niddy Estaria. Friends.

----

Raian tried to mask the fact that he was so focused on Majii, but he couldn't help but glance up at her a few times. Was his mind playing tricks on him...? It seemed he was hearing of that rumor, even in her interpretation of a novel.

Now, he told himself, now was not the time to panic. Perhaps he was looking too deeply into things. He would just have to observe her movements and try to figure out her thoughts--and hopefully he would find a window to figure out what was really going on. His mind was mortified at the thought of a man using her and letting her end up like his big sister. She was so pretty too...a pretty face should not be marred by cuts and bruises of any kind. Call him chivalrous, but he thought a lady's wellbeing was to be preserved at all costs, even if it meant putting one's jacket down to keep the hem of her skirt from getting wet, or to loan a parasol on a hot day to keep her fair skin from being burned. Hitting a girl was unheard of in his book.

((lol I just realized Sybil was never pregnant in Dorian Gray. I need to reread.))

Niddy smiled shyly, straightening the enormous bow in her hair and fiddling with her eyepatch.
"Guess so...but I'm useless until my medication wears off, which should be after practice. If you wanna hang around, my sister can take us back to my place and we can work on..." Niddy flipped the half sheet over, "Chapters seven and eight...which should be easy enough. It's just the beginnings of the portrait's transformation and Sybil's suicide...I say we keep it simple and just do a powerpoint or something...leave the showy stuff to Eady and Alyce..." Niddy smiled. There was no doubt in her mind that the power couple was planning on an elaborate musical number.

.....

The rest of the class went by rather slowly for Majii, as she tried to explain basic plot points to Sylvia. Syl wasn't as good with literature as she was, which was understandable, but frustrating. It didn't help that they'd been assigned the first two chapters, the most boring part of the book. By the time the bell rang, Majii was drifting in and out of a state of attentiveness.
During lunch and orchestra, all she could think about was Harrison. She knew that he was very sick, and that the relationship wasn't healthy for either of them, but she still cared for him enough to want him to get better. She knew if she offered him help, he'd simply reject it like he did a thousand times before. The best thing to do was leave, but she couldn't bring herself too. The more he hurt her, the more attached she was, and the more she felt like she needed him. He'd managed to warp her idea of what a relationship should be to the point where her constant fear of him was commonplace. He was a monster, and she hated him at times...but she didn't have the strength to let him go.
She slowly made her way back to Mr. Prestwick's class for detention and sat in her third period desk. She wasn't planning on doing much besides sitting there and thinking, which was always dangerous. The teacher looked up from his laptop and raised an eyebrow.
"You should be doing...something useful while you're here. Don't act like you don't have any homework." Mr. Prestwick said. Majii sighed and took out a mathbook and a few pieces of paper and pretended to work, doodling all over the margins instead. "...Apparently the English department has a meeting today..." Mr. Prestwick got up from his desk and made his way over to the door, stopping to address Raian. "Mr. Go, you don't suppose you could stay and make sure Majii...er...thinks about what she's done for a half hour or so, do you?"

((...I...don't know if he's...still around. If he is that'd be really convenient.))

Comet held that shy smile on his face, trying to look a bit more excited about the project--not about just who he was working with. The very thought of going to Niddy's house appalled him; what luck! To be on the week that he had no work too...

"T-that would be nice..." he replied quietly. "I live near here too...it's walkig distance actually..." He would know, since he walked it every day. Their school was situated in what he called a "pocket" in downtown; though he knew the high-rise buildings were just a few blocks away, the place felt a bit smaller and quainter. The little neighborhood around the school had an area where the houses sold high for their location too; but most of those children would go to private schools. Other students were either from the nearby suburbs, like he wouldn't have been surprised if Niddy was from, and kids who lived in flats above the downtown businesses like himself.

"Mm...I'm already done with that part of the book..." he mumbled as he read over the project requirements. That was good; that way he wouldn't feel so confused.

...timeskip lol~

The end of the day started out normally enough for Comet. Outside of the excitement of getting to hang back and wait for Niddy to finish her cheerleading practice, of course.

It was a bit lonely though, he figured as he strolled alongside one ofthe school building's brick walls. He didn't have Drazil there to talk to, and so the concept of waiting all that time sounded a bit dull.

However, he was quickly proved wrong as a certain near-white colored head pushed through the crowd around him. He could've sworn he heard Drazil's voice; and then she broke through, beaming from ear to ear and skipping up to walk beside him. She seemed...cheerier than usual. Her face was tinged pink from the run, and she walked with a certain bounce in her step. She was dressed like she'd been out in the woods; shorts, a cutoff sleeveless shirt, and tennis shoes, with a bit of dirt smudging the bottom of one of her white legs.

"Comet!" she cried out enthusiastically. "Oh, I have the most wonderful of news--absoltely amazing!"

"Huh?" He arched a brow. What could she want?

"Oh, it was just the greatest day--we left before dawn, it was so romantic--we went hiking, all the way to the waterfall! And we had a picnic lunch, and--" He couldn't quite comprehend the rest of her gushing speech. He presumed the 'we' was she and Rellik, a the least, and they...went hiking?

"I can't understand you, Drazil," he said quietly. "Slow down. What is it you want?"

Her smile grew, if that was even possible, and she giggled girlishly. Shyly, she held up her hand for him to see.

On it glistened an ornate diamond ring. He could put two and two together from that.

"He didn't."

"He did!" She giggled. "Rellik, he--he stood with me on top of the ravine, and--and--" She squealed. "And he asked me to marry him, Comet! He proposed!"

Comet grinned. "That Rellik..." he grumbled. "He didn't even tell me he was planning to do that..." He couldn't say he wasn't expecting for the two to get engaged soon anyway. But he hadn't expected it to be so sudden...Was Rellik trying to rush things?

His kind thought back to their conversation the night before about the death threats. Maybe...no. He shirked the thought off and decided that his roommate had been planning this for longer than that. With a giggling Drazil in tow, he continued making his way toward the gym to wait for Niddy to finish practicing.

----

Raian's day continued still in that preoccupied drone where his thoughts were focused on Majii. When would he get an opportunity to speak to her?

That opportunity came closer than he expected when she had that detenion. He bowed his head in okay to the teacher as the older man made his way to the staff meeting or whatever it was; and then he was finally left alone with her. It was the perfect opportunity to speak to her about her situation and maybe get some answers; behind closed doors, with only her and him, no others to listen in.

He let silence sink in for a while, staring at the ground in front of him in what was almost a mode of disinterest. But after enough time had passed for him to figure that Mr. Prestwick was well on his way to the meeting, he began his investigation.

His words were casual, almost like he was starting idle conversation. "You know," he began, "you are not a very good liar."

For most of practice, Niddy ended up sitting out, much to Alyce's dismay. Even with a doctor's note and the fact that she was practically drooling on her pain medication, Niddy knew the captain couldn't stand a single person out of the pyramid, even if they were a flyer. She brightened up a bit, knowing she would get her bandaged off the next day, and spent the practice flipping through Dorian Gray.

She reread the confrontation between Sybil and Dorian, contemplating her own relationship with Cole. The reason she started tumbling in the first place was because Cole dated almost every girl on the cheerleading squad in middle school, but it turned out that he was attracted to her all along. When she first read the book, Niddy compared herself to Sybil, who gave up on her talents as soon as she fell in love with Dorian. Niddy didn't leave the squad, but it wasn't nearly as important to her as it used to be.

In hindsight, she was a lot more like Dorian, who loved Sybil only for her acting...she wasn't sure if she cared for Cole beyond their initial friendship, or if she was just attracted to his popularity. Of course, she'd never been shallow enough to simply date him because he was well-liked; she did care for him on a platonic level at least. But there wasn't as much reason to be as upset about the breakup as she was...as long as she and Cole were still friends, there shouldn't be a problem. The only reason she was in pain was because she orked so hard to have him for herself, and then she threw it all away with a silly mistake.

Niddy pushed all her thoughts aside and skipped off to find Comet, not even noticing Maysie at her side. Mayvanii was one of her few friends, a fantastic cheerleader, but a very strange girl. She wore more colors than there were in the spectrum, and threw out the strangest comments without warning. In a way, Niddy related to her strangeness, summing it up to social awkwardness combined with a stupid sort of absentmindedness.

Niddy found Comet, and cringed a bit as soon as she saw Drazil...the girl's presence worried her; she seemed so protective of Comet...there were enough people that hated her and she didn't want Drazil on top of them.
"Hey Comet!" Niddy greeted, and Maysie gave an odd sort of whistle.
"Niddy's got a thing for the emo kid..." Mayvanii sang, skipping away before Niddy could find a good retort. She blushed furiously and stammered a bit.

........

As soon as Mr. Prestwick was gone, all the air was sucked out of the room. She remembered Mr. Go asking her about her bruise that morning, but so many people had that she'd forgotten about it. She hadn't paid much attention to the student teacher, and it wasn't until then that she realized: He knew.

There wasn't much she could say in her defense, and the only thing she could hope for was that he would have some mercy on Harrison and let her fight her own battles. But, judging from the look in his eye, that wasn't too likely.

"I...I don't..." Majii stuttered, looking away. After a long pause she finally let out a deep sigh. "...I know. But nobody really cares; everyone figures I'm lying anyway...they just think I'm a slut or something; they don't really..." Majii stared down at the floor, and realized she was shaking. "They're stupid, I guess...Syl's the only one that knows anything, and I haven't even told her about..." she stopped herself. "Why do you care? You don't know me."

Comet blushed. He was pretty well sure Niddy did not have a thing for the emo kid...which he assumed was him. So, he was emo now...? What did he have to do to satisfy people, let them see his scars? They wouldn't like that. Not off of his experience, they wouldn't.

He bit back the urge to glare at the girl and quelled his anger. The girl didn't know. It didn't matter.

His focus reverted back to Niddy. She was so cute. That immediately made him feel better...

"H-hello..." he stammered, smiling. Next to him, Drazil giggled.

"Nice to see you again," she said after him, waving. She was still gushingly happy, he noted; she had, after all, spent the entire time as he waited for Niddy to finish practice talking about her hike that morning. And wedding plans...he cringed inwardly. He didn't know why he found those so inadvertently boring.

At least she wasn't being so defensive. Maybe Rellik had done him so good.

She turned and looked at him. "So this is why you're still waiting around at the school..." It made her laugh for some reason. He simply blushed and stared at the ground. Women...

---

Raian narrowed his eyes at Majii. He was right then...wasn't he? It was as he feared, as soon as she mentioned how everyone was thinking of her.

The boy had to have raped her. Either that, or he really wanted a human punching bag the day before. In one way or another, a romantic afternoon didn't cause a black eye, and her little brother sure as Hell didn't do it. It pained him to think, though, that a pretty little thing like her would let such a terrible sort of person take advantage of her.

Raian sighed and leaned against the whiteboard in the front of the classroom, watching her skeptically.

"I care because..." he chose his words carefully, "...because I have no reason not to. I have seen this happen before... and I don't want you to end up like her. Tell me..." His gaze grew more intense. "What is the boy's name? The one that gave you the black eye. The one who took you into the hallway this morning."

Niddy was surprised and pleased that Drazil seemed less protective of Comet than she was the day before. At least it meant she didn't hate her...hopefully she could find some way to make friends with her, which might help her in some sense...she was nominated for prom queen, right? She probably had lots of friends...maybe those people would stop hating her if they new Drazil liked her.
"Hi, Drazil." Niddy smiled awkwardly. "C-Comet, sorry about Maysie, she's just...weird..." Niddy saw her sister's yellow mustang pull up next to the gym, and cringed a little when she honked for her. "That's Chanti." Niddy skipped down to the car, signaling for Comet to follow.

......

Majii swallowed hard. She didn't know who 'her' was, but it was obvious she'd picked the wrong person to let see her bruise. As soon as she realized that Raian wasn't going to let up, she started shaking in fear. Either Harrison would be convicted and locked away, or he'd get off scott-free and have a personal vendetta against her. She didn't want either to happen, no matter what he'd done to her.

"Harrison Gray..." She whimpered out, completely unable to lie. As she said his name, she reached up to touch her black eye, biting her lip a bit. "It's been...so much worse than this..." she admitted, standing up and zipping down her jacket. There was a part of her that actually wanted Raian to do something, to let Harrison get what he deserved. She let her jacket fall on the desk behind her, revealing every scrape and bruise Harrison had given her in the past week, including the hand shaped ones around her neck. She could feel tears gathering in her eyes. "But...But I still love him, and I know he's sick, but he won't let me help him and I just..." Majii sat back down, sobbing. "I just feel like such a failure...the only reason I stay is so that maybe I can help him change, but...I can't even do that much."

Majii had no idea why she was pouring her heart out to this stranger, but it was oddly freeing. She hadn't said the words to anyone, including herself before, but the fact that Raian cared enough to intervene, even without knowing her made her want to trust him.

Comet stepped forward to follow Niddy, but Drazil's hand stopped him.

"You didn't say you were going anywhere with her, darling." Her voice was tinged with confusion. "She has a boyfriend, you know."

"Not anymore," he replied quietly. "And besides, we have a project to do together...you weren't here today, so..."

She put her hand down, and he walked forward. She followed him; he figured she would walk with him to the road before she made her way back to Rellik's house, as she did every day.

"You guys should have decided to go to Rellik's," she said as she eyed Chanti's car skeptically. "I mean, it's not that far away."

"I know..." He smiled. "I'll be okay."

"But...you haven't ridden in a car since..." She trailed off, and suddenly, his mind put the pieces together and he realized what he was doing.

The last time he'd been in a car was the day of the accident that cost him his eye. He'd avoided them like a plague since, finding other options of travel such as public buses and bicycles. Of course, it left him eighteen years old and without a driver's license, but he supposed that he didn't need one, living in the inner city. Lots of people in the city didn't even own cars should they have a driver's license.

And here he was, about to ride in one. It looked so small, and yellow, and made of metal...

He shook his head of negative thoughts. "I-I'll be okay," he told Drazil with a comforting smile. He needed to get over that phobia at some point anyway.

----

Just at that moment, Harrison Gray came down in Raian's head as the first person in ten years on his blacklist. He grimaced, remembering the last person--the person who beat his sister, and eventually killed her.

Justice must be served on this boy.

He walked up to Majii's desk. Right at that moment...he really was reminded of his big sister's dilemma. Staying with him for 'love...'

But he didn't think it was truly love, to cling to someone who treated her so cruelly. It couldn't be...

"Please..." His eyes were pleading as he put his hands squarely on Majii's desk and stared intently at her eyes. "Get away before it is too late. Some people do not change their ways no matter who tells them to... Trying to change someone who has already chosen their path...it will get you killed!" He had a feeling she wouldn't listen. His sister didn't listen, if he remembered clearly.

But maybe he could make the difference in her life that he'd failed to make for his big sister back then. Just maybe he could stop the nightmare he saw unfolding in her young life.

Niddy scooted to the far end of the back seat, glancing over to Comet. She overheard Drazil and Comet's conversation and shuddered a bit...he hadn't told her that he had any sort of fear of cars...if he had, then she would've walked with him back to her place. It wasn't that far...but Chanti was already there, and telling her to just go on without her wouldn't make her very happy.
"Comet, if you had told me," she began, a concerned look on her face.
"So, who's your new boyfriend?" Chanti jested, cutting Niddy off. Niddy blushed furiously in reply, nervously fixing her bandages.
"He's not my boyfriend...we're working on a project together..." Niddy replied, folding her arms. That was the fourth time someone accused her of having feelings for Comet. Did they look cute together or something? Niddy didn't know, but it didn't stop her from at least acknowledging the fact that Comet was kind of cute...but Cole had broken up with her only the day before, it wasn't right of her to start thinking like that.

......

Majii tried to wipe away her tears, finally looking Raian in the eye. Even though he was obviously enraged at the fact that Harrison touched her, there was still something kind about him...which was probably why he was interfering in the first place.
"Mr. Go....Raian..." She sobbed, taking his hand. "You don't understand...he's a sociopath, and he's obsessed with me...even if I leave him, he's not going to give me up. And it doesn't matter..." Majii rested her head on her desk. "He's taken everything from me, and...I want to die anyway..." It was true, Harrison took away any hope of happiness she had left. She spent her days in constant fear of him, and she couldn't remember a time in the past several months that she'd given a genuine smile. Now that he'd taken her virginity, she was damaged goods anyway. If she left him and found somebody else, she didn't have anything left to give that person. She couldn't help Harrison, she couldn't trust her friends, she could hardly find the strength to even care for her brother, and she had nothing left to live for.
