Way better than you.
Comet blushed at Niddy's mom's comments, keeping his eye plastered on the ground and focusing on putting one foot before the other. The image of older Niddy popped back into his head with the thought of little children--but he was quick to suppress the mental image. Instead, he focused on something a bit easier to drift away from. Snails. Blue snails, doing snail-like things like climbing trees, eating whatever snails ate, coming out in humid weather, moving real slow-like...

Oh. Was he just asked to go up the stairs? He believed he was. "Er, okay..." he said, though he feared it may have been a bit late of him. Snail-land was almost as distracting as Niddy-land was. But not quite so.

((SHORT SHORT SHORT))

---

Solomon suppressed the urge to grumble like an angry old man. It had not been a good day for the educator; somehow, things weren't very lively for the day. Maybe it was the strange behavior of his dau--er, his favorite student who just-so-happened-to-be-related-but-didn't-know. Majii seemed a bit down; he wondered if anyone else caught on or if he was just being paranoid because it appeared that something had put her in low spirits. Or, pehaps, someone? He prayed not. There was only so much he could do as the 'friendly teacher.'

He was just headed to his car to go get his legally-recognized daughter from the daycare when he heard the mumble of voices by the building he was traversing. Knowing it was against school protocol to just consciously leave students unattended, he went to examine the scene.

The sight made him want to grimace. He recognized the back of his Majii's head immediately; he also recognized the boy. He'd seen the two of them around often, but he did not like the concept of their relationship at all. Could she have chosen anyone worse? He didn't like the Grays as a family (they were a bit off-putting when he met them once with his parents in the early days) and there were plenty of rumors circulating about them around the city. Just one more troublesome family of wealth to worry about. His own fatherly instincts filled in the rest of the distrust in the boy, giving him the urge to drag the teenager off and give him a stern talking-to. But that would be overstepping his boundaries; he would have to leave that to the one who claimed to be Majii's father, not himself.

Instead, he stepped in in the way that a teacher can. He just wanted them to stop embracing, like they were mocking him.

He cleared his throat. Loudly. "Public displays of affection are not permitted on school grounds," he chastised formally, keeping his eyes focused on Harrison. He wasn't the sort to give Majii the blame, not even then. "I suggest you stop whatever you are doing and vacate the premises." And maybe leave Majii alone while you're at it, and never talk to her again. "Loitering on campus is also prohibited. Perhaps you should consider your potential charges before proceeding next time, Mister Gray."

Niddy walked up the stairs to her room and stumbled a bit on the last step. She looked back at Comet, remembering how flustered he'd gotten a few minutes ago when he did the same thing.
"This is so crippling and annoying, Comet; I don't see how you can stand it." she lightly complained, pointing at her eye patch. "My coach pulled me out of the pep rally just because she's afraid I'm gonna fall and kill someone." Niddy opened the first door to the right of the stairs. It was just like all the rest of the door in the house, only a small makeshift sign hung from it reading 'Niddy and Harold' in pretty script. "Welp, this is my room." Niddy said, cursing herself for stating the obvious.
Her walls were painted a light lavender color with white trim, various posters of cute animals hanging all around. One corner of her room was nothing but shelves upon shelves of books. The rest of her furniture, including her four-poster bed was all restored antiques, all painted white. In the other corner, next to her closet was her desk, in front of a large window with purple striped curtains. On the end closest to the window was a small terrarium holding her box turtle, Harold. Niddy excitedly ran over to the terrarium and opened the mesh top. "Didja miss me, Harold?" she said in baby talk, taking the empty bowl from his cage and putting in some pellets. With her free hand she opened up her laptop and turned it on, turning back to Comet after she finished feeding Harold.

As soon as she heard the orchestra director's voice, Majii jerked herself out of Harrison's arms and spun to his side, folding her hands behind her back as if she was hiding something. In her peripheral vision she saw Harrison smirk and her stomach lurched. She really didn't want to deal with some sort of incident now, and Mr. Estaron wasn't the type to take back talk lightly. Choose your next words carefully she thought, somehow believing that if she repeated the thought over and over again it would somehow telepathically hit Harrison's brain.
"Well I'm sorry, Mister E!" Harrison said brightly, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I was unaware that a brief conversation with my girlfriend before we went out to the car was loitering and that a hug was a disgusting display of the adolescent libido." Majii slammed her hand against her forehead, saying nothing. She knew if she apologized for Harrison's behavior and pulled him away she would pay later, but the agony of only being able to stand there was killing her. Mr. Estaron liked her, and it seemed that lately, Harrison was able to get a lot of people to stop liking her. If she earned a reputation with her favorite teacher for being Harrison's toady, he might stop letting her babysit Ravera. She loved that little girl, not to mention the fact that her father was sending cash home for groceries so infrequently that she needed the money.

Comet smiled, watching Niddy with her turtle. Somehow, he'd always pictured her bedroom to be exactly as it was, all cute things and pleasant colors. It was very nice. And her interaction with her turtle...it was so sweet! Comet felt that it added to her girlish charm. He liked her even more than he did five minutes ago.

Trying to keep from evaporating into silence again, he glanced about the room and commented good-naturedly, "You have a nice room. It's very...purple." Not that purple was a bad thing. It suited her well. He also noted the wide array of books she had for herself appreciatively; he always wished he had the time to read books, but between his work and school there wasn't much down time. "You like to read, too?" he asked, though he already had a feeling he knew the answer.

---

Solomon leered at Harrison. How dare the boy speak like that to him...! He was quickly falling onto Solomon's 'people I dislike most' list. That is, if he wasn't there already.

"I'm afraid so," he replied coolly, keeping his temper in check. He'd always been taught to control his emotions, after all. "I'm also afraid that you must please relocate this adolescent libido to a location outside of my jurisdiction." His jaw tensed. "I do too recommend that you please hold your tongue and do as commanded by greater authorities. You will also treat me with respect and not refer to my name as a single letter. Or is it too complicated for your thick head to extend two extra sylables into your speeh patterns?" His last words were a bit sharper than intended and he spat them out before he could think them through; but just the sight of Majii with him was off-putting. She jumped away so quickly when he revealed himself to the couple that it almost entertained him; but he wouldn't be happy until she was far away from the boy and until then their presence together only made him angry and, if anything, protective of her.

((I am so creeped out right now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezSZtIlMZGw that girl with black hair minus singing ability IS Majii. What the fuck, universe.))

Niddy smiled back at Comet, remembering the days when she was just as awkward as he was...while she never truly changed, her own social shortcomings began to manifest themselves differently once she got to high school.
"Thanks; guess what my favorite color is..." she giggled.
Comet never really spoke much, but so far most of what he'd said since he arrived was small talk and compliments. She decided she'd try and play along, even though she couldn't stand small talk. With Comet it was somehow less annoying; she could forgive him since he really was trying his best to impress her. (Or at the very least, not put her off) At least he was good at not talking about the weather.
Niddy walked over to the corner of crammed-full bookshelves and knelt down in front of one of the shorter one.
"Heh...yeah. It's all I ever really did before I started tumbling." Niddy replied. "It's somewhat ridiculous," Niddy pulled out a row of three on the end to show Comet that behind the first row was another stack. "I have so many books I hardly have room for them all...I was kind of that weird kid in middle school that just sat in the corner and read and never really talked to anyone." Niddy looked back up at Comet, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear. "With cheerleading I hardly have time anymore, though...but what about you?" Niddy didn't really peg Comet as a reader, considering she had to give him her Dorian Gray. Maybe he had a good reason, though.

Harrison glared back at the teacher and gripped Majii's shoulder tightly. She flinched at the unexpected touch, noting that he was probably doing this to indicate that he was speaking for both of them, even if his words were completely opposite to her thoughts.
"Y'know what? We were about to before you showed up." Harrison shot back. "I guess some of you teachers have nothing better to do than get onto kids over absolutely nothing. But this isn't about us, is it?" Harrison scowled, nodding down at Majii. "You haven't said a word to her. " Majii shuddered. The way he was talking now was starting to freak her out, like he was using her silence to his advantage. "Y'know, if it had been Majii alone you wouldn't have said anything. If she was the one casually calling you Mr. E, you wouldn't say anything. She's your little favorite." Harrison smirked again and gave a dry chuckle. "Sounds to me like you're just personally stereotyping me. I'm hurt. So, so hurt."
Majii bit her lip, her face growing red in both embarrassment and anger. She was so tired of Harrison interfering in her relationships, not just with teachers, but with her friends as well. If any of her male friends approached her or touched her, he lost it. He pulled her away from idle conversation whenever he wanted her to himself, and now she was screwing up her favorite teacher's perception of her. There wasn't much she could do but just stand there and take it, while a thousand exit plans entered her head.
"You really just don't know when to shut up..." Majii whispered. As soon as the words escaped her mouth, she regretted them. She didn't even realize she was saying them out loud. Harrison's playful smirk faded, and he glared back down at Majii.
"...Excuse me?" he said flatly. Majii shuddered. As soon as Mr. Estaron was gone, she was in for it, regardless of whatever apologies Harrison had given her five minutes ago.

Comet kept his eye on the ground, slightly embarrassed. He missed reading books...he'd never been one for television, as he found that words carried much more profound effects. "Er, I used to read a lot..." he stumbeled for words, trying to construct something coherent enough to be understandable but vague enough to not cause her any worry. "Some things have happened since those days though. I hardly have time anymore for anything, and I'm afraid reading is the last thing on my mind..." He blushed. "Hence why I never got around to that, er, book that we've been going through in class..."

He blushed, a little nervous to look back up at Niddy. He didn't really like admitting what kind of issues he had going on with time constraints and the like, especially not to her; he was very fearful of her deciding that she pitied him and only keeping him around because of that. He didn't want to make up any lies, as it wasn't like him to nonchalantly lie; but he didn't really want any truths about his situation out either, for fear she would either be frightened ortoo sympathetic. He figured that maybe, if they somehow became friends, he would tell her all about it one day, and he'd constructed the entire scene in his head almost as many times as he'd imagined telling her what he thought about her. But, neither of those were going to happen, so it was just wishful thinking on his part.

"Maybe I will read again, some day," he mused quietly. "W-what about you? Is that why you keep so many books around? I probably would have just borrowed library books...I remember it being so much cheaper than buying books." Unless that was different around the city from his hometown too. He'd never been to the library to know in the short four or so years he'd been living there.

Something in Harrison's talk made Solomon want to snap. However, yielding to ages of ettiquitte and control passed down to him from past Etsaron family generations, he managed to suppress his anger to a subtle tensing of his jaw and a darkening of his brow. Harrison Gray knew nothing. He made assumptions, and them he stereotyped Solomon himself by accusing him of stereotype. He attempted to play into his enemies' weak points and he usually succeeded and used it to manipulate them. He was the kind of man that Solomon couodn't stand; a typical Gray, manipulative and attemptedly cunning. He tried to control people, Solomon observed, and so far, he was succeeding. The idiot looked and saw, and made generalizations and passed judgment. The boy really knew nothing, and already Solomon hated him just based on what little he knew of him and what he knew of his family.

"You misinterpret the situation, boy. Do not generalize that in which you have no chance to understand," he snapped without thought, immediately regretting his words. What if the boy sought a deeper meaning in his words? He couldn't have any odd rumors going out; whether he saw it for what it was, that he was actually related to her, or if he cane up with some other stupid excuse like pedophile tendencies or strange student interests, that wouldn't be good. Quickly, he dug up a save. "My treatment of Miss Aithera does not differ from other students; however, by being respectful, polite, and obedient, she has earned a concept of trust in which I know she would not be individually causing trouble for the school or the people in it." He looked at Majii for a moment, letting his hardened gaze relax back into his usual expression of cool contemplation as he addressed her. "I am sure you would never call me 'Mr. E' or wander the halls without reason, am I correct? Therefore, I would have no reason to pass such judgments on to you, though I do not understand what possesses you to linger on school grounds on this day. You, however," he looked back up at Harrison, "have only been a defiant problem in what few situations in which I have encountered you. Such defiance is repeated on this day, and for that, I can presume that you are the most likely orchestrator of this blatant display of school code violations and therefore the one I must address." he narrowed his eyes, carefully monitoring his own formal tone.

Niddy looked up at Comet, fully engaged as it was the first time they had held a real conversation. She nodded her head in understanding, knowing for herself how difficult it was to find time to read for pleasure between cheerleading practice and homework. Even if she had a spare moment, her mother was always trying to find ways to get her involved in some sort of do-it-yourself project. It was sad; she just got a hold of the entire Bran Hambric series and hadn't been able to get past the first three chapters in months.
But for some reason, she saw that Comet's business and whatever his other reasons were were not so much nuisances as her's were. Seeing him blush was so adorable, but also a bit troubling. Apparently he'd moved to the city when he started high school, but why? And of course there was the loss of his eye, which he covered up with an emo haircut. But obviously, he didn't want her to know what was troubling him. Perhaps she could pry it out later that evening with small talk.
"Well, I do like libraries..." Niddy smiled. "But I like owning books, more. I like being surrounded by them, having them in my hands...and I love the smell of them. Plus I'm always getting them as gifts from my family. And this is everything I've read since I was little. Behind some of them you'd probably find some Goosebumps or Nancy Drew books...I'll check them out from the library if I can't afford to buy them at the time, but if I like the book I really don't wanna give it back!" Niddy giggled. "Once, after I finished reading The House of the Scorpion, I just kept it and paid the fee. I'm bad." Niddy stood up again and walked back over to her desk, unplugging her laptop. "We should probably go ahead and get to work, though. If we get too distracted we won't get anything done."

______________

Majii looked up at Solomon as she was addressed, but still felt Harrison's eyes burning into her skin. It made her wince; it was almost a physical pain that awakening several aftershocks of the day before and the incidents leading up to it. As soon as something angered him, everything about him was violent, even his gaze. He gripped her shoulder tightly, telling her she needed to choose her next words very carefully.
"Well, I..." Majii chirped out, searching for something that might dispel Harrison's rage and save Mr. Estaron's trust. Harrison squeezed her shoulder even tighter, his fingers pressing into fresh bruises. Majii did her best to ignore the pain and keep on thinking. Finally, she came up blank. The only option left was the truth. "I had detention with Mr. Prestwick today. I was just about to walk home, but it turns out Harrison waited for me so he could drive me home...he really is telling the truth, just...in his way." Harrison's grip loosened, and his taunting smirk returned.
"Ya see? Am I now absolved for the dreadful sin that is loitering now that you've heard the truth from the lips of a trusted little dove? One who, as it turns out, is a bit of a delinquent herself?" Harrison asked in his grand tone. Majii clenched her fists and rolled her eyes at his words.
"I chewed some gum..." She countered quietly.
"Flim flam." Harrison replied with a dismissing wave of his hand.
