Physical Data
Genders:Male, Female
Average Height:--Male: 2.3-2.6 m
--Female: 2.2-2.4 m

Skari (Avis sapiens) are a warm-blooded avian sentient race of the class Aves and subcass Neornithes. They are notable as being the only sentient species discovered thus far with the ability to fly under its own power, and as the only species in the class Aves to exhibit human levels of intelligence. They are believed to have originated from the planet Aquilae Prime in the Despotes Alpha system in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. Descended from a common ancestor that remained extant until 1 million years ago, modern Skari first appeared about 200,000 years ago, as evidenced by the fossil record. Although multiple bird species have demonstrated tool use and mimicry of human language, Skari are thus far the only avians to develop the ability to think abstractly and possess natural language ability. Physically, they resemble ratite birds on Earth, the order that includes large flightless birds such as emu and ostriches, but they are able to fly and exhibit beaks structurally similar to those of parrots.

Origin and Evolution

Modern day Skari are evolved from an extinct avian species known as the Tskana. Tskana were larger and bulkier, with decreased ability to fly. Isolated populations in harsh environments eventually adapted by decreasing their body mass, thus allowing them to fly further distances with little to no change in their wing muscles. 1 million years ago, the Tskana became extinct, and early Skari were the next stage in the evolution of the species. Early Skari were larger and sported a thicker coat of feathers and smaller brain; nor did they molt. This was because they were non-migratory, and remained in one biome during most of the year. Forgoing molting allowed the early Skari to maintain the same protective coat of feathers during the cold and wet seasons of their habitats.

For various reasons, most prominently displacement due to irrevocable changes to their habitats that occurred during Aquilae Prime's Ice Age 200,000 years ago, the Skari species began to migrate. They became scavengers, constantly moving from place to place. Stronger wing muscles developed to accommodate this behavior. Skari began to settle down into permanent communities around 5,000 CE once again; yet, the large muscle mass remained, allowing modern Skari to move under their own power about the planet, interacting with other communities. These social interactions spurred the cultural and intellectual development characteristic of the modern Skari species.
