Description: Virginia is a short and slender woman, with a small build. A couple years of not eating quite enough have her starting to lose weight, and you can just make out the outline of her ribs if you were in the position to see her that way. She has blonde kinky hair, which frames her oval face. Set in her face as if stones are her hard blue-green eyes, made that way from several years of dealing with her husband and his drinking problems. Her nose and cheeks are very lightly freckled, only visible from very close.

She would be pretty, if her face was not covered or obscured in any way by the dirt and grime that is part of living on the streets. Her tanned skin as well, detracts from the era's idea of beauty, and marks her as one of not-so-well-to-do (pale skin being the epitome of beauty for the wealthy, and something that others do well to imitate).

She is poor, and thus have very little time or money to spend on appearances. She has a total of one outfit consisting of a pale blue blouse that is fraying on the edges, and several sizes too large, a bodice that is slightly too small, a long brown skirt that has numerous patches of slightly different shades of brown, a pair of sturdy boots (the only item she could justify paying more for higher quality), and a tattered old coat which she found abandoned on a street one day.

Strengths & Weaknesses:
No one would call Virginia a fighter. She is not physically imposing, nor is she very strong, despite what she thinks. Both her stature and lack of natural strength count against her when it comes to combat. As if neither of those were enough, she does not enjoy engaging in physical activity, so she will never be able to master any skills of fighting. She cannot read, having never received anything beyond a 'proper' education, and she is not terribly wise. Many people find her habit to tell long, drawn-out stories incredibly annoying.

Virginia does have some skills. She has incredible focus and determination- she has been able to persevere through almost anything (her marriage being one, until she decided to have her husband murdered). She is also very good at bartering- there are very few times she has walked away without what she considers a good deal. She can sew and cook, but only passably. She considers her greatest strength her ability to recall things perfectly- she can hear someone give a long speech, and for a long time afterward, she is able to give the speech word for word- with nearly the same intonation as the original speaker did. While that does not serve her well very often, there are occasionally occasions where it has worked to her benefit.

History: Virginia was born in Dublin to an Irish mother, and English father (a member of a traveling faire, and a performer by trade). By the time Virginia was born they had already had one daughter- Jennifer, and were hoping that Virginia would be a son. But, they were out of luck.

From the earliest Virginia could first remember, her mother was raising her and trying to teach to her the importance of marrying well and being a good wife. To that end she was taught how to sew (she had more talent sewing the clothes onto her) and cook (the food came out more or less edible).

Later on her parents had another child, and she could remember all the excitement when everyone was sure that it would be a son. But the child wasn't. Once again fate had conspired against them, and they had a daughter- though this time they named her Maureen.

When Virginia was ten, and there was hardly any work to be found, Patrick moved his family to England, where he was able to secure a job in London as a dockworker on the Thames river.

Though they never had quite enough food on the table, or the cleanest clothing, it was a happy childhood for Virginia. Her parents loved all their children, and made sure they did have good times. Virginia fondly looks back on the times when she was a child, when the entire family was together. But things are seldom static for long, and children grow up.

Jennifer, being the prettiest of the family by far, had attracted the attentions of a young merchant's son, and so Patrick agreed to give her hand in marriage. Virginia and Maureen were sad to see their older sister go, but happy that she was going to be well taken care of (it was rumored that her husband was in line for a large fortune, though whether there was any veracity to the rumor remains to be seen).

Jennifer was able to procure a job for Virginia, convincing her new sister-in-law that Virginia would make a fine maid, and as long as Virginia was only given tasks for cleaning, then she was a fine maid indeed.

A couple years later when Virginia was working on her employers' country estate, she met an attractive young man while out at the market shopping. The man tried several times to engage her in conversation, but Virginia ignored him, and left to return to the estate. A couple days later she saw him again when she went to the market, and this continued until every time she went to the market she saw him there. Every time she would show up he would be waiting to recite poetry to her (though it was awful poetry, Virginia was touched by the gesture).

Finally, the young man, named Benjamin Jenkins, had somehow found a way to contact Virginia's father, and asked for her hand. Even when he heard there was nothing in the way of a dowry to be paid at all, no fortunes, he still wished to marry her. Virginia's father, Patrick, agreed, and four months later Virginia and Benjamin were married.

Soon after they were married problems began cropping up. Ben would go out late at night, and not come home until the morning, completely drunk or suffering under the effects of a hangover. When Virginia would confront him about it, he would become very angry and occasionally beat her. Not all his nights were spent in taverns though- he spent many a night in a brothel as well, and other nights still gambling.

Virginia had given up her job as a maid when she married, thinking that there would be no need for her to have it- she was to cook, clean, and take care of the family- if there were to be any children. But with dwindling amounts of money, she went back to her former employers and begged to have her own job back. For a while she was making enough to cover for Ben's drinking and spending, but he continued to increase the amount he would spend on food and whores.

Virginia always preformed her duties as a wife, to the best of her ability, and the fact that Ben would spend money on whores angered her. She could understand men wanting to drink to dull the pains of life for the commoners, which was always work and never much payoff, even though she was not too fond of the drink herself.

One day a man came to the door and warned her if Ben did not start paying back his debts, he would be in trouble. The next day, when Virginia told Ben who had come, they had packed immediately and fled. The next few years they spent fleeing from town to town.

Finally they decided that a more drastic action needed to be taken, and they sold what they had left, and bought passage out to Port Royal, Jamaica, hoping for a new start, and a reprieve from their debtors.

Ben swore that he would forsake drinking and other women, but he did not keep it for long, and within a fortnight he was out drinking and spending the nights with whores.

At her wit's end with his behaviour, and finding no help with others through conventional means, she has decided that it is time to seek more unconventional means to rid herself of a troublesome husband.
