Description:

Elizabeth is a tall, slender young woman with brown eyes and long dark blond hair, which is most often seen swept up as is the fashion. She has clear pale skin that she protects from the sun, since as a child she was prone to freckling, which is decidedly unladylike. Although she is not so worried about fashion as some other women in Port Royal, Elizabeth can’t deny (at least to herself) that she likes to look good. You can always count on Elizabeth to showcase the latest fashions in women’s clothing, thanks to a loving father who needs no excuse to buy his daughter nice things.

Elizabeth leads a rather serious life as daughter of the governor of Port Royal, so she can usually be seen wearing a very concentrated expression exuding good breeding and respectability, which over the years has developed into something of a pout. She has also mastered the art of polite smiles and courtesy laughs. However, when she is truly amused by something, you can tell when her nose wrinkles as her smile grows.

Elizabeth is used to getting her way, so she can be a bit stubborn and wilful at times. She is also a woman who knows her mind and is not afraid to say what she is thinking. She will curb this tendency in public, however, because she dearly loves her father and tries her best not to do anything that will disappoint her father or hurt his reputation.

Elizabeth is a smart young woman. She picks up things quickly, and she reads a lot on virtually any subject, although her guilty pleasure is reading about pirates. Because of this, she has a somewhat romantic view of the world of piracy and adventure. Her recent experience with actual pirates has made this perception a bit more realistic, but the proverbial glasses through which she views the world still retain a slightly rosy hue.

Strengths:

Elizabeth tries to do what she honestly thinks is right. This can be affected by her relationships with other people—for instance, she will hold back for her father’s sake in certain situations—but in general she makes her own decisions based on her own morals.

Elizabeth is a brave young woman. For one thing, she is not one to jump at shadows and she’s not afraid to join in the fray, especially if it means protecting someone she loves. Also, growing up without a mother in a household with an oft-absent, albeit loving, father, she’s learned to keep a stiff upper lip, no matter what. As she recently discovered, this can even hold true in highly volatile situations, such as being kidnapped by pirates.

Elizabeth cares deeply about those she has connections with. She values people who are decent and forthcoming, those who do not feel like they have to create a persona which is acceptable to the general public. In all honesty, she envies them this way of living which her position in life has denied her. Once Elizabeth has created a relationship with someone, it takes a lot to break her trust and loyalty.

Elizabeth can think on her feet. She is good at reading people and situations, and she retains knowledge well. Because of this, she can analyze a situation and quickly come up with an efficient plan to get the job done, even under pressure.

Weaknesses:

Elizabeth can only dream of what it would be like to live a carefree life without the demands of propriety. In fact, she often does, which makes her less satisfied with own life and sometimes even distracts her. She definitely believes that the grass is greener on the other side, so she can miss the signs indicating otherwise, even the obvious ones.

Elizabeth is a woman, and a young woman at that, so despite the sense of responsibility and maturity she possesses, sometimes her emotions get the better of her. When this happens, her judgment can be clouded and she may make decisions that she would otherwise deem foolish. She can also be somewhat impulsive.

Elizabeth has led a fairly sheltered life, so her view of the world is somewhat skewed. She has never wanted for anything and, other than the loss of her mother, she has known little sorrow. She reads a lot and therefore thinks that she knows how the world works, but considering much of what she reads is rather idealized, she is more naive than she realizes. This can lead her to be a bit too trusting at times and can get her into situations that are over her head.

History:

Elizabeth was born into privilege to Weatherby and Charlotte Swann. Her father was a member of the House of Commons, so the family had a home on his estate in Kent as well as an established household in London for the season. Sadly, when Elizabeth was three years old, her mother contracted scarlet fever and died. Weatherby was heartbroken when his wife died, and his only comfort was his young daughter. She travelled back and forth between London and Kent with her father as well as a nurse and, when she was older, a governess. Her father doted on her, and so she received the best education money could buy, as well as anything else her father thought she might require.

Weatherby worried that his daughter might be lonely, being the only child in a busy political household, so for a few summers he sent Elizabeth, along with her governess, to visit her mother’s family in Devonshire. Her aunt and uncle lived near the coast, and she had several cousins to play with. Elizabeth enjoyed playing with her female cousins, and they had many a picnic or tea party with their dolls out on the lawns. However, it was her male cousins who first introduced her to the world of pirates. Living near the coast as they did, they took Elizabeth with them down to the piers to meet the old sailors and hear the stories that they had heard time and time again. When Elizabeth’s aunt found out, she was furious and gave her sons quite a scolding. The next few summers, Elizabeth had to be much more furtive in her attempts to learn more about pirates. It was at this young age that she learned to keep a proper public appearance while secretly indulging her imagination.

Elizabeth was new to this life of duplicity, however, and not as good at being secretive as she thought. When her aunt told Weatherby about what Elizabeth really did during the summers, he decided it would be better to keep her with him at home. Elizabeth was a very wilful child, however, and she could not be stopped from feeding her growing interest in the world of piracy, although she did try to keep it from her father as she knew it upset him. She also tried to be equally diligent in her academic pursuits in order to not disappoint him.

As the years went by, Weatherby became more and more established in the Whig party of the House of Commons, pushing forward many bills that were both popular and lucrative. His actions did not go unnoticed. When Elizabeth was twelve years old, the King elected her father to be the governor of the new colony in Port Royal, Jamaica. Elizabeth was not too upset to leave England behind; she looked forward to the new adventure it would be living in a foreign and exotic land. She also enjoyed the sea voyage immensely, as it meant constant exposure to sailors who could tell her more about pirates. Most seemed wary of talking to her, but she was able to find a few who enjoyed sharing a tale or two on deck as they went about their work. Her father tried to dissuade her, but he was busy with business matters much of the time and could not always keep track of her.

This was a voyage of many firsts for Elizabeth. It was her first time onboard a ship. It was her first time leaving England. It was her first time meeting James Norrington, then a lieutenant who seemed fairly amused at her naive ideas about pirates. It was also the first time she met Will Turner, who was rescued from a shipwreck and immediately became a person of interest when she discovered a pirate medallion on his person. And finally, it was her first foray into the reality of piracy, with a quick glimpse of a pirate ship through the fog.

Although Elizabeth and Will became friends during their few days together onboard the Dauntless, once established in Port Royal, Elizabeth was no longer permitted to associate with him. She was no longer a child but a young woman, and her father held a very prestigious position, both of which meant an increase in lessons on all things proper. She became a very accomplished young woman, outwardly committed to the life of a governor’s daughter if not wholeheartedly.

As she grew older, Elizabeth began to take on more and more responsibilities as lady of the household as well as the daughter of the governor. She was well respected and generally well liked, although she found it hard to make friends with some of the women in Port Royal, who were very much interested in rank and wealth and not much else. She realized she was coming of a marriageable age, but she was in no hurry to find a husband. Her father was not keen to lose his daughter just yet, so he did not push her too much, either.

It was around this time that Elizabeth became aware of James Norrington’s interest in her. He had continued to move up the ranks of the Royal Navy, and he was a fine man in all respects. Everyone thought they would be a perfect match, and they might have been except for two things: despite all this time, Elizabeth still secretly carried a torch for young Will Turner, and she still had a great interest in pirates and their lives of high adventure which made the life of a housewife seem dull in comparison. And so while she respected Captain Norrington and saw his potential as a good husband, she did nothing to encourage his interest.

When Elizabeth was twenty years old, one fateful day changed the course of her life forever. After a tight corset coupled with anxiety from a marriage proposal from Commodore Norrington caused a fainting fit, Elizabeth fell off of Fort Charles and into the bay where she was rescued by a pirate, one Jack Sparrow. This dirty and ill-mannered man did not match Elizabeth’s romanticized image of a pirate, and she was even less pleased when he held her hostage. That same evening, a whole ship of pirates attacked the city. Using her knowledge of the Pirate Code, Elizabeth was able to gain an audience with Captain Barbossa, which resulted in her saving the town but being kidnapped herself.

The following week found her held captive by cursed pirates, sliced across the hand as an offering to heathen gods, marooned with Jack Sparrow on a tiny island, rescued by and engaged to James Norrington, escaping the marines of His Majesty’s Royal Navy in order to set free a crew of pirates, and held at gunpoint. All told, her vision of piracy had become slightly disillusioned and a bit more realistic. She became a bit more personally involved when she helped Jack Sparrow to escape custody yet again. Although she regretted hurting Norrington in the process, this was outweighed when she found herself with a new ally, if not almost a friend, in Jack Sparrow and, more importantly, happily engaged to Will. Although back in Port Royal, the daily routine picked up once again, Elizabeth’s life would never be the same.

Sample/Past Roleplay:

(FYI, for the intents of this RP, Governor Swann was an NPC)

Elizabeth, seated near a window in the drawing room, looked up from her book to see her father coming through the doorway, two gentlemen standing behind him in the entrance hall. Her purpose in choosing the drawing room as the location for her relaxation was two-fold. One, this room had the most windows and provided the best light, which made it a regular reading spot of hers. Two, she had been hoping that Will would be able to take some time off today and visit, and the drawing room was the best room for receiving callers. In fact, she had heard the arrival of the visitors and her heart had leaped, until she realized that Will would have walked rather than taking a carriage. Therefore, whoever had arrived would not be him.

Glancing at the two men behind her father, she saw that she was correct. The visitors were in fact Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company and his clerk. Elizabeth had only met the pair briefly, and she struggled to remember his name. Mr… Mason? No, something more unusual. Rising from her seat, she crossed the room to stand next to her father, waiting to be introduced.

Governor Swann beamed as he saw his daughter approaching and declared, “Ah, Lord Beckett, Mr. Mercer, you remember my daughter, Elizabeth?” He had had business dealings frequently with Lord Beckett since his arrival, but he seemed to think it had been quite some time since Elizabeth had last interacted with either of the two men.

Elizabeth nodded her greeting to the callers, and then replied, “If you’ve business to conduct, I’ll continue my reading elsewhere.” She debated relocating to the garden, which would be just as suitable for visiting with Will should he arrive, so long as the wind didn’t pick up. However, she was also awfully curious to find out the reason for Beckett's arrival. She hoped something would be mentioned before she left.
