After long days of complete media silence, the state television started emitting, and these messages were immediately echoed by virtually all television station in the region.

A man that some would recognise as Dmitri Alexeievich, the leader of the United Democratic Opposition or UDO, sat in a modest studio with a single Ukrainian national flag prominently displayed.

"Good day to all, as President of the Provisional National Council of Ukraine I, Dmitri Pavlov Alexeievich, have the pleasure to greet you in this, first ever, free and truthful transition on the Ukrainian National Television. The news is that of our difficult, but courageous and patriotic victory over what was still left of the Goykov regime - the tyrant has been taken infront of military tribunal and sentenced to death for his crimes against our great nation. This was done once we have overcome the resistance of the troops still loyal to him after the National Armed Forces sided with us, the rightful and democratic representatives of the people of the Ukraine.

The war is over, we have won! Let us all return to our homes and rejoice in our victory!

As for the friendly and brotherly help of the Kingdom of Veomo, we are most thankful and this event shall forever live in the harts of Ukrainians. You have made it possible for us to bring down the Goykov regime that had disgraced us for over two decades; we will not forget this, we will be forever grateful. Now Ukraine can be a free, democratic, and sovereign nation. Your help was most appreciated, but now is your time to leave, you've done more than enough, our honourable Veomese neighbours.

And to start anew as a democratic nation, with the rule of law above all else, we shall have elections as soon as things have normalised. The elections shall be for the National Constitutive Assembly, as this constitution that Goykov and his mock-parliament have left us with is a disgrace to both law-abiding citizens everywhere and the basic ideals of human rights.

Again, the war is over, we have won. Let us all return to our homes and rejoice in our victory, preparing for the challenges of tomorrow."

The message was later repeated in Veomese, yet later in English.

Helene was on hold with Secretary Adair of Byronmandy when Jason called her as she flew to Danemark-Chicander. They had a quick chat over the Ukraine issue yet again, before switching to election talk in the Northern Isle.

"So the war is over, Jason?"

"Well, the civil war in Kyiv is."

"Is it me, or are we the only ones who pronounce Kyiv like this?"

"Helene, that's not the point. The opposition has called for calm in the region, thanked the Veomese for their assistance in forcing out Goykov and asked them to leave."

"As would be expected. Is Goykov still under guard by the opposition forces?"

"Try a kangaroo court."

"Ah, a bit excessive but passions run deep in the Ukraine. What's the word from Veomo?"

"Nothing yet, although we know they were securing their bases around Kyiv before the release of statements through Neoplantan television."

"Well, this could become a bit more serious Jason. If Veomo now invades Kyiv, there would be clear evidence their intent on the war was not one of peace or weaking a foe - it was only a land grab."

"Exactly. I think North Chicanan needs to come out in support of the United Opposition in the Ukraine."

"And call for Veomo to leave?"

"Of course."

"Is there concern for a power vacuum in the region?"

"Obviously. What i was thinking was, like every other state in the region, to offer to send troops."

"Er...Jason, why?"

"Peace-keeping. The troops would assist the Ukrainians for a three-month period while they stabilized the region."

"Ah."

"So?"

"Not completely sold on the whole calling out Veomo idea, although I trust we are of the same mind on the issue and may not be the only state thinking this. Issue a press leases supporting the Ukrainian opposition, offer to send...hm...1000? members of the Northern second brigade for peace-keeping and rebuilding the national army. Call for a return to a democratic Ukraine free of interference from outside aggressors - that way we can suggest Veomo knock it off without really saying it - and that we show solidarity with the Ukrainians in this time of chaos.'"

"Sounds like a plan. And if Veomo presses on?"

"We get in touch with the United Provinces, Neoplanta, San Lumen, Monaco and Byronmandy and call for action against an agressor state. Hell, three of them are already involved in the conflict, I think they can reign in the Veomese if necessary."

"Well thought, First Minister. I'll have Gino prepare and release the statement tonight, I'd suspect you'll have questions from the Northern press...and the new Northern press, when you land in Charlottetown."

"I expect so, I'm waiting on Adair to answer his phone to discuss the matter further."
----------------------------

President Fillweed signed the press statement after his personal secretary typed it and it cleared his State Affairs Minister's desk. As discussed, the statement called for a return to normalcy within a newly-democratic Ukraine free from interference, announced recognition of the United Democratic Opposition as the true representatives of all Ukrainians, congratulated them on their plans for elections and a new constitution as quickly as possible and promised troop support to bring the state back to a relatively peaceful status within three months. They chose to ignore the kangaroo court and quick execution of Goykov although the action was a bit too brash and underhanded. Northern support went to the people of the Ukraine in this time of great change, Fillweed wrote in closing, and we will always support the will of the people.

Hen then kept an eye on reports from Neoplanta, San Lumen and Veomo just to see what the Veomese had planned now that the capital had fallen to the Ukrainian opposition. He chose to get in touch with leaders in Neoplanta on the issue.

The phone rang once.

"Good evening Marshal Iubek, what are the news from Kiev?"

"Good evening Premier Kendar" the voice answered on the on the other side of the line. "Our troops report the civil war is over. Kiev has fallen. The UDO finally managed to overthrown Goykov, and execute him, they say it was after a summary judgement by a military tribunal, but our watchers inform us it was a rather summary execution."

Premier Kendar was waiting for this day since the civil war broke up in Kiev.

"Who claims to be in charge?"

"That would be Dmitri Pavlov Alexeievich, a UDO militant, and apparently one of the leaders of the insurgents. And they require we leave Ukraine at once."

"Alexeievich, Alexeievich, why do I recall this name?" wondered the Premier. That very moment a though crossed over his mind. "Markum, is he anyhow related to Vasily Petrov Alexeievich?"

"The extreme right activist? I'll have my people look into it."

"Do that, meanwhile I'll contact the Grand Duke. We must be cautious now. We don't want to leave the pan to fall into the fire."

They both hanged the phone, as Marshal Markum Iubek contacted the several agencies of the Grand Duchy to gather more information on the new Ukrainian "in-charge person", Premier Gustav Kendar had a much harder task ahead: inform the Grand Duke and figure out what the Duchy next step would be. The Grand Duchy would remain silent for the moment being.

It had been a chaos around the RIS (Royal Intelligence Service), the intelligence agency in charge of the foreign intelligence of the Grand Duchy. Since the order of investigating the past of both the UDO and of Dmitri Pavlov Alexeievich one of their leaders, and now the self proclaimed leader of Ukraine.

Nikolai Andropov, Director of the Foreign Operations Directorate, was reading some reports at his office when Commander Nika Kurchenko, one of the best operatives of the Grand Duchy enters the room.

"Have you got anything for me Nika?" the director asked without raising his eyes from the papers he was reading.

"Sir, several of our sources informed us that Dmitri is indeed related to Vasily Petrov Alexeievich, he is his son." This was enough to make the Director raise his eyes from the documents. "Are we sure of this?" he asked
"Yes sure, we are, we managed to get his records from the UDO HQ" she made a pause "That's not all sir we also have informations regarding the UDO." Nika grabs a remote control on the central table of the Director office, and with a click, the screen set across the room was now showing information about the UDO. "Despite of their name, the UDO is actually a Ultra nationalist party, a former sub division of the Svoboda."

"Thank you Nika" the director said while grabbing the phone. "You can leave now."

As Nika left, the director marked the number of the Premier's office. This kind of information was vital to the Grand Duchy.

Helene was examining the Pravka Office Complex in Copenhagen. The site was selected to hold state officials that would oversee Danemark-Chicanader while the territory organized itself within the confines of the St. Marc's Accord. While space was being renovated she looked over her own private office - and the office for all future First Ministers while in the region. She received a call from the President while there, and had a long discussion over the failures of talks in the United Provinces - which both had expected since all that was discussed was the Ukraine. They also moved on to topics over Veomo, their news sources and what to expect of the UDO.

"So the Grand Duke says he's an Ultra?"

"Yes Helene."

"And what does this mean? In political context, I mean. Unless Dynamo Kyiv held ardent fans, I don't get the context."

"I suspect they are saying they are a far-right party."

"Ah, fascists. I assume they will use this as grounds for controlling all of the Ukraine?"

"Of course. As the talks in the Provinces showed us, they have no interest in international assistance, they appear to want the Ukraine for themselves."

"Any evidence to suggest they are lying on the info? I know Abraham is on his way here but if Veomo is serious about their claims of party affiliation, we'd need some evidence of actions against the Veomese or the Ukrainians before withdrawing our recognition of the party."

"So far none. It's more of them using name and evidence collected from a raid on their party offices in Odessa."

"So no confirmation on legitimacy then, Jason."

"None."

"I'm aggravated over the issue, Jason. If the Grand Duke was sincere in just wanting to prevent the Ukraine from striking back ever again - which is a ridiculous assertion anyways - then he should have given more support for the Neoplanta plan. Although any plan directly involving Byronmandy or Monaco makes me raise my eyes a bit more."

"Of course. They said they wanted to look at the plan, but their willingness to say they would not relinquish the Ukraine until they were satisfied and still calling it a protectorate tells me they want this alone. And the United Provinces' continued support means they'll have one ally regardless of the legitimacy of their findings."

"I'll have Abraham work with our connections in the region - however weak they are - and see what we can find out about the UDO ourselves, as well as Svoboda. I don't see a need to alter course yet, as the Finnish Reich and Vulkland, even with governments we turn our noses at, have yet to show they carry the nationalistic rhetoric to carry out attacks on non Finns or...um...Vulks? Corporationists?"

"Something like that. I'm still working on talking with the Neoplantan officials and I suppose I could try and get in touch with the ministers in Monaco and Byronmandy. Personally if one or the other have to be involved, make both of them do it and play nice for once."

"I hardly see that working, Jason."

"Well First Minister, it's worth a shot."

"Of course Mister President."

The Minister of Defense, Marshal Markum Iubek followed by Commander Nika Kurchenko and Director Nikolai Andropov enters the dispatch of Premier Gustav Kendar.

"Gustav, I just got something you'll like" said the Minister handing over a folio with the Ministry of Defense seal on it to the Premier

Spoiler: click to toggle

"Do we have any confirmation on this Markum?"

The Minister of Defense simply looked at Nika who promptly spoke:

"Yes sir, as soon as we got the information we verified it with the IIS and with our sources at Ukraine, and it seems it isn't all. Their suspicion of Dmitri being in contact with the network proved to be short. As you know since his proclamation as President of the Provisional National Council of Ukraine we have placed a tail at him, his reports, although showing nothing out of ordinary, have been enlightening this last few days, it appears the leak of information made him a very nervous man. And he have been making several call to these three numbers." She said handing over another folio to the Premier, this one with the RIS seal on it.

"But these are Neoplantan numbers. Do we know of whom?" the Premier was genuinely surprised with this bit of information. Would that be someway related to the recent interest Neoplanta was showing in Ukraine? He thought and hope it was of someone outside the Neoplantan government.

This time was Director Nikolai whom spoke

"Yes, we do. They are all registered to Neoplantan magnate Ulrich Jürgen. He owns a multinational logistic company, specialized on large cargoes, the company is registered as MLC."

"Is he anyhow related to their government?" was the most important question to ask

"Not that we are aware sir. But his company may have some lobbying leverage, even more in a democracy."

"This is very interesting and disturbing. Inform the IIS of this, and also try to get some more intel on Ulrich Jürgen. Keep it quiet though, if he is one of the big fishes we don't want him disappearing."

Ulrich Jürgen sat at his large mahogany table in his villa in Constantia, Rumania, Neoplanta. After a long business day, he still needed to go through a lot of numbers pertaining to his shipping company. But as if he hadn't enough to worry about, these Ukrainians were constantly nagging him over the phone.

"Dmitri, I told you to use this number only in case of emergency. Your shipment is already in the Aegean, it will be here tomorrow, you will be getting it the day after tomorrow. There is no data trail behind it, you need not worry about what happens in the Provinces. It was nice doing business with you - good night."

Normally, his business was legit, but the potentials in shipping were just so overwhelming, he had to take some chances. In his 50s, he had been in the shipping business all his life. First it was a few crates of forged goods, then it was refugees, and now it was guns. This latter only happened because Jürgen had a personal conviction to help the Ukraine in this war. He would not let the Veomese just do as they wanted; the Ukraine had to be free from them in his view, one that many in Neoplanta shared, but mostly did nothing about.

Dmitri Alexeievich was having a bad week. He thought the war was over, that the Ukraine was finally free, but the Veomese army showed no sign of wanting to leave. The soldiers acted as if they owned the place, occasionally throwing remarks saying this is now liberated Veomese territory. This, he saw, could lead only to one thing - war. And if one intends to fight a war, one must have weapons. Fortunately, he had his connections, and many generous sponsors willing to give everything for a free Ukraine.

But there was also a different thing pressing him, one deep within his soul. The burden of his father, Vasily, and his legacy. In a country such as the Ukraine, connections were everything, and his father was the leader of the underground resistance. He had inherited this role the way he would have inherited leadership of a tribe. However, the principal dogma of the organisation was founded on the ideals of nationalism, on the myths of the historic empire that was founded in Kiev - the Kievan Rus and Mother Russia. These were ideals he questioned from since his adolescence. By this time he has nothing but pity for those who believe in such things - ethnicity and origin mean nothing to him, he himself is a democrat, a liberal, a socialist. He had tried to turn the organisation in his direction, and has achieved a certain success, but the roots of nationalism run deep, and if he chose to go against them directly, he knew he would be overthrown and a true nationalist, absorbed in the mythos of his glorious predecessors, and utterly clueless of the ways of the world, would quickly take his place, plunging the Ukraine into disaster.

He had no real problem with acting the role of the leader of a national democratic movement. He could always use a few words of nationalist rhetoric to convince most people of his ideas, even if there was no nationalism related to the question at all. But to lead these people into war under the banner of nationalism, now that was a different issue entirely. Could he force this role upon himself, could he swallow his socialist pride and declare to the people that 'these Veomese scum need to be killed, for they are no Ukrainians and have no right to thread on the sacred soil soaked with the blood of our ancestors and our brave brothers who fell to free our land.'? Could he do this? And if he did, could they win against these Veomese? Will the world help them? In his view, socialism was weak, and few to none were fighting against the all-consuming greed of the imperialists that was now assaulting his homeland. And he was not keen on dying for a noble cause... What is he to do, what is he to do ... ?

Ukrainian Territory

The Grand Ducal troops, were now on a peacekeeper force. Colonel Dmytro Zelenko had been assigned as Special Link Officer, between the Self Proclaimed Provisional Government and the Grand Duchy. The provisional government never received him, despite of all efforts made. For the last days, since he had been appointed to such duty, he had been trying to get a meeting with Dmitri, or some other officer of the UDO that now was the Provisional Government with no success. Each day he spent trying to contact the committee that now acted as government, each day a new excuse not to receive him. This day was no different.

Meanwhile, the Grand Ducal Army opened several routes and now refugees convoys were returning home. Temporary settlements were built up, while supplies were delivered on a weekly basis. Three small airfields were now working as distribution centers, while several new buildings were being elevated on the place the former ones felt.

Local population was being hired and fair paid, in most of the jobs needed, in an attempt to work this out as a start up of their economy again. Ukrainian building companies were working side by side with Veomese ones, and slowly the scars of war were healing up. It was true that right after the end of the war some soldiers begun to act as they owned the place, they were of course strictly reprehended, a couple even faced military courts and received dishonorable discharges. They were now doing some time at a Grand Ducal military prison for their acts.

In Odessa, for instance, life was as normal as in any other city of the Grand Duchy, the port was operative again, while navy personnel worked together with local authorities on providing both law enforcement and customs regulations. While training and preparing a new generation of law enforcement personnel.

Kiev seemed to be the only one with a government resenting the presence of the Grand Ducal troops. For this the troops never entered the city now ruled by UDO. They seemed decided to maintain this lock up position. Nonetheless every morning Colonel Zelenko would go to UDO's HQ and request a meeting with the self proclaimed government, just to return every night without success.
