Lovell sighed. The Veomese delegation was trying to appease people while still rejecting international assistance, the United Provinces were bound and deterime to tie their future with Veomo and was looking weak and Neoplanta was clearly annoyed. He thought the conference would be a bore but now it was lookibg to be a failure from the start.

The Province's move to play nice and restart discussion on the Ukraine yieled little sway and with the Byronmander delegation doing little, Lovell passed a note to Neoplanta asking for a meeting during the next recess. He expected that break would not be too long, as no one seemed interested in leading thr discussion.

The Grand Duke didn't returned from the following break, in his place a mid forties gentleman returns to the meeting. To the major amusement of all the present, the men speaks:

"Gentlemen, my name is Yuri Neufer, I am the Foreign Minister to His Highness the Grand Duke. He apologies but his attention was required somewhere else. I've just arrived and the journey was long, so I would like to propose a recess til tomorrow, for by what His Highness told me, we don't seem to be getting anywhere at all. Perhaps a sleep over the issues discussed so far would be the best. Don't you think?"

Yuri then sat and waited for the response of the other attendants.

The laugh of the stadhouder had gone and he felt anger rise 'Gentlemen, I believe you do not get the point of this meeting. We started with the misconception it was all about democracy, instead of safety and prosperity. Then minister Neudorffer failed in his abilities for debate but attacked instantly, followed by the grand Duke leaving in the middle of everything' He paused, because he was furious....

'Democracy! Leadership! Taking responsibility! That is what an alliance needs, but somehow everyone seems more concerned with a rogue state like Ukraine than with the future of themselves, their friends, and neighbours! Once again we see the great fail of democracy due to lacking spine! At this moment I have more respect for leaders with guts and self-esteem like Monaco-Ville-Nice, Darjistan, San Lumen, and Celatoria who actually LEAD than this weak nonsense.... It is better to disagree on matters than to hide in semantics and ethical circles. I hoped to find nations with a vision and a will, however I found shrouds and fog of inaction.'

He thought about his options, and knew there were none. The only thing the stadhouder felt was utter failure caused by weakness. He continued...

'For the sake of equality and in the hope of maturity I did not took lead in this discussion. Exactly for those reasons I will take it now. I declare this meeting officially cancelled, and hopelessly failed. The Republic of the Seven United Provinces will continue as she always did by taking care as good as possible for her own citizens and interests. The Veoman military can continue attacks on Ukraine using our territory. Please take the time you need to leave, it is no problem if you wish to stay the night to get some rest. A failed meeting does not provoke hostility, at least not in the Republic of the Seven United Provinces.'

Bitter for failing he waited till everyone had left the room, then he called the Raadspensionaris and Robert with him. He said 'Gentlemen, this is a sad day. Because the people we hoped to be on our side do not have a side at all. They are incapable of joining forces because choosing needs decisiveness. I want an official government statement out in as many newspapers and media all over the globe with each detail on what happened here, just publish the minutes. No nonsense, no propaganda, just the plain truth. Let the international community make up their own minds about the matter. Notify the Veoman government that we still support their war on Ukraine, but not unconditionally, because we do have our opinion on justice too. The truth will prevail, as it always does.'

He sighed 'Gentlemen... it seems we are on our own again...'

Minister Lovell took his leave quickly. Not out of inpoliteness, although the stadhouder's comments were considered both rude and completely out of order and he was more than willing to comment as such. instead, he had been summoned by the First Minister to Copenhagen to discuss how the navy would be stationed in the Danemark region. As he left New Amsterdam to the territorial capital, he held a quick discussion with his boss.

"So he snapped?"

"Yep, apparently he was annoyed that Neoplanta's focus was on the Ukraine and that Veomo left in a huff because they can't just run things how they want to."

"What about the monarch's meeting?"

"No word yet, although the Provinces assume they will have a proper alliance with all the smashing perks that come with it. I think the Stadholder expected the states engaging in the meeting to fall over themselves in line over the Ukraine and didn't expect us and Neoplanta to speak out about the plan."

"Here's what i don't get. If he bashed other states for semantics, why the hell did they open the discussion with a semantics talk?"

"Byronmandy started it."

"Great. So we're no further in stabilizing the eastern region, I expect Veomo to integrate the Ukraine fully against the wishes of Neoplanta and apparently the Imperials and the United Provinces are having a fut because their dreams of a major alliance of democracies fell down."

"I think he forgot he included states with too many differences. Had Byronmandy not invited us and Neoplanta not gone, a whole three-headed agreement would have been achieved quickly. Much to the disgust of Monaco."

"And any discussion with Neoplanta?"

"None, First Minister. Maybe we need to engage in more direct talks?"

"Jason's tried but apparently we cannot connect with them. They had a state visit with Monaco before they headed to Vienna but since international connections are down."

"Madam, I think it would be wise to work on aligning ourselves with Neoplanta. We have similar mindsets on military and stability in the region. The Imperials and Byronmanders we'll have to work with in order to not be drowned out of the convo but joining alliances on either side could be a bit more problematic."

"Abraham, we'll just have to see where the region goes."

Neudorffer was confused at the way the Stadhouder concluded the meeting, as a real primadona. He saw nothing that he could interpret as the weakness the man talked about. In all, he could not interpret his words in any other way, than those of a weak state in league with brute empires. But before, when the Grand Duke said that talking to their neighbours about the Ukraine would have been a waste of time, his blood boiled. That is precisely why he needed to keep silent, to keep himself from saying something rash.
However, the ones who he could see eye to eye with were the people from North Chicanan. He had decided to contact them later, as they seemed as reasonable people - a commodity that seemed rather scarce in the wider region.

He had left the meeting as well. It was not a failure, but neither did it bare real fruit. Veomo had presented their true face, he believed: immature arrogance and pride - they'd probably conquer all the world, if they thought they could manage it... Quite the thorn in Neoplanta's side.

Late in the evening following the disastrous end of the meeting the Stadhouder had withdrawn himself into a small livingroom and was sitting next to a fireplace. As he was poking into the fire with a stick the Raadspensionaris and Robert came in. 'You asked for us, sir?' asked Robert. 'That is correct, please enter' said Stadhouder Baaper de I van Voorne-Putten.

Robert and Raadspensionaris Johan van Oldenbarnevelt walked in and took a seat. The stadhouder noticed that the raadspensionaris hold a glass and was standing slightly unsure on his feet, it seemed he had more than his share. The raadspensionaris did not feel that way though, he felt a nice share of anger which gained wit each glass he drank. His position did not refrain him from humanity, and as the Dutch say "Nothing is as honest as children and drunken people', which was clearly the case here.

The raadspensionaris asked 'Sir, do you have a bottle of wine in here?' 'I think you have had enough Johan' replied the stadhouder. This pushed the raadspensionaris over the egde, an edge he was balancing on for the last couple of hours. 'WHAT THE.... WHO the damn do you think you are?! No wait, let me tell you! You are an idiot, an imbecile, a moron, a degenerate, a prima donna, a waste of time, and and and and.... did I say idiot yet? What the hell were you thinking, are you trying to kill us all? Do you really think that I have worked for you all these years so that you can screw the whole nation over? They should start a revolution and hang you, you good for nothing prick!' Following this rant he stood up and left the room in continuing his monologue brawl.

Robert his mouth fell open, he knew the stadhouder did not have to accept this rant and he thought of the death penalty which was still in effect in the Seven United Provinces. In fear of the consequenses he tried to intervene 'Sorry stadhouder, but he is drunk! Do not hang him!!!'

The stadhouder did not look surprised by this sudden verbal attack, he did not even seem angry. He said 'Thank you Robert, but I am not about to hang anyone. You should know we have not hang anyone for political nor religious matters for over several hundred years. The gallow is a strict privilege to murderers, rapist, and other garbage. I think it would be best to keep it that way.' He continued 'I do not blame the raadspensionaris, because I have put both of you through a lot. Do not forget that the amount of effort he put into shaping the country as she is today. She is not nearly the same as our old home, but it does the trick.'

Robert regained his courage and asked 'But sir why did you pulled the plug on the meeting?'

'Well, as you might have noticed I became very angry. Actually I still am... The thing is, the Seven United Provinces has an opinion and speaks it out. Modern day democracies lack any kind of decisiveness, read their constitutions and the only thing you will see is the sentence "Yes...No...However...But....Maybe....Let's wait and do nothing". From this you can easily draw the conclusion that because we do have an opinion and speak it out we are no real democracy after all. However, we are no cruel dictatorship either. I believe we hold the middle ground.'

Robert nodded and asked 'What are we about to do now?'

'Difficult to say, for it seems we are damned whatever we do. Anyway, we are going to continue our character and personality whatever it takes. We will be thrustworthy, honest, and approachable for anyone but demand the same things in return. That is what caused the problems this afternoon I believe.'

'Can you enlighten me on that matter?' Robert asked.

'Well, the Ukraine is a difficult matter. I grew up in Gorinchem, and we saw the horrors of that nation daily. On that account I would say, stop the invasion and bomb it in the hope of making as many casualties as possible. That is a sick thought ofcourse, and we will never do it that way... However, we can not let that nation run loose again for the price is too high.'

Robert thought for a second then said 'so you think the Grand Dukes intentions are honorable?'

'I can not be sure about that at this moment, but I do not know if I care either. What I do know is that Ukraine is a waste of space and that the Grand Duke has been a good neighbour for a very long time, therefore he must be given some credit and trust.

'What about Neoplanta and North Chicanan?' asked Robert.

'Neoplanta has severe issues on keeping track of the target in a discussion and attacks on fellow nations during an attempt to form an alliance. It would be a dumb thing to forge an alliance with a backstabbing nation like them. I am not very inclined to share a border with them either, I prefer the Ukraine for that matter. The deal with North Chicanan I do not fully understand. The problem seems to be that the otherwise nobel country is practically hijacked by a French minority, a thing the French always seem to get done. Well, you know how I feel about the French, they took our old homeland and were not even capable of keeping it because of their utter laziness. If the French lead weakness, cowardness, and decline will prevail. Failing is the French national hobby....'

Robert concluded the discussion by asking what he should do now. The stadhouder replied 'Just get the word out of what happened , it must be published in all newspapers. I will make a official television statement tomorrow on our position in all of this. But first let us take a good night sleep. Oh.. and please help the raadspensionaris a bit, because he is about to wake up with the worst headache imaginable.'

Robert nodded and left the room following the smell of alcohol....
