The Protectorate of Hellas; New Sargassos Independence

For decades, the United Republic of Neoplanta had been unsuccessfully attempting to integrate its Protectorate of Hellas as a Region of the federal country. As it had become evident that they will not succeed at this, it had been decided to bring the issue to a final conclusion. The decision of the final status of Hellas shall be made in Hellas itself, as that is the only method of assuring longterm peace and stability within the territory. A referendum shall be held, with the following question:

"In your opinion, what should the final status of the Protectorate of Hellas be?
1. The Protectorate of Hellas should be integrated into the United Republic of Neoplanta as its ninth Region.
2. The Protectorate of Hellas should become an independent nation, in no way subordinated to the United Republic of Neoplanta.
3. The current status of the Protectorate of Hellas should be kept in place for the foreseeable future."

As for the actual reasons behind the unsuccessful integration and the supposed split, the government has given no statement. Here are the opinions of some random people from throughout Neoplanta:

"Well, I've been to Hellas a couple of times, and simply, the climate is horrible! That summer heat, and all those hot rocks everywhere - no wonder those people can't think strait! Cause if they had any sense, they'd go for integration right away!"

"Hellas, you say? I thought we gave that place up ages ago; its just a bunch of hicks in the mountains."

"Well, I guess they have their reasons. If you remember the protests after the government banned cars, then you'll also recall that they were the ones most violent demanding the law to be repealed. I think they called it 'economical suicide'. Must be all that hardcore capitalist nonsense that went to their heads. Same thing with the planes, too - some ugly protests."

"Oh, them? I've been down there, talked to some people, and the thing is that they simply don't feel represented by the federal government. And something about our economic policies being completely bad for us. I just don't know, I've been around to countries that didn't mind sacrificing some of their environment for the sake of the economy, and - it was bloody horrible! You wouldn't believe the filth! And all those nuclear warning signs - they gave me a twitch! I say, even if we do give them independence, we can't let them have nuclear power, it would be just wrong!"

I would also like to inform that the protectorate of Hellas will be from this point forward, known as the Protectorate of New Sargassos, which will be officially changed to the Empire of New Sargassos should the reform return with a strong favoritism towards Independence. Since the vote in being held in a mandatory fashion, everyone in the protectorate over the age of 18 will be required to voe in this referendum. The local government has dictated that the vote must be completed by 12:01 midnight to meet strict deadlines for the referendum. The vote will be announced as early as 12:30 AM as everything will be done completely electronically to avoid any sort of voter manipulation.

The Ixzaran Republic is happy to see something being done about the status of Hellas, now known as New Sargassos. And although Neoplanta is a friendly nation towards the Ixzaran Republic, we feel that Hellas is too culturally different from Neoplanta in many senses for it to be integrated into Neoplanta. Should a new state be established, the Ixzaran Republic wil work quickly to establish relations with a new neighbor.

President Szél and PM Kemal-Bach were having a session of the Cabinet, given the delicate matters going down in Hellas, or New Sargassos, as it is more recently being referred to. The Protectorate was in fact made a personal domain of the President at the time, as the initial integration of the territory into Neoplanta failed after the takeover from the Ottomans. So technically, the President had free hands in whatever he wanted to do with Hellas. And it was his personal decision to put the referendum on the table in the first place.

"Well, we are only hours away from the results now. I gathered you all primarily to tell you that I am aware that Hellas will definitively vote for independence. I am also aware that giving them this choice is seen by most as giving up the territory. That it is a bad political decision, and a very bad career move. But the fact is that we all know that we had lost Hellas long ago; in fact, if you are able to think back, I believe you will derive that we never actually had Hellas to begin with; its people never took to our way of life, our basic principles. So I had to take this difficult step and allow Hellas to choose its own path.

I believe that you also know that we do need a scapegoat to keep Parliament from falling apart. But don't worry, it has already been taken care of. Sultana has agreed to take the blame, so as the pressure becomes unbearable sometime next week, I'll ask for Parliament to revoke her mandate. Also, we will lose Georgios Angelopulos, the Minister for Hellas, and the post will be terminated. Apart for that and a few minor changes, the cabinet should stay mostly the same; Olga Josipova will be the new PM. You know her, she's from the Democratic Alliance, last years President of Parliament. That would be the plan, in any case."

The ministers continued the debate on what was to be done and was this the right decision, knowing full well that in only a few hours, a tidal wave of outrage will sweep across Neoplanta, as the first preliminary results of the referendum are declared from Athens.

Celatoria offers full support to the Hellenic people in whatever decision they may take and should the results favour independence, will immediately recognise New Sargassos as an independent state.

The Empire is very open to the Hellenic people gaining independence from Neoplanta. If the Hellenic people vote to become the independent Empire of New Sargassos, Monaco-Ville-Nice will immediately set up with the Empire. The ruling house of Ptolemy in Monaco-Ville-Nice traces its roots back to Hellenic nobility and is very interested in the success of the Hellenic people.

OOC: All so keen on recognising a new nation even BEFORE it is de jure independent... I should be offended, but as we all know the result beforehand, I'll let it pass. ;)

After numerous electronic calculation and information gathering, the preliminary vote for the Hellenic Referendum has come through.

A landslide vote favoring Independence accounted for 93% of the vote.
6% favored continued protectorate status,
the remaining 1% favored integration.

Based off of the infomation gathered in the preliminaries, the local Neoplantan government has begun preparations to return to Neoplanta, while across the country flags of the Newly Independent Empire of New Sargassos are being risen. Due to this being a preliminary vote, many believe that the actual percentage of those favoring independence was in the actual neighborhood of 96%. The final vote will be presented at 8:30 PM local time. However because the preliminaries have a strong indication towards independence, steps are being taken at all levels to transfer power to the new Empire. as of 12:46 AM July 18th, 2011, the Empire of New Sargassos is an independent nation.

OOC: Just how do you intend to introduce the monarchy? And some elections would be in order for the newly created nation.

IC: As the preliminary results were made known, a tide of dissatisfaction swept all across Neoplanta, with protests in Sofia and Naissus. However, most people accepted this result as inevitable; had the Hellenes wanted integration, it could have been done decades ago.

The government has made no statement apart that it will be making an official statement when all the votes have been accounted for and the final results are made known.

The Government of the newly independent Empire of New Sargassos would like to inform that by a percentage vote of 96% to 4%, that the people of Hellas strongly favor independence.

Preperations are being made throughout the territory to prepare the country for widespread local elections. Currently the power has been designated by the interrim government to the states at local levels to administer the local areas to secure them and ensure a short term governing solution, whilst the federal government solidizes and takes over power from the states. Based off of the information being gathered from many sources, the interrim government is looking to make the Karapolos family, the ruling family over New Sargassos.
