Empire of Monaco-Ville-Nice

Alexandria-Monaco-Ville-Nice: Pharaoh Mark Antony and Queen Cleopatra were both in the main command and control center in the Imperial High Command building. They were celebrating there naval victory over Byronmandy "A stroke of genius my love." the Queen said of Antony's trap that the Empire and the Grengales had sprung. A general said "It would go down in naval lore. For centuries they shall write of this great ambush." much to Antony's liking. Not a humble man the Pharaoh much enjoyed the compliments and accolades that were being bestowed upon him.

Foreign Minister Nelson Beaudelairen was standing in the corner letting the old guard of the Imperial hierarchy and the usual social climbers throw themselves at the royal couple. Once it seemed the Pharaoh and Queen had a little breathing space he walked over to them and coldly said "Shall I offer Byronmandy terms?". The Pharaoh thought a second, it was the honorable thing to do. He had no real interest in continuing the war into Byronmandy, there goals had been achieved. He did however hate President Wayne with a passion. The man was everything that was wrong with elected democracies, an opportunist simply seeking to increase the prestige of his nation for a reelection bid. Not much else would make the Pharaoh happier than to President Wayne beg his forgiveness and mercy. Still the soldier in him knew the right thing was to offer terms, that was before the Queen stepped in however.

Queen Cleopatra had been taught from an early age to hate the Republic. They simply were thorns in the great and most ancient history of the Empire. "A mere side note in the glory that is the Empire" the Queen liked to call Byronmandy. The Pharaoh grew up in San Lumen and never really had much of an opinion on Byronmandy until he came to the Empire. He hated them now, but hatred for Byronmandy was in the Queens blood. The Pharaoh and Foreign Minister would offer terms and likely the overly proud Byronmanders would refuse "No! That will not do!" the Queen yelled, stunning most in the command center. The Queen then continued " We shall punish them! We will offer no terms until they do! Continue your war gentlemen!" the Pharaoh nodded and said "Very well.".

Just as they all agreed on the proper course of action an aide came in and said "We have problem. It appears in the air battle a passenger plane was caught up in the middle of it it. It was hailed but didn't respond and it was shot down by a missile cruiser. The plane was carrying North Chicanan nationals.". The Pharaoh grumbled as all in the room were seemingly furious by this most unfortunate accident. The Queen then said to the Foreign Minister in a soft voice "Get the First Minister on the line.".

..........................................

Elsewhere in Alexandria, Monaco-Ville-Nice: Defense Minister Ptah was hard at working with troop deployments. The 13th, 14th, 15th, and 17th Imperial Army divisions had just left Alexandria for Libya. There they would form a different army group than the 10 Imperial Army divisions in Libya already made up. The 8th, 9th, 10th, 35th, 20th, 19th, 21st, 23rd, 24th, 25th made up Army Group A, the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 17th Imperial Army divisions made up Army Group B. Libya was no a virtual fortress with 14 Imperial Army divisions and 7 divisions of the Imperial Air Corps. The victorious combing MVN and Grengale fleet also prowled off the waters of eastern Libya.

Off the coast of Ras Lanuf, Libya-

Sea Marshal Hanson was aboard the BNS Vengeance, an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer in the think of battle. To his left he could see the burning remains of the BNS Liberty aircraft carrier, his flagship. He had to abandon it after it got hit too much. F-35s and F-18s were engaging in dogfights with the enemy overhead, every now and then, one would come crashing down into the ocean. The air attack had been more ferocious than Hanson had thought it would be. The cruise missiles and enemy aircraft were able to inflict a lot of damage, but not without suffering their own losses.

Long-range air cover from Algeria and the western Mediterranean was beginning to fall back. They couldn’t stay in the air so long, and were needing to go back and refuel. Marshal Hanson could not proceed without air protection. Soon the enemy air attacks were drawing down also. Hanson knew that the full enemy naval force was approaching.

The Sea Marshal’s Aide-de-camp, a young captain in his twenties, with a bloodied face turned to his commander, almost yelling just so they could hear each other through the noise.

“Sir, we must pull back! If we can’t maintain air support we won’t win this battle!”

The Marshal nodded his head as he calmly peered out with his binoculars.

The artillery shells coming from the Grangale ships were not a surprise. He knew that they would be using their beloved Iowa class. They were good, yes, but there was a reason they went out of style in the fifties. The 16” Mark 7 guns only had a range of around twenty miles, compared to a standard cruise missile range of fifty miles.

It seemed that the Grangale’s were so anxious to see action that their 7th fleet was somehow acting as the Vanguard of the enemy fleet. The first ships in range were those of Grangale.

“Not yet!,” yelled back Hanson, “We’re not finished yet! Order all fighter jets back to their respective base or aircraft carrier! We need to cease all offensive air operations immediately.”

With that order, the remaining F-35s came thundering back. The initial air assault had lost an estimated half off of it’s planes. The fighter pilots kept a lookout for pursuing aircraft, but to their surprise, none came.

News came pouring into the room on the destroyer that the Byronmadian 11th fleet had been all but destroyed, and its aircraft carrier, the BNS Courage, sunk. The Aide-de-camp grew more angry in his demands, yelling that they need to fall back.

But when the Grangale 7th fleet, slightly ahead of rest of the fleets, came into range, Hanson gave the order to fire a salvo of cruise missiles. So far none had been fired by the fleet except as to intercept incoming missiles and aircraft. The fleet’s enormous amount of submarines, which had been mostly spared by the surface battle overhead, surfaced to unleash their own munitions. White trails, tipped by flaming missiles lifted into the sky. Most went low, hugging the ocean as they sped toward their targets, and out of view.

The Marshal then turned to his men:

“Order a tactical retreat. We’ll fall back into the western Mediterranean!”

With that said, the remaining Byronmadian fleets moved full speed back into friendly air cover. The brief, but deadly battle of the Libyan coast ended with both sides losing many men, but the Byronmadians were the one’s forced to withdraw. To their humiliation, the first real battle of the war ended in their defeat.

Behind the fleet, most of the submarines were left to delay, confuse and destroy all oncoming enemy vessels. They were the fleet’s rearguard, and after the main force had crossed back into the western med, they were to cease engaging the enemy, disperse and disappear.

Byronmandy had lost two fleets in this engagement. The 5th and 11th. They were not able to inflict as much damage as they wanted, destroying only one enemy fleet, the 7th of Grangale.

Before long, the fleets were back in the western Mediterranean, setting up a defensive position and repairing their vessels. Byronmandy’s massive manufacturing sector sprang into action after the war began. New fighter jest and replacement naval parts came flooding in. Byronmandy was mobilizing.

Statement by the Republic of Byronmandy:

Byronmandy respects North Chicanan's call for peace, but for basic reasons, we would not be able to give in to MVN's demands. Grangale lied and said that they did not want war. Somehow they have forgot that they are the one's that declared war on us. If Grangale truly didn't want to fight, they would put down their arms, and continue their peacekeeping operations in and around Istanbul. If they truly wanted to restore order in Anatolia, they would be fighting the warlords, not Byronmandy.

Now MVN has shot down one of your passenger aircrafts, a complete disregard as your rights as a nation. Your people have been murdered like mine, and I hope that now you can see what is true.

Byronmandy will not be able to give in unless an honorable peace can be reached, with both sides maintaining their integrity and prestige. Until then, the Republic will fight on.

The 18th Air Division outside Casablanca was in organized chaos. Airmen were running all about and fighter aircraft were patrolling the skies above. Colonel Erikson of the stealth bomber unit was caught off guard when he received his orders to get ready. He prepared his men, and after saying a few words, the group of pilots walked down into the hanger. B-2s and F-117s were scattered throughout the large building.

None of them knew exactly what awaited them. They quickly got into their cockpits and prepared to take off, taxiing out onto the runway. They took off into the sky one by one, until eventually the entire stealth section of the 18th division was in the air, and disappearing into the horizon. The only orders that Colonel Erikson had received so far were to move to a designated rally point and converge with the other stealth sections from the 14th, 33rd, and 34th air divisions.

They would have to proceed without fighter escort for now. They were told that when they neared the target area, numerous stealthy F-35s wouldn’t be far behind to provide support. He was ready for what was to come when he received the order.

--- GIS Muspellheim ---

The 7th Fleet took the brunt of the counter attack and took the lion's share of the suicide attacks before the subsided. While the naval artillery of the Muspellheim had shorter range than missiles they were also next to impossible to intercept. They couldn't be shot down, and ECM was worthless against a "brainless" projectile. With the heavy air cover and SAM support, the F-35s and F/A-18s of the Byronmandy feet were unable to knock her out and the carriers lacking agility were simply target practice. Though the more agile smaller ships were better able to evade, several still fell prey. During the battle she took another suicide runner to the stern and her helicopter pad was destroyed. Several more ships were sunk by missiles and suicide attackers. It would take some time to reorganize the fleet, and the Muspellheim herself would need to put up a dry dock for some times.

Admiral Revil surveyed the damage to his ship and to the rest of the fleet over all, his fleet paid quite a steep price. Still... I suppose one of our fleets to their two was worth it, we still have the numbers advantage, as well as a mental advantage over them, their moral must be down the toilet by now. The last desparate attack by the Byronmandy fleet had done considerable damage to the fleet. Many of the cruise missiles were shot down, and Revil tried an unconventional tactic of using timed fuses on the artillery shells to use them as a sort of giant shotgun, but enough still got though. One low skimming missiles struck the ship's armor belt, but luckily didn't penetrate and detonated outside the ship. The same couldn't be said for an escorting Sovermemny. Roughly 2/3s of the 7th Fleet had been destroyed, most in the last desperate attack, and not a single ship was unscathe. The Niebelheim was struck in the bow, destroying her catapults rendering her unable to launch fighters, her radar and ECM were also destroyed. Revil wondered how the other carrier class used by the Empire, the Admiral Kuznetsov-class would have faired. For all intents and purposes the 7th Imperial Fleet of the Grangale Empire was out of commission for some time. No one could have expected to shoot down all those missiles and a suicide attack air craft.

--- GIS Midgard ---

The 6th Fleet lost two of it's ships, one sunk and another knocked out of commission, most ships though received light to moderate damage. The Midgard somehow managed to make it though relatively unscathed. Timoshenko thought they got off pretty easy compared to the 7th Fleet. Let alone Byromandy's armada. Timoshenko was a career Navy man, and even though they were the enemy, it pain him to see such a proud fleet so brutally crushed, but that's just the nature of war. His XO Captain Raine Armagest joined the Commodore to survey the damage. "Do you think this will end it?" She asked.

"For all intents and purposes it should... if we were fighting a sane man." The Commodore said. For the Grangale Empire this was not a war against a republic, this was a war against a political party. The Empire viewed Byronmandy's ruling neo-conservative party as aggressive bullies. The Empire had taken no hostile action against them, and yet they were threatened with war by this bully. "You know this is why the Emperor is appointed and not elected." Timoskeno muttered. "I bet this war was a political move by the neo-conservative party to cement their party's power. They wanted to come into Ixzaran, bribe a warlord then sweep all opposition, warlord and other nations on humanitarian missions and claim to be liberators. Nothing more than a variation of the 'small victorious war'." Timoskenko noticed the quizzical look on Armagest's face. "I studied political science before joining the Navy." Timokshenko continued. "I'd say the only way to win this is, to militarily crush them, turning public opinion against the neo-conservative party, and swinging it in favor of the opposition party. Once the opposition party is elected into office, it might be easier getting everyone to sit down to a little chat."

"Either way I just hope MVN isn't planning on invading their main territory, that will have the opposite effect and galvanize public opinion behind the ruling party." The Commodore added.

"Wouldn't the proper thing to do now be to offer terms?" Armagest asked.

"It would, but you have to understand how neo-conservatives think. They're extremists who might very well just take their nation down with them just to get their way. They're the kind of people who think they have some kind of special destiny, as if they were some kind of chosen people or something. Even if terms were offered they wouldn't take it. We have no choice but to continue this war."

--GIS Venator ---

The Venator and the 4th Fleet had been picking up what ever survivors they could find. Most were half dead from some injury or another. Jintao didn't want that many POWs inside the ship so tents were set up on a portion of the flight deck. There was one life raft that one of the helicopter crews found that caused Ramius to simply say "Not good..." There was two people in the raft, a mother and a daughter. According to them they were the only survivors when their plane was shot down, in the middle of the battle. The problem was... they were North Chicanan nationals. Currently they were in sick bay being examined by the ship's doctor.

"Ok so what do we do now?" a ragged looking Jintao asked, taking a sip from a mug of coffee. The two officers were in the officer's mess taking something of a break.

Ramius thought for a moment before he spoke. "Well first we need to contact the North Chicanan government and tell them we have two of their people. Tell them we'll fly them to a neutral location of their choosing where they can come and pick them up."

"And the POWs? The Istanbul District jail would be completely filled up by them."

Ramius mulled over the options. One solution was just to take them back to Istanbul and let the Army deal with them there. Another was to find a neutral nation willing to take them. Of course they would be returned home and sent back to the front. But... "Hmm..."

"What are you thinking?" Jintao suspiciously asked.

"Back in college I studied political science, I was classmates with Commodore Timoshenko actually. There was a few weeks where we studied a section called 'Politics and War'. OK now follow me, knowing the neo-conservatives, they've likely been pumping their people full of proaganda that we're a bunch of backwards savages right? So, we patch up their wounded and treat them all nice and kindly, like we're already doing. Then they end up going home with stories of 'you know those Grangalians, they're really not so bad', you follow?"

"I get it. They go home, they side with the anti-war parts of their society, and with enough luck, the opposition party drives the neo-conservatives out of power in the next election cycle?" The other replied.

"That's the idea."

"So who's the neutral nation?"

"I don't know yet, ah, maybe San Lumem, or Celatoria?" Ramius conceded.

Councilor Arlington cleared his throat, the statement he was making would be broadcasted across the continent.

"It has come to our attention that Byronmandy has issued a statement regarding the war. We have been painted as war mongerers, However allow us to set the record straight. Imagine if, out of the blue a man came threatening to shoot you, for the simple fact you're fixing a house a few blocks from his and he doesn't like who you vote for. Then a few days later, you see that same man walking towards the house you are repairing with a shotgun in hand. Do you wait until he is at the door step, maybe inside the house already with the muzzle up against the back of your head? No you take action before you are harmed. This ladies and gentlemen, is our situation that was brought upon us. Istanbul was the home we were fixing, President Wayne, was the crazed neighbor who threatened violence. President Wayne was the one who came walking down the street with a shotgun, a shotgun in the form of 100,000 combat troops. Now who threatens other nations in an area and sends 100,000 combat troops under the claim a humanitarian mission? I will tell you who, liars do.

President Wayne claims they are the victim? President Wayne says, if we did not want war, we should put down our arms and fight the warlords? And yet who is the one who threatened war against other nations that stepped in.

Ha, I have news for President Wayne... We were, we are, conducting humanitartian missions. In fact, just before WE were threatend with war BY President Wayne, we had sucessfully carried out an operation to liberate and extermination camp, run by one of the warlords. President Wayne has done NOTHING for the people, and they have the arrogance to come and threaten us with war? For aiding a Colonel who stayed at his post to protect his people? I have faith in the citizens of the continent, faith that you are all smart enough to see though the lies of Byronmandy, no! The lies of President Wayne and his neo-conservative cohorts. To see though his smoke screen, that he is no different than the warlords we have been fighting against.

If President Wayne truly cares about these people, it will be HE who puts down his arms, HE who stops this jingoistic war, and allow us to focus all out efforts back to Istanbul. However, I doubt that will be the case, ladies and gentlemen, I predict soon, we will see President Wayne's true colors, as a warmongerer, as a glory seeker, and most of all, as a typical politician. Watch as he escalates this war for his own political again, regardless of how many people have to die for his political ambitions.

I leave you all tonight with a small warning. trust President Wayne, at you own peril."

Communique to Grangale Empire:

At this time we ask that the Northern nationals that have been recovered by your fleet be brought at your earliest convience to Treiste in San Lumen, where the Northern 3rd Fleet is currently stationed. We also ask if any wreckage was recovered to be brought with your fleet to Trieste for recovery.

We thank you for honoring our request.

Helene Aremstrang
First Minister, Dominion of North Chicanan and the Northern Territory of Danemark-Chicander
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In St. John's...

The capital was in shock that a commuter plane leaving Belgrade for Tunisia was shot down off the coast of Sicily. No one knew why they had failed to acknowledge the hails from the Empires shooting at each other over the Mediterranean or even why the plane had been shot. The fears were war was moving closer to San Lumen and the Northerners would not only lose their citizens, they would lose a partner in trying to stop the stupid war brought on by pride and not friggen talking to each other.

Obviously, calls for calm were recognized. Northerners are bloodthirsty over football, but seeing their citizens killed when not involved in conflict struck a nerve.

Helene and Jason were not prepared for the news. And considering it was NK, who had constantly pushed for the Government to stay out of the regional affairs, many had wondered if they made it up. It was only when Channel 2 showed aerial coverage coming from San Lumen that the fears of the Northerners were confirmed. Helene, already dealing with a stubborn Byronmander side who seemed to lose the script, and Jason, who's calls for calm in the region were being ignored, were now faced with either honoring their own calls for joining the conflict if their men were killed or staying calm and on the sidelines.

It helps the Northern political structure, even the neocons, saw the folly of a small state getting involved. It would harm the humanitarian efforts of the state and make them more hypocritical.

Helene wanted answers. No, she demanded answers. She was furious that Byronmandy would stir the pot more with their response to their genuine request to stop the war and annoyed Monaco-Ville-Nice would stick their thumb in the wound after decimating the Byronmander navy and accomplishing whatever it was they wanted.

So imagine her surprise when a call from Monaco came in. "Great, let me put on the leader face so i don't scream like bloody hell," she thought as she slipped past her ministers and into her private office. Rain hit against the glassy exterior of the Government Tower and the lights from the CityTV and Ch.2 Towers shimmered a bright orange for the losses of civilians.

Checking her emotions, her annoyance, her sheer irritation that states would rather tear themselves apart rather than try and stabilize their neighbors, she spoke.

"This is First Minister Helene Aremstrang of North Chicanan. I have been looking forward to your call."

SUBJECT: Re:North Chicanan citizens

We have acknowledged your request and they are being flown to Tresite in a V-22 with all possible haste. Please have someone from your government ready to meet the transport.

Iskander Ramius
Commodore, Grangale Imperial Navy

-------

--- Somewhere near San Lumen ---

"Was it scary?" Master Chief Levine asked the little girl sitting across from him. She clutched a large stuffed cartoon eagle that he had given her. There were some crates bound for Istanbul that had not been off loaded in all the haste. One was a crate of toys for the children, and Levine took a stuffed eagle and gave it to the girl named Erin. She hugged the eagle tighter as she nodded a response.

"Hey it's ok to be scared, big girls can get scared. Even a big guy like me got scared with all that shooting." Levine gently said. Then he remembered he still had a pack of dried cranberries from his rations earlier. "You like sweets?" Erin simply nodded. "Here you can have this." Levine reached into his pocket for the pack and tore it open before giving it to her. "They're like rasins, but cranberries." She took one and ate it, then smiled at Levine, and he simply smiled back. Levine then looked up at her mother, a woman named Lucrezia, "You know, she reminds me a lot of my niece back home."

"She had a big brother, who always looked out for her." Lucrezia said. "He's... he went down with the plane."

"I'm sorry." Levine quietly said. He looked over at Erin and thought We've done what we needed to do, we should end this now.

Behind their V-22 was another V-22 carrying parts of the wreak that they were able to salvage.
