The Grand Duke decided to take this time to walk around the gardens of the complex, walking with Emperor Julii, whom so kindly agreed to join him on the walk.

"Thank you for joining me Your Majesty. There are some several issues I'd like to discuss with you that go apart of this meeting and are more related with the recent death of my father in law, and since I know how fond is Prince Alexi with your own Commodore Ramius..."

Suddenly a spit of air, a sting on the chest. The Grand Duke stops where he stood as if he was in shock, he looks down towards his chest, a small red dot begun to grew on a large rosette of blood. The Grand Duke begins to fall, stretching his hand to the Emperor he manages grasping his arm, before losing control over his own legs, and precipitating towards the grassy soil where they stood.

On the other side of the lake, the hitman was satisfied, a direct hit. Throwing the rifle away, it was time for him to disappear. A few hours later he was already on board of a flight to the Swedish city of Stockholm. Later that day network news all over the region would inform the disappearing of the Grand Duchess airplane.

King Jason was having lunch with King Edward and the Stadhouder when Oliver entered the room.
"Your Majesties, Stadhoulder, I am very sorry to disturb your lunch but you need to see this.'' Oliver turned on the television and the three leaders were stunned.
"This is Breaking News Grand Duke Kahv Eihm has been shot by a unknown gunman in the gardens of the complex were the Anatolian Conference is being held. We do not as of yet know his condition. As soon as we get additional information we will inform you.'' King Jason dropped his glass and it shattered on the floor. He couldn't believe what he just heard. He was hoping and praying the Grand Duke had survived and that the unthinkable hadn;t happened.

The Conference had taken a brief recess and the Grand Duke requested that Emperor Julii join him in a walk around the gardens.

"Allow us this opportunity to give our condolences." The Emperor said as they rounded the corner. "If there is anything we can do to help, just say the word." He continued.

They walked several feet into the garden, Kiryu and Almathea several feet behind when the Emperor heard a whizing noise. An avid shooter the Emperor instantly knew the sound and moved to push the Grand Duke to the ground, but was too late, once he turned the Grand Duke had already fallen.

"NO!" The Emperor shouted as he grabbed his outstretched hand. By this time Kiryu and Almathea had taken positions using their bodies as shields to cover the Emperor.

"COME ON, COME ON! STAY WITH ME!" The Emperor shouted trying to get a reaction from the Grand Duke. Meanwhile Kiryu was shouting orders to fireteam Alpha and Bravo back at their villa into his earpiece. "I want Alpha to forming a perimeter around the gardens area, no one gets in or out. I want Bravo to move in on any places that have a view of the gardens. I want Charlie to move out and secure Major Sari and the conference room. I want Delta and Epsilon paroling the grounds. Now MOVE!" Kiryu didn't think Bravo would be able to catch the assassin, but what he was hoping for at least was that they would find evidence as to who it was and who they were working for. But most of all he was infuriated at this gross laps in security. Such a lapse in security is INEXCUSABLE...! He didn't care what the North Chicanan government or the other leaders thought, if this conference was going to continue with Emperor Julii zi Grangalia XIII in attendance, then the place was going to be patrolled with Imperial Guardsmen. His duty as an Imperial Guardsman was to protect members of the Imperial government above all other concerns. Even after being appointed Emperor, Kiryu still saw him as the younger brother he never had since their university days an like hell he was going to let some assassin get him.

At the same time Almathea was on her own earpiece radioing for a doctor. She then shouted from her position covering the Emperor. "A DOCTOR IS ON THEIR WAY YOUR MAJESTY JUST PLEASE HANG ON!"

No more than 3 minutes later, fireteams Charlie, Delta, and Epsilon had deployed from Grangale One and were en route to the resort.

Time seemed frozen to the Grand Duke, everything seemed to run slower and slower, he was cold. amorphous shapes were moving around him. The screams of Emperor Julii were fading away. There was no pain. The light was so clear. Shades braked it at constant intervals, sudden more shapes and the felling of being carried. With great effort he reached towards one of them and said, his voice so low he was afraid he couldn't be heard "Protect Natalya" and after a deep bubbling breath of a perforated lung, with weaker voice "Kendar" falling unconsciousness right after.

Meanwhile at Baru Hurezumsa, Premier Gustav Kendar was addressing to the nation

"It is with great sorrow that we acknowledge the assassination attempt against the life of the Grand Duke Kavh Eirm and we urge the nation to carry him on your prayers. The Collegium asked me to inform that we shall not recall our troops from anatolia, nor from the western banks until a decision is achieved at the conference. It was the Grand Duke wish that peace was restored on the former states of Ixzara and Neoplanta. The Grand Duchy will support all decisions that places these territories on the tracks of peace. The Grand Duchess will be flying to North Chicanan later this evening to accompany the Grand Duke back home when he become stable enough to be transported. All humanly possible measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the Grand Duke, and no effort or resource shall be spared to get whomever did this. That's all for now."

As the Premier stood down from the podium on the conference room, and walked back into the inner halls of the Ducal Palace, Marshall Iubek joined him.

"I told him he should have gone there with more security assets!" he almost yelled to the Premier

"Markum, you know how he is. What he is least concerned with is with his own safety, besides he was going to a friendly nation."

"I know, I know, but still"

"Well what is done is done. We must worry know that nothing happens to the Royal Family, contact the Krasnodarians, after all, since King Vasilly's death we are one country with Krasnodar."

As the Minister of Defense left, Gustav got into his office.

"...Project Natalya... Kendar..." The Grand Duke croaked.

"What's that? What's Natalya? What's Kendar?" The Emperor asked, just as paramedics arrived. "Hang in there my friend, doctors are here!" The Emperor said and squeezed the Grand Duke's hand before letting go to get out of the medics' way.

The Emperor took a step back. Pull though my friend... he though. Since the Vienna Conference, and the cooperation between the two nations in dismantling the black market network the Emperor saw the Grand Duke as an increasingly important partner in international affairs.

"Almathea, take a note... The last thing he said to me was 'Project Natalya' and 'Kendar'. For now, tell no one, he wanted to speak with me in person about something important. We're going to get to the bottom of this..."

"Your Majesty..." Kiryu said as he approached the two. "Bravo reports they've found what they believe is the assassination weapon."

The Emperor bit his right thumb nail as he thought, he turned towards Kiryu and kept his voice low. "There's a chance this was an inside job, have the rifle taken to the IIS to analyses, do it quietly and for the meantime we'll keep the results to ourselves. Right now we don't know who might be involved so it's best to keep things quiet."

"Rodger that." Kiryu replied.

Two Guardsmen in full combat gear arrived with equipment for Almathea, Kiryu and the Emperor. The Emperor slipped on a bullet proof vest and hid an AKS-74U beneath his suit. Almathea and Kiryu too dawned bullet proof vests and assault rifles, Almathea with an Mk.14 EBR and Kiryu with an 6.8mm XCR assault rifle.

The Stadhouder was having a pleasant lunch with King Edward and King Jason, they were talking about many things but nothing too serious. The Stadhouder had an excellent time.
Suddenly a man came rushing in shouting apologies and turned on the television. The news that the Grand Duke had been assasinated at the conference terrain was all over the newschannel, besides the television nobody made a sound. Kings Jason broke the silence by dropping his glass, this sudden noise brought the men back to reality.

The Stadhouder said 'Well, isn't this a lousy day.... Gentlemen I think all of us have urgent matters to attend to, so please excuse me. Good luck, I hope to speak to you soon.' He nodded in the direction of the Raadspensionaris and both men left the room. As they left the building two North Chicanan soldiers came rushing in, the leading lieutenant said 'Your Majesty, you have to stay inside for your own safety.' The Raadspensionaris said 'Do we, Lieutenant?' 'Sorry sir, those are the orders I received.' the Lieutenant replied.

The Stadhouder stepped forward and intercepted the reaction of the Raadspensionaris 'Ok listen, I appreciate the orders you received and I completely understand it is for our own safety. I do not blame you for doing your work sir. However, far out east there are millions of people relying on my government and its actions. Millions of people neighbouring a nation of which the head of state was just shot, and probably murdered. We have to go to Villa Rosa or very bad things might happen.' The Stadhouder was usually a friendly man, but this time he would not change his mind.

The Lieutenant asked 'and what am I supposed to tell my superiors?' The Stadhouder said 'We left the building a few minutes before you came, we never saw you, and you never saw us.' The Lieutenant thought for a second and said 'Ok.... move on. I will report what you just said. I hope you understand what a risk I am taking here....' 'I know, and I thank you for it. If anything might go wrong and you get problems with it make sure to contact our embassy. We always help the ones who help us.' the Stadhouder said and after that he moved on with the Raadspensionaris at his side.

'This is bad... what are we about to do?' the Raadspensionaris asked. 'We go to Villa Rosa ASAP, I need to speak to the army high command. As you might remember we still have a lot of Veoman troops within our borders. Not as much as during the war with Ukraine, but still a lot. We will not kick them out, but we need to make sure nothing can go wrong if the nation might descent into anarchy. Plus we need to increase the security at the Veoman and Ukrainian border.' the Stadhouder replied.

'And what about you?' the Raadspensionaris asked. 'What do you mean... what about me?' the Stadhouder asked in return. 'Well you always liked the Grand Duchy, and the Duke too.' the Raadspensionaris said. 'Shut up and walk.' were the words the Stadhouder used to finish the conversation.

----

When they arrived at Villa Rosa the Stadhouder grabbed the telephone while the Raadspensionaris went to the bathroom. He called the Ambassador 'Hey Maarten, have you seen the news?' 'What do you think.... the whole city is in chaos over it, imagine what is going on in Veomo at the moment... You want to me put you through with New Amsterdam on a safe line?' the Ambassador asked. 'Connect me with Jan Pieterszoon Coen if you will.' the Stadhouder said.

Jan Pieterszoon Coen had been the General in Command of the Royal Dutch Army for years and his experience with the Veoman troops made him the man of choice to lead this issue in the Seven United Provinces. The telephone rang twice and the General answered it 'This is the automatic answering machine of the greates General in the world, please leave a message after the beep or any other sound I am going to make.' 'Stop joking around and do your work you imbecile, aren't you following the news or anything?' the Stadhouder asked. 'Oh, sorry sir. I did not know you were in such a bad mood, what has happened?' the General asked. 'The Grand Duke of Veomo has just been assasinated on the conference terrain.' It became silent on the other side.

'Are you kidding me? I certainly do not hope this is a joke, because I do not think its funny.' the General said while switching on the tv. The first thing he saw were images shot from a North Chicanan helicopter showing a motionless Duke lying on the ground and many people running around him. 'Shit me... you were not joking....' the General concluded.

The Stadhouder sighed 'Thank you, will you go and take action now?' The General realised what to do and said 'Yes sir, any special orders?' 'Do you have a pen and paper? I want you to write down the following things and take care of it.' the Stadhouder said. He began to sum up immediately:
'1. Send an official message out to our citizens that the Grand Duke has been shot, we do not know for sure if he is dead yet. If he dies, tell the people he was murdered.
2. Send the Gorinchem army Division to the former Veoman Ukrainian war camp, most of their troops have left already but I want to make sure everything is going smooth. Do not forget, they are one of our closest allies.
3. Let the Gorinchem army division increase the border security with the Ukraine and Veomo too
4. Send the word out we have no reason to believe the North Chicanan security has failed, they are about to get a lot of shit thrown out over them which is unreasonable
5. Monitor our ethnic groups, we have many Russians and Kazakhs living within our border and I want to know it if the unrest spreads to them.
6. Act as you see fit, but be extremely cautious. I trust you with this one.'

The General asked 'Ok Sir, is that all?' 'Yes that is all, good luck and see you soon.' the Stadhouder replied. He shut off the phone and yelled 'Hey, Johan. How is that nervous bladder of yours doing?' From behind the bathroom door he heard 'Give me a break, just washing up in here. Trying the wash the anxiety away YOU caused!' He knew this was not the time for it, but the Stadhouder could not refrain from having a bit of a smile anyway. He was not sure if it was a smile caused by amusement or stress.

The Emperor, Almathea, Kiryu and two Guardsmen had located the apartment where the hitman fired the shot from. Who ever it was a professional, they left quickly and from all appearances left no trace.

"Almathea, you took forensics back in day didn't you?" The Emperor said.

"Yeah... let me guess, you want me to find what we can before the locals start investigating right?" She asked, already getting to work.

"You got it..."

The four looked for anything that could give them a hint. Normally the Emperor would have just left it up to the locals, but he took the Grand Duke's last words to him as a sort of personal request. The Empire was going to find what it could about Project Natalya and what or who Kendar was.

They managed to find a shell casing though, it was in an odd location, in the hallway near the door. "Its almost as if, the hitman was taking it with him, but dropped it on the way out." She said looking at the 7.62x54R casing, a caliber that matched the SV-98 rifle that was found in the bushes just outside the apartment window. She looked at the bottom of the caseing, holding it in a gloved hand. "I might be wrong but I think these stamps are from a Ukranian armory."

"Can you lift prints from it?" The Emperor asked.

"Yeah I got what I need here to MacGyver something."

"OK, do it, take pictures, then leave the casing where you found it.

"Your Majesty, do you want us to check the records of who stayed here?" Kiryu asked.

"No, this guy is a pro, it'll just be a red herring."

"...hair... is there hair in the shower drain?" Almathea asked.

"Er... let me check..." Kiryu went into the bathroom and a moment later returned with a strand of hair... obviously not the kind on a person's head.

"This what you're looking for." Kiryu said with a slightly sour look.

"Yeah, wrap it up and take it with us, we'll send it with the prints, the pictures and the rifle to the IIS. Now lets get out of here before the locals authorities show up." Almathea said.

King Jason couldn;t believe what had occurred. The Grand Duke of Veomo had been shot in a senseless act of violence. King Jason began to think out loud.
"Who would commit such a senseless and cowardly act of violence? I will do everything in my power to find those responsible for this despicable act and bring them to justice.'' King Jason was unsure of what to do in the immediate. He called General Fitzzwallace and told him to take precautions to secure the border with Ukraine. He was about to call the Secretary of State when the news cut to a press conference being held by Prime Minister Dolores Lantingham.

The Queen Cleopatra and Pharaoh Anthony were lunch before returning to the conference to work on a draft for Anatolia. The Queen was eating light, a leafy green salad with strawberries and vinaigrette dressing. The Pharaoh was eating on the heavier side eating a Chicanan favorite Shepard's pie and washing it down with a beer. The two were rather enjoying the piece and quite in their villa and were enjoying talking to each other. It had been awhile since they had uninterrupted time together.

This was interrupted when head of the Praetorian Guard's royal detachment Colonel Amicus entered the room with a concerned look on his face. Colonel Amicus was a massively muscled man in his late 30's, he sported a salt and pepper colored mohawk with a goatee, and wore the traditional blue and deep purple uniform of the Praetorian Guards. He spent his life in the service of the Empire, joining the Imperial Army at 19 and quickly being spotted for training in the Elite Imperial Marine Recon Regiment. With his skills being finely tuned it was obvious he was a gifted warrior and then was offered a spot in the elite Praetorian Guards. Now some years later he had risen to leader of the Praetorian Guards Royal Detachment, there most prestigious unit.

The Royals were surprised to see the stunned look on his face, prompting the Pharaoh to say "What's wrong friend?". Colonel Amicus slowly said "The Grand Duke has been shot. We have not received word on his condition.". The royals food nearly fell out of their mouths and the Queen dropped her fork loudly before saying "Who shot him and is he caught?" the Colonel shook his head saying "No trace and no information on where he is from.". The Pharaoh then said "Are the Praetorian Guards mobilized around the Villa?" the Colonel nodded and said "As we speak." the Pharaoh said "Good.". The Colonel then said "I am advising we move to code Phoenix." (Code Phoenix the call sign for the plan to immediately evacuate the Royal family from a particular place. Named for the Imperial Crowns Phoenix like ability to survive any threat.). The Pharaoh nodded and agreed "I agree Colonel. We don't know who is responsible for this therefore any of us leaders here could be targeted.". The Queen nodded and said "How could this happen? What becomes of this conference now? No matter I suppose bigger problems now. The Grand Duke has been shot... What becomes of Veomo?". The Pharaoh agreed and then said "You should leave for the Empire my love." the Queen looked at the Pharaoh sadly and worried " You're not coming?". The Pharaoh sighed and said "I'll try and salvage this conference. If we both leave it's doomed to fail. We've invested to much time and their is to much at stake to just let it fail. I'll try and resolve the war with Byronmandy at the least. You should go my love, it's to dangerous now here. Return to the Empire and the safety there.". The Queen sadly nodded and said "Alright.. Will you see to it my things here are sent to me in Alexandria?". The Pharaoh laughed and then said with a smile "Of course. I'll see you soon." the Queen smiled and then the Colonel whisked her away.

Within minutes a large motorcade left the Old Estate out the front gate. Cameras flashed as the police cars, black SUV's and large limo's drove on the main road to the airport. While all the commotion was at the front gate 3 black SUV's unceremoniously raced out the back gate driving nearly 100 MPH down the narrow streets in St. Johns. In a matter of minutes they were at the airport and the Queen was on Imperial Air Corps One and headed back to Alexandria.

Back at the Villa Narobi the Pharaoh was trying to get hold of the situation and sent a Praetorian to get the Emperor Julii and the other leaders from the Vienna Alliance to meet him at the Villa Narobi.
